Holographic dark energy at the Ricci scale

We consider a holographic cosmological model in which the infrared cutoff is fixed by the Ricci's length and dark matter and dark energy do not evolve separately but interact non-gravitationally with one another. This substantially alleviates the cosmic coincidence problem as the ratio between both components remains finite throughout the expansion. We constrain the model with observational data from supernovae, cosmic background radiation, baryon acoustic oscillations, gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters, the history of the Hubble function, and the growth function. The model shows consistency with observation.

Observational constraints on a holographic, interacting dark energy model

We constrain an interacting, holographic dark energy model, first proposed by two of us in [1], with observational data from supernovae, CMB shift, baryon acoustic oscillations, x-rays, and the Hubble rate. The growth function for this model is also studied. The model fits the data reasonably well but still the conventional $Λ$CDM model fares better. Nevertheless, the holographic model greatly alleviates the coincidence problem and shows compatibility at $1σ$ confidence level with the age of the old quasar APM 08279+5255.

On the consistency of warm inflation in the presence of viscosity

This paper studies the stability of warm inflationary solutions when the viscous pressure is taken into account. The latter is a very natural and physically motivated ingredient of warm inflation and is seen to widen the stability range of warm inflation. The spectral index parameters, $n_{s}$, $n_{T}$, and their ratio are derived. The corresponding WMAP7 data are used to fix some parameters of the model. Two specific examples are discussed in detail: (i) a potential given by $V(ϕ, T) = v_{1}(ϕ)\, + \, v_{2}(T)$, and (ii) a potential of the form $V(ϕ, T) = α\, v_{1}(ϕ) \, v_{2}(T)$. In both cases, the viscosity has little impact on the said ratio.

The generalized second law in universes with quantum corrected entropy relations

We apply the generalized second law of thermodynamics to discriminate among quantum corrections (whether logarithmic or power-law) to the entropy of the apparent horizon in spatially Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes. We use the corresponding modified Friedmann equations along with either Clausius relation or the principle of equipartition of the energy to set limits on the value of a characteristic parameter entering the said corrections.

Scaling Cosmology

We show that with the help of a suitable coupling between dark energy and cold dark matter it is possible to reproduce any scaling solution $ρ_{X}\propto ρ_{M}a^ξ$, where $ρ_{X}$ and $ρ_{M}$ are the densities of dark energy and dark matter, respectively. We demonstrate how the case $ξ= 1$ alleviates the coincidence problem. Future observations of supernovae at high redshift as well as quasar pairs which are planned to discriminate between different cosmological models will also provide direct constraints on the coupling between dark matter and dark energy.

Synergistic warm inflation

We consider an alternative warm inflationary scenario in which $n$ scalar fields coupled to a dissipative matter fluid cooperate to produce power--law inflation. The scalar fields are driven by an exponential potential and the bulk dissipative pressure coefficient is linear in the expansion rate. We find that the entropy of the fluid attains its asymptotic value in a characteristic time proportional to the square of the number of fields. This scenario remains nearly isothermal along the inflationary stage. The perturbations in energy density and entropy are studied in the long--wavelength regime and seen to grow roughly as the square of the scale factor. They are shown to be compatible with COBE measurements of the fluctuations in temperature of the CMB.

Interacting Quintessence

We demonstrate that a suitable coupling between a quintessence scalar field and a pressureless cold dark matter (CDM) fluid leads to a constant ratio of the energy densities of both components which is compatible with an accelerated expansion of the Universe.

Cosmological two-fluid thermodynamics

We reveal unifying thermodynamic aspects of so different phenomena as the cosmological electron-positron annihilation, the evaporation of primordial black holes with a narrow mass range, and the ``deflationary'' transition from an initial de Sitter phase to a subsequent standard Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker begin (FLRW) behavior.

Cosmic evolution during primordial black hole evaporation

Primordial black holes with a narrow mass range are regarded as a nonrelativistic fluid component with an equation of state for dust. The impact of the black hole evaporation on the dynamics of the early universe is studied by resorting to a two-fluid model. We find periods of intense radiation reheating in the initial and final stages of the evaporation.

Reheating and causal thermodynamics

The reheating process in inflationary universe models is considered as an out-of-equilibrium mixture of two interacting and reacting fluids, and studied within the framework of causal, irreversible thermodynamics. The evolution of the temperature and the decay rate as determined by causal thermodynamics are estimated at different stages of the process. A simple model is also used to find the perturbations of the expansion rate, including the possibility of damped oscillations.
