Curvature force and dark energy

A curvature self-interaction of the cosmic gas is shown to mimic a cosmological constant or other forms of dark energy, such as a rolling tachyon condensate or a Chaplygin gas. Any given Hubble rate and deceleration parameter can be traced back to the action of an effective curvature force on the gas particles. This force self-consistently reacts back on the cosmological dynamics. The links between an imperfect fluid description, a kinetic description with effective antifriction forces, and curvature forces, which represent a non-minimal coupling of gravity to matter, are established.

Dark energy, dissipation and the coincidence problem

In a recent paper we showed that a quintessence scalar field plus a dissipative matter fluid can drive late cosmic accelerated expansion and simultaneously solve the coincidence problem [1]. In this brief report we extend this result to the cases when the scalar field is replaced either by a Chaplygin gas or a tachyonic fluid.

Interacting quintessence solution to the coincidence problem

We show that a suitable interaction between a scalar field and a matter fluid in a spatially homogeneous and isotropic spacetime can drive the transition from a matter dominated era to an accelerated expansion phase and simultaneously solve the coincidence problem of our present Universe. For this purpose we study the evolution of the energy density ratio of these two components. We demonstrate that a stationary attractor solution is compatible with an accelerated expansion of the Universe. We extend this study to account for dissipation effects due to interactions in the dark matter fluid. Finally, Type Ia supernovae and primordial nucleosynthesis data are used to constrain the parameters of the model.

Dark energy and dissipation

Most of the models leading to a current state of cosmic accelerated expansion fail to address the coincidence problem, i.e., that the dark energy density and the energy density of the matter fluid are of the same order precisely today. We show that a way to drive late acceleration and simultaneously solve the aforesaid problem is assuming the matter fluid dissipative[1].

Cosmic acceleration from effective forces?

Accelerated expansion of the Universe may result from an anti-frictional force that is self-consistently exerted on cold dark matter (CDM). Cosmic anti-friction is shown to give rise to an effective negative pressure of the cosmic medium. While other models introduce a component of dark energy besides ``standard'' CDM, we resort to a phenomenological one-component model of CDM with internal self-interactions. We demonstrate how the dynamics of the LambdaCDM model may be recovered as a special case of cosmic anti-friction.

Cosmic anti-friction and accelerated expansion

We explain an accelerated expansion of the present universe, suggested from observations of supernovae of type Ia at high redshift, by introducing an anti-frictional force that is self-consistently exerted on the particles of the cosmic substratum. Cosmic anti-friction, which is intimately related to ``particle production'', is shown to give rise to an effective negative pressure of the cosmic medium. While other explanations for an accelerated expansion (cosmological constant, quintessence) introduce a component of dark energy besides ``standard'' cold dark matter (CDM) we resort to a phenomenological one-component model of CDM with internal self-interactions. We demonstrate how the dynamics of the LambdaCDM model may be recovered as a special case of cosmic anti-friction. We discuss the connection with two-component models and obtain an attractor behavior for the ratio of the energy densities of both components which provides a possible phenomenological solution to the coincidence problem.

Exact Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi solutions for matter-radiation decoupling

A new class of solutions of Einstein's equations is derived providing a physically plausible hydrodynamic description of cosmological matter in the radiation era of the Universe expansion. The solutions are characterized by the LTB metric with dissipative fluid sources, subjected to the following conditions: (i) tthe nonequilibrium state variables satisfy the equations of state of a mixture of relativistic and non-relativistic ideal gases, where the internal energy of the latter has been neglected, (ii) the particle numbers of the mixture components are independently conserved, (iii) the viscous stress is consistent with the transport equation and entropy balance law of extended irreversible thermodynamics with the coefficients of shear viscosity provided by kinetic theory. The Jeans mass at decoupling is of the same order of magnitude as that of baryons dominated models.

