The thermodynamic formalism and central limit theorem for stochastic perturbations of circle maps with a break

Let $T\in C^{2+\varepsilon}(S^{1}\setminus\{x_{b}\}),\,\,\varepsilon>0,$ be an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism with rotation number $ρ_T=[k_{1},k_{2},..,k_{m},1,1,...],\,\,m\geq1$, and a single break point $x_{b}$. We consider the stochastic sequence $ \overline{z}_{n+1}(z_0,σ) = T(\overline{z}_{n}) + σξ_{n+1},\,\overline{z}_{0}:=z_0\in S^1$, where $\{ξ_{n},\,n=1,2,...\}$ is a sequence of real valued independent mean zero random variables of comparable sizes, and $σ> 0$ is a small parameter. Using the renormalization group technique de la Llave et al. proved for stochastic perturbations of one-dim. interval maps a central limit theorem (CLT) and the rate of convergence. In the present paper we extend their results to circle homeomorphisms with a break point by using the thermodynamic formalism constructed recently by Dzhalilov et al.. for such maps. This formalism and the dynamical partition $P_n(T,x_b)$ determined by the break point allows us, following the work of Vul et al., to establish a symbolic dynamics for any $z\in S^1$ and to define a transfer operator whose leading eigenvalue is used to bound the Lyapunov function. For a special sequence $\{n_m\}, m\to\infty$, the barycentric coefficient of any $z_k=T^kz_0$ not intersecting the orbit of $x_b$ is universally bounded in the corresponding interval in $P_{n_m}(T,x_b)$. A Taylor expansion of $ \overline{z}_{n}(z_0,σ)$ in $\{ξ_i\}$ leads to the decomposition into the term $T^n(z_0)$, a linearized effective noise and higher order terms in $\{ξ_i\}$. This is possible however only in certain neighbourhoods $A_k^{n_m}$ of the points $T^k z_0$ not containing break points of $T^{q_{n_m}}$, with $q_{n}$ the first return times of $T$. Proving the CLT for the linearized process leads finally to the proof of our extension of results of de la Llave et al..

Conjugacies between P-homeomorphisms with several breaks

Let $f_{i},i=1,2$ be orientation preserving circle homeomorphisms with a finite number of break points, at which the first derivatives $Df_{i}$ have jumps, and with identical irrational rotation number $ρ=ρ_{f_{1}}=ρ_{f_{2}}.$ The jump ratio of $f_{i}$ at the break point $b$ is denoted by $σ_{f_{i}}(b)$, i.e. $σ_{f_{i}}(b):=\frac{Df_{i}(b-0)}{Df_{i}(b+0)}$. Denote by $σ_{f_{i}}, i=1,2,$ the total jump ratio given by the product over all break points $b$ of the jump ratios $σ_{f_{i}}(b)$ of $f_{i}$. We prove, that for circle homeomorphisms $f_{i}, i=1,2$, which are $C^{2+\varepsilon}, \varepsilon>0$, on each interval of continuity of $Df_{i}$ and whose total jump ratios $σ_{f_{1}}$ and $σ_{f_{2}}$ do not coincide, the congugacy between $f_{1}$ and $f_{2}$ is a singular function.

Congruence properties of induced representations and their applications

In this paper we study congruence properties of the representations $U_α:=U^{PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})}_{χ_α}$ of the projective modular group ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ induced from a family $χ_α$ of characters for the Hecke congruence subgroup $Γ_0(4)$ basically introduced by A. Selberg. Interest in the representations $U_α$ stems from their appearance in the transfer operator approach to Selberg's zeta function for this Fuchsian group and character $χ_α$. Hence the location of the nontrivial zeros of this function and therefore also the spectral properties of the corresponding automorphic Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ_{Γ,χ_α}$ are closely related to their congruence properties. Even if as expected these properties of $U_α$ are easily shown to be equivalent to the ones well known for the characters $χ_α$, surprisingly, both the congruence and the noncongruence groups determined by their kernels are quite different: those determined by $χ_α$ are character groups of type I of the group $Γ_0(4)$, whereas those determined by $U_α$ are such character groups of $Γ(4)$. Furthermore, contrary to infinitely many of the groups $\ker χ_α$, whose noncongruence properties follow simply from Zograf's geometric method together with Selberg's lower bound for the lowest nonvanishing eigenvalue of the automorphic Laplacian, such arguments do not apply to the groups $\ker U_α$, the reason being, that they can have arbitrary genus $g\geq 0$, contrary to the groups $\ker χ_α$, which all have genus $g=0$.

On conjugations of circle homeomorphisms with two break points

Let $f_i\in C^{2+α}(S^1\setminus \{a_i,b_i\}), α>0, i=1,2$ be circle homeomorphisms with two break points $a_i,b_i$, i.e. discontinuities in the derivative $f_i$, with identical irrational rotation number $rho$ and $μ_1([a_1,b_1])= μ_2([a_2,b_2])$, where $μ_i$ are invariant measures of $f_i$. Suppose the products of the jump ratios of $Df_1$ and $Df_2$ do not coincide, i.e. $\frac{Df_1(a_1-0)}{Df_1(a_1+0)}\times \frac{Df_1(b_1-0)}{Df_1(b_1+0)}\neq \frac{Df_2(a_2-0)}{Df_2(a_2+0)}\times \frac{Df_2(b_2-0)}{Df_2(b_2+0)}$. Then the map $ψ$ conjugating $f_1$ and $f_2$ is a singular function, i.e. it is continuous on $S^1$, but $Dψ= 0$ a.e. with respect to Lebesgue measure

Perturbation of zeros of the Selberg zeta-function for $Γ_0(4)$

We study the asymptotic behavior of zeros of the Selberg zeta-function for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(4)$ as a function of a one-parameter family of characters tending to the trivial character. The motivation for the study comes from observations based on numerical computations. Some of the observed phenomena lead to precise theorems that we prove and compare with the original numerical results.

