Any Light Particle Searches with ALPS II: first science results

The light-shining-through-a-wall experiment ALPS II at DESY in Hamburg searched for axions and similar lightweight particles in its first science campaign from February to May 2024. No evidence for the existence of such particles was found. For pseudoscalar bosons like the axion, with masses below about 0.1 meV, we achieved a limit for the di-photon coupling strength of 1.5e-9 1/GeV at a 95% confidence level. This is more than a factor of 20 improvement compared to all previous similar experiments. We also provide limits on photon interactions for scalar, vector and tensor bosons. An achievement of this first science campaign is the demonstration of stable operation and robust calibration of the complex experiment. Currently, the optical system of ALPS II is being upgraded aiming for another two orders of magnitude sensitivity increase.

Straightening of Superconducting HERA Dipoles for the Any-Light-Particle-Search Experiment ALPS II

At DESY the ALPS II experiment is being installed in the HERA tunnel to search for axion like particles (ALPs). A laser beam will be injected into a string of superconducting HERA dipole magnets, to produce ALPs. After passing a light tight wall, the ALPs can reconvert into photons in a second string of HERA dipoles. The sensitivity of the experiment will be increased by two mode-matched optical cavities before and behind the wall. The curvature of the magnets limits the performance of the optical resonators, Therefore the aperture for the optical resonators inside the HERA dipoles was increased by straightening the curved magnet yoke. The procedure of straightening the HERA dipoles is described in this report.

Any Light Particle Search II -- Technical Design Report

This document constitutes an excerpt of the Technical Design Report for the second stage of the "Any Light Particle Search" (ALPS-II) at DESY as submitted to the DESY PRC in August 2012 and reviewed in November 2012. ALPS-II is a "Light Shining through a Wall" experiment which searches for photon oscillations into weakly interacting sub-eV particles. These are often predicted by extensions of the Standard Model and motivated by astrophysical phenomena. The first phases of the ALPS-II project were approved by the DESY management on February 21st, 2013.