Relaxation versus collision times in the cosmological radiative era

We consider the Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi metric with an inhomogeneous viscous fluid source satisfying the equation of state of an interactive mixture of radiation and matter. Assuming conditions prior to the decoupling era, we apply Extended Irreversible Thermodynamcs (EIT) to this mixture. Using the full transport equation of EIT we show that the relaxation time of shear viscosity can be several orders of magnitude larger than the Thomson collision time between photons and electrons. A comparison with the ``truncated'' transport equation for these models reveals that the latter cannot describe properly the decoupling of matter and radiation

Varying c and Particle Horizons

We explore what restrictions may impose the second law of thermodynamics on varying speed of light theories. We find that the attractor scenario solving the flatness problem is consistent with the generalized second law at late time.

Cosmic acceleration without quintessence

It is argued that the Brans-Dicke theory may explain the present accelerated expansion of the universe without resorting to a cosmological constant or quintessence matter

Quintessence Energy and Dissipation

The combined effect of a dissipative fluid and quintessence energy can simultaneously drive an accelerated expansion phase at the present time and solve the coincidence problem of our current Universe. A solution compatible with the observed cosmic acceleration is succinctly presented.

Enlarged quintessence cosmology

We show that the combination of a fluid with a bulk dissipative pressure and quintessence matter can simultaneously drive an accelerated expansion phase and solve the coincidence problem of our current Universe. We then study some scenarios compatible with the observed cosmic acceleration.

Stable Inflationary Dissipative Cosmologies

The stability of the de Sitter era of cosmic expansion in spatially curved homogeneous isotropic universes is studied. The source of the gravitational field is an imperfect fluid such that the parameters that characterize it may change with time. In this way we extend our previous analysis for spatially-flat spaces as well as the work of Barrow.

Quintessence inhomogeneous cosmology

The Einstein-Klein-Gordon field equations are solved in a inhomogeneous shear-free universe containing a material fluid, a self-interacting scalar field, a variable cosmological term, and a heat flux. A quintessence-dominated scenario arises with a power-law accelerated expansion compatible with the currently observed homogeneous universe.

Exact inhomogeneous cosmologies whose source is a radiation-matter mixture with consistent thermodynamics

We derive a new class of exact solutions of Einstein's equations providing a physically plausible hydrodynamical description of cosmological matter in the radiative era ($10^6 K > T > 10^3 K$), between nucleosynthesis and decoupling. The solutions are characterized by the Lema\^ıtre-Tolman -Bondi metric with a viscous fluid source, subjected to the following conditions: (a) the equilibrium state variables satisfy the equation of state of a mixture of an ultra-relativistic and a non-relativistic ideal gases, where the internal energy of the latter has been neglected, (b) the particle numbers of the mixture components are independently conserved, (c) the viscous stress is consistent with the transport equation and entropy balance law of Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics, with the coefficient of shear viscosity provided by Kinetic Theory for the `radiative gas' model. The fulfilment of (a), (b) and (c) restricts initial conditions in terms of an initial value function, $Δ_i^{(s)}$, related to the average of spatial gradients of the fluctuations of photon entropy per baryon in the initial hypersurface. Constraints on the observed anisotropy of the microwave cosmic radiation and the condition that decoupling occurs at $T=T_{_D}\approx 4\times 10^3$ K yield an estimated value: $|Δ_i^{(s)}|\approx 10^{-8}$ which can be associated with a bound on promordial entropy fluctuations. The Jeans mass at decoupling is of the same order of magnitude as that of baryon dominated perturbation models ($\approx 10^{16} M_\odot$)

Inhomogeneous cosmologies with Q-matter and varying $Λ$

Starting from the inhomogeneous shear--free Nariai metric we show, by solving the Einstein--Klein--Gordon field equations, how a self--interacting scalar field plus a material fluid, a variable cosmological term and a heat flux can drive the universe to its currently observed state of homogeneous accelerated expansion. A quintessence scenario where power-law inflation takes place for a string-motivated potential in the late--time dominated field regime is proposed.

Stability of inflationary solutions driven by a changing dissipative fluid

In this paper the second Lyapunov method is used to study the stability of the de Sitter phase of cosmic expansion when the source of the gravitational field is a viscous fluid. Different inflationary scenarios related with reheating and decay of mini-blackholes into radiation are investigated using an effective fluid described by time--varying thermodynamical quantities.
