Decompositions of algebras and post-associative algebra structures

We introduce post-associative algebra structures and study their relationship to post-Lie algebra structures, Rota--Baxter operators and decompositions of associative algebras and Lie algebras. We show several results on the existence of such structures. In particular we prove that there exists no post-Lie algebra structure on a pair $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$, where $\mathfrak{n}$ is a simple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak{g}$ is a reductive Lie algebra, which is not isomorphic to $\mathfrak{n}$. We also show that there is no post-associative algebra structure on a pair $(A,B)$ arising from a Rota--Baxter operator of $B$, where $A$ is a semisimple associative algebra and $B$ is not semisimple. The proofs use results on Rota--Baxter operators and decompositions of algebras.

Almost inner derivations of Lie algebras II

We continue the algebraic study of almost inner derivations of Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero and determine these derivations for free nilpotent Lie algebras, for almost abelian Lie algebras, for Lie algebras whose solvable radical is abelian and for several classes of filiform nilpotent Lie algebras. We find a family of $n$-dimensional characteristically nilpotent filiform Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_n$, for all $n\ge 13$, all of whose derivations are almost inner. Finally we compare the almost inner derivations of Lie algebras considered over two different fields $K\supseteq k$ for a finite-dimensional field extension.

Etale representations for reductive algebraic groups with factors $Sp_n$ or $SO_n$

A complex vector space $V$ is an étale $G$-module if $G$ acts rationally on $V$ with a Zariski-open orbit and $\dim G=\dim V$. Such a module is called super-étale if the stabilizer of a point in the open orbit is trivial. Popov proved that reductive algebraic groups admitting super-étale modules are special algebraic groups. He further conjectured that a reductive group admitting a super-étale module is always isomorphic to a product of general linear groups. In light of previously available examples, one can conjecture more generally that in such a group all simple factors are either $SL_n$ for some $n$ or $Sp_2$. We show that this is not the case by constructing a family of super-étale modules for groups with a factor $Sp_n$ for arbitrary $n\geq1$. A similar construction provides a family of étale modules for groups with a factor $SO_n$, which shows that groups with étale modules with non-trivial stabilizer are not necessarily special. Both families of examples are somewhat surprising in light of the previously known examples of étale and super-étale modules for reductive groups. Finally, we show that the exceptional groups $F_4$ and $E_8$ cannot appear as simple factors in the maximal semisimple subgroup of an arbitrary Lie group with a linear étale representation.

Post-Lie algebra structures for nilpotent Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$ for nilpotent Lie algebras. First we show that if $\mathfrak{g}$ is nilpotent such that $H^0(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})=0$, then also $\mathfrak{n}$ must be nilpotent, of bounded class. For post-Lie algebra structures $x\cdot y$ on pairs of $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$ we give necessary and sufficient conditions such that $x\circ y=\frac{1}{2}(x\cdot y+y\cdot x)$ defines a CPA-structure on $\mathfrak{g}$, or on $\mathfrak{n}$. As a corollary we obtain that every LR-structure on a Heisenberg Lie algebra of dimension $n\ge 5$ is complete. Finally we classify all post-Lie algebra structures on $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$ for $\mathfrak{g}\cong \mathfrak{n}\cong \mathfrak{n}_3$, where $\mathfrak{n}_3$ is the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra.

Etale representations for reductive algebraic groups with one-dimensional center

A complex vector space $V$ is a prehomogeneous $G$-module if $G$ acts rationally on $V$ with a Zariski-open orbit. The module is called etale if $\dim V=\dim G$. We study etale modules for reductive algebraic groups $G$ with one-dimensional center. For such $G$, even though every etale module is a regular prehomogeneous module, its irreducible submodules have to be non-regular. For these non-regular prehomogeneous modules, we determine some strong constraints on the ranks of their simple factors. This allows us to show that there do not exist etale modules for $G=\mathrm{GL}_1\times S\times\cdots\times S$, with $S$ simple.

Almost inner derivations of Lie algebras

We study almost inner derivations of Lie algebras, which were introduced by Gordon and Wilson in their work on isospectral deformations of compact solvmanifolds. We compute all almost inner derivations for low-dimensional Lie algebras, and introduce the concept of fixed basis vectors for proving that all almost inner derivations are inner for $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras determined by graphs, free $2$ and $3$-step nilpotent Lie algebras, free metabelian nilpotent Lie algebras on two generators, almost abelian Lie algebras and triangular Lie algebras. On the other hand we also exhibit families of nilpotent Lie algebras having an arbitrary large space of non-inner almost inner derivations.

