Group Theory Approach to Band Structure: Scarf and Lame Hamiltonians

The group theoretical treatment of bound and scattering state problems is extended to include band structure. We show that one can realize Hamiltonians with periodic potentials as dynamical symmetries, where representation theory provides analytic solutions, or which can be treated with more general spectrum generating algebraic methods. We find dynamical symmetries for which we derive the transfer matrices and dispersion relations. Both compact and non-compact groups are found to play a role.

Phase Transitions in Finite Nuclei and the Integer Nucleon Number Problem

The study of spherical-deformed ground--state phase transitions in finite nuclei as a function of N and Z is hindered by the discrete values of the nucleon number. A resolution of the integer nucleon number problem, and evidence relating to phase transitions in finite nuclei, are discussed from the experimental point of view and interpreted within the framework of the interacting boson model.

Quantum Lévy Processes and Fractional Kinetics

Exotic stochastic processes are shown to emerge in the quantum evolution of complex systems. Using influence function techniques, we consider the dynamics of a system coupled to a chaotic subsystem described through random matrix theory. We find that the reduced density matrix can display dynamics given by Lévy stable laws. The classical limit of these dynamics can be related to fractional kinetic equations. In particular we derive a fractional extension of Kramers equation.

Scaling Properties of the Giant Dipole Resonance Width in Hot Rotating nuclei

We study the systematics of the giant dipole resonance width $Γ$ in hot rotating nuclei as a function of temperature $T$, spin $J$ and mass $A$. We compare available experimental results with theoretical calculations that include thermal shape fluctuations in nuclei ranging from A=45 to A=208. Using the appropriate scaled variables, we find a simple phenomenological function $Γ(A,T,J)$ which approximates the global behavior of the giant dipole resonance width in the liquid drop model. We reanalyze recent experimental and theoretical results for the resonance width in Sn isotopes and $^{208}$Pb.

Dynamics of a Simple Quantum System in a Complex Environment

We present a theory for the dynamical evolution of a quantum system coupled to a complex many-body intrinsic system/environment. By modelling the intrinsic many-body system with parametric random matrices, we study the types of effective stochastic models which emerge from random matrix theory. Using the Feynman-Vernon path integral formalism, we derive the influence functional and obtain either analytical or numerical solutions for the time evolution of the entire quantum system. We discuss thoroughly the structure of the solutions for some representative cases and make connections to well known limiting results, particularly to Brownian motion, Kramers classical limit and the Caldeira-Leggett approach.

Turbulent-like Diffusion in Complex Quantum Systems

We study a quantum particle propagating through a ``quantum mechanically chaotic'' background, described by parametric random matrices with only short range spatial correlations. The particle is found to exhibit turbulent-like diffusion under very general situations, without the apriori introduction of power law noise or scaling in the background properties.

Universal Predictions for Statistical Nuclear Correlations

We explore the behavior of collective nuclear excitations under a multi-parameter deformation of the Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian matrix elements have the form $P(|H_{ij}|)\propto 1/\sqrt{|H_{ij}|}\exp(-|H_{ij}|/V)$, with a parametric correlation of the type $\log \langle H(x)H(y)\rangle\propto -|x-y|$. The studies are done in both the regular and chaotic regimes of the Hamiltonian. Model independent predictions for a wide variety of correlation functions and distributions which depend on wavefunctions and energies are found from parametric random matrix theory and are compared to the nuclear excitations. We find that our universal predictions are observed in the nuclear states. Being a multi-parameter theory, we consider general paths in parameter space and find that universality can be effected by the topology of the parameter space. Specifically, Berry's phase can modify short distance correlations, breaking certain universal predictions.

Quantum Dissipation

We address the question of the microscopic origin of dissipation in collective motion of a quantum many--body system in the framework of a parametric random matrix approach to the intrinsic dynamics. We show that the fluctuation--dissipation theorem is generally violated and, moreover, energy diffusion has a markedly non--Gaussian character and the corresponding distribution has very long tails. Such features do not support a Langevin or Fokker--Planck approach to dissipation in collective nuclear motion.

Levy Diffusion and Classes of Universal Parametric Correlations

A general formulation of translationally invariant, parametrically correlated random matrix ensembles, is used to classify universality in correlation functions. Surprisingly, the range of possible physical systems is bounded, and can be labeled by a parameter $α\in (0,2]$, in a manner analogous to Lévy diffusion. Universality is obtained after scaling by the (anomalous) diffusion constant $D_α$ (the usual scaling is divergent for $α<2$). For each $α$, correlation functions are universal, and distinct. The previous results in the literature correspond to the limiting case of superdiffusion, $α=2$.

Global Demons in Field Theory : Critical Slowing Down in the Xy Model

We investigate the use of global demons, a `canonical dynamics', as an approach to simulating lattice regularized field theories. This deterministically chaotic dynamics is non-local and non-Hamiltonian, and preserves the canonical measure rather than $δ(H-E)$. We apply this inexact dynamics to the 2D XY model, comparing to various implementations of hybrid Monte Carlo, focusing on critical exponents and critical slowing down. In addition, we discuss a scheme for making energy non-conserving dynamical algorithms exact without the use of a Metropolis hit.
