We show that the Poisson structure on the smooth locus of a moduli space of 1-dimensional sheaves on a Poisson projective surface $X$ over $\mathbb C$ is a reduction of a natural symplectic structure.
Bernstein-Schwarzman conjectured that the quotient of a complex affine space by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture was proved by Schwarzman and Tokunaga-Yoshida in dimension 2 for almost all such groups, and for all crystallographic reflection groups of Coxeter type by Looijenga, Bernstein-Schwarzman and Kac-Peterson in any dimension. We prove that the conjecture is true for the crystallographic reflection group in dimension 3 for which the associated collineation group is Klein's simple group of order 168. In this case the quotient is the 3-dimensional weighted projective space with weights 1, 2, 4, 7. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the algebra of invariant theta functions. Unlike the Coxeter case, the invariant algebra is not free polynomial, and this was the major stumbling block.
Klein's simple group $H$ of order $168$ is the automorphism group of the plane quartic curve $C$, called Klein quartic. By Torelli Theorem, the full automorphism group $G$ of the Jacobian $J=J(C)$ is the group of order $336$, obtained by adding minus identity to $H$. The quotient variety $J/G$ can be alternatively represented as the quotient $\mathbb C^3/\tilde G$ of the complex $3$-space by the complex crystallographic group $\tilde G$, the extension of $G$ by the period lattice of the Klein quartic. Moreover, it turns out that $\tilde G$ is generated by affine complex reflections. According to a conjecture of Bernstein--Schwarzman, a quotient of $\mathbb C^n$ by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture is known in dimension two and for complexifications of the real crystallographic groups generated by reflections. The case of $\tilde G$ is the first, and in a sense the smallest of the unknown cases. We compute the orbits and the stabilizers of the action of $G$ on $J$ and deduce that $J/G=\mathbf C^3/\tilde G$ is a strongly simply connected variety with the same singularities as the weighted projective space $\mathbb P(1,2,4,7)$.
The Fano models of Enriques surfaces produce a family of tens of mutually intersecting planes in $\mathbf P^5$ with a $10$-dimensional moduli space. The latter is linked to several 10-dimensional moduli spaces parametrizing other types of objects: a) cubic fourfolds containing the tens of planes, b) Beauville--Donagi holomorphically symplectic fourfolds, and c) double EPW sextics. The varieties in b) parametrize lines on cubic fourfolds from a). The double EPW sextics are associated, via O'Grady's construction, to Lagrangian subspaces of the Pl\"ucker space of the Grassmannian $Gr(2,\mathbf P^5)$ spanned by 10 mutually intersecting planes in $\mathbf P^5$. These links imply the irreducibility of the moduli space of supermarked Enriques surfaces, where a supermarking is a choice of a minimal generating system of the Picard group of the surface. Also some results are obtained on the variety of tens of mutually intersecting planes, not necessarily associated to Fano models of Enriques surfaces.
As a continuation of a general program started in two previous publications, in the present paper we study the K\"ahler quotient resolution of the orbifold $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_4$, comparing with the results of a toric description of the same. In this way we determine the algebraic structure of the exceptional divisor, whose compact component is the second Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb F_2$. We determine the explicit K\"ahler geometry of the smooth resolved manifold $Y$, which is the total space of the canonical bundle of $\mathbb F_2$. We study in detail the chamber structure of the space of stability parameters (corresponding in gauge theory to the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters) that are involved in the construction of the desingularizations either by generalized Kronheimer quotient, or as algebro-geometric quotients. The walls of the chambers correspond to two degenerations; one is a partial desingularization of the quotient, which is the total space of the canonical bundle of the weighted projective space $\mathbb P[1,1,2]$, while the other is the product of the ALE space $A_1$ by a line, and is related to the full resolution in a subtler way. These geometrical results will be used to look for exact supergravity brane solutions and dual superconformal gauge theories.
We investigate the interplay between the moduli spaces of ample <2>-polarized IHS manifolds of type K3^[2] and of IHS manifolds of type K3^[2] with a nonsymplectic involution with invariant lattice of rank one. In particular we geometrically describe some new involutions of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface, whose existence was proven in a previous work of Boissiere, Cattaneo, Nieper-Wisskirchen and Sarti.
