The Interaction Rate in Holographic Models of Dark Energy

Observational data from supernovae type Ia, baryon acoustic oscillations, gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters, and the growth factor are used to reconstruct the the interaction rate of the holographic dark energy model recently proposed by Zimdahl and Pavón [1] in the redshift interval $0 < z < 1.8$. It shows a reasonable behavior as it increases with expansion from a small or vanishing value in the far past and begins decreasing at recent times. This suggests that the equation of state parameter of dark energy does not cross the phantom divide line.

A preliminary analysis of the energy transfer between the dark sectors of the Universe

We study the mutual interaction between the dark sectors (dark matter and dark energy) of the Universe by resorting to the extended thermodynamics of irreversible processes and constrain the former with supernova type Ia data. As a byproduct, the present dark matter temperature results in good agreement with independent estimates of the temperature of the gas of sterile neutrinos.

Toward a solution of the coincidence problem

The coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration constitutes a serious riddle with regard to our understanding of the evolution of the Universe. Here we argue that this problem may someday be solved -or better understood- by expressing the Hubble expansion rate as a function of the ratio of densities (dark matter/dark energy) and observationally determining the said rate in terms of the redshift.

Reconstructing the interaction rate in holographic models of dark energy

We reconstruct the interaction rate of the holographic dark energy model recently proposed by Zimdahl and Pavón \cite{wd} in the redshift interval $0 < z < 1.8$ with observational data from supernovae type Ia, baryon acoustic oscillations, gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters, and the growth factor. It shows a reasonable behavior in the sense that it increases with expansion from a small or vanishing value in the long past but starts decreasing at recent times. The later feature suggests that the equation of state parameter of dark energy does not cross the phantom divide.

Le Chatelier-Braun principle in cosmological physics

Assuming that dark energy may be treated as a fluid with a well defined temperature, close to equilibrium, we argue that if nowadays there is a transfer of energy between dark energy and dark matter, it must be such that the latter gains energy from the former and not the other way around.

The Integrated Sachs-Wolfe Effect in Interacting Dark Energy Models

Models with dark energy decaying into dark matter have been proposed in Cosmology to solve the coincidence problem. We study the effect of such coupling on the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies. The interaction changes the rate of evolution of the metric potentials, the growth rate of matter density perturbations and modifies the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe component of cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies, enhancing the effect. Cross-correlation of galaxy catalogs with CMB maps provides a model independent test to constrain the interaction. We particularize our analysis for a specific interacting model and show that galaxy catalogs with median redshifts $z_m=0.1-0.9$ can rule out models with an interaction parameter strength of $c^2\simeq 0.1$ better than 99.95% confidence level. Values of $c^2\le 0.01$ are compatible with the data and may account for the possible discrepancy between the fraction of dark energy derived from WMAP 3yr data and the fraction obtained from the ISW effect. Measuring the fraction of dark energy by these two methods could provide evidence of an interaction.

Dynamics of Interacting Quintessence Models: Observational Constraints

Interacting quintessence models have been proposed to explain or, at least, alleviate the coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration. In this paper we are concerned with two aspects of these kind of models: (i) the dynamical evolution of the model of Chimento et al. [L.P. Chimento, A.S. Jakubi, D. Pavon, and W. Zimdahl, Phys. Rev. D 67, 083513 (2003).], i.e., whether its cosmological evolution gives rise to a right sequence of radiation, dark matter and dark energy dominated eras, and (ii) whether the dark matter dark energy ratio asymptotically evolves towards a non-zero constant. After showing that the model correctly reproduces these eras, we correlate three data sets that constrain the interaction at three redshift epochs: $z\le 10^{4}$, $z=10^{3}$, and $z=1$. We discuss the model selection and argue that even if the model under consideration fulfills both requirements, it is heavily constrained by observation. The prospects that the coincidence problem can be explained by the coupling of dark matter to dark energy are not clearly favored by the data.

Thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter

We present a thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter. If holographic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. A small interaction between them may be viewed as a stable thermal fluctuation that brings a logarithmic correction to the equilibrium entropy. From this correction we obtain a physical expression for the interaction which is consistent with phenomenological descriptions and passes reasonably well the observational tests.

