Rotating black holes in the FI-gauged $N=2$, $D=4$ $\overline{\mathbb{C}\text{P}}^n$ model

We construct supersymmetric black holes with rotation or NUT charge for the $\overline{\mathbb{C}\text{P}}^n$- and the $\text{t}^3$ model of $N=2$, $D=4$ $\text{U}(1)$ FI-gauged supergravity. The solutions preserve 2 real supercharges, which are doubled for their near-horizon geometry. For the $\overline{\mathbb{C}\text{P}}^n$ model we also present a generalization to the nonextremal case, which turns out to be characterized by a Carter-Plebański-type metric, and has $n+3$ independent parameters, corresponding to mass, angular momentum as well as $n+1$ magnetic charges. We discuss the thermodynamics of these solutions, obtain a Christodoulou-Ruffini mass formula, and shew that they obey a first law of thermodynamics and that the product of horizon areas depends on the angular momentum and the magnetic charges only. At least some of the BPS black holes that we obtain may become instrumental for future microscopic entropy computations involving a supersymmetric index.

AdS$_5$ black strings in the stu model of FI-gauged $N=2$ supergravity

We analytically construct asymptotically AdS$_5$ black string solutions starting from the four-dimensional domain wall black hole of arXiv:0911.4926. It is shown that its uplift gives a black string in $d=5$ minimal gauged supergravity, with momentum along the string. Applying instead the residual symmetries of $N=2$, $d=4$ Fayet-Iliopoulos-gauged supergravity discovered in arXiv:1606.05160 to the domain wall seed leads, after uplifting, to a dyonic black string that interpolates between AdS$_5$ and $\text{AdS}_3\times\text{H}^2$ at the horizon. A Kaluza-Klein reduction of the latter along an angular Killing direction $ϕ$ followed by a duality transformation yields, after going back to five dimensions, a black string with both momentum along the string and rotation along $ϕ$. This is the first instance of using solution-generating techniques in gauged supergravity to add rotation to a given seed. These solutions all have constant scalar fields. As was shown in hep-th/0302218, the construction of supersymmetric static magnetic black strings in the FI-gauged stu model amounts to solving the $\text{SO}(2,1)$ spinning top equations, which descend from an inhomogeneous version of the Nahm equations. We are able to solve these in a particular case, which leads to a generalization of the Maldacena-Nuñez solution.

Spinorial geometry, off-shell Killing spinor identities and higher derivative 5D supergravities

Killing spinor identities relate components of equations of motion to each other for supersymmetric backgrounds. The only input required is the field content and the supersymmetry transformations of the fields, as long as an on-shell supersymmetrization of the action without additional fields exists. If we consider off-shell supersymmetry it is clear that the same relations will occur between components of the equations of motion independently of the specific action considered, in particular the Killing spinor identities can be derived for arbitrary, including higher derivative, supergravities, with a specified matter content. We give the Killing spinor identities for five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ ungauged supergravities coupled to Abelian vector multiplets, and then using spinorial geometry techniques so that we have explicit representatives for the spinors, we discuss the particular case of the time-like class of solutions to theories with perturbative corrections at the four derivative level. We also discuss the maximally supersymmetric solutions in the general off-shell case.

First order flow equations for nonextremal black holes in AdS (super)gravity

We consider electrically charged static nonextremal black holes in $d$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-(A)dS gravity, whose horizon is a generic Einstein space in $d-2$ dimensions. It is shown that for this system the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is exactly solvable and admits two branches of solutions. One of them exhibits a non-simply connected domain of integration constants and does not reduce to the well-known solution for the $d=4$ BPS case. The principal functions generate two first order flows that are analytically different, but support the same general solution. One of the two sets of flow equations corresponds to those found by Lü, Pope and Vázquez-Poritz in hep-th/0307001 and (for $d=4$ and $Λ=0$) by Miller, Schalm and Weinberg in hep-th/0612308. This clarifies also the reason for the very existence of first order equations for nonextremal black holes, namely, they are just the expressions for the conjugate momenta in terms of derivatives of the principal function in a Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. In the last part of our paper we analyze how much of these integrability properties generalizes to matter-coupled $N=2$, $d=4$ gauged supergravity.

Nonlinear symmetries of black hole entropy in gauged supergravity

Freudenthal duality in N=2, D=4 ungauged supergravity is generated by an anti-involutive operator that acts on the electromagnetic fluxes, and results to be a symmetry of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We show that, with a suitable extension, this duality can be generalized to the abelian gauged case as well, even in presence of hypermultiplets. By defining Freudenthal duality along the scalar flow, one can prove that two configurations of charges and gaugings linked by the Freudenthal operator share the same set of values of the scalar fields at the black hole horizon. Consequently, Freudenthal duality is promoted to a nonlinear symmetry of the black hole entropy. We explicitly show this invariance for the model with prepotential $F=-i X^0 X^1$ and Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging.

