Heegner points in Coleman families

We construct two-parameter analytic families of Galois cohomology classes interpolating the etale Abel--Jacobi images of generalised Heegner cycles, with both the modular form and Grossencharacter varying in p-adic families.

Cyclic Isogenies for Abelian Varieties with Real Multiplication

We study quotients of principally polarized abelian varieties with real multiplication by Galois-stable finite subgroups and describe when these quotients are principally polarizable. We use this characterization to provide an algorithm to compute explicit cyclic isogenies from kernel for abelian varieties with real multiplication over finite fields. Our algorithm is polynomial in the size of the finite field as well as the degree of the isogeny and is based on Mumford's theory of theta functions and theta embeddings. Recently, the algorithm has been successfully applied to obtain new results on the discrete logarithm problem in genus 2 as well as to study the discrete logarithm problem in genus 3.

Horizontal Distribution Relations for Special Cycles on Unitary Shimura Varieties: Split Case

We study the local behavior of special cycles on Shimura varieties for $\mathbf{U}(2, 1) \times \mathbf{U}(1, 1)$ in the setting of the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures at primes $\tau$ of the totally real field of definition of the unitary spaces which are split in the corresponding totally imaginary quadratic extension. We establish a local formula for their fields of definition, and prove a distribution relation between the Galois and Hecke actions on them. This complements work of \cite{jetchev:unitary} at inert primes, where the combinatorics of the formulas are reduced to calculations on the Bruhat--Tits trees, which in the split case must be replaced with higher-dimensional buildings.

Isogeny graphs of ordinary abelian varieties

Fix a prime number $\ell$. Graphs of isogenies of degree a power of $\ell$ are well-understood for elliptic curves, but not for higher-dimensional abelian varieties. We study the case of absolutely simple ordinary abelian varieties over a finite field. We analyse graphs of so-called $\mathfrak l$-isogenies, resolving that they are (almost) volcanoes in any dimension. Specializing to the case of principally polarizable abelian surfaces, we then exploit this structure to describe graphs of a particular class of isogenies known as $(\ell, \ell)$-isogenies: those whose kernels are maximal isotropic subgroups of the $\ell$-torsion for the Weil pairing. We use these two results to write an algorithm giving a path of computable isogenies from an arbitrary absolutely simple ordinary abelian surface towards one with maximal endomorphism ring, which has immediate consequences for the CM-method in genus 2, for computing explicit isogenies, and for the random self-reducibility of the discrete logarithm problem in genus 2 cryptography.

The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Formula for Elliptic Curves of Analytic Rank One

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be a semistable elliptic curve such that $\mathrm{ord}_{s=1}L(E,s) = 1$. We prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/\mathbb{Q}$ for each prime $p \geq 5$ of good reduction such that $E[p]$ is irreducible: $$ \mathrm{ord}_p \left (\frac{L'(E,1)}{\Omega_E\cdot\mathrm{Reg}(E/\mathbb{Q})} \right ) = \mathrm{ord}_p \left (\#\mathrm{Sha}(E/\mathbb{Q})\prod_{\ell\leq \infty} c_\ell(E/\mathbb{Q}) \right ). $$ This formula also holds for $p=3$ provided $a_p(E)=0$ if $E$ has supersingular reduction at $p$.

Vertical Distribution Relations For Special Cycles on Unitary Shimura Varieties

We consider cycles on a 3-dimensional Shimura varieties attached to a unitary group, defined over extensions of a CM field $E$, which appear in the context of the conjectures of Gan, Gross, and Prasad \cite{gan-gross-prasad}. We establish a vertical distribution relation for these cycles over an anticyclotomic extension of $E$, complementing the horizontal distribution relation of \cite{jetchev:unitary}, and use this to define a family of norm-compatible cycles over these fields, thus obtaining a universal norm construction similar to the Heegner $\Lambda$-module constructed from Heegner points.

Horizontal isogeny graphs of ordinary abelian varieties and the discrete logarithm problem

Fix an ordinary abelian variety defined over a finite field. The ideal class group of its endomorphism ring acts freely on the set of isogenous varieties with same endomorphism ring, by complex multiplication. Any subgroup of the class group, and generating set thereof, induces an isogeny graph on the orbit of the variety for this subgroup. We compute (under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis) some bounds on the norms of prime ideals generating it, such that the associated graph has good expansion properties. We use these graphs, together with a recent algorithm of Dudeanu, Jetchev and Robert for computing explicit isogenies in genus 2, to prove random self-reducibility of the discrete logarithm problem within the subclasses of principally polarizable ordinary abelian surfaces with fixed endomorphism ring. In addition, we remove the heuristics in the complexity analysis of an algorithm of Galbraith for explicitly computing isogenies between two elliptic curves in the same isogeny class, and extend it to a more general setting including genus 2.

Liftings of Reduction Maps for Quaternion Algebras

We construct liftings of reduction maps from CM points to supersingular points for general quaternion algebras and use these liftings to establish a precise correspondence between CM points on indefinite quaternion algebras with a given conductor and CM points on certain corresponding totally definite quaternion algebras.

Equidistribution of Heegner Points and Ternary Quadratic Forms

We prove new equidistribution results for Galois orbits of Heegner points with respect to reduction maps at inert primes. The arguments are based on two different techniques: primitive representations of integers by quadratic forms and distribution relations for Heegner points. Our results generalize one of the equidistribution theorems established by Cornut and Vatsal in the sense that we allow both the fundamental discriminant and the conductor to grow. Moreover, for fixed fundamental discriminant and variable conductor, we deduce an effective surjectivity theorem for the reduction map from Heegner points to supersingular points at a fixed inert prime. Our results are applicable to the setting considered by Kolyvagin in the construction of the Heegner points Euler system.

Explicit Heegner Points: Kolyvagin's Conjecture and Non-trivial Elements in the Shafarevich-Tate Group

Kolyvagin used Heegner points to associate a system of cohomology classes to an elliptic curve over $\Q$ and conjectured that the system contains a non-trivial class. His conjecture has profound implications on the structure of Selmer groups. We provide new computational and theoretical evidence for Kolyvagin's conjecture. More precisely, we explicitly compute Heegner points over ring class fields and use these points to verify the conjecture for specific elliptic curves of rank two. We explain how Kolyvagin's conjecture implies that if the analytic rank of an elliptic curve is at least two then the $\Z_p$-corank of the corresponding Selmer group is at least two as well. We also use explicitly computed Heegner points to produce non-trivial classes in the Shafarevich-Tate group.
