Evaluating the Prediction of Wind Power Ramping Events in the Belgian Offshore Zone

Evaluations are presented for the prediction of wind power ramping events in the Belgian Offshore Zone. Two models from the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium are verified: the operational ALARO-4km and its version with Wind Farm Parameterization (WFP). Power predictions are produced using power curves and machine learning (ML). As standard metrics such as MAE are insufficient for evaluating ramps, the proposed framework incorporates time and power buffers, enabling a flexible assessment that tolerates minor errors. Results indicate that WFP models enhance ramping prediction skill, while ML provides more balanced forecasts by reducing both misses and false alarms. A Ramp Alignment Score is also introduced to quantify temporal errors by forecast lead time, confirming that WFP models yield smaller average timing errors. Moreover, the framework reveals that severe precipitation is a strong indicator of large, predictable ramps, whereas lighter precipitation is associated with greater forecast errors.

A comparison of stretched-grid and limited-area modelling for data-driven regional weather forecasting

Regional machine learning weather prediction (MLWP) models based on graph neural networks have recently demonstrated remarkable predictive accuracy, outperforming numerical weather prediction models at lower computational costs. In particular, limited-area model (LAM) and stretched-grid model (SGM) approaches have emerged for generating high-resolution regional forecasts, based on initial conditions from a regional (re)analysis. While LAM uses lateral boundaries from an external global model, SGM incorporates a global domain at lower resolution. This study aims to understand how the differences in model design impact relative performance and potential applications. Specifically, the strengths and weaknesses of these two approaches are identified for generating deterministic regional forecasts over Europe. Using the Anemoi framework, models of both types are built by minimally adapting a shared architecture and trained using global and regional reanalyses in a near-identical setup. Several inference experiments have been conducted to explore their relative performance and highlight key differences. Results show that both LAM and SGM are competitive deterministic MLWP models with generally accurate and comparable forecasting performance over the regional domain. Various differences were identified in the performance of the models across applications. LAM is able to successfully exploit high-quality boundary forcings to make predictions within the regional domain and is suitable in contexts where global data is difficult to acquire. SGM is fully self-contained for easier operationalisation, can take advantage of more training data and significantly surpasses LAM in terms of (temporal) generalisability. Our paper can serve as a starting point for meteorological institutes to guide their choice between LAM and SGM in developing an operational data-driven forecasting system.

Superconformal indices and localization in $N=2B$ quantum mechanics

Superconformal `type B' quantum mechanical sigma models arise in a variety of interesting contexts, such as the description of D-brane bound states in an AdS$_2$ decoupling limit. Focusing on $N=2B$ models, we study superconformal indices which count short multiplets and provide an alternative to the standard Witten index, as the latter suffers from infrared issues. We show that the basic index receives contributions from lowest Landau level states in an effective magnetic field and that, due to the noncompactness of the target space, it is typically divergent. Fortunately, the models of interest possess an additional target space isometry which allows for the definition of a well-behaved refined index. We compute this index using localization of the functional integral and find that the result agrees with a naive application of the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula outside of it's starting assumptions. In the simplest examples, this formula can also be directly verified by explicitly computing the short multiplet spectrum.

Superconformal Symmetry and Index Theory

Formulation and supersymmetry localization of superconformal indices for $\mathcal{N}=2B$ superconformal quantum mechanics are reviewed by providing a generalization to fixed point submanifolds of resolved target space geometries, and future applications to gauged scaling quivers are discussed.

Dynamical de Sitter black holes in a quasi-stationary expansion

We revisit and improve the analytic study arXiv:1804.03462 of spherically symmetric but dynamical black holes in Einstein's gravity coupled to a real scalar field. We introduce a series expansion in a small parameter $ε$ that implements slow time dependence. At the leading order, the generic solution is a quasi-stationary Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) metric, i.e. one where time-dependence enters only through the mass and cosmological constant parameters of SdS. The two coupled ODEs describing the leading order time dependence are solved up to quadrature for an arbitrary scalar potential. Higher order corrections can be consistently computed, as we show by explicitly solving the Einstein equations at the next to leading order as well. We comment on how the quasi-stationary expansion we introduce here is equivalent to the non-relativistic $1/c$ expansion.

