IIB flux non-commutativity and the global structure of field theories

We discuss the origin of the choice of global structure for six dimensional $(2,0)$ theories and their compactifications in terms of their realization from IIB string theory on ALE spaces. We find that the ambiguity in the choice of global structure on the field theory side can be traced back to a subtle effect that needs to be taken into account when specifying boundary conditions at infinity in the IIB orbifold, namely the known non-commutativity of RR fluxes in spaces with torsion. As an example, we show how the classification of $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories by Aharony, Seiberg and Tachikawa can be understood in terms of choices of boundary conditions for RR fields in IIB. Along the way we encounter a formula for the fractional instanton number of $\mathcal{N}=4$ ADE theories in terms of the torsional linking pairing for rational homology spheres. We also consider six-dimensional $(1,0)$ theories, clarifying the rules for determining commutators of flux operators for discrete 2-form symmetries. Finally, we analyze the issue of global structure for four dimensional theories in the presence of duality defects.

Chiral anomalies on a circle and their cancellation in F-theory

We study in detail how four-dimensional local anomalies manifest themselves when the theory is compactified on a circle. By integrating out the Kaluza-Klein modes in a way that preserves the four-dimensional symmetries in the UV, we show that the three-dimensional theory contains field-dependent Chern-Simons terms that appear at one-loop. These vanish if and only if the four-dimensional anomaly is canceled, so the anomaly is not lost upon compactification. We extend this analysis to situations where anomalies are canceled through a Green-Schwarz mechanism. We then use these results to show automatic cancellation of local anomalies in F-theory compactifications that can be obtained as a limit of M-theory on a smooth Calabi-Yau fourfold with background flux.

6d SCFTs and U(1) Flavour Symmetries

We study the behaviour of abelian gauge symmetries in six-dimensional N=(1,0) theories upon decoupling gravity and investigate abelian flavour symmetries in the context of 6d N=(1,0) SCFTs. From a supergravity perspective, the anomaly cancellation mechanism implies that abelian gauge symmetries can only survive as global symmetries as gravity is decoupled. The flavour symmetries obtained in this way are shown to be free of ABJ anomalies, and their 't Hooft anomaly polynomial in the decoupling limit is obtained explicitly. In an F-theory realisation the decoupling of abelian gauge symmetries implies that a mathematical object known as the height pairing of a rational section is not contractible as a curve on the base of an elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold. We prove this prediction from supergravity by making use of the properties of the Mordell-Weil group of rational sections. In the second part of this paper we study the appearance of abelian flavour symmetries in 6d N=(1,0) SCFTs. We elucidate both the geometric origin of such flavour symmetries in F-theory and their field theoretic interpretation in terms of suitable linear combinations of geometrically massive U(1)s. Our general results are illustrated in various explicit examples.

Exceptional $\mathcal N=3$ theories

We present a new construction of four dimensional $\mathcal N=3$ theories, given by M5 branes wrapping a $T^2$ in an M-theory U-fold background. The resulting setup generalizes the one used in the usual class $\mathcal S$ construction of four dimensional theories by using an extra discrete symmetry on the M5 worldvolume. Together with the M-theory U-fold description of $(0,2)$ $E$-type six-dimensional SCFTs, this allows to construct new, exceptional, $\mathcal N=3$ theories.

2d orbifolds with exotic supersymmetry

We analyse various two dimensional theories arising from compactification of type II and heterotic string theory on asymmetric orbifolds. We find extra supersymmetry generators arising from twisted sectors, giving rise to exotic supersymmetry algebras. Among others we discover new cases with a large number of supercharges, such as $\mathcal{N}=(20,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(32,0)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,24)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(48,0)$.

$\mathcal N=3$ four dimensional field theories

We briefly review a class of four dimensional $\mathcal N=3$ field theories constructed by taking a quotient of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM with gauge group $U(N)$. The quotient involves a discrete symmetry that only exists for specific, order one, values of the coupling constant, so the resulting theories are intrinsically strongly coupled. These theories admit a simple realization in string theory as the worldvolume theory of a stack of D3 branes probing a generalized orientifold plane, or S-fold. Their holographic dual is given by a non-trivial F-theory fibration over $AdS_5 \times S^5/\mathbb Z_k$ which is weakly curved but with the string coupling frozen at an order one value.

Supersymmetric Casimir Energy and $\mathrm{SL(3,\mathbb{Z})}$ Transformations

We provide a recipe to extract the supersymmetric Casimir energy of theories defined on primary Hopf surfaces directly from the superconformal index. It involves an $\mathrm{SL(3,\mathbb{Z})}$ transformation acting on the complex structure moduli of the background geometry. In particular, the known relation between Casimir energy, index and partition function emerges naturally from this framework, allowing rewriting of the latter as a modified elliptic hypergeometric integral. We show this explicitly for $\mathcal{N}=1$ SQCD and $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for all classical gauge groups, and conjecture that it holds more generally. We also use our method to derive an expression for the Casimir energy of the nonlagrangian $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT with $\mathrm{E_6}$ flavour symmetry. Furthermore, we predict an expression for Casimir energy of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ $\mathrm{SP(2N)}$ theory with $\mathrm{SU(8)\times U(1)}$ flavour symmetry that is part of a multiple duality network, and for the doubled $\mathcal{N}=1$ theory with enhanced $\mathrm{E}_7$ flavour symmetry.