An arithmetic method of proving the irrationality of smooth projective 3-folds is described, using reduction modulo $p$. It is illustrated by an application to a cubic threefold, for which the hypothesis that its intermediate Jacobian is isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve is contradicted by reducing modulo 3 and counting points over appropriate extensions of $\mathbb F_3$. As a spin-off, it is shown that the 5-dimensional Prym varieties arising as intermediate Jacobians of certain cubic 3-folds have the maximal number of points over $\mathbb F_q$ which attains Perret's and Weil's upper bounds.
We describe new components of the Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of semistable rank 2 sheaves $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $c_1(E)=0$, $c_2(E)=n$ and $c_3(E)=0$ whose generic point corresponds to non locally free sheaves. We show that such components grow in number as $n$ grows, and discuss how they intersect the instanton component. As an application, we prove that $\mathcal{M}(2)$ is connected, and identify a connected subscheme of $\mathcal{M}(3)$ consisting of 7 irreducible components.
Let ${\mathcal I}(n)$ denote the moduli space of rank $2$ instanton bundles of charge $n$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$. We know from several authors that ${\mathcal I}(n)$ is an irreducible, nonsingular and affine variety of dimension $8n-3$. Since every rank $2$ instanton bundle on ${\mathbb P}^3$ is stable, we may regard ${\mathcal I}(n)$ as an open subset of the projective Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme ${\mathcal M}(n)$ of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves $F$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$ with Chern classes $c_1=c_3=0$ and $c_2=n$, and consider the closure $\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}$ of ${\mathcal I}(n)$ in ${\mathcal M}(n)$. We construct some of the irreducible components of dimension $8n-4$ of the boundary $\partial{\mathcal I}(n):=\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}\setminus{\mathcal I}(n)$. These components generically lie in the smooth locus of ${\mathcal M}(n)$ and consist of rank $2$ torsion free instanton sheaves with singularities along rational curves.
We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r+1,\ n-r\equiv 1(\mathrm{mod}2)$. We introduce the notion of tame symplectic instantons by excluding a kind of pathological monads and show that the locus $I^*_{n,r}$ of tame symplectic instantons is irreducible and has the expected dimension, equal to $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$. The proof is inherently based on a relation between the spaces $I^*_{n,r}$ and the moduli spaces of 't Hooft instantons
We construct a compactification $M^{\mu ss}$ of the Uhlenbeck-Donaldson type for the moduli space of slope stable framed bundles. This is a kind of a moduli space of slope semistable framed sheaves. We show that there exists a projective morphism $\gamma \colon M^{ss} \to M^{\mu ss}$, where $M^{ss}$ is the moduli space of S-equivalence classes of Gieseker-semistable framed sheaves. The space $M^{\mu ss}$ has a natural set-theoretic stratification which allows one, via a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence, to compare it with the moduli spaces of framed ideal instantons.
We show that there exists a fine moduli space for torsion-free sheaves on a projective surface, which have a "good framing" on a big and nef divisor. This moduli space is a quasi-projective scheme. This is accomplished by showing that such framed sheaves may be considered as stable pairs in the sense of Huybrechts and Lehn. We characterize the obstruction to the smoothness of the moduli space, and discuss some examples on rational surfaces.
Given a K3 surface S, we show that the relative intermediate Jacobian of the universal family of Fano 3-folds V containing S as an anticanonical divisor is a Lagrangian fibration. The proof uses variations of the mixed Hodge structure of the pair (V,S).
According to Mukai, any prime Fano threefold X of genus 7 is a linear section of the spinor tenfold in the projectivized half-spinor space of Spin(10). The orthogonal linear section of the spinor tenfold is a canonical genus-7 curve G, and the intermediate Jacobian J(X) is isomorphic to the Jacobian of G. It is proven that, for a generic X, the Abel-Jacobi map of the family of elliptic sextics on X factors through the moduli space of rank-2 vector bundles with c_1=-K_X and deg c_2=6 and that the latter is birational to the singular locus of the theta divisor of J(X).
Several curves of genus 2 are known, such that the equations of motion of the Kowalewski top are linearized on their Jacobians. One can expect from transcendental approaches via solutions of equations of motion in theta-functions, that their Jacobians are isogeneous. The paper focuses on two such curves: Kowalewski's and that of Bobenko-Reyman-Semenov-Tian-Shansky, the latter arising from the solution of the problem by the method of spectral curves. An isogeny is established between the Jacobians of these curves by purely algebraic means, using Richelot's transformation of a genus 2 curve. It is shown that this isogeny respects the Hamiltonian flows. The two curves are completed into an infinite tower of genus 2 curves with isogeneous Jacobians.
