Supercritical mean--field limit for magnetized Hamiltonian dynamic

The magnetized Vlasov--Poisson equation is a fundamental kinetic model for collisionless plasmas. We establish its quasi-neutral limit in two dimensions in the presence of a spatially inhomogeneous and time-dependent external magnetic field. In the same setting, we also establish the combined mean-field and quasi-neutral limit of the associated repulsive Coulomb particle system, thereby extending the results of \cite{han2021newton}. Both limits lead to the incompressible Euler equations with Lorentz forcing. A key structural feature is the pointwise skew-symmetry of the Lorentz operator, which produces exact cancellations in the modulated-energy estimates and is crucial for controlling the limiting dynamics. We further derive a closed vorticity formulation in which the sum of the fluid vorticity and the magnetic field is transported by the flow, coupled to an evolution equation for the spatial mean velocity. Finally, we establish global well-posedness of the resulting limiting system in the Lipschitz class.

Nonlinear Stability and Instability of Finite-Energy Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Riesz Equations with General Pressure Laws

The compressible Euler-Riesz equations arise in the modeling of a wide range of physical phenomena, including stellar dynamics, plasma physics, and mathematical biology. In this paper, we investigate the nonlinear stability and instability of steady states for the multidimensional compressible Euler-Riesz equations under general pressure laws. In the polytropic case, we establish the nonlinear instability of steady states in the mass-supercritical regime for attractive potentials; this is achieved by analyzing the concavity of the free energy along mass-preserving dilations. At the mass-critical exponent, we show that, for any steady state, there exist solutions that start arbitrarily close to it, but develop growing support. For general pressure laws, we employ a concentration-compactness approach to prove the existence of energy minimizers and establish the nonlinear stability of steady states. Moreover, we quantify the finite-time stability by deriving a relative entropy bound for finite-energy solutions, without requiring uniform pointwise upper and lower bounds on the density. We further exploit the convexity of the second moment to obtain quantitative growth estimates for solutions with positive energy, thereby proving the local nature of the stability result. Finally, we prove the global existence of finite-energy weak solutions to the compressible Euler-Riesz equations with spherical symmetry for general pressure laws via the compensated compactness method, thereby yielding unconditional stability around steady states within the class of weak solutions. The approach developed in this paper should be useful for solving other nonlinear partial differential equations involving similar difficulties.

Nonlinear stability of compressible vortex sheets in three-dimensional elastodynamics

We investigate the nonlinear stability of compressible vortex sheet solutions for three-dimensional (3D) isentropic elastic flows. Building upon previous results on the weakly linear stability of elastic vortex sheets [19], we perform a detailed study of the roots of the Lopatinskii determinant and identify a geometric stability condition associated with the deformation gradient. We employ an upper triangularization technique that isolates the outgoing modes into a closed system, where they appear only at the leading order. This enables us to derive energy estimates despite derivative loss. The major novelty of our approach includes the following two key aspects: (1) For the 3D compressible Euler vortex sheets, the front symbol exhibits degenerate ellipticity in certain frequency directions, which makes it challenging to ensure the front's regularity using standard energy estimates. Our analysis reveals that the non-parallel structure of the deformation gradient tensor plays a crucial role in recovering ellipticity in the front symbol, thereby enhancing the regularity of the free interface. (2) Another significant challenge in 3D arises from the strong degeneracy caused by the collision of repeated roots and poles. Unlike in 2D, where such interactions are absent, we encounter a co-dimension one set in frequency space where a double root coincides with a double pole. To resolve this, we refine Coulombel's diagonalization framework [21] and construct a suitable transformation that reduces the degeneracy order of the Lopatinskii matrix, enabling the use of localized Garding-type estimates to control the characteristic components. Finally, we employ a Nash-Moser iteration scheme to establish the local existence and nonlinear stability of vortex sheets under small initial perturbations, showing stability within a subsonic regime.

Quantum Quasi-neutral Limits and Isothermal Euler Equations

We provide a rigorous justification of the semiclassical quasi-neutral and the quantum many-body limits to the isothermal Euler equations. We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson-Boltzmann system under a quasi-neutral scaling and establish the convergence of its solutions to the isothermal Euler equations. Different from the previous results that dealt with the linear Poisson equations, the system under our consideration accounts for the exponential nonlinearity in the potential. A modulated energy method is adopted, allowing us to derive the stability estimates and asymptotics. Furthermore, we focus our analysis on the many-body quantum problem via the von Neumann equation and establish a mean-field limit in one dimension by using Serfaty's functional inequalities, and thus connecting the quantum many-body dynamics with the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations. A refined analysis of the quasi-neutral scaling for the massless systems is presented, and the well-posedness of the underlying quantum dynamics is established. Moreover, the construction of general admissible initial data is obtained. Our results provide a rigorous mathematical analysis for the derivation of quantum hydrodynamic models and their limits, contributing to the broader understanding of interactions between quantum mechanics and compressible fluid dynamics.

