A Global Spacetime Optimization Approach to the Real-Space Time-Dependent Schr\"odinger Equation

The time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation (TDSE) in real space is fundamental to understanding the dynamics of many-electron quantum systems, with applications ranging from quantum chemistry to condensed matter physics and materials science. However, solving the TDSE for complex fermionic systems remains a significant challenge, particularly due to the need to capture the time-evolving many-body correlations, while the antisymmetric nature of fermionic wavefunctions complicates the function space in which these solutions must be represented. We propose a general-purpose neural network framework for solving the real-space TDSE, Fermionic Antisymmetric Spatio-Temporal Network, which treats time as an explicit input alongside spatial coordinates, enabling a unified spatiotemporal representation of complex, antisymmetric wavefunctions for fermionic systems. This approach formulates the TDSE as a global optimization problem, avoiding step-by-step propagation and supporting highly parallelizable training. The method is demonstrated on five benchmark problems, achieving excellent agreement with reference solutions across all cases. These results demonstrate the method's accuracy and flexibility within the bound-state manifold across various dimensions and interaction regimes. While the current localized Ansatz inherently restricts the description of extensive ionization and continuum states, the method demonstrates the capability to stably simulate coherent multi-electron dynamics over extended time windows. Our framework offers a highly expressive alternative to traditional basis-dependent or mean-field methods, opening new possibilities for ab initio simulations of time-dependent quantum systems, with applications in quantum dynamics, molecular control, and ultrafast spectroscopy.

Multiphoton fusion of light nuclei in intense laser fields

We investigate the fusion cross sections of light nuclei in the presence of linearly polarized intense laser fields. By combining the Coulomb-Volkov solutions with the complex spherical square-well nuclear potential, we derive an explicit formulation of the multiphoton cross section in a self-consistent manner. Our analysis is specifically focused on deuteron-triton (DT) and proton-boron (p$^{11}{\rm B}$) fusion reactions, both of which have garnered widespread attention. The theoretical results reveal that, under conditions of longer laser wavelengths and lower incident particle kinetic energies, a few thousands of photons can participate in the fusion reactions, resulting in a substantial enhancement of fusion cross sections by almost ten orders of magnitude. We elucidate the multiphoton mechanism underlying these findings and discuss their implications.

Few-photon single ionization of cold rubidium in the over-the-barrier regime

Photoionization of the rubidium (Rb) atoms cooled in a magneto-optical trap, characterized by the coexistence of the ground 5$S_{1/2}$ and the excited 5$P_{3/2}$ states, is investigated experimentally and theoretically with the 400 nm femtosecond laser pulses at intensities of $I=3\times10^9$ W/cm$^2$ - $4.5\times10^{12}$ W/cm$^2$. Recoil-ion momentum distribution (RIMD) of Rb$^+$ exhibits rich ring-like structures and their energies correspond to one-photon ionization of the 5$P_{3/2}$ state, two-photon and three-photon ionizations of the 5$S_{1/2}$ state, respectively. With the increasing of $I$, we find that experimental signals near zero-momentum (NZM) in RIMDs resulted from the 5$P_{3/2}$ state enhance dramatically and its peaked Rb$^+$ momenta dwindle obviously while that from the 5$S_{1/2}$ state is maintained. Meanwhile, the ion-yield ratio of the 5$S_{1/2}$ over the 5$P_{3/2}$ states varies from $I$ to $I^{1.5}$ as $I$ increases. These features indicate a transition from perturbative ionization to strong-perturbative ionization for the 5$P_{3/2}$ state. Numerical simulations by solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation (TDSE) can qualitatively explain the measurements of RIMD, photoion angular distributions, as well as ion-yield ratio. However, some discrepancies still exist, especially for the NZM dip, which could stem from the electron-electron correlation that is neglected in the present TDSE simulations since we have adopted the single-active-electron approximation.

