Stochastic Penna model for biological aging

A stochastic genetic model for biological aging is introduced bridging the gap between the bit-string Penna model and the Pletcher-Neuhauser approach. The phenomenon of exponentially increasing mortality function at intermediate ages and its deceleration at advanced ages is reproduced for both the evolutionary steady-state population and the genetically homogeneous individuals.

Social Percolation on Inhomogeneous Spanning Network

The Social Percolation model recently proposed by Solomon et al. is studied on the Ising correlated inhomogeneous network. The dynamics in this is studied so as to understand the role of correlations in the social structure. Thus the possible role of the structural social connectivity is examined.

Cross-linking of micelles by gemini surfactants

We investigate the effects of gemini surfactants, telechelic chain and lipids on the nature of micelles formed by conventional single-tail surfactants in water by carrying out Monte Carlo simulations. In a mixture of gemini and single-tail surfactants in water we find direct evidence of micelles of predominantly single-tail surfactants some of which are dynamically cross-linked by gemini surfactants when the concentrations of the geminis is only a few mole percent and their spacers are {\it hydrophilic}. In contrast, mixtures of lipids and single-tail surfactants in water form only isolated micelles, each consisting of a mixture of both species, without cross-links.

Re-examination of seven-dimensional site percolation thresholds

Monte Carlo simulations alone could not clarify the corrections to scaling for the size-dependent p_c(L) above the upper critical dimension. Including the previous series estimate for the bulk threshold $p_c(\infty)$ gives preference for the complicated corrections predicted by renormalization group and against the simple 1/L extrapolation. Additional Monte-Carlo simulations using the Leath method corroborate the series result for p_c.

Periodicity-dependent stiffness of periodic hydrophilic-hydrophobic hetero-polymers

From extensive Monte Carlo simulations of a Larson model of perfectly periodic heteropolymers (PHP) in water a striking stiffening is observed as the period of the alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks is shortened. At short period and low temperature needle-like conformations are the stable conformation. As temperature is increased thermal fluctuations induce kinks and bends. At large periods compact oligomeric globules are observed. From the generalized Larson prescription, originally developed for modelling surfactant molecules in aqueous solutions, we find that the shorter is the period the more stretched is the PHP. This novel effect is expected to stimulate polymer synthesis and trigger research on the rheology of aqueous periodic heteropolymer solutions.

Self-Organized Percolation Model for Stock Market Fluctuations

In the Cont-Bouchaud model [cond-mat/9712318] of stock markets, percolation clusters act as buying or selling investors and their statistics controls that of the price variations. Rather than fixing the concentration controlling each cluster connectivity artificially at or close to the critical value, we propose that clusters shatter and aggregate continuously as the concentration evolves randomly, reflecting the incessant time evolution of groups of opinions and market moods. By the mechanism of ``sweeping of an instability'' [D. Sornette, Journal de Physique I 4, 209 (1994)], this market model spontaneously exhibits reasonable power law statistics for the distribution of price changes and accounts for the other important stylized facts of stock market price fluctuations.

A generalized spin model of financial markets

We reformulate the Cont-Bouchaud model of financial markets in terms of classical "super-spins" where the spin value is a measure of the number of individual traders represented by a portfolio manager of an investment agency. We then extend this simplified model by switching on interactions among the super-spins to model the tendency of agencies getting influenced by the opinion of other managers. We also introduce a fictitious temperature (to model other random influences), and time-dependent local fields to model slowly changing optimistic or pessimistic bias of traders. We point out close similarities between the price variations in our model with $N$ super-spins and total displacements in an $N$-step Levy flight. We demonstrate the phenomena of natural and artificially created bubbles and subsequent crashes as well as the occurrence of "fat tails" in the distributions of stock price variations.

Effects of boundary conditions on the critical spanning probability

The fractions of samples spanning a lattice at its percolation threshold are found by computer simulation of random site-percolation in two- and three-dimensional hypercubic lattices using different boundary conditions. As a byproduct we find $p_c = 0.311605(5)$ in the cubic lattice.

Nucleation and hysteresis in Ising model: Classical theory versus computer simulation

We have studied the nucleation in the nearest neighbour ferromagnetic Ising model, in different (d) dimensions, by extensive Monte Carlo simulation using the heat-bath dynamics. The nucleation time (tau) has been studied as a function of the magnetic field (h) for various system sizes in different dimensions (d=2,3,4). The logarithm of the nucleation time is found to be proportional to the power (-(d-1)) of the magnetic field (h) in d dimensions. The size dependent crossover from coalescence to nucleation regime is observed in all dimensions. The distribution of metastable lifetimes are studied in both regions. The numerical results are compared and found to be consistent with the classical theoretical predictions. In two dimensions, we have also studied the dynamical response to a sinusoidally oscillating magnetic field. The reversal time is studied as a function of the inverse of the coercive field. The applicability of the classical nucleation theory to study the hysteresis and coercivity has been discussed.

Drift and trapping in biased diffusion on disordered lattices

We reexamine the theory of transition from drift to no-drift in biased diffusion on percolation networks. We argue that for the bias field B equal to the critical value B_c, the average velocity at large times t decreases to zero as 1/log(t). For B < B_c, the time required to reach the steady-state velocity diverges as exp(const/|B_c-B|). We propose an extrapolation form that describes the behavior of average velocity as a function of time at intermediate time scales. This form is found to have a very good agreement with the results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations on a 3-dimensional site-percolation network and moderate bias.

Damage Spreading in a 2D Ising Model with Swendsen-Wang Dynamics

Damage spreading for 2D Ising cluster dynamics is investigated numerically by using random numbers in a way that conforms with the notion of submitting the two evolving replicas to the same thermal noise. Two damage spreading transitions are found; damage does not spread either at low or high temperatures. We determine the critical exponents at the high-temperature transition point, which seem consistent with directed percolation.

Log-periodic Oscillations for Biased Diffusion in 3D Random Lattices

Random walks with a fixed bias direction on randomly diluted cubic lattices far above the percolation threshold exhibit log-periodic oscillations in the effective exponent versus time. A scaling argument accounts for the numerical results in the limit of large biases and small dilution and shows the importance of the interplay of these two ingredients in the generation of the log-periodicity. These results show that log-periodicity is the dominant effect compared to previous predictions of and reports on anomalous diffusion.

Mutation Accumulation and the Catastrophic Senescence of Pacific Salmon

The bit-string model of biological aging is used to simulate the catastrophic senescence of Pacific Salmon. We have shown that reproduction occuring only once and at a fixed age is the only ingredient needed to explain the catastrophic senescence according the mutation accumulation theory. Several results are presented, some of them with up to $10^8$ fishes, showing how the survival rates in catastrophic senescence are affected by changes in the parameters of the model.

Nonlinear Bias and the Convective Fisher Equation

We combine random walks, growth and decay, and convection, in a Monte Carlo simulation to model 1D interface dynamics with fluctuations. The continuum limit corresponds to the deterministic Fisher equation with convection. We find qualitatively the same type of asymmetry, as well as velocity difference, for interface profiles moving in opposite directions. However a transition apparent in the mean-field (continuum) limit is not found in the Monte Carlo simulation.
