Cosmology of the string derived flipped $SU(5)$

We study the cosmology of a string derived supersymmetric flipped $SU(5)$ model in the context of free-fermionic heterotic constructions that allow full calculability of the effective supergravity in perturbation theory around the fermionic vacuum where all string moduli have fixed values. The model has 3 generations of chiral families and a Higgs sector leading to particle phenomenology consistent with low energy data, that has been extensively studied in the past. Here, we show that it can also accommodate a novel successful cosmology, based on the no-scale effective supergravity derived from string theory as well as an appropriate induced superpotential suppressed by five powers of the string scale. It utilises two gauge singlet chiral superfields present in the low energy spectrum: the inflaton $y$, identified as the superpartner of a state mixed with R-handed neutrinos, and the goldstino $z$ with a superpotential of the form $W_I=M_I z(y-λy^2)$ (in supergravity units) where $λ$ is a dimensionless ${\cal O}\left(1\right)$ parameter and $M_I$ the mass scale of inflation generated at 5th order by the breaking of an anomalous $U(1)_A$ gauge symmetry, characteristic of heterotic string chiral vacua. The resulting scalar potential leads to Starobinsky type inflation. Our results can be easily generalised to a large class of models with similar properties.

Primordial Black Holes from No-Scale Supergravity

We calculate the primordial black hole abundance in the context of a Wess-Zumino type no-scale supergravity model. We modify the Kähler potential, by adding an extra exponential term. Using just one parameter in the context of this model, we are able to satisfy the Planck cosmological constraints for the spectral index $n_s$, the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, and to produce up to $\sim 20\%$ of the dark matter of the Universe in the form of primordial black holes.

Building Models of Inflation in No-Scale Supergravity

After reviewing the motivations for cosmological inflation formulated in the formalism of supersymmetry, we argue that the appropriate framework is that of no-scale supergravity. We then show how to construct within this framework inflationary models whose predictions for the tilt in the spectrum of scalar perturbations, $n_s$, and the ratio, $r$, of tensor and scalar perturbations coincide with those of the $R + R^2$ model of inflation proposed by Starobinsky. A more detailed study of no-scale supergravity reveals a structure that is closely related to that of $R^2$ modifications of the minimal Einstein-Hilbert action for general relativity, opening avenues for constructing no-scale de Sitter and anti-de Sitter models by combining pairs of Minkowski models, as well as generalizations of the original no-scale Starobinsky models of inflation. We then discuss the phenomenology of no-scale models of inflation, including inflaton decay and reheating, and then the construction of explicit scenarios based on SU(5), SO(10) and string-motivated flipped SU(5)$\times$U(1) GUT models. The latter provides a possible model of almost everything below the Planck scale, including neutrino masses and oscillations, the cosmological baryon asymmetry and cold dark matter, as well as $n_s$ and $r$.

Phenomenology and Cosmology of No-Scale Attractor Models of Inflation

We have recently proposed attractor models for modulus fixing, inflation, supersymmetry breaking and dark energy based on no-scale supergravity. In this paper we develop phenomenological and cosmological aspects of these no-scale attractor models that underpin their physical applications. We consider models in which inflation is driven by a modulus field ($T$-type) with supersymmetry broken by a Polonyi field, or a matter field ($ϕ$-type) with supersymmetry broken by the modulus field. We derive the possible patterns of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms, which depend in $T$-type models whether the Polonyi and/or matter fields are twisted or not, and in $ϕ$-type models on whether the inflaton and/or other matter fields are twisted or not. In $ϕ$-type models, we are able to directly relate the scale of supersymmetry breaking to the inflaton mass. We also discuss cosmological constraints from entropy considerations and the density of dark matter on the mechanism for stabilizing the modulus field via higher-order terms in the no-scale Kähler potential.

Proton Decay: Flipped vs Unflipped SU(5)

We analyze nucleon decay modes in a no-scale supersymmetric flipped SU(5) GUT model, and contrast them with the predictions for proton decays via dimension-6 operators in a standard unflipped supersymmetric SU(5) GUT model. We find that these GUT models make very different predictions for the ratios $Γ(p \to π^0 μ^+)/Γ(p \to π^0 e^+)$, $Γ(p \to π^+ \barν)/Γ(p \to π^0 e^+)$, $Γ(p \to K^0 e^+)/Γ(p \to π^0 e^+)$ and $Γ(p \to K^0 μ^+)/Γ(p \to π^0 μ^+)$, and that predictions for the ratios $Γ(p \to π^0 μ^+)/Γ(p \to π^0 e^+)$ and $Γ(p \to π^+ \barν)/Γ(p \to π^0 e^+)$ also differ in variants of the flipped SU(5) model with normal- or inverse-ordered light neutrino masses. Upcoming large neutrino experiments may have interesting opportunities to explore both GUT and flavour physics in proton and neutron decays.

