$\aleph_m$-presented Gorenstein flat modules and Gorenstein dimensions of groups

Let $G$ be a group and $k$ be a commutative ring. The Gorenstein homological dimension $\text{Ghd}_k G$ and the Gorenstein cohomological dimension $\text{Gcd}_k G$ of $G$ over $k$ are defined as the Gorenstein flat and the Gorenstein projective dimension, respectively, of the trivial $kG$-module $k$. We prove that the Gorenstein cohomological dimension of a countable group $G$ is at most one more than its Gorenstein homological dimension and, more generally, that $\text{Gcd}_k G\le\text{Ghd}_k G+m+1$ for every $m\ge0$ and every group $G$ of cardinality at most $\aleph_m$. When the supremum sfli$k$ of the flat dimensions of the injective $k$-modules is finite, this gives $\text{Ghd}_k G\le\text{Gcd}_k G\le\text{Ghd}_k G+1$ for every countable group $G$, so that the two dimensions are finite simultaneously. These results are Gorenstein analogues of Bieri's inequality for the homological and the cohomological dimension of countable groups. They rest on a module-theoretic theorem of independent interest, which is a Gorenstein version of results of Jensen and Osofsky on the projective dimension of flat modules: over an arbitrary ring, every $\aleph_m$-presented Gorenstein flat module has projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat dimension at most $m+1$. An appendix characterizes the modules of PGF-dimension at most $n$ as the direct summands of the strongly $n$-PGF modules.

Gorenstein homological dimension of group extensions

We study the Gorenstein homological dimension $Ghd_k G$ of groups $G$ which are of type $FP_{\infty}$ over a commutative ring $k$. Our main result shows that, over an arbitrary ring $R$, every finitely presented Gorenstein flat $R$-module is projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat. Consequently, for a group $G$ of type $FP_\infty$ over $k$ with sfli$k<\infty$, the three natural dimensions for $G$, namely Gorenstein homological, Gorenstein cohomological and projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat, all coincide. Building on this collapse, we establish a Gorenstein homological analogue of Fel$'$dman's theorem, a formula for iterated $m$-fold self-extensions of a group $N$ of type $FP_\infty$ over $\mathbb Z$, and a field-detection theorem, showing that the Gorenstein homological dimension of a group of type $FP_\infty$ over a principal ideal domain is realized after passing to a suitable field.

Tableaux and orbit harmonics quotients for finite transformation monoids

We extend Grood's tableau construction of irreducible representations of the rook monoid and Steinberg's analogous result for the full transformation monoid. Our approach is characteristic-free and applies to any submonoid $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of the partial transformation monoid on an $n$-element set that contains the symmetric group. To achieve this, we introduce and study a functor from the category of rational representations of the monoid of $n \times n$ matrices to the category of finite dimensional representations of $\mathcal{M}(n)$. We establish two branching rules. Our main results describe graded module structures of orbit harmonics quotients for the rook, partial transformation, and full transformation monoids. This yields analogs of the Cauchy decomposition for polynomial rings in $n\times n$ variables.

On the free LAnKe on $3n-2$ generators: a theorem of Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs

A LAnKe (also known as a Filippov algebra or a Lie algebra of the $n$-th kind) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs have shown that the symmetric group acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $2n-1$ generators as an irreducible representation. They announced that the multilinear component on $3n-2$ generators decomposes as a direct sum of two irreducible symmetric group representations and a proof was given recently in a subsequent paper by Friedmann, Hanlon and Wachs. In the present paper we provide a proof of the later statement. The two proofs are substantially different.

Gorenstein versions of type $Φ$ groups and some Gcd-cd, Ghd-hd coincidences

In this short note, we characterise some Gorenstein versions of the concept of a group being of type $Φ$ as introduced by Olympia Talelli. And, we also generalize a different Talelli result regarding the coincidence of the classical and the Gorenstein cohomological dimension of torsion-free groups in Kropholler's $\LH\mathscr{F}$ class.

Total trades, intersection matrices and Specht modules

Trades are important objects in combinatorial design theory that may be realized as certain elements of kernels of inclusion matrices. Total trades were introduced recently by Ghorbani, Kamali and Khosravshahi, who showed that over a field of characteristic zero the vector space of trades decomposes into a direct sum of spaces of total trades. In this paper, we show that the vector space spanned by the permutations of a total trade is an irreducible representation of the symmetric group. As a corollary, the previous decomposition theorem is recovered. Also, a basis is obtained for the module of total trades in the spirit of Specht polynomials. More generally, in the second part of the paper we consider intersection matrices and determine the irreducible decompositions of their images. This generalizes previously known results concerning ranks of special cases.

On the action of the symmetric group on the free LAnKe: a question of Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs

A LAnKe (also known as a Lie algebra of the $n$th kind, or a Filippov algebra) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_m$ acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $m=(n-1)k+1$ generators, where $k$ is the number of brackets, by permutation of the generators. The corresponding representation was studied by Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs, who asked whether for $n \ge k$, its irreducible decomposition contains no summand whose Young diagram has at most $k-1$ columns. The answer is affirmative if $k \le 3$. In this paper, we show that the answer is affirmative for all $k$. A proof has been given recently by Friedmann, Hanlon and Wachs. The two proofs are completely different.