Shift-symmetries and gauge coupling functions in orientifolds and F-theory

We investigate the field dependence of the gauge coupling functions of four-dimensional Type IIB orientifold and F-theory compactifications with space-time filling seven-branes. In particular, we analyze the constraints imposed by holomorphicity and covariance under shift-symmetries of the bulk and brane axions. This requires introducing quantum corrections that necessarily contain Riemann theta functions on the complex torus spanned by the D7-brane Wilson line moduli. Our findings hint towards a new underlying geometric structure for gauge coupling functions in string compactifications. We generalize this discussion to a genuine F-theory compactification on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfold. We perform the first general dimensional reduction of eleven-dimensional supergravity and dualization to the F-theory frame. The resulting effective action is compared with the circle reduction of a four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory. The F-theory geometry elegantly unifies bulk and brane degrees of freedom and allows us to infer non-trivial results about holomorphicity and shift-symmetries. For instance, we gain new insight into kinetic mixing of bulk and brane gauge fields.

N=3 four dimensional field theories

We introduce a class of four dimensional field theories constructed by quotienting ordinary $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM by particular combinations of R-symmetry and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ automorphisms. These theories appear naturally on the worldvolume of D3 branes probing terminal singularities in F-theory, where they can be thought of as non-perturbative generalizations of the O3 plane. We focus on cases preserving only 12 supercharges, where the quotient gives rise to theories with coupling fixed at a value of order one. These constructions possess an unconventional large $N$ limit described by a non-trivial F-theory fibration with base $AdS_5\times (S^5/\mathbb{Z}_k)$. Upon reduction on a circle the $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories flow to well-known $\mathcal{N}=6$ ABJM theories.

D6-branes and axion monodromy inflation

We develop new scenarios of large field inflation in type IIA string compactifications in which the key ingredient is a D6-brane that creates a potential for a B-field axion. The potential has the multi-branched structure typical of F-term axion monodromy models and, near its supersymmetric minima, it is described by a 4d supergravity model of chaotic inflation with a stabiliser field. The same statement applies to the D6-brane Wilson line, which can also be considered as an inflaton candidate. We analyse both cases in the context of type IIA moduli stabilisation, finding an effective potential for the inflaton system and a simple mechanism to lower the inflaton mass with respect to closed string moduli stabilised by fluxes. Finally, we compute the B-field potential for trans-Planckian field values by means of the DBI action. The effect of Planck suppressed corrections is a flattened potential which, in terms of the compactification parameters, interpolates between linear and quadratic inflation. This renders the cosmological parameters of these models compatible with current experimental bounds, with the tensor-to-scalar ratio ranging as 0.08 < r < 0.12

Yukawa hierarchies at the point of $E_8$ in F-theory

We analyse the structure of Yukawa couplings in local SU(5) F-theory models with $E_8$ enhancement. In this setting the $E_8$ symmetry is broken down to SU(5) by a 7-brane configuration described by T-branes, all the Yukawa couplings are generated in the vicinity of a point and only one family of quarks and leptons is massive at tree-level. The other two families obtain their masses when non-perturbative effects are taken into account, being hierarchically lighter than the third family. However, and contrary to previous results, we find that this hierarchy of fermion masses is not always appropriate to reproduce measured data. We find instead that different T-brane configurations breaking $E_8$ to SU(5) give rise to distinct hierarchical patterns for the holomorphic Yukawa couplings. Only some of these patterns allow to fit the observed fermion masses with reasonable local model parameter values, adding further constraints to the construction of F-theory GUTs. We consider an $E_8$ model where such appropriate hierarchy is realised and compute its physical Yukawas, showing that realistic charged fermions masses can indeed be obtained in this case.

Large field inflation from D-branes

We propose new large field inflation scenarios built on the framework of F-term axion monodromy. Our setup is based on string compactifications where D-branes create potentials for closed string axions via F-terms. Because the source of the axion potential is different from the standard sources of moduli stabilisation, it is possible to lower the inflaton mass as compared to other massive scalars. We discuss a particular class of models based on type IIA flux compactifications with D6-branes. In the small field regime they describe supergravity models of quadratic chaotic inflation with a stabiliser field. In the large field regime the inflaton potential displays a flattening effect due to Planck suppressed corrections, allowing to easily fit the cosmological parameters of the model within current experimental bounds.