Black string first order flow in N=2, d=5 abelian gauged supergravity

We derive both BPS and non-BPS first-order flow equations for magnetically charged black strings in five-dimensional N=2 abelian gauged supergravity, using the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. This is first done for the coupling to vector multiplets only and U(1) Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) gauging, and then generalized to the case where also hypermultiplets are present, and abelian symmetries of the quaternionic hyperscalar target space are gauged. We then use these results to derive the attractor equations for near-horizon geometries of extremal black strings, and solve them explicitely for the case where the constants appearing in the Chern-Simons term of the supergravity action satisfy an adjoint identity. This allows to compute in generality the central charge of the two-dimensional conformal field theory that describes the black strings in the infrared, in terms of the magnetic charges, the CY intersection numbers and the FI constants. Finally, we extend the r-map to gauged supergravity and use it to relate our flow equations to those in four dimensions.

Symplectically invariant flow equations for N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity with hypermultiplets

We consider N=2 supergravity in four dimensions, coupled to an arbitrary number of vector- and hypermultiplets, where abelian isometries of the quaternionic hyperscalar target manifold are gauged. Using a static and spherically or hyperbolically symmetric ansatz for the fields, a one-dimensional effective action is derived whose variation yields all the equations of motion. By imposing a sort of Dirac charge quantization condition, one can express the complete scalar potential in terms of a superpotential and write the action as a sum of squares. This leads to first-order flow equations, that imply the second-order equations of motion. The first-order flow turns out to be driven by Hamilton's characteristic function in the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, and contains among other contributions the superpotential of the scalars. We then include also magnetic gaugings and generalize the flow equations to a symplectically covariant form. Moreover, by rotating the charges in an appropriate way, an alternative set of non-BPS first-order equations is obtained that corresponds to a different squaring of the action. Finally, we use our results to derive the attractor equations for near-horizon geometries of extremal black holes.

Duality invariance in Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity

We propose a geometric method to study the residual symmetries in $N=2$, $d=4$ $\text{U}(1)$ Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) gauged supergravity. It essentially involves the stabilization of the symplectic vector of gauge couplings (FI parameters) under the action of the U-duality symmetry of the ungauged theory. In particular we are interested in those transformations that act non-trivially on the solutions and produce scalar hair and dyonic black holes from a given seed. We illustrate the procedure for finding this group in general and then show how it works in some specific models. For the prepotential $F=-iX^0X^1$, we use our method to add one more parameter to the rotating Chow-Compère solution, representing scalar hair.

Black holes in an expanding universe and supersymmetry

This paper analyzes the supersymmetric solutions to five and six-dimensional minimal (un)gauged supergravities for which the bilinear Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor is null. We focus on the spacetimes which admit an additional ${\rm SO}(1,1)$ boost symmetry. Upon the toroidal dimensional reduction along the Killing vector corresponding to the boost, we show that the solution in the ungauged case describes a charged, nonextremal black hole in a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe with an expansion driven by a massless scalar field. For the gauged case, the solution corresponds to a charged, nonextremal black hole embedded conformally into a Kantowski-Sachs universe. It turns out that these dimensional reductions break supersymmetry since the bilinear Killing vector and the Killing vector corresponding to the boost fail to commute. This represents a new mechanism of supersymmetry breaking that has not been considered in the literature before.

Geometry of Killing spinors in neutral signature

We classify the supersymmetric solutions of minimal $N=2$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions with neutral signature. They are distinguished according to the sign of the cosmological constant and whether the vector field constructed as a bilinear of the Killing spinor is null or non-null. In neutral signature the bilinear vector field can be spacelike, which is a new feature not arising in Lorentzian signature. In the $Λ<0$ non-null case, the canonical form of the metric is described by a fibration over a three-dimensional base space that has $\text{U}(1)$ holonomy with torsion. We find that a generalized monopole equation determines the twist of the bilinear Killing field, which is reminiscent of an Einstein-Weyl structure. If, moreover, the electromagnetic field strength is self-dual, one gets the Kleinian signature analogue of the Przanowski-Tod class of metrics, namely a pseudo-hermitian spacetime determined by solutions of the continuous Toda equation, conformal to a scalar-flat pseudo-Kähler manifold, and admitting in addition a charged conformal Killing spinor. In the $Λ<0$ null case, the supersymmetric solutions define an integrable null Kähler structure. In the $Λ>0$ non-null case, the manifold is a fibration over a Lorentzian Gauduchon-Tod base space. Finally, in the $Λ>0$ null class, the metric is contained in the Kundt family, and it turns out that the holonomy is reduced to ${\rm Sim}(1)\times{\rm Sim}(1)$. There appear no self-dual solutions in the null class for either sign of the cosmological constant.