Finiteness criteria for Gorenstein homological dimension and some invariants of groups

In this paper, we study finiteness criteria for the Gorenstein homological dimension of groups over a commutative ring of finite Gorenstein weak global dimension and provide estimates for the Gorenstein weak global dimension of group rings. As a result, we obtain Gorenstein analogues of well known properties in classical homological algebra over large families of infinite groups. Moreover, we prove that over a commutative ring of finite Gorenstein weak global dimension, the Gorenstein cohomological dimension of a group G bounds its Gorenstein homological dimension. Finally, we compare the generalized cohomological dimension and the generalized homological dimension of a group.

Gorenstein analogues of a projectivity criterion over group algebras

We formulate and answer Gorenstein projective, flat, and injective analogues of a classical projectivity question for group rings under some mild additional assumptions. Although the original question, that was proposed by Jang-Hyun Jo in 2007, was for integral group rings, in this article, we deal with more general commutative base rings. We make use of the vast developments that have happened in the field of Gorenstein homological algebra over group rings in recent years, and we also improve and generalize several existing results from this area along the way.

Presentations of Schur and Specht modules in characteristic zero

New presentations of Specht modules of symmetric groups over fields of characteristic zero have been obtained by Brauner, Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs. These involve generators that are column tabloids and relations that are Garnir relations with maximal number of exchanges between consecutive columns or symmetrization of Garnir relations with minimal number of exchanges between consecutive columns. In this paper, we examine Garnir relations and their symmetrization with any number of exchanges. In both cases, we provide sufficient arithmetic conditions so that the corresponding quotient is a Specht module. In particular, in the first case this yields new presentations of Specht modules if the parts of the conjugate partition that correspond to maximal number of exchanges greater than 1 are distinct. These results generalize the presentations mentioned above and offer an answer to a question of Friedmann, Hanlon and Wachs. Our approach is via representations of the general linear group.

Gorenstein modules and dimension over large families of infinite groups

We give characterizations of Gorenstein projective, Gorenstein flat and Gorenstein injective modules over the group algebra for large families of infinite groups and show that every weak Gorenstein projective, weak Gorenstein flat and weak Gorenstein injective module is Gorenstein projective, Gorenstein flat and Gorenstein injective, respectively. These characterizations provide Gorenstein analogues of Benson's cofibrant modules. We deduce that, over a commutative ring of finite Gorenstein weak global dimension, every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat. Moreover, we study cases where the tensor product and the group of homomorphisms between modules over the group algebra is a Gorenstein module. Finally, we determine the Gorenstein homological dimension of an $\textsc{\textbf{lh}}\mathfrak{F}$-group over a commutative ring of finite Gorenstein weak global dimension.

On stability and nonvanishing of homomorphism spaces between Weyl modules

Consider the general linear group $G=GL_{n}(K)$ defined over an infinite field $K$ of positive characteristic $p$. We denote by $Δ(λ)$ the Weyl module of $G$ which corresponds to a partition $λ$. Let $λ, μ$ be partitions of $r$ and let $γ$ be partition with all parts divisible by $p$. In the first main result of this paper, we find sufficient conditions on $λ, μ$ and $γ$ so that $Hom_G(Δ(λ),Δ(μ))$ $ \simeq$ $ Hom_G(Δ(λ+γ),Δ(μ+γ))$, thus providing an answer to a question of D. Hemmer. As corollaries we obtain stability and periodicity results for homomorphism spaces. In the second main result we find related sufficient conditions on $λ, μ$ and $p$ so that $Hom_G(Δ(λ),Δ(μ))$ is nonzero. An explicit map is provided that corresponds to the sum of all semistandard tableaux of shape $μ$ and weight $λ$.

Relating homomorphism spaces between Specht modules of different degrees

Let $K$ be an infinite field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $λ, μ$ be partitions of $n$, where $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_n)$ and $μ=(μ_1,..,μ_n)$. By $S^λ$ we denote the Specht module corresponding to $λ$ for the group algebra $K\mathfrak{S}_n$ of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. D. Hemmer has raised the question of relating the homomorphism spaces $\Hom_{\mathfrak{S}_n}(S^μ, S^λ)$ and $\Hom_{\mathfrak{S}_{n'}}(S^{μ^+}, S^{λ^+})$, where $n'=n+kp^d$, $λ^+ =λ+(kp^{d})$, $μ^+=μ+(kp^{d})$, and $d, k$ are positive integers. We show that these are isomorphic if $p$ is odd, $p^d >\min\{λ_2, μ_1-λ_1\}$ and $μ_2 \le λ_1$.

Projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat dimension of groups

In this paper, we introduce and study the projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat dimension of a group $G$ over a commutative ring $R$ and we prove that this dimension enjoys all the properties of the cohomological and the Gorenstein cohomological dimension. We also provide good estimations for the Gorenstein global dimension of $RG$ in terms of this dimension and the Gorenstein global dimension of $R$. Moreover, we study special cases of groups, such as $\textsc{\textbf{lh}}\mathfrak{F}$-groups, and show that for such a group every Gorenstein projective $RG$-module is Gorenstein flat when the global dimension of $R$ is finite.

Finiteness criteria for Gorenstein flat dimension and stability

Projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules were introduced recently by Saroch and Stovicek and were shown to be Gorenstein projective. While the relation between Gorenstein projective and Gorenstein flat modules is not well understood, the class of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules is contained in the class of Gorenstein flat modules. This paper proves necessary and sufficient conditions for a module of finite Gorenstein flat dimension to be projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat, or of finite flat dimension. Stability results for the class of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules are also established.

Stability of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules

The stability of the class of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules, under the very Gorenstein process used to define them, is proven in this paper. Moreover, a new characterization of the projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat dimension is given.