Post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$, motivated by nil-affine actions of Lie groups. We prove existence results for such structures depending on the interplay of the algebraic structures of $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$. We consider the classes of simple, semisimple, reductive, perfect, solvable, nilpotent, abelian and unimodular Lie algebras. Furthermore we consider commutative post-Lie algebra structures on perfect Lie algebras. Using Lie algebra cohomology we prove that such structures are trivial in several cases. We classify commutative structures on low-dimensional Lie algebras, and study the case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Commutative post-Lie algebra structures on Lie algebras

We show that any CPA-structure (commutative post-Lie algebra structure) on a perfect Lie algebra is trivial. Furthermore we give a general decomposition of inner CPA-structures, and classify all CPA-structures on parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras.

Derivation double Lie algebras

We study classical R-matrices D for Lie algebras L such that D is also a derivation of L. This yields derivation double Lie algebras (L,D). The motivation comes from recent work on post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras arising in the study of nil-affine actions of Lie groups. We prove that there are no nontrivial simple derivation double Lie algebras, and study related Lie algebra identities for arbitrary Lie algebras.

Jacobi-Jordan algebras

We study finite-dimensional commutative algebras, which satisfy the Jacobi identity. Such algebras are Jordan algebras. We describe some of their properties and give a classification in dimensions $n<7$ over algebraically closed fields of characteristic not $2$ or $3$.

Derived length and nildecomposable Lie algebras

We study the minimal dimension of solvable and nilpotent Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero with given derived length $k$. This is motivated by questions on nildecomposable Lie algebras $\Lg=\La+\Lb$, arising in the context of post-Lie algebra structures. The question is, how the derived length of $\Lg$ can be estimated in terms of the derived length and nilpotency classes of the two nilpotent subalgebras $\La$ and $\Lb$.

Abelian ideals of maximal dimension for solvable Lie algebras

We compare the maximal dimension of abelian subalgebras and the maximal dimension of abelian ideals for finite-dimensional Lie algebras. We show that these dimensions coincide for solvable Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We compute this invariant for all complex nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension n less than 8. Furthermore we study the case where there exists an abelian subalgebra of codimension 2. Here we explicitly construct an abelian ideal of codimension 2 in case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Affine actions on Lie groups and post-Lie algebra structures

We introduce post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\Lg,\Ln)$ defined on a fixed vector space $V$. Special cases are LR-structures and pre-Lie algebra structures on Lie algebras. We show that post-Lie algebra structures naturally arise in the study of NIL-affine actions on nilpotent Lie groups. We obtain several results on the existence of post-Lie algebra structures, in terms of the algebraic structure of the two Lie algebras $\Lg$ and $\Ln$. One result is, for example, that if there exists a post-Lie algebra structure on $(\Lg,\Ln)$, where $\Lg$ is nilpotent, then $\Ln$ must be solvable. Furthermore special cases and examples are given. This includes a classification of all complex, two-dimensional post-Lie algebras.

Post-Lie algebra structures and generalized derivations of semisimple Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras (g,n), and prove existence results for the case that one of the Lie algebras is semisimple. For semisimple g and solvable n we show that there exist no post-Lie algebra structures on (g,n). For semisimple n and certain solvable g we construct canonical post-Lie algebra structures. On the other hand we prove that there are no post-Lie algebra structures for semisimple n and solvable, unimodular g. We also determine the generalized $(\al,\be,\ga)$-derivations of n in the semisimple case. As an application we classify post-Lie algebra structures induced by generalized derivations.

Classification of Novikov algebras

We describe a method for classifying the Novikov algebras with a given associated Lie algebra. Subsequently we give the classification of the Novikov algebras of dimension 3 over R and C, as well as the classification of the 4-dimensional Novikov algebras over C whose associated Lie algebra is nilpotent. In particular this includes a list of all 4-dimensional commutative associative algebras over C.

Faithful Lie algebra modules and quotients of the universal enveloping algebra

We describe a new method to determine faithful representations of small dimension for a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra. We give various applications of this method. In particular we find a new upper bound on the minimal dimension of a faithful module for the Lie algebras being counter examples to a well known conjecture of J. Milnor.
