Toroidal $\&$ orbifold compactifications at large D and D-duality

In this paper I will further investigate the spectrum of quantum gravity or string theories at large number of dimensions. We will see that volumes of certain orbifolds shrink at large D. It follows that the mass spectra of the leading Kaluza-Klein towers and also of wrapped brane states on these orbifolds possess a non-trivial dependence on D: KK modes become heavy at large D, whereas wrapped branes become light. This observation can be used either to apply the Large Dimension Conjecture or, as we will do, to investigate the possibility of a D-duality symmetry, which relates in gravity compactifications of different dimensions. We will set up the general rules for D-duality in higher dimensional gravity. However due to existence of the critical dimensions, D-duality is quite restricted in string theory. As simple tests for D-duality in string theory, we will discuss the duality between M-theory on a two-dimensional orbifold, namely the Möbius strip, and an IIB S-fold on a circle, which corresponds to the heterotic CHL string, as well the duality between a (truncated) 12-dimensional theory on a three-dimensional orbifold and another IIB S-fold compactification. Finally I also comment on the possible existence of exotic theories at large D.

Geometric flow equations for the number of space-time dimensions

In this paper we consider new geometric flow equations, called D-flow, which describe the variation of space-time geometries under the change of the number of dimensions. The D-flow is originating from the non-trivial dependence of the volume of space-time manifolds on the number of space-time dimensions and it is driven by certain curvature invariants. We will work out specific examples of D-flow equations and their solutions for the case of D-dimensional spheres and Freund-Rubin Compactification. The discussion of the paper is motivated from recent swampland considerations, where the number $D$ of space-time dimensions is treated as a new swampland parameter.

Leptophilic U(1) Massive Vector Bosons from Large Extra Dimensions

We demonstrate that the discrepancy between the anomalous magnetic moment measured at BNL and Fermilab and the Standard Model prediction could be explained within the context of low-scale gravity and large extra-dimensions. The dominant contribution to $(g-2)_μ$ originates in Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations (of the lepton gauge boson) which do not mix with quarks (to lowest order) and therefore can be quite light avoiding LHC constraints. We show that the KK contribution to $(g-2)_μ$ is universal with the string scale entering as an effective cutoff. The KK tower provides a unequivocal distinctive signal which will be within reach of the future muon smasher.

The Gravitino and the Swampland

We propose a new swampland conjecture stating that the limit of vanishing gravitino mass corresponds to the massless limit of an infinite tower of states and to the consequent breakdown of the effective field theory. We test our proposal in large classes of models coming from compactification of string theory to four dimensions, where we identify the Kaluza-Klein nature of the tower of states becoming light. We point out a general relation between the gravitino mass and abelian gauge coupling in models with extended supersymmetry, which can survive also in examples with minimal supersymmetry. This allows us to connect our conjecture to other well established swampland conjectures, such as the weak gravity conjecture or the absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity. We discuss phenomenological implications of our conjecture in (quasi-)de Sitter backgrounds and extract a lower bound for the gravitino mass in terms of the Hubble parameter.

Muon ${g-2}$ discrepancy within D-brane string compactifications

Very recently, the Muon $g-2$ experiment at Fermilab has confirmed the E821 Brookhaven result, which hinted at a deviation of the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the Standard Model (SM) expectation. The combined results from Brookhaven and Fermilab show a difference with the SM prediction $δa_μ= (251 \pm 59) \times 10^{-11}$ at a significance of $4.2σ$, strongly indicating the presence of new physics. Motivated by this new result we reexamine the contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from both: (i)~the ubiquitous $U(1)$ gauge bosons of D-brane string theory constructions and (ii)~the Regge excitations of the string. We show that, for a string scale ${\cal O} ({\rm PeV})$, the contribution from anomalous $U(1)$ gauge bosons which couple to hadrons could help to reduce (though not fully eliminate) the discrepancy reported by the Muon $g-2$ Collaboration. Consistency with null results from LHC searches of new heavy vector bosons imparts the dominant constraint. We demonstrate that the contribution from Regge excitations is strongly suppressed as it was previously conjectured. We also comment on contributions from Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes, which could help resolve the $δa_μ$ discrepancy. In particular, we argue that for 4-stack intersecting D-brane models, the KK excitations of the $U(1)$ boson living on the lepton brane would not couple to hadrons and therefore can evade the LHC bounds while fully bridging the $δa_μ$ gap observed at Brookhaven and Fermilab.