On the integrability of Einstein-Maxwell-(A)dS gravity in presence of Killing vectors

We study some symmetry and integrability properties of four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell gravity with nonvanishing cosmological constant in the presence of Killing vectors. First of all, we consider stationary spacetimes, which lead, after a timelike Kaluza-Klein reduction followed by a dualization of the two vector fields, to a three-dimensional nonlinear sigma model coupled to gravity, whose target space is a noncompact version of $\mathbb{C}\text{P}^2$ with SU(2,1) isometry group. It is shown that the potential for the scalars, that arises from the cosmological constant in four dimensions, breaks three of the eight SU(2,1) symmetries, corresponding to the generalized Ehlers and the two Harrison transformations. This leaves a semidirect product of a one-dimensional Heisenberg group and a translation group $\mathbb{R}^2$ as residual symmetry. We show that, under the additional assumptions that the three-dimensional manifold is conformal to a product space $\mathbb{R}\timesΣ$, and all fields depend only on the coordinate along $\mathbb{R}$, the equations of motion are integrable. This generalizes the results of Leigh et al. in arXiv:1403.6511 to the case where also electromagnetic fields are present. In the second part of the paper we consider the purely gravitational spacetime admitting a second Killing vector that commutes with the timelike one. We write down the resulting two-dimensional action and discuss its symmetries. If the fields depend only on one of the two coordinates, the equations of motion are again integrable, and the solution turns out to be one constructed by Krasinski many years ago.

BPS black holes in a non-homogeneous deformation of the stu model of $N=2$, $D=4$ gauged supergravity

We consider a deformation of the well-known stu model of $N=2$, $D=4$ supergravity, characterized by a non-homogeneous special Kähler manifold, and by the smallest electric-magnetic duality Lie algebra consistent with its upliftability to five dimensions. We explicitly solve the BPS attractor equations and construct static supersymmetric black holes with radial symmetry, in the context of $\text{U}(1)$ dyonic Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging, focussing on axion-free solutions. Due to non-homogeneity of the scalar manifold, the model evades the analysis recently given in the literature. The relevant physical properties of the resulting black hole solution are discussed.

Hairy black holes in N=2 gauged supergravity

We construct black holes with scalar hair in a wide class of four-dimensional N=2 Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity theories that are characterized by a prepotential containing one free parameter. Considering the truncated model in which only a single real scalar survives, the theory is reduced to an Einstein-scalar system with a potential, which admits at most two AdS critical points and is expressed in terms of a real superpotential. Our solution is static, admits maximally symmetric horizons, asymptotically tends to AdS space corresponding to an extremum of the superpotential, but is disconnected from the Schwarzschild-AdS family. The condition under which the spacetime admits an event horizon is addressed for each horizon topology. It turns out that for hyperbolic horizons the black holes can be extremal. In this case, the near-horizon geometry is AdS_2 x H^2, where the scalar goes to the other, non-supersymmetric, critical point of the potential. Our solution displays fall-off behaviours different from the standard one, due to the fact that the mass parameter $m^2=-2/\ell^2$ at the supersymmetric vacuum lies in a characteristic range $m^2_{BF}\le m^2\le m^2_{\rm BF}+\ell^{-2}$ for which the slowly decaying scalar field is also normalizable. Nevertheless, we identify a well-defined mass for our spacetime, following the prescription of Hertog and Maeda. Quite remarkably, the product of all horizon areas is not given in terms of the asymptotic cosmological constant alone, as one would expect in absence of electromagnetic charges and angular momentum. Our solution shows qualitatively the same thermodynamic behaviour as the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, but the entropy is always smaller for a given mass and AdS curvature radius. We also find that our spherical black holes are unstable against radial perturbations.

Supersymmetric black holes and attractors in gauged supergravity with hypermultiplets

We consider four-dimensional $N=2$ supergravity coupled to vector- and hypermultiplets, where abelian isometries of the quaternionic Kähler hypermultiplet scalar manifold are gauged. Using the recipe given by Meessen and Ort\'ın in arXiv:1204.0493, we analytically construct a supersymmetric black hole solution for the case of just one vector multiplet with prepotential ${\cal F}=-iχ^0χ^1$, and the universal hypermultiplet. This solution has a running dilaton, and it interpolates between $\text{AdS}_2\times\text{H}^2$ at the horizon and a hyperscaling-violating type geometry at infinity, conformal to $\text{AdS}_2\times\text{H}^2$. It carries two magnetic charges that are completely fixed in terms of the parameters that appear in the Killing vector used for the gauging. In the second part of the paper, we extend the work of Bellucci et al. on black hole attractors in gauged supergravity to the case where also hypermultiplets are present. The attractors are shown to be governed by an effective potential $V_{\text{eff}}$, which is extremized on the horizon by all the scalar fields of the theory. Moreover, the entropy is given by the critical value of $V_{\text{eff}}$. In the limit of vanishing scalar potential, $V_{\text{eff}}$ reduces (up to a prefactor) to the usual black hole potential.