On dualities for non-Abelian gauge theories with continuous center

Formulating gauge theories for gauge groups admitting a continuous center can require to include charged scalars to define a gauge-coupling function. We show that the gauge-fields in the center can be dualized into form-fields of dimension-dependent degree. The resulting theory admits a smaller gauge group that factorizes out the center, but contains a Chern-Simons type term coupling the scalars to the form-fields. As an explicit example we consider the gauge group being the Heisenberg group and show that the dual action only admits an Abelian gauge symmetry. We comment on the vacuum symmetries in these settings, their supersymmetrization, and point out their importance in string theory.

Non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries in F-theory

The presence of non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications is investigated. Such symmetries are shown to arise from seven-brane configurations in genuine F-theory settings without a weak string coupling description. Gauge fields on mutually non-local seven-branes are argued to gauge both R-R and NS-NS two-form bulk axions. The gauging is completed into a generalisation of the Heisenberg group with either additional seven-brane gauge fields or R-R bulk gauge fields. The former case relies on having seven-brane fluxes, while the latter case requires torsion cohomology and is analysed in detail through the M-theory dual. Remarkably, the M-theory reduction yields an Abelian theory that becomes non-Abelian when translated into the correct duality frame to perform the F-theory limit. The reduction shows that the gauge coupling function depends on the gauged scalars and transforms non-trivially as required for the groups encountered. This field dependence agrees with the expectations for the kinetic mixing of seven-branes and is unchanged if the gaugings are absent.

On D-brane moduli stabilisation

Standard results in 4d N=1 string compactifications assign a number of moduli to each space-time filling D-brane, computed by analysing the D-brane action in a fixed background. We revisit such conventional wisdom and argue that this naive counting of open string moduli is incorrect, in the sense that some of them will be lifted when making dynamical the bulk degrees of freedom. We explicitly discuss this effect for D6-branes wrapping special Lagrangian three-cycles, showing that some geometric and Wilson line moduli are lifted even before taking into account worldsheet instanton effects. From a 4d effective theory viewpoint the moduli lifting is due to an F-term potential, and can be deduced from the superpotentials in the literature. From a microscopic viewpoint the lifting is due to D-brane backreaction effects and flux quantisation in a compact manifold, and provides a mechanism for lifting Wilson line moduli. The latter applies to certain D6-branes and D7-brane Wilson lines, yielding new possibilities to build models of inflation in string theory.

U(1) mixing and D-brane linear equivalence

Linear equivalence is a criterion that compares submanifolds in the same homology class. We show that, in the context of type II compactifications with D-branes, this concept translates to the kinetic mixing between U(1) gauge symmetries arising in the open and closed string sectors. We argue that in generic D-brane models such mixing is experimentally detectable through the existence of milli-charged particles. We compute these gauge kinetic functions by classifying the 4d monopoles of a compactification and analyzing the Witten effect on them, finding agreement with previous results and extending them to more general setups. In particular, we compute the gauge kinetic functions mixing bulk and magnetized D-brane U(1)'s and derive a generalization of linear equivalence for these objects. Finally, we apply our findings to F-theory SU(5) models with hypercharge flux breaking.

Up-type quark masses in SU(5) F-theory models

F-theory SU(5) unification has been proposed as a scenario where the mass of the top quark is naturally large, as opposed to type II SU(5) models. We analyze this claim from the viewpoint of local SU(5) F-theory models, by explicitly computing the 10 x 10 x 5 Yukawa couplings that are developed in the vicinity of an E6 singularity. Realizing this singularity via T-branes allows for a non-trivial mass for the top quark, while lighter generations of up-type quarks still have vanishing Yukawa couplings. Nevertheless, we show that by taking instanton effects into account non-vanishing Yukawas are induced for all U-quark families, together with a hierarchical structure at the level of the superpotential. Finally, by solving for internal wavefunction profiles we compute physical U-quark Yukawa couplings and show that this F-theory scenario allows to describe the measured top quark mass, as well as the observed quotients of U-quark masses.

Discrete flavor symmetries in D-brane models

We study the presence of discrete flavor symmetries in D-brane models of particle physics. By analyzing the compact extra dimensions of these models one can determine when such symmetries exist both in the context of intersecting and magnetized D-brane constructions. Our approach allows to distinguish between approximate and exact discrete symmetries, and it can be applied to compactification manifolds with continuous isometries or to manifolds that only contain discrete isometries, like Calabi-Yau three-folds. We analyze in detail the class of rigid D-branes models based on a Z_2 x Z'_2 toroidal orientifold, for which the flavor symmetry group is either the dihedral group D_4 or tensor products of it. We construct explicit Pati-Salam examples in which families transform in non-Abelian representations of the flavor symmetry group, constraining Yukawa couplings beyond the effect of massive U(1) D-brane symmetries.