Superstring-Inspired Particle Cosmology: Inflation, Neutrino Masses, Leptogenesis, Dark Matter & the SUSY Scale

We develop a string-inspired model for particle cosmology, based on a flipped SU(5)$\times$U(1) gauge group formulated in a no-scale supergravity framework. The model realizes Starobinsky-like inflation, which we assume to be followed by strong reheating, with the GUT symmetry being broken subsequently by a light `flaton' field whose decay generates a second stage of reheating. We discuss the production of gravitinos and the non-thermal contribution made by their decays to the density of cold dark matter, which is assumed to be provided by the lightest neutralino. We also discuss the masses of light and heavy neutrinos and leptogenesis. As discussed previously [1], a key rôle is played by a superpotential coupling between the inflaton, matter and GUT Higgs fields, called $λ_6$. We scan over possible values of $λ_6$, exploring the correlations between the possible values of observables. We emphasize that the release of entropy during the GUT transition allows large regions of supersymmetry-breaking parameter space that would otherwise lead to severe overdensity of dark matter. Furthermore, we find that the Big Bang nucleosynthesis lower limit on the reheating temperature of $\sim 1$ MeV restricts the supersymmetry-breaking scale to a range ${\cal O}(10)$ TeV that is consistent with the absence of supersymmetric particles at the LHC.

The Heavy Gluino in Natural No-Scale $\cal{F}$-$SU$(5)

In light of recent 80-137 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ results at the LHC Run 2 establishing a lower gluino mass limit of 2.25 TeV, we revisit the supersymmetric GUT model Flipped $SU$(5) with extra vector-like particles, known as $\cal{F}$-$SU$(5), with vanishing No-Scale Supergravity boundary conditions at the string scale of about $2 \times 10^{17}$ GeV, including the supersymmetry breaking $B_μ$ parameter which is strictly enforced as $B_μ = 0$. Given the proportional dependence of all model scales on a single parameter $M_{1/2}$, No-Scale $\cal{F}$-$SU$(5) was shown to possess no electroweak fine-tuning and thus persists as a $natural$ one-parameter model. In this fresh analysis here, we demand consistency with the measured 125 GeV light Higgs boson mass, though we forgo an upper limit on the lightest neutralino relic density. The resulting phenomenology delivers a gluino mass of $M(\widetilde{g}) \lesssim 7.5$ TeV and a lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) of $M(\widetildeχ_1^0) \lesssim 1.6$ TeV. In order to dilute the relic density down to the WMAP and Planck measurements, we rely upon a single cosmological master coupling $λ_6$.

A General Classification of Starobinsky-like Inflationary Avatars of SU(2,1)/SU(2) x U(1) No-Scale Supergravity

Measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) favour models of inflation with a small tensor-to-scalar ratio r, as predicted by the Starobinsky R + R^2 model. It has been shown previously that various models based on no-scale supergravity with different forms of superpotential make predictions similar to those of the Starobinsky model. In this paper we present a unified and general treatment of Starobinsky avatars of no-scale supergravity, using the underlying non-compact SU(2,1)/SU(2) x U(1) symmetry to demonstrate equivalences between different models, exhibiting 6 specific equivalence classes.

From Minkowski to de Sitter in Multifield No-Scale Models

We show the uniqueness of superpotentials leading to Minkowski vacua of single-field no-scale supergravity models, and the construction of dS/AdS solutions using pairs of these single-field Minkowski superpotentials. We then extend the construction to two- and multifield no-scale supergravity models, providing also a geometrical interpretation. We also consider scenarios with additional twisted or untwisted moduli fields, and discuss how inflationary models can be constructed in this framework.

Naturalness in D-brane Inspired Models

We examine the naturalness of the D-brane inspired model constructed in flipped $SU(5)$ supplemented with vector-like particles at the TeV scale, dubbed flippons. We find the model can produce a mainly Higgsino-like lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and small light stops, as favored by naturalness. In fact, a large trilinear scalar $A_t$ term at the electroweak (EW) scale creates a large mass splitting between the top squarks, driving the light stop to near degeneracy with an LSP that is almost all Higgsino, with $ΔM(\widetilde{t}_1, \widetildeχ_1^0) < 5$ GeV, evading the LHC constraint on $\widetilde{t}_1 \to c \widetildeχ_1^0$ thus far. Given the smallness of the light stop, generating a 125 GeV light Higgs boson mass is aided by one-loop contributions from the Yukawa couplings between the flippons and Higgs fields. The resulting parameter space satisfying naturalness is rather constrained, thus we assess its viability by means of comparison to the LHC constraint on soft charm jets and direction detection limits on spin-independent cross-sections. Finally, we compute the level of electroweak fine-tuning and uncover a region with $Δ_{EW} < 30$, $i.e.$, fine-tuning better than 3%, regarded as low electroweak fine-tuning. Given the small light stop, the electroweak fine-tuning from only the top squarks is of $\cal{O}$(1), indicating no fine-tuning from neither the light stop $\widetilde{t}_1$ nor the heavy stop $\widetilde{t}_2$.

