We study functions of bounded variation defined in an abstract Wiener space X, relating the variation of a function u on a convex open set O in X to the behavior near t=0 of T(t)u, T(t) being the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup in O.
After establishing some new global facts (like a measure theoretic structure theorem and approximation results) about complex-valued functions with bounded variation on arbitrary noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we extend results of Miranda/the second author/Paronetto/Preunkert and of Carbonaro/Mauceri on the heat semigroup characterization of the variation of L^1-functions to a class of Riemannian manifolds with possibly unbounded from below Ricci curvature.
In this paper we provide two different characterizations of sets with finite perimeter and functions of bounded variation in Carnot groups, analogous to those which hold in Euclidean spaces, in terms of the short-time behaviour of the heat semigroup. The second one holds under the hypothesis that the reduced boundary of a set of finite perimeter is rectifiable, a result that presently is known in Step 2 Carnot groups.