Fluid dynamics on ultrastatic spacetimes and dual black holes

We show that the classification of shearless and incompressible stationary fluid flows on ultrastatic manifolds is equivalent to classifying the isometries of the spatial sections. For a flow on R x S$^2$ this leaves only one possibility, since on the 2-sphere all Killing fields are conjugate to each other, and it is well-known that the gravity dual of such a (conformal) fluid is the spherical KNAdS$_4$ black hole. On the other hand, in R x H$^2$ the situation is more complicated, since the isometry group of H$^2$ admits elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic elements. One might thus ask what the gravity duals of the flows corresponding to these three different cases are. Answering this question is one of the scopes of this paper. In particular we identify the black hole dual to a fluid that is purely translating on the hyperbolic plane. Although this lies within the Carter-Plebanski (CP) class, it has never been studied in the literature before, and represents thus in principle a new black hole solution in AdS$_4$. For a rigidly rotating fluid in R x H$^2$ (holographically dual to the hyperbolic KNAdS$_4$ solution), there is a certain radius where the velocity reaches the speed of light, and thus the fluid can cover only the region within this radius. Quite remarkably, it turns out that the boundary of the hyperbolic KNAdS$_4$ black hole is conformal to exactly that part of R x H$^2$ in which the fluid velocity does not exceed the speed of light. We extend these results to establish a precise mapping between possible flows on ultrastatic spacetimes (with constant curvature spatial sections) and the parameter space of the CP solution. Finally, we show that the alternative description of the hyperbolic KNAdS$_4$ black hole in terms of fluid mechanics on R x S$^2$ or on flat space is dynamical and consists of a contracting or expanding vortex.

Rotating black holes in an expanding universe from fake supergravity

Using the recipe of arXiv:0902.4814, where all fake supersymmetric backgrounds of matter-coupled fake N=2, d=4 gauged supergravity were classified, we construct dynamical rotating black holes in an expanding FLRW universe. This is done for two different prepotentials that are both truncations of the stu model and correspond to just one vector multiplet. In this scenario, the cosmic expansion is driven by two U(1) gauge fields and by a complex scalar that rolls down its potential. Generically, the solutions of arXiv:0902.4814 are fibrations over a Gauduchon-Tod base space, and we make three different choices for this base, namely flat space, the three-sphere and the Berger sphere. In the first two cases, the black holes are determined by harmonic functions on the base, while in the last case they obey a deformed Laplace equation that contains the squashing parameter of the Berger sphere. This is the generalization to a cosmological context of the usual recipe in ungauged supergravity, where black holes are given in terms of harmonic functions on three-dimensional Euclidean space. The constructed solutions may be instrumental in addressing analytically questions like black hole collisions and violation of cosmic censorship.

Four-dimensional black holes with unusual horizons

We show that in presence of a cosmological constant or, more generally, of a scalar potential, there can exist actually more possibilities for the horizon geometry of a four-dimensional black hole than the hitherto known spherical, hyperbolic or flat cases. In particular, there are black holes whose event horizons are noncompact manifolds with finite volume, which are topologically spheres with two punctures. We give concrete examples of such black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-AdS gravity and discuss their thermodynamics. These exotic solutions, that seem to have been overlooked in the existing literature, may provide interesting testgrounds to address questions related to black hole physics or holography.

Multi-centered black holes with a negative cosmological constant

We present a recipe that allows to construct multi-centered black holes embedded in an arbitrary FLRW universe. These solutions are completely determined by a function satisfying the conformal Laplace equation on the spatial slices $\text{E}^3$, $\text{S}^3$ or $\text{H}^3$. Since anti-de Sitter space can be written in FLRW coordinates, this includes as a special case multi-centered black holes in AdS, in the sense that, far away from the black holes, the energy density and the pressure approach the values given by a negative cosmological constant. We study in some detail the physical properties of the single-centered asymptotically AdS case, which does not coincide with the usual Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, but is highly dynamical. In particular, we determine the curvature singularities and trapping horizons of this solution, compute the surface gravity of the trapping horizons, and show that the generalized first law of black hole dynamics proposed by Hayward holds in this case. It turns out that the spurious big bang/big crunch singularities that appear when one writes AdS in FLRW form, become real in presence of these dynamical black holes. This implies that actually only one point of the usual conformal boundary of AdS survives in the solutions that we construct. Finally, a generalization to arbitary dimension is also presented.
