$c$-Theorem for Anisotropic RG Flows from Holographic Entanglement Entropy

We propose a candidate $c$-function in arbitrary dimensional quantum field theories with broken Lorentz and rotational symmetry. For holographic theories we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometric background for these $c$-functions to satisfy the $c$-theorem. We obtain the null energy conditions for anisotropic background to show that do not themselves assure the $c$-theorem. By employing them, we find that is possible to impose conditions on the UV data that are enough to guarantee at least one monotonic $c$-function along the RG flow. These UV conditions can be used as building blocks for the construction of anisotropic monotonic RG flows. Finally, we apply our results to several known anisotropic theories and identify the region in the parameters space of the metric where the $c$-theorem holds for our proposed $c$-function.

Thermodynamics and Feature Extraction by Machine Learning

Machine learning methods are powerful in distinguishing different phases of matter in an automated way and provide a new perspective on the study of physical phenomena. We train a Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) on data constructed with spin configurations sampled from the Ising Hamiltonian at different values of temperature and external magnetic field using Monte Carlo methods. From the trained machine we obtain the flow of iterative reconstruction of spin state configurations to faithfully reproduce the observables of the physical system. We find that the flow of the trained RBM approaches the spin configurations of the maximal possible specific heat which resemble the near criticality region of the Ising model. In the special case of the vanishing magnetic field the trained RBM converges to the critical point of the Renormalization Group (RG) flow of the lattice model. Our results suggest an alternative explanation of how the machine identifies the physical phase transitions, by recognizing certain properties of the configuration like the maximization of the specific heat, instead of associating directly the recognition procedure with the RG flow and its fixed points. Then from the reconstructed data we deduce the critical exponent associated to the magnetization to find satisfactory agreement with the actual physical value. We assume no prior knowledge about the criticality of the system and its Hamiltonian.

Strongly-coupled anisotropic gauge theories and holography

We initiate a non-perturbative study of anisotropic, non-conformal and confining gauge theories that are holographically realized in gravity by generic Einstein-Axion-Dilaton systems. In the vacuum our solutions describe RG flows from a conformal field theory in the UV to generic scaling solutions in the IR with generic hyperscaling violation and dynamical exponents $θ$ and $z$. We formulate a generalization of the holographic c-theorem to the anisotropic case. At finite temperature, we discover that the anisotropic deformation reduces the confinement-deconfinement phase transition temperature suggesting a possible alternative explanation of inverse magnetic catalysis solely based on anisotropy. We also study transport and diffusion properties in anisotropic theories and observe in particular that the butterfly velocity that characterizes both diffusion and growth of chaos transverse to the anisotropic direction, saturates a constant value in the IR which can exceed the bound given by the conformal value.

Baryons under Strong Magnetic Fields or in Theories with Space-dependent $θ$-term

Baryonic states are sufficiently complex to reveal physics that is hidden in the mesonic bound states. Using gauge/gravity correspondence we study analytically and numerically baryons in theories with space-dependent $θ$-term, or theories under strong magnetic fields. Such holographic studies on baryons are accommodated in a generic analytic framework we develop for anisotropic theories, where their qualitative features are common irrespective of the source that triggers the anisotropy. We find that the distribution of the quarks forming the state, depends on the angle between the baryon and the anisotropic direction. Its shape is increasingly elliptic with respect to the strength of the field sourcing the anisotropy, counterbalancing the broken rotational invariance on the gluonic degrees of freedom. Strikingly, the baryons dissociate in stages with a process that depends on the proximity of the quarks to the anisotropic direction, where certain quark pairs abandon the bound state first, followed by the closest pairs to them as the temperature increases. This observation may also serve as a way to identify the nature of certain exotic states. Finally, we investigate holographic baryons with decreased number of quarks and explain why in theories under consideration the presence of anisotropy does not modify the universal stability condition in contrast to the usual trend.

Stochastic Motion of Heavy Quarks in Holography: A Theory-Independent Treatment

Stochastic dynamics play a central role in strongly coupled phenomena. We present and review a theory independent approach in holography to study such phenomena. We firstly argue that the heavy quark diffusion occurs in realistic strongly coupled systems. Then we analyze the quantum and thermal fluctuation, dissipation and the corresponding Brownian motion of a heavy particle in such environments for a wide class of theories. The holographic study is based on the properties of the straight string fluctuations. The observables and coefficients associated with the stochastic motion depend on a single parameter which encodes the properties of the different theories. Moreover, certain Dp-brane fluctuations can be mapped one-to-one to the string fluctuations and therefore the stochastic brane observables can be read from the string ones. Then we review the Langevin diffusion of a moving heavy quark in generic thermal holographic theories. The analysis is based on the properties of the trailing string and its fluctuations. The string world-sheet has a black hole horizon and the quark feels an effective temperature different than the environmental one. The formulas of the effective temperature, the drag force on the particle and the Langevin coefficients are given in terms of the background metric elements readily applicable to any theory. At the end we comment on the backreaction effects on the medium and present results of the Monte Carlo simulations.

Quantum Fluctuation and Dissipation in Holographic Theories: A Unifying Study Scheme

Motivated by the wide range of applicability of the fluctuation and dissipation phenomena in non-equilibrium systems, we provide a universal study scheme for the dissipation of the energy and the corresponding Brownian motion analysis of massive particles due to quantum and thermal fluctuations in a wide class of strongly coupled quantum field theories. The underlying reason for the existence of such unified study scheme, is that our analytic methods turn out to heavily depend on the order of the Bessel functions $ν$, describing the string fluctuations attached to the particle. Different values of the order are associated to different theories. The two-point function of the fluctuations exhibits two different late time behaviors, depending purely on the value of the order of Bessel functions. We then find that the coefficients and observables associated with the stochastic motion at zero and finite temperature, depend on the scales of the theory through powers of the order $ν$. Moreover, the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is verified from the bulk perspective to be universally satisfied for the whole class of theories. Finally, we show that the analysis of certain types of Dp-brane fluctuations can be mapped one-to-one to the string fluctuations and therefore the stochastic brane observables can be read from the string ones. In the closing remarks we demonstrate how our analysis accommodates known results as special cases and provide more applications.