Global Existence and Nonlinear Stability of Finite-Energy Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Riesz Equations with Large Initial Data of Spherical Symmetry

The compressible Euler-Riesz equations are fundamental with wide applications in astrophysics, plasma physics, and mathematical biology. In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and nonlinear stability of finite-energy solutions of the multidimensional Euler-Riesz equations with large initial data of spherical symmetry. We consider both attractive and repulsive interactions for a wide range of Riesz and logarithmic potentials for dimensions larger than or equal to two. This is achieved by the inviscid limit of the solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes-Riesz equations. The strong convergence of the vanishing viscosity solutions is achieved through delicate uniform estimates in $L^p$. It is observed that, even if the attractive potential is super-Coulomb, no concentration is formed near the origin in the inviscid limit. Moreover, we prove that the nonlinear stability of global finite-energy solutions for the Euler-Riesz equations is unconditional under a spherically symmetric perturbation around the steady solutions. Unlike the Coulomb case where the potential can be represented locally, the singularity and regularity of the nonlocal radial Riesz potential near the origin require careful analysis, which is a crucial step. Finally, unlike the Coulomb case, a Grönwall type estimate is required to overcome the difficulty of the appearance of boundary terms in the sub-Coulomb case and the singularity of the super-Coulomb potential. Furthermore, we prove the nonlinear stability of global finite-energy solutions for the compressible Euler-Riesz equations around steady states by employing concentration compactness arguments. Steady states properties are obtained by variational arguments connecting to recent advances in aggregation-diffusion equations.

Global solutions of the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with nonlocal interactions via the inviscid limit

We are concerned with the global existence of finite-energy entropy solutions of the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with (possibly) damping, alignment forces, and nonlocal interactions: Newtonian repulsion and quadratic confinement. Both the polytropic gas law and the general gas law are analyzed. This is achieved by constructing a sequence of solutions of the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-type equations with density-dependent viscosity under the stress-free boundary condition and then taking the vanishing viscosity limit. The main difficulties in this paper arise from the appearance of the nonlocal terms. In particular, some uniform higher moment estimates for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on expanding intervals with stress-free boundary conditions are obtained by careful design of the approximate initial data.

Global Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations with Large Initial Data of Spherical Symmetry

We are concerned with a global existence theory for finite-energy solutions of the multidimensional Euler-Poisson equations for both compressible gaseous stars and plasmas with large initial data of spherical symmetry. One of the main challenges is the strengthening of waves as they move radially inward towards the origin, especially under the self-consistent gravitational field for gaseous stars. A fundamental unsolved problem is whether the density of the global solution forms a delta measure ({\it i.e.}, concentration) at the origin. To solve this problem, we develop a new approach for the construction of approximate solutions as the solutions of an appropriately formulated free boundary problem for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with a carefully adapted class of degenerate density-dependent viscosity terms, so that a rigorous convergence proof of the approximate solutions to the corresponding global solution of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations with large initial data of spherical symmetry can be obtained. Even though the density may blow up near the origin at a certain time, it is proved that no delta measure ({\it i.e.}, concentration) in space-time is formed in the vanishing viscosity limit for the finite-energy solutions of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations for both gaseous stars and plasmas in the physical regimes under consideration.

Global Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations for Plasma with Doping Profile for Large Initial Data of Spherical Symmetry

We establish the global-in-time existence of solutions of finite relative-energy for the multidimensional compressible Euler-Poisson equations for plasma with doping profile for large initial data of spherical symmetry. Both the total initial energy and the initial mass are allowed to be {\it unbounded}, and the doping profile is allowed to be of large variation. This is achieved by adapting a class of degenerate density-dependent viscosity terms, so that a rigorous proof of the inviscid limit of global weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with the density-dependent viscosity terms to the corresponding global solutions of the Euler-Poisson equations for plasma with doping profile can be established. New difficulties arise when tackling the non-zero varied doping profile, which have been overcome by establishing some novel estimates for the electric field terms so that the neutrality assumption on the initial data is avoided. In particular, we prove that no concentration is formed in the inviscid limit for the finite relative-energy solutions of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations with large doping profiles in plasma physics.