Electron Beam Weibel Instability in the Collisionless Shock with Low Mach Number

The electron beam Weibel instability in the electrostatic collisionless shock is studied via particle in cell simulation. When the non-relativistic incoming plasmas collide with cold dilute plasmas, an electrostatic shock forms near the interface. Following that, a filamentary out-of-plane magnetic field is formed as a result of the Weibel instability. It is demonstrated that the anisotropy of incoming hot electrons is insufficient to trigger the Weibel instability. And the Weibel instability is excited by cold electrons in dilute plasmas. After being accelerated to relativistic velocities by the shock electric field into the dense plasmas, electrons in the dilute plasma have considerable anisotropy and can trigger the Weibel instability

Study of similarity rules for electromagnetic process in partially ionized plasmas

As proved by previous study, the similarity of electromagnetic processes in plasmas will be violated by Coulomb collisions between electron and ions. Therefore, there is no similarity in highly ionized collisional plasma. But the situation will be completely different for collisional plasmas with low ionization degree. The main collision type will change from electron-ion Coulomb collision to electron-molecule collision, and a new variable (the number density of neutral molecules) will be introduced into the similarity constraint, which can increase the degree of freedom. Thus, in this condition, the similarity restriction caused by the collision process does not conflict with the other restrictions. Therefore, the similarity for electromagnetic process in collisional plasmas can be valid for partially ionized plasmas. In this paper, we propose the similarity in partially ionized plasmas, and prove it via particle in cell/Monte Carlo (PIC/MCC) simulation. Our research has a wide range of engineering applications.

Deuterium-tritium fusion process in strong laser fields: Semiclassical simulation

In this paper, we investigate the deuterium-tritium (DT) fusion process in the presence of strong laser fields with a semiclassical (SC) method. In this model, two nuclei with a given incident kinetic energy that closely approach each other are simulated by tracing the classical Newtonian trajectories in the combined Coulomb repulsive potentials and laser fields. At the nearest position or classical turning point, quantum tunneling through the Coulomb barrier emerges, and its penetrability is estimated with the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin formula. Nuclear fusion occurs after the tunneling, and the total fusion cross section takes the Gamow form. We find that the tunneling penetrability can be enhanced dramatically because the nuclei can closely approach each other due to the quiver motion of the charged nuclei driven by the intense laser fields. We then calculate the DT fusion section for a wide range of laser parameters according to various incident nuclei kinetic energies and obtain the phase diagrams for the enhanced DT fusion. We compare our SC results with the quantum results of the Kramers-Henneberger approximation and the Volkov state approximation.

Ellipticity-dependent sequential over-barrier ionization of cold rubidium

We perform high-resolution measurements of momentum distribution on Rb$^{n+}$ recoil ions up to charge state $n=4$, where laser-cooled rubidium atoms are ionized by femtosecond elliptically polarized lasers with the pulse duration of 35 fs and the intensity of 3.3$\times$10$^{15}$ W/cm$^2$ in the over-barrier ionization (OBI) regime. The momentum distributions of the recoil ions are found to exhibit multi-band structures as the ellipticity varies from the linear to circular polarizations. The origin of these band structures can be explained quantitatively by the classical OBI model and dedicated classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations with Heisenberg potential. Specifically, with back analysis of the classical trajectories, we reveal the ionization time and the OBI geometry of the sequentially released electrons, disentangling the mechanisms behind the tilted angle of the band structures. These results indicate that the classical treatment can describe the strong-field multiple ionization processes of alkali atoms.

Momentum spectroscopy for multiple ionization of cold rubidium in the elliptically polarized laser field

Employing recent developed magneto-optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (MOTRIMS) combining cold atom, strong laser pulse, and ultrafast technologies, we study momentum distributions of the multiply ionized cold rubidium (Rb) induced by the elliptically polarized laser pulses (35 fs, $1.3 \times 10^{15}$ W/cm$^2$). The complete vector momenta of Rbn+ ions up to charge state n = 4 are recorded with extremely high resolution (0.12 a.u. for Rb$^+$). Variations of characteristic multi-bands displayed in momentum distributions, as the ellipticity varies from the linear to circular polarization, are interpreted qualitatively with the classical over-barrier ionization model. Present momentum spectroscopy of cold heavy alkali atoms presents novel strong-field phenomena beyond the noble gases.
