Simulating SIR processes on networks using weighted shortest paths

We present a framework to simulate SIR processes on networks using weighted shortest paths. Our framework maps the SIR dynamics to weights assigned to the edges of the network, which can be done for Markovian and non-Markovian processes alike. The weights represent the propagation time between the adjacent nodes for a particular realization. We simulate the dynamics by constructing an ensemble of such realizations, which can be done by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method or by direct sampling. The former provides a runtime advantage when realizations from all possible sources are computed as the weighted shortest paths can be re-calculated more efficiently. We apply our framework to three empirical networks and analyze the expected propagation time between all pairs of nodes. Furthermore, we have employed our framework to perform efficient source detection and to improve strategies for time-critical vaccination.

Inferring short-term volatility indicators from Bitcoin blockchain

In this paper, we study the possibility of inferring early warning indicators (EWIs) for periods of extreme bitcoin price volatility using features obtained from Bitcoin daily transaction graphs. We infer the low-dimensional representations of transaction graphs in the time period from 2012 to 2017 using Bitcoin blockchain, and demonstrate how these representations can be used to predict extreme price volatility events. Our EWI, which is obtained with a non-negative decomposition, contains more predictive information than those obtained with singular value decomposition or scalar value of the total Bitcoin transaction volume.

Underestimated cost of targeted attacks on complex networks

The robustness of complex networks under targeted attacks is deeply connected to the resilience of complex systems, i.e., the ability to make appropriate responses to the attacks. In this article, we investigated the state-of-the-art targeted node attack algorithms and demonstrate that they become very inefficient when the cost of the attack is taken into consideration. In this paper, we made explicit assumption that the cost of removing a node is proportional to the number of adjacent links that are removed, i.e., higher degree nodes have higher cost. Finally, for the case when it is possible to attack links, we propose a simple and efficient edge removal strategy named Hierarchical Power Iterative Normalized cut (HPI-Ncut).The results on real and artificial networks show that the HPI-Ncut algorithm outperforms all the node removal and link removal attack algorithms when the cost of the attack is taken into consideration. In addition, we show that on sparse networks, the complexity of this hierarchical power iteration edge removal algorithm is only $O(n\log^{2+ε}(n))$.

A Nonlinear Orthogonal Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Approach to Subspace Clustering

A recent theoretical analysis shows the equivalence between non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and spectral clustering based approach to subspace clustering. As NMF and many of its variants are essentially linear, we introduce a nonlinear NMF with explicit orthogonality and derive general kernel-based orthogonal multiplicative update rules to solve the subspace clustering problem. In nonlinear orthogonal NMF framework, we propose two subspace clustering algorithms, named kernel-based non-negative subspace clustering KNSC-Ncut and KNSC-Rcut and establish their connection with spectral normalized cut and ratio cut clustering. We further extend the nonlinear orthogonal NMF framework and introduce a graph regularization to obtain a factorization that respects a local geometric structure of the data after the nonlinear mapping. The proposed NMF-based approach to subspace clustering takes into account the nonlinear nature of the manifold, as well as its intrinsic local geometry, which considerably improves the clustering performance when compared to the several recently proposed state-of-the-art methods.

Cosmological particle creation in a hadronic fluid

Acoustic perturbations in an expanding hadronic fluid at temperatures below the chiral transition point represent massless pions propagating in curved spacetime geometry. In comoving coordinates the corresponding analog metric tensor describes a hyperbolic FRW spacetime. We study the analog cosmological particle creation of pions below the critical point of the chiral phase transition. We compare the cosmological creation spectrum with the spectrum of analog Hawking radiation at the analog trapping horizon.

FRW universe in the laboratory

We consider an expanding relativistic fluid with spherical symmetry as a model for an analog FRW spacetime. In the framework of relativistic acoustic geometry we demonstrate how to mimic an arbitrary FRW spacetime with positive, zero or negative spatial curvature. In the Lagrangian description we show that a particular FRW spacetime is obtained by choosing the appropriate potential. We discuss several examples and in particular the analog de Sitter spacetime in the coordinate representation with positive and negative spatial curvature.

Trapped surfaces in a hadronic fluid

Pion propagation in a hadronic fluid with a non-homogeneous relativistic flow is studied in terms of the linear sigma model. The wave equation turns out to be equivalent to the equation of motion for a massless scalar field propagating in a curved spacetime geometry. The metric tensor depends locally on the soft pion dispersion relation and the four-velocity of the fluid. For a relativistic flow in curved spacetime the apparent and trapping horizons may be defined in the same way as in general relativity. An expression for the analog surface gravity is derived.

Analogue surface gravity near the QCD chiral phase transition

Using the formalism of relativistic acoustic geometry we study the expanding chiral fluid in the regime of broken chiral symmetry near the QCD chiral phase transition temperature T_c. The dynamics of pions below T_c is described by the equation of motion for a massless scalar field propagating in curved spacetime similar to an open FRW universe. The metric tensor depends locally on the soft pion dispersion relation and the four-velocity of the fluid. In the neighborhood of the critical point an analogue trapped region forms with the analogue trapped horizon as its boundary. We show that the associated surface gravity diverges near the critical point as 1/(T_c-T). Hence, if the horizon forms close to the critical temperature the analogue Hawking temperature may be comparable with or even larger than the background fluid temperature.