Nonlinear stability and existence of two-dimensional compressible current-vortex sheets

We are concerned with nonlinear stability and existence of two-dimensional current-vortex sheets in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics. This is a nonlinear hyperbolic initial-boundary value problem with characteristic free boundary. It is well-known that current-vortex sheets may be at most weakly (neutrally) stable due to the existence of surface waves solutions that yield a loss of derivatives in the energy estimate of the solution with respect to the source terms. We first identify a sufficient condition ensuring the weak stability of the linearized current-vortex sheets problem. Under this stability condition for the background state, we show that the linearized problem obeys an energy estimate in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces with a loss of derivatives. Based on the weakly linear stability results, we then establish the local-in-time existence and nonlinear stability of current-vortex sheets by a suitable Nash-Moser iteration, provided the stability condition is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity. This result gives a new confirmation of the stabilizing effect of sufficiently strong magnetic fields on Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities.

Global solutions to rotating motion of isentropic flows with cylindrical symmetry

We are concerned with global weak solutions to the isentropic compressible Euler equations with cylindrically symmetric rotating structure, in which the origin is included. Due to the presence of the singularity at the origin, only the case excluding the origin $|\vec{x}|\geq1$ has been considered by Chen-Glimm \cite{Chen3}. The convergence and consistency of the approximate solutions are proved by using $L^{\infty}$ compensated compactness framework and vanishing viscosity method. We observe that if the blast wave initially moves outwards and if initial density and velocity decay to zero at certain algebraic rate near the origin, then the density and velocity decay at the same rate for any positive time. In particular, the initial normal velocity is assumed to be non-negative, and there is no restriction on the sign of initial angular velocity.

Nonlinear stability and existence of vortex sheets for inviscid liquid-gas two-phase flow

We are concerned with the vortex sheet solutions for the inviscid two-phase flow in two dimensions. In particular, the nonlinear stability and existence of compressible vortex sheet solutions under small perturbations are established by using a modification of the Nash-Moser iteration technique, where a priori estimates for the linearized equations have a loss of derivatives. Due to the jump of the normal derivatives of densities of liquid and gas, we obtain the normal estimates in the anisotropic Sobolev space, instead of the usual Sobolev space. New ideas and techniques are developed to close the energy estimates and derive the tame estimates for the two-phase flows.

Global Entropy Solutions to Multi-Dimensional Isentropic Gas Dynamics with Spherical Symmetry

We are concerned with spherically symmetric solutions to the Euler equations for the multi-dimensional compressible fluids, which have many applications in diverse real physical situations. The system can be reduced to one dimensional isentropic gas dynamics with geometric source terms. Due to the presence of the singularity at the origin, there are few papers devoted to this problem. The present paper proves two existence theorems of global entropy solutions. The first one focuses on the case excluding the origin in which the negative velocity is allowed, and the second one is corresponding to the case including the origin with non-negative velocity. The $L^\infty$ compensated compactness framework and vanishing viscosity method are applied to prove the convergence of approximate solutions. In the second case, we show that if the blast wave initially moves outwards and the initial densities and velocities decay to zero with certain rates near origin, then the densities and velocities tend to zero with the same rates near the origin for any positive time. In particular, the entropy solutions in two existence theorems are uniformly bounded with respect to time.

Global Entropy Solutions to the Gas Flow in General Nozzle

We are concerned with the global existence of entropy solutions for the compressible Euler equations describing the gas flow in a nozzle with general cross-sectional area, for both isentropic and isothermal fluids. New viscosities are delicately designed to obtain the uniform bound of approximate solutions. The vanishing viscosity method and compensated compactness framework are used to prove the convergence of approximate solutions. Moreover, the entropy solutions for both cases are uniformly bounded independent of time. No smallness condition is assumed on initial data. The techniques developed here can be applied to compressible Euler equations with general source terms.

Large time behavior of entropy solutions to one-dimensional unipolar hydrodynamic model for semiconductor devices

We are concerned with the global existence and large time behavior of entropy solutions to the one dimensional unipolar hydrodynamic model for semiconductors in the form of Euler-Poisson equations in a bounded interval. In this paper, we first prove the global existence of entropy solution by vanishing viscosity and compensated compactness framework. In particular, the solutions are uniformly bounded with respect to space and time variables by introducing modified Riemann invariants and the theory of invariant region. Based on the uniform estimates of density, we further show that the entropy solution converges to the corresponding unique stationary solution exponentially in time. No any smallness condition is assumed on the initial data and doping profile. Moreover, the novelty in this paper is about the unform bound with respect to time for the weak solutions of the isentropic Euler-Possion system.
