Nucleon Strong-Interactions Size From Charmonium Photoproduction

Protons and neutrons differ dramatically in their electromagnetic sizes, but are bound by the strong (color) force and have nearly identical masses, like two twin states of the same ``nucleon". To reveal the overall spatial extent, it must be examined through the strong interaction rather than electromagnetism. The $J/\psi$ particle, a compact color-charge dipole of a charm quark and antiquark, provides an ideal probe. Recent high-precision measurements of near-threshold $J/\psi$ production at Jefferson Lab offer a more precise glimpse of the proton's gluonic spatial structure. Combining these data with recent quark-sector results, we extract the distribution of the color field underlying mass generation in the nucleon and find it extends beyond both charge and mass distributions, revealing the nucleon's overall strong-interaction spatial extent of $0.94\pm 0.09$ fm.

$F_K/F_π$ as a precision test of a new four flavor Domain Wall Fermion action

We present a new set of lattice QCD ensembles with four flavors of smeared Möbius Domain Wall Fermions with good chiral symmetry and small fifth-dimensional extent. A modest amount of computing resources was sufficient to generate 30 publicly-available ensembles spanning five lattice spacings and a broad range of pion masses down to physical. To scrutinize our action we determine $F_{K^{\pm}}/F_{π^{\pm}} = 1.1962(34)$, a key quantity for precision CKM unitarity tests, heralding a future of inexpensive high-precision calculations of hadronic observables with chiral fermions.

Moments of parton distributions functions of the pion from lattice QCD using gradient flow

We present a nonperturbative determination of the pion valence parton distribution function (PDF) moment ratios $\left\langle x^{n-1} \right\rangle / \left\langle x \right\rangle$ up to $n=6$, using the gradient flow in lattice QCD. As a testing ground, we employ SU($3$) isosymmetric gauge configurations generated by the OpenLat initiative with a pseudoscalar mass of $m_π\simeq 411~\text{MeV}$. Our analysis uses four lattice spacings and a nonperturbatively improved action, enabling full control over the continuum extrapolation, and the limit of vanishing flow time, $t\to0$. The flowed ratios exhibit O($a^2$) scaling across the ensembles, and the continuum-extrapolated results, matched to the $\overline {\text{MS}}$ scheme at $μ= 2$ GeV using next-to-next-to-leading order matching coefficients, show only mild residual flow-time dependence. The resulting ratios, computed with a relatively small number of configurations, are consistent with phenomenological expectations for the pion's valence distribution, with statistical uncertainties that are competitive with modern global fits. These findings demonstrate that the gradient flow provides an efficient and systematically improvable method to access partonic quantities from first principles. Future extensions of this work will target lighter pion masses toward the physical point, and applications to nucleon structure such as the proton PDFs and the gluon and sea-quark distributions.

Gradient flow for parton distribution functions: first application to the pion

Parton distribution functions (PDFs) are central to precision QCD phenomenology. Their Mellin moments can be computed on the lattice, but direct determinations using local operators, besides $\langle x \rangle$, face severe challenges from reduced hypercubic symmetry, limiting results to the lowest moments. A recently proposed method resolves these issues using gradient flow. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by computing ratios of flavor non-singlet pion PDF moments up to $\langle x^5 \rangle$, on four lattice spacings at $m_π\simeq 411$ MeV. The moments and reconstructed PDF agree quantitatively with recent phenomenological extractions.

Lattice evidence that scalar glueballs are small

This work reports the first calculation of the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the scalar glueball, performed via lattice field theory in Yang-Mills theory at a single lattice spacing. The glueball GFFs are compared with those of other hadrons as determined in previous lattice calculations, providing strong indications that glueballs have a different gluonic structure than typical hadronic states. A mass radius of 0.263(31) fm is predicted, supporting previous suggestions that the scalar glueball is significantly smaller than other hadrons. These results point towards a potential smoking-gun characteristic to target by experimental glueball searches.

Filtered Rayleigh-Ritz is all you need

Recent work has shown that the (block) Lanczos algorithm can be used to extract approximate energy spectra and matrix elements from (matrices of) correlation functions in quantum field theory, and identified exact coincidences between Lanczos analysis methods and others. In this work, we note another coincidence: the Lanczos algorithm is equivalent to the well-known Rayleigh-Ritz method applied to Krylov subspaces. Rayleigh-Ritz provides optimal eigenvalue approximations within subspaces; we find that spurious-state filtering allows these optimality guarantees to be retained in the presence of statistical noise. We explore the relation between Lanczos and Prony's method, their block generalizations, generalized pencil of functions (GPOF), and methods based on the generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP), and find they all fall into a larger "Prony-Ritz equivalence class", identified as all methods which solve a finite-dimensional spectrum exactly given sufficient correlation function (matrix) data. This equivalence allows simpler and more numerically stable implementations of (block) Lanczos analyses.