Interacting holographic dark energy

We demonstrate that a transition from decelerated to accelerated cosmic expansion arises as a pure interaction phenomenon if pressureless dark matter is coupled to holographic dark energy whose infrared cutoff scale is set by the Hubble length. In a spatially flat universe the ratio of the energy densities of both components remains constant through this transition, while it is subject to slow variations for non-zero spatial curvature. The coincidence problem is dynamized and reformulated in terms of the interaction rate. An early matter era is recovered since for negligible interaction at high redshifts the dark energy itself behaves as matter. A simple model for this dynamics is shown to fit the SN Ia data. The constant background energy density ratio simplifies the perturbation analysis which is characterized by non-adiabatic features.

Constraining interacting dark energy models with flux destabilization

A destabilization in the transfer energy flux from the vacuum to radiation, for two vacuum decay laws relevant to the dark energy problem, is analyzed using the Landau-Lifshitz fluctuation hydrodynamic theory. Assuming thermal (or near thermal) equilibrium between the vacuum and radiation, at the earliest epoch of the Universe expansion, we show that the law due to renormalization-group running of the cosmological constant term, with parameters chosen not to spoil the primordial nucleosynthesis scenario, does soon drive the flux to fluctuate beyond its statistical average value thereby distorting the cosmic background radiation spectrum beyond observational limits. While the law coming from the saturated holographic dark energy does not lead the flux to wildly fluctuate, a more realistic non--saturated form shows again such anomalous behavior.

Holographic dark energy in Brans-Dicke theory

In this Letter it is shown that when the holographic dark energy is combined with the Brans-Dicke field equations the transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion of the Universe can be more easily accounted for than when resort to the Einstein field equations is made. Likewise, the coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration gets more readily softened.

Cosmological perturbations in warm inflationary models with viscous pressure

Scalar and tensorial cosmological perturbations generated in warm inflationary scenarios whose matter-radiation fluid is endowed with a viscous pressure are considered. Recent observational data from the WMAP experiment are employed to restrict the parameters of the model. Although the effect of this pressure on the matter power spectrum is of the order of a few percent, it may be detected in future experiments.

The matter power spectrum as a tool to discriminate dark matterr-dark energy interactions

The coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration gets significantly alleviated when a suitable interaction between matter and dark energy, either of phantom type or not, enters the picture. We show that a class of models featuring this interaction fares rather well when contrasted with the anisotropies of the CMBR and the matter power spectrum. The latter test is very sensible to the interaction and may be used to discriminate between different models.

Bulk viscosity impact on the scenario of warm inflation

The decay of the inflaton into radiation and particles during the slow-roll suggests that these may interact with each other and that the latter may also decay into subproducts before inflation is completed. As a consequence, the fluid is no longer perfect and a non-negligible bulk viscosity necessarily sets in. We write the corresponding equations as an autonomous system and study the asymptotic behavior, the conditions for the existence of scaling solutions, and show that the late time effect of fluid dissipation alleviates the depletion of matter and increases the duration of inflation.

The Generalized Second Law in Dark Energy Dominated Universes

The generalized second law of gravitational thermodynamics is examined in scenarios where the dark energy dominates the cosmic expansion. For quintessence and phantom fields this law is fulfilled but it may fail when the dark energy is in the form of a Chaplygin gas. However, if a black hole is allowed in the picture, the law can be violated if the field is of phantom type.

Holographic dark energy and late cosmic acceleration

It has been persuasively argued that the number of the effective degrees of freedom of a macroscopic system is proportional to its area rather than to its volume. This entails interesting consequences for cosmology. Here we present a model based on this "holographic principle" that accounts for the present stage of accelerated expansion of the Universe and significantly alleviates the coincidence problem also for non-spatially flat cosmologies. Likewise, we comment on a recently proposed late transition to a fresh decelerated phase.

Interacting models of soft coincidence

The coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration is a serious riddle in connection with our understanding of the evolution of the Universe. In this paper we show that an interaction between the dark energy component (either phantom or quintessence) and dark matter can alleviate it. In this scenario the baryon component is independently conserved. This generalizes a previous study [S. del Campo, R. Herrera, and D. Pavon, Phys. Rev. D 71, 123529 (2005)] in which neither baryons nor phantom energy were considered.
