The MIP Workshop 2023 Computational Competition on Reoptimization

This paper describes the computational challenge developed for a computational competition held in 2023 for the $20^{\textrm{th}}$ anniversary of the Mixed Integer Programming Workshop. The topic of this competition was reoptimization, also known as warm starting, of mixed integer linear optimization problems after slight changes to the input data for a common formulation. The challenge was to accelerate the proof of optimality of the modified instances by leveraging the information from the solving processes of previously solved instances, all while creating high-quality primal solutions. Specifically, we discuss the competition's format, the creation of public and hidden datasets, and the evaluation criteria. Our goal is to establish a methodology for the generation of benchmark instances and an evaluation framework, along with benchmark datasets, to foster future research on reoptimization of mixed integer linear optimization problems.

e4clim 1.0 : The Energy for CLimate Integrated Model: Description and Application to Italy

We develop an open-source Python software integrating flexibility needs from Variable Renewable Energies (VREs) in the development of regional energy mixes. It provides a flexible and extensible tool to researchers/engineers, and for education/outreach. It aims at evaluating and optimizing energy deployment strategies with high shares of VRE; assessing the impact of new technologies and of climate variability; conducting sensitivity studies. Specifically, to limit the algorithm's complexity, we avoid solving a full-mix cost-minimization problem by taking the mean and variance of the renewable production-demand ratio as proxies to balance services. Second, observations of VRE technologies being typically too short or nonexistent, the hourly demand and production are estimated from climate time-series and fitted to available observations. We illustrate e4clim's potential with an optimal recommissioning-study of the 2015 Italian PV-wind mix testing different climate-data sources and strategies and assessing the impact of climate variability and the robustness of the results.

Preference-based Energy Exchange in a Network of Microgrids

Peer-to-peer energy trading is emerging as a new paradigm that in the near future may disrupt conventional electricity markets and heavily affect energy exchanges in networks of microgrids. In this paper, a preference mechanism is considered to compute optimal energy exchanges in a network of microgrids with or without the supervision of the distribution system operator, and the alternating direction method of multipliers is adopted for its distributed solution. The effect of the preference mechanism on the resulting power flow in the network is further studied and discussed for realistic case studies. Results show that a desired power flow in the network of interconnected microgrids can be achieved with different preference values locally chosen or imposed by the system operator. In particular, appropriate preferences may be used to give rise to different clusters of microgrids and reduce energy exchanges between different clusters.