Signs of Non-Monotonic Finite-Volume Corrections to $g_A$

We study finite-volume (FV) corrections to determinations of $g_A$ via lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using analytic results and numerical analysis. We observe that $SU(2)$ Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory does not provide an unambiguous prediction for the sign of the FV correction, which is not surprising when one also considers large-$N_c$ constraints on the axial couplings. We further show that non-monotonic FV corrections are naturally allowed when one considers either including explicit $Δ$-resonance degrees of freedom or one works to higher orders in the chiral expansion. We investigate the potential impact of these FV corrections with a precision study of $g_A$ using models of FV corrections that are monotonic and non-monotonic. Using lattice QCD data that is approximately at the 1% level of precision, we do not see significant evidence of non-monotonic corrections. Looking forward to the next phase of lattice QCD calculations, we estimate that calculations that are between the 0.1%-1%-level of precision may be sensitive to these FV artifacts. Finally, we present an update of the CalLat prediction of $g_A$ in the isospin limit with sub-percent precision, $g_A^{\rm QCD} = 1.2674(96)$.

Gravitational form factors of glueballs in Yang-Mills theory

This work presents preliminary results of the first determination of the energy-momentum tensor form factors of the scalar glueball, referred to as gravitational form factors (GFFs). The calculation has been carried out in lattice Yang-Mills theory at a single lattice spacing. Using variationally optimized operators, the matrix elements are extracted from ratios of three-point functions to two-point functions. The glueball GFFs and their kinematic dependence are compared to those of other hadrons from previous calculations.

Probing higher moments of pion parton distribution functions

We present the first numerical investigation of the method proposed in Ref. [1] to utilize gradient flow to obtain precise determinations of higher moments of PDFs from lattice QCD, circumventing power divergent mixing with lower dimensional operators. We apply this method to obtain moments of the isovector PDF of the pion using four Stabilized Wilson Fermion ensembles with $m_π\simeq 411$ MeV and lattice spacings $a \simeq 0.064, 0.077, 0.094$, and $0.12$ fm. We present preliminary results of ratios of three-point functions as a function of flow time, which can be used to extract the ratios $\left\langle x^2 \right\rangle/\left\langle x \right\rangle$ and $\left\langle x^3 \right\rangle/\left\langle x \right\rangle$. We find that a significantly higher precision can be achieved with this method compared to the canonical approach, which requires boosting and cannot reach higher than the $\left\langle x^3 \right\rangle$ moment.

Gravitational form factors of the proton from lattice QCD

The gravitational form factors (GFFs) of a hadron encode fundamental aspects of its structure, including its shape and size as defined from e.g., its energy density. This work presents a determination of the flavor decomposition of the GFFs of the proton from lattice QCD, in the kinematic region $0\leq -t\leq 2~\text{GeV}^2$. The decomposition into up-, down-, strange-quark, and gluon contributions provides first-principles constraints on the role of each constituent in generating key proton structure observables, such as its mechanical radius, mass radius, and $D$-term.

Electroweak three-body decays in the presence of two- and three-body bound states

Recently, formalism has been derived for studying electroweak transition amplitudes for three-body systems both in infinite and finite volumes. The formalism provides exact relations that the infinite-volume amplitudes must satisfy, as well as a relationship between physical amplitudes and finite-volume matrix elements, which can be constrained from lattice QCD calculations. This formalism poses additional challenges when compared with the analogous well-studied two-body equivalent one, including the necessary step of solving integral equations of singular functions. In this work, we provide some non-trivial analytical and numerical tests on the aforementioned formalism. In particular, we consider a case where the three-particle system can have three-body bound states as well as bound states in the two-body subsystem. For kinematics below the three-body threshold, we demonstrate that the scattering amplitudes satisfy unitarity. We also check that for these kinematics the finite-volume matrix elements are accurately described by the formalism for two-body systems up to exponentially suppressed corrections. Finally, we verify that in the case of the three-body bound state, the finite-volume matrix element is equal to the infinite-volume coupling of the bound state, up to exponentially suppressed errors.

Gravitational form factors of the pion from lattice QCD

The two gravitational form factors of the pion, $A^π(t)$ and $D^π(t)$, are computed as functions of the momentum transfer squared $t$ in the kinematic region $0\leq -t< 2~\text{GeV}^2$ on a lattice QCD ensemble with quark masses corresponding to a close-to-physical pion mass $m_π\approx 170~\text{MeV}$ and $N_f=2+1$ quark flavors. The flavor decomposition of these form factors into gluon, up/down light-quark, and strange-quark contributions is presented in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme at energy scale $μ=2~\text{GeV}$, with renormalization factors computed nonperturbatively via the RI-MOM scheme. Using monopole and $z$-expansion fits to the gravitational form factors, we obtain estimates for the pion momentum fraction and $D$-term that are consistent with the momentum fraction sum rule and the next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory prediction for $D^π(0)$.

Gluon gravitational structure of hadrons of different spin

The gravitational form factors (GFFs) of hadrons encode the matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor of QCD. These quantities describe how energy, spin, and various mechanical properties of hadrons are carried by their quark and gluon constituents. We present the gluon GFFs of the pion, nucleon, $ρ$ meson, and $Δ$ baryon as functions of the squared momentum transfer $t$ in the region $0 \leq -t < 2 \; \text{GeV}^2$, as determined in a lattice QCD study with pion mass $m_π = 450(5) \; \text{MeV}$. By fitting the extracted GFFs using multipole and z-parameter expansion functional forms, we extract various gluon contributions to the energy, pressure, and shear force distributions of the hadrons in the 3D and 2D Breit frames as well as in the infinite momentum frame. We also obtain estimates for the corresponding gluon mechanical and mass radii, as well as the forward-limit gluon contributions to the momentum fraction and angular momentum of the hadrons.