S-dual Inflation and the String Swampland

The Swampland de Sitter conjecture in combination with upper limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ derived from observations of the cosmic microwave background endangers the paradigm of slow-roll single field inflation. This conjecture constrains the first and the second derivatives of the inflationary potential in terms of two ${\cal O} (1)$ constants $c$ and $c'$. In view of these restrictions we reexamine single-field inflationary potentials with $S$-duality symmetry, which ameliorate the unlikeliness problem of the initial condition. We compute $r$ at next-to-leading order in slow-roll parameters for the most general form of $S$-dual potentials and confront model predictions to constraints imposed by the de Sitter conjecture. We find that $c \sim {\cal O} (10^{-1})$ and $c' \sim {\cal O} (10^{-2})$ can accommodate the 95\% CL upper limit on $r$. By imposing at least 50 $e$-folds of inflation with the effective field theory description only valid over a field displacement ${\cal O} (1)$ when measured as a distance in the target space geometry, we further restrict $c \sim {\cal O} (10^{-2})$, while the constraint on $c'$ remains unchanged. We comment on how to accommodate the required small values of $c$ and $c'$.

Integrability ex machina

Determining whether a dynamical system is integrable is generally a difficult task which is currently done on a case by case basis requiring large human input. Here we propose and test an automated method to search for the existence of relevant structures, the Lax pair and Lax connection respectively. By formulating this search as an optimization problem, we are able to identify appropriate structures via machine learning techniques. We test our method on standard systems of classical integrability and find that we can single out some integrable deformations of a system. Due to the ambiguity in defining a Lax pair our algorithm identifies novel Lax pairs which can be easily verified analytically.

Dark energy, Ricci-nonflat spaces, and the Swampland

It was recently pointed out that the existence of dark energy imposes highly restrictive constraints on effective field theories that satisfy the Swampland conjectures. We provide a critical confrontation of these constraints with the cosmological framework emerging from the Salam-Sezgin model and its string realization by Cvetic, Gibbons, and Pope. We also discuss the implication of the constraints for string model building.

The Black Hole Entropy Distance Conjecture and Black Hole Evaporation

We extend the recently proposed Black Hole Entropy Distance Conjecture to the case of charged black holes in de Sitter space. By systematically studying distances in the space of black hole geometries with multiple horizons, we find that the distance is generically related to the logarithm of the entropy. From the infinite distance conjecture this predicts the appearance of a massless tower of modes in the limit of infinite entropy. Further, we study the evaporation of these black holes and relate it to the geometric distance. We find that the corresponding distance to the final stage of evaporation is finite. We conclude that evaporation does not lead to the appearance of a light tower of black hole microstates.

The Swampland at Large Number of Space-Time Dimensions

We discuss some aspects of swampland constraints - especially the swampland distance conjecture - in a large number of space-time dimensions $D$. We analyze Kaluza-Klein (KK) states at large $D$ and find that some KK spectra possess an interesting dependence on $D$. On the basis of these observations we propose a new large dimension conjecture. We apply it to KK states of compactifications to anti-de Sitter backgrounds where it predicts an upper bound on the dimension of space-time as a function of its characteristic radius. We also apply our conjecture to black hole spacetimes, whose entropies have a $D$-dependence very similar to that of the KK spectrum.

Anomalous $U(1)$ Gauge Bosons as Light Dark Matter in String Theory

Present experiments are sensitive to very weakly coupled extra gauge symmetries which motivates further investigation of their appearance in string theory compactifications and subsequent properties. We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes, with gauge bosons due to strings attached to stacks of D-branes and chiral matter due to strings stretching between intersecting D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale saturates the current LHC limit and that the theory is weakly coupled, we show that (anomalous) $U(1)$ gauge bosons which propagate into the bulk are compelling light dark matter candidates. We comment on the possible relevance of the $U(1)$ gauge bosons, which are universal in intersecting D-brane models, to the observed $3σ$ excess in XENON1T.

Higuchi Bound on Slow Roll Inflation and the Swampland

In this paper we study the implications of the generalized Higuchi bound on massive spin-two fields for the derivative of the scalar potential within bimetric theory. In contrast to the recent de Sitter swampland conjecture, an upper bound on the derivate of the scalar potential follows from the generalized Higuchi bound. In combination, this leaves a window for the derivate of the scalar potential. We discuss this bound in several representative bimetric models and parameter regions.

