Emergence of Fermi-Dirac Thermalization in the Quantum Computer Core

We model an isolated quantum computer as a two-dimensional lattice of qubits (spin halves) with fluctuations in individual qubit energies and residual short-range inter-qubit couplings. In the limit when fluctuations and couplings are small compared to the one-qubit energy spacing, the spectrum has a band structure and we study the quantum computer core (central band) with the highest density of states. Above a critical inter-qubit coupling strength, quantum chaos sets in, leading to quantum ergodicity of eigenstates in an isolated quantum computer. The onset of chaos results in the interaction induced dynamical thermalization and the occupation numbers well described by the Fermi-Dirac distribution. This thermalization destroys the noninteracting qubit structure and sets serious requirements for the quantum computer operability.

Quantum computing of quantum chaos and imperfection effects

We study numerically the imperfection effects in the quantum computing of the kicked rotator model in the regime of quantum chaos. It is shown that there are two types of physical characteristics: for one of them the quantum computation errors grow exponentially with the number of qubits in the computer while for the other the growth is polynomial. Certain similarity between classical and quantum computing errors is also discussed.

Quantum Poincare Recurrences for Hydrogen Atom in a Microwave Field

We study the time dependence of the ionization probability of Rydberg atoms driven by a microwave field, both in classical and in quantum mechanics. The quantum survival probability follows the classical one up to the Heisenberg time and then decays algebraically as P(t) ~ 1/t. This decay law derives from the exponentially long times required to escape from some region of the phase space, due to tunneling and localization effects. We also provide parameter values which should allow to observe such decay in laboratory experiments.

Low energy transition in spectral statistics of 2D interactingfermions

We study the level spacing statistics $P(s)$ and eigenstate properties of spinless fermions with Coulomb interaction on a two dimensional lattice at constant filling factor and various disorder strength. In the limit of large lattice size, $P(s)$ undergoes a transition from the Poisson to the Wigner-Dyson distribution at a critical total energy independent of the number of fermions. This implies the emergence of quantum ergodicity induced by interaction and delocalization in the Hilbert space at zero temperature.

Quantum ergodicity for electrons in two dimensions

We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on a two dimensional (2D) disordered lattice. For the case of two electrons the analytical estimates are presented showing a transition from localized to delocalized states in a way similar to the Anderson transition in 3D. The localized phase corresponds to large values of the parameter r_s, which is determined by the ratio of the Coulomb and Fermi energies. The numerical investigations of the spectral statistics P(s) in a system with up to N_p=30 spin polarized electrons show the transition from the Poisson to the Wigner-Dyson distribution at a total electron energy independent of N_p. The relation to experiments on the metal-insulator transition in 2D is also discussed.

Quantum opening of the Coulomb gap in two dimensions

For a constant density of spinless fermions in strongly disordered two dimensional clusters, the energy level spacing between the ground state and the first excitation is studied for increasing system sizes. The average indicates a smooth opening of the gap when the Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s$ increases from 0 to 3, while the distribution exhibits a sharp Poisson-Wigner-like transition at $r_s \approx 1$. The results are related to the transition from Mott to Efros-Shklovskii hopping conductivity recently observed at a similar ratio $r_s$.

Quantum Poincaré Recurrences

We show that quantum effects modify the decay rate of Poincaré recurrences P(t) in classical chaotic systems with hierarchical structure of phase space. The exponent p of the algebraic decay P(t) ~ 1/t^p is shown to have the universal value p=1 due to tunneling and localization effects. Experimental evidence of such decay should be observable in mesoscopic systems and cold atoms.

Chaotic enhancement in microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms

The microwave ionization of internally chaotic Rydberg atoms is studied analytically and numerically. The internal chaos is induced by magnetic or static electric fields. This leads to a chaotic enhancement of microwave excitation. The dynamical localization theory gives a detailed description of the excitation process even in a regime where up to few thousands photons are required to ionize one atom. Possible laboratory experiments are also discussed.

Quantum Fractal Eigenstates

We study quantum chaos in open dynamical systems and show that it is characterized by quantum fractal eigenstates located on the underlying classical strange repeller. The states with longest life times typically reveal a scars structure on the classical fractal set.

Relaxation process in a regime of quantum chaos

We show that the quantum relaxation process in a classically chaotic open dynamical system is characterized by a quantum relaxation time scale t_q. This scale is much shorter than the Heisenberg time and much larger than the Ehrenfest time: t_q ~ g^alpha where g is the conductance of the system and the exponent alpha is close to 1/2. As a result, quantum and classical decay probabilities remain close up to values P ~ exp(-sqrt(g)) similarly to the case of open disordered systems.

Breit-Wigner width and participation ratio in finite interacting Fermi systems

For many-body Fermi systems we determine the dependence of the Breit-Wigner width and inverse participation ratio (IPR) on interaction strength U > Uc and energy excitation dE > dE_ch when a crossover from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson P(s)-statistics takes place. At U > Uc the eigenstates are composed of a large number of noninteracting states and even for U < Uc there is a regime where P(s) is close to the Poisson distribution but IPR >> 1.

Hundred photon microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms in a static electric field

We present analytical and numerical results for the microwave excitation of nonhydrogenic atoms in a static electric field when up to 1000 photons are required to ionize an atom. For small microwave fields, dynamical localization in photon number leads to exponentially small ionization while above quantum delocalization border ionization goes in a diffusive way. For alkali atoms in a static field the ionization border is much lower than in hydrogen due to internal chaos.

Emergence of Quantum Ergodicity in Rough Billiards

By analytical mapping of the eigenvalue problem in rough billiards on to a band random matrix model a new regime of Wigner ergodicity is found. There the eigenstates are extended over the whole energy surface but have a strongly peaked structure. The results of numerical simulations and implications for level statistics are also discussed.

Dynamical Localization: Hydrogen Atoms in Magnetic and Microwave fields

We show that dynamical localization for excited hydrogen atoms in magnetic and microwave fields takes place at quite low microwave frequency much lower than the Kepler frequency. The estimates of localization length are given for different parameter regimes, showing that the quantum delocalization border drops significantly as compared to the case of zero magnetic field. This opens up broad possibilities for laboratory investigations.

Quantum localization in rough billiards

We study the level spacing statistics p(s) and eigenfunction properties in a billiard with a rough boundary. Quantum effects lead to localization of classical diffusion in the angular momentum space and the Shnirelman peak in p(s) at small s. The ergodic regime with Wigner-Dyson statistics is identified as a function of roughness. Applications for the Q-spoiling in optical resonators are also discussed.

Two interacting Hofstadter butterflies

The problem of two interacting particles in a quasiperiodic potential is addressed. Using analytical and numerical methods, we explore the spectral properties and eigenstates structure from the weak to the strong interaction case. More precisely, a semiclassical approach based on non commutative geometry techniques permits to understand the intricate structure of such a spectrum. An interaction induced localization effect is furthermore emphasized. We discuss the application of our results on a two-dimensional model of two particles in a uniform magnetic field with on-site interaction.

Double butterfly spectrum for two interacting particles in the Harper model

We study the effect of interparticle interaction $U$ on the spectrum of the Harper model and show that it leads to a pure-point component arising from the multifractal spectrum of non interacting problem. Our numerical studies allow to understand the global structure of the spectrum. Analytical approach developed permits to understand the origin of localized states in the limit of strong interaction $U$ and fine spectral structure for small $U$.
