Correlated bosons on a lattice: Dynamical mean-field theory for Bose-Einstein condensed and normal phases

We formulate a bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (B-DMFT) which provides a comprehensive, thermodynamically consistent framework for the theoretical investigation of correlated lattice bosons. The B-DMFT is applicable for arbitrary values of the coupling parameters and temperature and becomes exact in the limit of high spatial dimensions d or coordination number Z of the lattice. In contrast to its fermionic counterpart the construction of the B-DMFT requires different scalings of the hopping amplitudes with Z depending on whether the bosons are in their normal state or in the Bose-Einstein condensate. A detailed discussion of how this conceptual problem can be overcome by performing the scaling in the action rather than in the Hamiltonian itself is presented. The B-DMFT treats normal and condensed bosons on equal footing and thus includes the effects caused by their dynamic coupling. It reproduces all previously investigated limits in parameter space such as the Beliaev-Popov and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximations and generalizes the existing mean-field theories of interacting bosons. The self-consistency equations of the B-DMFT are those of a bosonic single-impurity coupled to two reservoirs corresponding to bosons in the condensate and in the normal state, respectively. We employ the B-DMFT to solve a model of itinerant and localized, interacting bosons analytically. The local correlations are found to enhance the condensate density and the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) transition temperature T_{BEC}. This effect may be used experimentally to increase T_{BEC} of bosonic atoms in optical lattices.

Ferromagnetism and Kondo Insulator Behavior in the Disordered Periodic Anderson Model

The effect of binary alloy disorder on the ferromagnetic phases of f-electron materials is studied within the periodic Anderson model. We find that disorder in the conduction band can drastically enhance the Curie temperature due to an increase of the local f-moment. The effect may be explained qualitatively and even quantitatively by a simple theoretical ansatz. The emergence of an alloy Kondo insulator at non-integer filling is also pointed out.

Exact many-electron ground states on the diamond Hubbard chain

Exact ground states of interacting electrons on the diamond Hubbard chain in a magnetic field are constructed which exhibit a wide range of properties such as flat-band ferromagnetism and correlation induced metallic, half-metallic or insulating behavior. The properties of these ground states can be tuned by changing the magnetic flux, local potentials, or electron density.

Hopping on the Bethe lattice: Exact results for densities of states and dynamical mean-field theory

We derive an operator identity which relates tight-binding Hamiltonians with arbitrary hopping on the Bethe lattice to the Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor hopping. This provides an exact expression for the density of states (DOS) of a non-interacting quantum-mechanical particle for any hopping. We present analytic results for the DOS corresponding to hopping between nearest and next-nearest neighbors, and also for exponentially decreasing hopping amplitudes. Conversely it is possible to construct a hopping Hamiltonian on the Bethe lattice for any given DOS. These methods are based only on the so-called distance regularity of the infinite Bethe lattice, and not on the absence of loops. Results are also obtained for the triangular Husimi cactus, a recursive lattice with loops. Furthermore we derive the exact self-consistency equations arising in the context of dynamical mean-field theory, which serve as a starting point for studies of Hubbard-type models with frustration.

Exact Ground States of the Periodic Anderson Model in D=3 Dimensions

We construct a class of exact ground states of three-dimensional periodic Anderson models (PAMs) -- including the conventional PAM -- on regular Bravais lattices at and above 3/4 filling, and discuss their physical properties. In general, the f electrons can have a (weak) dispersion, and the hopping and the non-local hybridization of the d and f electrons extend over the unit cell. The construction is performed in two steps. First the Hamiltonian is cast into positive semi-definite form using composite operators in combination with coupled non-linear matching conditions. This may be achieved in several ways, thus leading to solutions in different regions of the phase diagram. In a second step, a non-local product wave function in position space is constructed which allows one to identify various stability regions corresponding to insulating and conducting states. The compressibility of the insulating state is shown to diverge at the boundary of its stability regime. The metallic phase is a non-Fermi liquid with one dispersing and one flat band. This state is also an exact ground state of the conventional PAM and has the following properties: (i) it is non-magnetic with spin-spin correlations disappearing in the thermodynamic limit, (ii) density-density correlations are short-ranged, and (iii) the momentum distributions of the interacting electrons are analytic functions, i.e., have no discontinuities even in their derivatives. The stability regions of the ground states extend through a large region of parameter space, e.g., from weak to strong on-site interaction U. Exact itinerant, ferromagnetic ground states are found at and below 1/4 filling.

Mott--Hubbard and Anderson Transitions in Dynamical Mean--Field Theory

The Anderson--Hubbard Hamiltonian at half--filling is investigated within dynamical mean--field theory at zero temperature. The local density of states is calculated by taking the geometric and arithmetic mean, respectively. The non--magnetic ground state phase diagrams obtained within the different averaging schemes are compared.

Mott--Hubbard transition vs. Anderson localization of correlated, disordered electrons

The phase diagram of correlated, disordered electrons is calculated within dynamical mean--field theory using the geometrically averaged (''typical'') local density of states. Correlated metal, Mott insulator and Anderson insulator phases, as well as coexistence and crossover regimes are identified. The Mott and Anderson insulators are found to be continuously connected.

Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition at non-integer filling

Correlated electrons in a binary alloy $A_{x}B_{1-x}$ are investigated within the Hubbard model and dynamical mean--field theory (DMFT). The random energies $ε_{i}$ have a bimodal probability distribution and an energy separation $Δ$. We solve the DMFT equations by the numerical renormalization group method at zero temperature, and calculate the spectral density as a function of disorder strength $Δ$ and interaction $U$ at different fillings. For filling factors $ν=x$ or $1+x$ the lower or upper alloy subband is half filled and the system becomes a Mott insulator at strong interactions, with a correlation gap at the Fermi level. At the metal--insulator transition hysteresis is observed. We also analyze the effective theory in the $Δ\to \infty $ limit and find good agreement between analytical and numerical results for the critical interaction $U_{c}$ at which the metal--insulator transition occurs.

Exact Insulating and Conducting Ground States of a Periodic Anderson Model in Three Dimensions

We present a class of exact ground states of a three-dimensional periodic Anderson model at 3/4 filling. Hopping and hybridization of d and f electrons extend over the unit cell of a general Bravais lattice. Employing novel composite operators combined with 55 matching conditions the Hamiltonian is cast into positive semidefinite form. A product wave function in position space allows one to identify stability regions of an insulating and a conducting ground state. The metallic phase is a non-Fermi liquid with one dispersing and one flat band.

Ferromagnetism and Metal-Insulator Transition in the Disordered Hubbard Model

A detailed study of the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in the one-band Hubbard model in the presence of binary alloy disorder is presented. The influence of the disorder (with concentration $x$ and $1-x$ of the two alloy ions) on the Curie temperature $T_{c}$ is found to depend strongly on electron density $n$. While at high densities, $n>x$, the disorder always reduces $T_c$, at low densities, $n<x$, the disorder can even \emph{enhance} $T_c$ if the interaction is strong enough. At the particular density $n=x$ (i. e. not necessarily at half filling) the interplay between disorder-induced band splitting and correlation induced Mott transition gives rise to a new type of metal-insulator transition.

Phenomenological Modeling of Photoemission Spectra in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

A phenomenological approach is presented that allows one to model, and thereby interpret, photoemission spectra of strongly correlated electron systems. A simple analytical formula for the self-energy is proposed. This self-energy describes both coherent and incoherent parts of the spectrum (quasiparticle and Hubbard peaks, respectively). Free parameters in the expression are determined by fitting the density of states to experimental photoemission data. An explicit fitting is presented for the La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ system with $0.08 \le x \le 0.38$. In general, our phenomenological approach provides information on the effective mass, the Hubbard interaction, and the spectral weight distribution in different parts of the spectrum. Limitations of this approach are also discussed.

Derivation of the Curie-Weiss Law in Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

We present an analytic derivation of the linear temperature dependence of the inverse static susceptibility $χ^{-1}(T,U)\sim T-T{_{c}}(U)$ near the transition from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic correlated metal within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for the Hubbard model. The equations for the critical temperature and interaction strength of the transition are also determined.

Exact analytic results for the Gutzwiller wave function with finite magnetization

We present analytic results for ground-state properties of Hubbard-type models in terms of the Gutzwiller variational wave function with non-zero values of the magnetization m. In dimension D=1 approximation-free evaluations are made possible by appropriate canonical transformations and an analysis of Umklapp processes. We calculate the double occupation and the momentum distribution, as well as its discontinuity at the Fermi surface, for arbitrary values of the interaction parameter g, density n, and magnetization m. These quantities determine the expectation value of the one-dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian for any symmetric, monotonically increasing dispersion epsilon_k. In particular for nearest-neighbor hopping and densities away from half filling the Gutzwiller wave function is found to predict ferromagnetic behavior for sufficiently large interaction U.

Disorder-enhanced delocalization and local-moment quenching in a disordered antiferromagnet

The interplay of disorder and spin-fluctuation effects in a disordered antiferromagnet is studied. In the weak-disorder regime (W \le U), while the energy gap decreases rapidly with disorder, the sublattice magnetization, including quantum corrections, is found to remain essentially unchanged in the strong correlation limit. Magnon energies and Neel temperature are enhanced by disorder in this limit. A single paradigm of disorder-enhanced delocalization qualitatively accounts for all these weak disorder effects. Vertex corrections and magnon damping, which appear only at order (W/U)^4, are also studied. With increasing disorder a crossover is found at W \sim U, characterized by a rapid decrease in sublattice magnetization due to quenching of local moments, and formation of spin vacancies. The latter suggests a spin-dilution behavior, which is indeed observed in softened magnon modes, lowering of Neel temperature, and enhanced transverse spin fluctuations.

Effects of Next-Nearest-Neighbor Hopping on the Hole Motion in an Antiferromagnetic Background

In this paper we study the effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping on the dynamics of a single hole in an antiferromagnetic (Néel) background. In the framework of large dimensions the Green function of a hole can be obtained exactly. The exact density of states of a hole is thus calculated in large dimensions and on a Bethe lattice with large coordination number. We suggest a physically motivated generalization to finite dimensions (e.g., 2 and 3). In $d=2$ we present also the momentum dependent spectral function. With varying degree, depending on the underlying lattice involved, the discrete spectrum for holes is replaced by a continuum background and a few resonances at the low energy end. The latter are the remanents of the bound states of the $t-J$ model. Their behavior is still largely governed by the parameters $t$ and $J$. The continuum excitations are more sensitive to the energy scales $t$ and $t_1$.