Unified No-Scale Attractors

We have presented previously a general treatment of Starobinsky-like inflation in no-scale supergravity where the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r = 3(1 - n_s)^2$, and $n_s$ is the tilt of the scalar perturbations. In particular, we have shown how this scenario can be unified with modulus fixing, supersymmetry breaking and a small cosmological constant. In this paper we extend these constructions to inflationary models based on generalized no-scale structures. In particular, we consider alternative values of the curvature parameter, $α< 1$, as may occur if not all the complex Kähler moduli contribute to driving inflation, as well as $α> 1$, as may occur if complex structure moduli also contribute to driving inflation. In all cases, we combine these $α$-Starobinsky inflation models with supersymmetry breaking and a present-day cosmological constant, allowing for additional contributions to the vacuum energy from stages of gauge symmetry breaking.

Cosmology with a Master Coupling in Flipped SU(5) $\times$ U(1): The $λ_6$ Universe

We propose a complete cosmological scenario based on a flipped SU(5) $\times$ U(1) GUT model that incorporates Starobinsky-like inflation, taking the subsequent cosmological evolution carefully into account. A single master coupling, $λ_6$, connects the singlet, GUT Higgs and matter fields, controlling 1) inflaton decays and reheating, 2) the gravitino production rate and therefore the non-thermal abundance of the supersymmetric cold dark matter particle, 3) neutrino masses and 4) the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Symmetry Breaking and Reheating after Inflation in No-Scale Flipped SU(5)

No-scale supergravity and the flipped SU(5)$\times$U(1) gauge group provide an ambitious prototype string-inspired scenario for physics below the string scale, which can accommodate the Starobinsky-like inflation favoured by observation when the inflaton is associated with one of the singlet fields associated with neutrino mass generation. During inflation, the vacuum remains in the unbroken GUT phase, and GUT symmetry breaking occurs later when a field with a flat direction (the flaton) acquires a vacuum expectation value. Inflaton decay and the reheating process depend crucially on GUT symmetry breaking, as decay channels open and close, depending on the value of the flaton vacuum expectation value. Here, we consider the simultaneous cosmological evolution of both the inflaton and flaton fields after inflation. We distinguish weak, moderate and strong reheating regimes, and calculate in each case the entropy produced as all fields settle to their global minima. These three reheating scenarios differ in the value of a Yukawa coupling that introduces mass mixing between the singlets and the ${\bf 10}$s of SU(5). The dynamics of the GUT transition has an important impact on the production of gravitinos, and we also discuss the pattern of neutrino masses we expect in each of the three cases. Finally, we use recent CMB limits on neutrino masses to constrain the reheating models, finding that neutrino masses and the cosmological baryon asymmetry can both be explained if the reheating is strong.

Constraining D-foam via the 21-cm Line

We have suggested earlier that D-particles, which are stringy space-time defects predicted in brane-inspired models of the Universe, might constitute a component of dark matter, and that they might contribute to the masses of singlet fermions that could provide another component. Interactions of the quantum-fluctuating D-particles with matter induce vector forces that are mediated by a massless effective U(1) gauge field, the "D-photon", which is distinct from the ordinary photon and has different properties from dark photons. We discuss the form of interactions of D-matter with conventional matter induced by D-photon exchange and calculate their strength, which depends on the density of D-particles. Observations of the hydrogen 21~cm line at redshifts >= 15 can constrain these interactions and the density of D-matter in the early Universe.

De Sitter Vacua in No-Scale Supergravity

No-scale supergravity is the appropriate general framework for low-energy effective field theories derived from string theory. The simplest no-scale Kähler potential with a single chiral field corresponds to a compactification to flat Minkowski space with a single volume modulus, but generalizations to single-field no-scale models with de Sitter vacua are also known. In this paper we generalize these de Sitter constructions to two- and multi-field models of the types occurring in string compactifications with more than one relevant modulus. We discuss the conditions for stability of the de Sitter solutions and holomorphy of the superpotential, and give examples whose superpotential contains only integer powers of the chiral fields.

Inspiration from Intersecting D-branes: General Supersymmetry Breaking Soft Terms in No-Scale ${\cal F}$-$SU(5)$

Motivated by D-brane model building, we evaluate the $\cal{F}$-$SU(5)$ model with additional vector-like particle multiplets, referred to as flippons, within the framework of No-Scale Supergravity with non-vanishing general supersymmetry breaking soft terms at the string scale. The viable phenomenology is uncovered by applying all current experimental constraints, including but not limited to the correct light Higgs boson mass, WMAP and Planck relic density measurements, and several LHC constraints on supersymmetric particle spectra. Four interesting regions of the parameter space arise, as well as mixed scenarios, given by: (i) light stop coannihilation; (ii) pure Higgsino dark matter; (iii) Higgs funnel; and (iv) light stau coannihilation. All regions can generate the observed value of the relic density commensurate with a 125 GeV light Higgs boson mass, with the exception of the relatively small relic density value for the pure Higgsino lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). This work is concluded by gauging the model against present LHC search constraints and derivation of the final states observable at the LHC for each of these scenarios.

From $R^2$ Gravity to No-Scale Supergravity

We show that $R^2$ gravity coupled conformally to scalar fields is equivalent to the real bosonic sector of SU(N,1)/SU(N)$\times$U(1) no-scale supergravity, where the conformal factor can be identified with the Kähler potential, and we review the construction of Starobinsky-like models of inflation within this framework.