Symmetries of the transfer operator for $Γ_0(N)$ and a character deformation of the Selberg zeta function for $Γ_0(4)$

The transfer operator for $Γ_0(N)$ and trivial character $χ_0$ possesses a finite group of symmetries generated by permutation matrices $P$ with $P^2=id$. Every such symmetry leads to a factorization of the Selberg zeta function in terms of Fredholm determinants of a reduced transfer operator. These symmetries are related to the group of automorphisms in $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of the Maass wave forms of $Γ_0(N)$ . For the group $Γ_0(4)$ and Selberg's character $χ_α$ there exists just one non-trivial symmetry operator $P$. The eigenfunctions of the corresponding reduced transfer operator with eigenvalue $λ=\pm 1$ are related to Maass forms even respectively odd under a corresponding automorphism. It then follows from a result of Sarnak and Phillips that the zeros of the Selberg function determined by the eigenvalues $λ=-1$ of the reduced transfer operator stay on the critical line under the deformation of the character. From numerical results we expect that on the other hand all the zeros corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ=+1$ leave this line for $α$ turning away from zero.

Nearest lambda_q-multiple fractions

We discuss the nearest lambda_q--multiple continued fractions and their duals for lambda_q = 2 cos(pi/q) which are closely related to the Hecke triangle groups G_q, q=3,4,... . They have been introduced in the case q=3 by Hurwitz and for even q by Nakada. These continued fractions are generated by interval maps f_q respectively f_q^* which are conjugate to subshifts over infinite alphabets. We generalize to arbitrary q a result of Hurwitz concerning the G_q-- and f_q-equivalence of points on the real line. The natural extension of the maps f_q and f_q^* can be used as a Poincare map for the geodesic flow on the Hecke surfaces G_q\H and allows to construct the transfer operator for this flow.

The transfer operator for the Hecke triangle groups

In this paper we extend the transfer operator approach to Selberg's zeta function for cofinite Fuchsian groups to the Hecke triangle groups G_q, q=3,4,..., which are non-arithmetic for q \not= 3,4,6. For this we make use of a Poincare map for the geodesic flow on the corresponding Hecke surfaces which has been constructed in arXiv:0801.3951 and which is closely related to the natural extension of the generating map for the so called Hurwitz-Nakada continued fractions. We derive simple functional equations for the eigenfunctions of the transfer operator which for eigenvalues rho =1 are expected to be closely related to the period functions of Lewis and Zagier for these Hecke triangle groups.

Symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on Hecke surfaces

In this paper we discuss a coding and the associated symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on Hecke triangle surfaces. We construct an explicit cross section for which the first return map factors through a simple (explicit) map given in terms of the generating map of a particular continued fraction expansion closely related to the Hecke triangle groups. We also obtain explicit expressions for the associated first return times.

Singular measures of circle homeomorphisms with two break points

Let $T_{f}$ be a circle homeomorphism with two break points $a_{b},c_{b}$ and irrational rotation number $\varrho_{f}$. Suppose that the derivative $Df$ of its lift $f$ is absolutely continuous on every connected interval of the set $S^{1}\backslash\{a_{b},c_{b}\}$, that $DlogDf \in L^{1}$ and the product of the jump ratios of $ Df $ at the break points is nontrivial, i.e. $\frac{Df_{-}(a_{b})}{Df_{+}(a_{b})}\frac{Df_{-}(c_{b})}{Df_{+}(c_{b})}\neq1$. We prove that the unique $T_{f}$- invariant probability measure $μ_{f}$ is then singular with respect to Lebesgue measure $l$ on $S^{1}$.

On time-dependent quasi-exactly solvable models

In this paper we demonstrate that there exists a close relationship between quasi-exactly solvable quantum models and two special classes of classical dynamical systems. One of these systems can be considered a natural generalization of the multi-particle Calogero-Moser model and the second one is a classical matrix model.

Bethe Ansatz in Quantum Mechanics. 1. The Inverse Method of Separation of Variables

In this paper we formulate a general method for building completely integrable quantum systems. The method is based on the use of the so-called multi-parameter spectral equations, i.e. equations with several spectral parameters. We show that any such equation, after eliminating some spectral parameters by means of the so-called inverse procedure of separation of variables can be reduced to a certain completely integrable model. Starting with exactly or quasi-exactly solvable multi-parameter spectral equations we, respectively, obtain exactly or quasi-exactly solvable integrable models.

Bethe Ansatz in Quantum Mechanics. 2. Construction of Multi-Parameter Spectral Equations

In this paper we propose a simple method for building exactly solvable multi-parameter spectral equations which in turn can be used for constructing completely integrable and exactly solvable quantum systems. The method is based on the use of a special functional relation which we call the scalar triangle equation because of its similarity to the classical Yang-Baxter equation.

Dynamical zeta functions for Artin's billiard and the Venkov--Zograf factorization formula

Dynamical zeta functions are expected to relate the Schrödinger operator's spectrum to the periodic orbits of the corresponding fully chaotic Hamiltonian system. The relationsship is exact in the case of surfaces of constant negative curvature. The recently found factorisation of the Selberg zeta function for the modular surface is known to correspond to a decomposition of the Schrödinger operator's eigenfunctions into two sets obeying different boundary condition on Artin's billiard. Here we express zeta functions for Artin's billiard in terms of generalized transfer operators, providing thereby a new dynamical proof of the above interpretation of the factorization formula. This dynamical proof is then extended to the Artin--Venkov--Zograf formula for finite coverings of the modular surface.