A 3+1 formulation of the 1/c expansion of General Relativity

Expanding General Relativity in the inverse speed of light, 1/c, leads to a nonrelativistic gravitational theory that extends the Post-Newtonian expansion by the inclusion of additional strong gravitational potentials. This theory has a fully covariant formulation in the language of Newton-Cartan geometry but we revisit it here in a 3+1 formulation. The appropriate 3+1 formulation of General Relativity is one first described by Kol and Smolkin (KS), rather than the better known Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. As we review, the KS formulation is dual to the ADM formulation in that the role of tangent and co-tangent spaces get interchanged. In this 3+1 formulation the 1/c expansion can be performed in a more systematic and efficient fashion, something we use to extend the computation of the effective Lagrangian beyond what was previously achieved and to make a number of new all order observations.

Particle dynamics on torsional galilean spacetimes

We study free particle motion on homogeneous kinematical spacetimes of galilean type. The three well-known cases of Galilei and (A)dS--Galilei spacetimes are included in our analysis, but our focus will be on the previously unexplored torsional galilean spacetimes. We show how in well-chosen coordinates free particle motion becomes equivalent to the dynamics of a damped harmonic oscillator, with the damping set by the torsion. The realization of the kinematical symmetry algebra in terms of conserved charges is subtle and comes with some interesting surprises, such as a homothetic version of hamiltonian vector fields and a corresponding generalization of the Poisson bracket. We show that the Bargmann extension is universal to all galilean kinematical symmetries, but also that it is no longer central for nonzero torsion. We also present a geometric interpretation of this fact through the Eisenhart lift of the dynamics.

The geometry of gauged (super)conformal mechanics

Motivated by recently explored examples, we undertake a systematic study of conformal invariance in one-dimensional sigma models where an isometry group has been gauged. Perhaps surprisingly, we uncover classes of sigma models which are only scale invariant in their ungauged form and become fully conformally invariant only after gauging. In these cases the target space of the gauged sigma model satisfies a deformation of the well-known conformal geometry constraints. We consider bosonic models as well as their $\mathcal{N} = 1,2,4$ supersymmetric extensions. We solve the quantum ordering ambiguities in implementing (super-) conformal symmetry on the physical Hilbert space. Examples of our general results are furnished by the $D(2,1;0)$-invariant Coulomb branch quiver models relevant for black hole physics.

Geodesic motion on the group of boundary diffeomorphisms from Einstein's equations

In arXiv:1904.12869 it was shown how in an adiabatic limit the vacuum Einstein equations on a compact spatial region can be re-expressed as geodesic equations on the group of diffeomorphisms of the boundary. This is reminiscent of the program initiated by V. Arnold to reformulate models of continuum mechanics in terms of geodesic motion on diffeomorphism groups. We revisit some of the results of arXiv:1904.12869 in this light, pointing out parallels and differences with the typical examples in geometric continuum mechanics. We work out the case of 2 spatial dimensions in some detail.

Superconformal mechanics of AdS$_2$ D-brane boundstates

We explicitly construct a family of ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal mechanics of dyonic particles, generalizing the work of Anninos et al.\,\cite{Anninos:2013nra} to an arbitrary number of particles. These mechanics are obtained from a scaling limit of the effective Coulomb branch description of ${\mathcal N}=4$ quiver quantum mechanics describing D-branes in type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. In the supergravity description of these D-branes this limit changes the asymptotics to AdS$_2\times $S$^2\times$CY$_3$. We exhibit the $D(1,2;0)$ superconformal symmetry and conserved charges of the mechanics in detail. In addition we present an alternative formulation as a sigma model on a hyperkähler manifold with torsion.