Massive gravitons on the Landscape and the AdS Distance Conjecture

This work regards IIB string theory embeddings of massive and bi-metric $AdS_{4}$ gravity where the spectrum of the theory includes multiple massive gravitons. The corresponding geometry consists of multiple $AdS_{4}\times_{w}\mathcal{M}_{6}$ spacetimes coupled by Janus throats of different radii. In the second part of this work, the AdS distance conjecture is studied in the above context and it is shown that the scale of the predicted infinite tower of light states is related to the breakdown scale of the effective field theory.

Geometric Flow Equations for Schwarzschild-AdS Space-time and Hawking-Page Phase Transition

Following the recent observation that the Ricci flow and the infinite distance swampland conjecture are closely related to each other, we will investigate in this paper geometric flow equations for AdS space-time geometries. First, we consider the so called Yamabe and Ricci-Bourguignon flows and we show that these two flows - in contrast to the Ricci flow - lead to infinite distance fixed points for product spaces like $AdS_d\times S^p$, where $AdS_d$ denotes d-dimensional AdS space and $S^p$ corresponds to a p-dimensional sphere. Second, we consider black hole geometries in AdS space time geometries and their behaviour under the Yamabe and Ricci-Bourguignon flows. Specifically we will examine if and how the AdS black holes will undergo a Hawking-Page phase transition under the Ricci flow, the Yamabe flow and under the general Ricci-Bourguignon flow.

AdS$_2$ Type-IIA Solutions and Scale Separation

In this note we examine certain classes of solutions of IIA theory without sources, of the form AdS$_2\times {\cal M}^{(1)}\times \dots \times {\cal M}^{(n)}$, where ${\cal M}^{(i)}$ are Riemannian spaces. We show that large hierarchies of curvatures can be obtained between the different factors, however the absolute value of the scalar curvature of AdS$_2$ must be of the same order or larger than the absolute values of the scalar curvatures of all the other factors.

Open-String Non-Associativity in an R-flux Background

We derive the commutation relations for open-string coordinates on D-branes in non-geometric background spaces. Starting from D0-branes on a three-dimensional torus with H-flux, we show that open strings with end points on D3-branes in a three-dimensional R-flux background exhibit a non-associative phase-space algebra, which is similar to the non-associative R-flux algebra of closed strings. Therefore, the effective open-string gauge theory on the D3-branes is expected to be a non-associative gauge theory. We also point out differences between the non-associative phase space structure of open and closed strings in non-geometric backgrounds, which are related to the different structure of the world-sheet commutators of open and closed strings.

Deformed $σ$-models, Ricci flow and Toda field theories

It is shown that the Pohlmeyer map of a $σ$-model with a toric two-dimensional target space naturally leads to the `sausage' metric. We then elaborate the trigonometric deformation of the $\mathrm{CP}^{n-1}$-model, proving that its $T$-dual metric is Kähler and solves the Ricci flow equation. Finally, we discuss a relation between flag manifold $σ$-models and Toda field theories.

Swampland, Gradient Flow and Infinite Distance

In the first part of this paper we will work out a close and so far not yet noticed correspondence between the swampland approach in quantum gravity and geometric flow equations in general relativity, most notably the Ricci flow. We conjecture that following the gradient flow towards a fixed point, which is at infinite distance in the space of background metrics, is accompanied by an infinite tower of states in quantum gravity. In case of the Ricci flow, this conjecture is in accordance with the generalized distance and AdS distance conjectures, which were recently discussed in the literature, but it should also hold for more general background spaces. We argue that the entropy functionals of gradient flows provide a useful definition of the generalized distance in the space of background fields. In particular we give evidence that for the Ricci flow the distance $Δ$ can be defined in terms of the mean scalar curvature of the manifold, $Δ\sim\log \bar R$. For a more general gradient flow, the distance functional also depends on the string coupling constant. In the second part of the paper we will apply the generalized distance conjecture to gravity theories with higher curvature interactions, like higher derivative $R^2$ and $W^2$ terms. We will show that going to the weak coupling limit of the higher derivative terms corresponds to the infinite distance limit in metric space and hence this limit must be accompanied by an infinite tower of light states. For the case of the $R^2$ or $W^2$ couplings, this limit corresponds to the limit of a small cosmological constant or, respectively, to a light additional spin-two field in gravity. In general we see that the limit of small higher curvature couplings belongs to the swampland in quantum gravity, just like the limit of a small $U(1)$ gauge coupling belongs to the swampland as well.