Supersymmetric Dyonic Strings in 6-Dimensions from 3-Dimensions

It was shown in arXiv:1410.7168 that compactifying $D=6$, $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ ungauged supergravity coupled to a single tensor multiplet on S$^3$ one gets a particular $D=3$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauged supergravity which is a consistent reduction. We construct two supersymmetric black string solutions in this 3-dimensional model with one and two active scalars respectively. Uplifting the first, one gets a dyonic string solution in $D=6$ that has been known for a long time. Whereas, uplifting the second solution, one finds a very interesting configuration where magnetic strings are located uniformly on a circle in a plane within the 4-dimensional flat transverse space and electric strings are distributed homogeneously inside this circle. Both solutions have $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times$ S$^3$ limits.

Oddity in nonrelativistic, strong gravity

We consider the presence of odd powers of the speed of light $c$ in the covariant nonrelativistic expansion of General Relativity (GR). The term of order $c$ in the relativistic metric is a vector potential that contributes at leading order in this expansion and describes strong gravitational effects outside the (post-)Newtonian regime. The nonrelativistic theory of the leading order potentials contains the full non-linear dynamics of the stationary sector of GR.

Strolling along gravitational vacua

We consider General Relativity (GR) on a space-time whose spatial slices are compact manifolds $M$ with non-empty boundary $\partial M$. We argue that this theory has a non-trivial space of `vacua', consisting of spatial metrics obtained by an action on a reference flat metric by diffeomorpisms that are non-trivial at the boundary. In an adiabatic limit the Einstein equations reduce to geodesic motion on this space of vacua with respect to a particular pseudo-Riemannian metric that we identify. We show how the momentum constraint implies that this metric is fully determined by data on the boundary $\partial M$ only, while the Hamiltonian constraint forces the geodesics to be null. We comment on how the conserved momenta of the geodesic motion correspond to an infinite set of conserved boundary charges of GR in this setup.

Renormalons in quantum mechanics

We present a nonrelativistic one-particle quantum mechanics whose perturbative S-matrix exhibits a renormalon divergence that we explicitely compute. The potential of our model is the sum of the 2d Dirac $δ$-potential -- known to require renormalization -- and a 1d Dirac $δ$-potential tilted at an angle. We argue that renormalons are not specific to this example and exist for a much wider class of potentials. The ambiguity in the Borel summation of the perturbative series due to the renormalon pole is resolved by the physical condition of causality through careful consideration of the $iε$ prescription. The suitably summed perturbative result coincides with the exact answer obtained through the operator formalism for scattering.

Torsional Newton-Cartan gravity from the large $c$ expansion of General Relativity

We revisit the manifestly covariant large $c$ expansion of General Relativity, $c$ being the speed of light. Assuming the relativistic connection has no pole in $c^{-2}$, this expansion is known to reproduce Newton-Cartan gravity and a covariant version of Post-Newtonian corrections to it. We show that relaxing this assumption leads to the inclusion of twistless torsion in the effective non-relativistic theory. We argue that the resulting TTNC theory is an effective description of a non-relativistic regime of General Relativity that extends Newtonian physics by including strong gravitational time dilation.

Torsional Newton-Cartan gravity and strong gravitational fields

We review how the large $c$ expansion of General Relativity leads to an effective theory in the form of Twistless Torsional Newton-Cartan gravity. We show how this is a strong field expansion around the static sector of General Relativity and illustrate this through two examples.

A twist on multicenter AdS$_2$ solutions

The multicenter solutions of 4d ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity contain a subset of scaling solutions with vanishing total angular momentum. In a near limit those solutions are asymptotically locally AdS$_2\times$ S$^2$, but we show that a higher moment of angular momentum contributes a subtle twist, rotating the S$^2$ with time. This provides some potential hair distinguishing the asymptotics of these scaling solutions from the near horizon geometry of an extremal BPS black hole.

Strolling along gauge theory vacua

We consider classical, pure Yang-Mills theory in a box. We show how a set of static electric fields that solve the theory in an adiabatic limit correspond to geodesic motion on the space of vacua, equipped with a particular Riemannian metric that we identify. The vacua are generated by spontaneously broken global gauge symmetries, leading to an infinite number of conserved momenta of the geodesic motion. We show that these correspond to the soft multipole charges of Yang-Mills theory.