Non-integrability and Chaos with Unquenched Flavor

We study (non-)integrability and the presence of chaos in gravity dual backgrounds of strongly coupled gauge theories with unquenched flavor, specifically of the four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills theory and the three-dimensional ABJM theory. By examining string motion on the geometries corresponding to backreacted D3/D7 and D2/D6 systems, we show that integrable theories with quenched flavor become non-integrable when the virtual quark loops are taken into account. For the string solutions in the backreacted D3/D7 system, we compute the leading Lyapunov exponent which turns out to saturate to a positive value as the number of flavors increases. The exponent depends very weakly on the number of flavors when they approach the number of colors. This suggests that once a particular flavor number in the theory is reached, a further increase does not lead to more severe chaotic phenomena, implying certain saturation effects on chaos.

Towards Holographic Quantum Energy Teleportation

We propose a simplified protocol of quantum energy teleportation (QET) for holographic conformal field theory (CFT) in 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with or without black hole. As a tentative proposal, we simplify the standard QET by replacing Alice's local measurement with the local projection, which excites the system from ground state into a particular state dual to a Banados geometry. We then mimic Bob's local operation of the usual QET for extracting energy by deforming the UV surface with a local bump. Adopting the surface/state duality this deformation corresponds to local unitary. We evaluate the extraction of energy from the holographic stress tensor, and find that Bob always gains energy extraction in our protocol. This could be related to the positive energy theorem of the dual gravity. Moreover, the ratio of extraction energy to injection one is a universal function of the UV surface deformation profile.

The Thermal Bath of de Sitter from Holography

We consider the AdS/dS CFT correspondence and study the nature of the thermal bath of the de Sitter field theory using holography. Unlike the temperature of a thermal field theory in flat spacetime, the temperature of a superconformal field theory on de Sitter space is an integral part of the theory and leaves intact the conformal symmetry and supersymmetry. In the dual AdS side, there is no black hole. Instead we have cosmological expansion of the de Sitter factor. We consider a number of different observables, such as the entanglement entropy, two point correlation function, Wilson loops corresponding to static and spinning mesons in the field theory, and study their thermal properties using holography. The former two quantities have trivial temperature dependence due to conformal symmetry. We compute the energy of the quark anti-quark bound state for a static meson, as well as the energy and the angular momentum for a spinning meson. We find that there is a maximum distance, as well as a maximum spin for the latter case, beyond which the bound state become unstable. The temperature behavior of the physical quantities in these meson systems are similar to that of the usual thermal field theory with holographic black hole dual. With these examples, we show clearly how the field theory observables get their thermal properties from the bulk despite the absence of a black hole, with the role of the black hole horizon played by the cosmological expansion of the de Sitter factor of the AdS metric.

AdS/dS CFT Correspondence

We propose and study a holographic dual of the type IIB superstring theory of AdS_5 x S^5 in terms of the N=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory on dS_4. We use the bulk to boundary formalism to evaluate the boundary correlation functions and verify that it agrees with the expected result in dS conformal field theory. The gauge theory is expected to be UV finite and enjoy exact SL(2,Z) strong-weak duality. As the string theory Green-Schwarz sigma model carries an infinite number of classically conserved charges, it also suggest that the superconformal Yang-Mills theory is integrable and deserves further studies.

Properties of Confinement in Holography

We review certain properties of confinement with added focus on the ones we study with holography. Then we discuss observables whose unique behavior can indicate the presence of confinement. Using mainly the Wilson loop in the gauge/gravity formalism, we study two main features of the QCD string: the string tension dependence on the temperature while in the confining phase, and the logarithmic broadening of the flux tube between the heavy static charges that turns out to be a generic property of all confining theories. Finally, we review the k-string bound state and we show that for a wide class of generic theories the k-string observables can be expressed in terms of the single meson bound state observables.

k-Strings as Fundamental Strings

It has been noticed that the k-string observables can be expressed in terms of the fundamental string ones. We identify a sufficient condition for a generic gravity dual background which when satisfied the mapping can be done. The condition is naturally related to a preserved quantity under the T-dualities acting on the Dp-brane describing the high representation Wilson loops. We also find the explicit relation between the observables of the heavy k-quark and the single quark states. As an application to our generic study and motivated by the fact that the anisotropic theories satisfy our condition, we compute the width of the k-string in these theories to find that the logarithmic broadening is still present, but the total result is affected by the anisotropy of the space.

On the holographic width of flux tubes

We investigate the width of the flux tube between heavy static quark charges. Using the gauge/gravity duality, we find the properties of the minimal connected surface related to the width of the bound state. We show that in the confining phase, the logarithmic broadening predicted by the effective string description and observed in lattice simulations is a generic property of all confining backgrounds. We also study the transverse fluctuations of the string connecting two static quarks in curved backgrounds. Our formalism is applied to AdS space where we compute the expectation value of the square of transverse deviations of the string, a quantity related to the width.

Tension of Confining Strings at Low Temperature

In the low temperature confining phase of QCD or QCD-like theories it is challenging to capture the temperature dependence of observables through AdS/CFT. Using the blackfold approach we compute the quark-antiquark linear static potential in the low temperature confining phase, taking into account the thermal excitations of the string. We find the explicit temperature dependence of the string tension and notice that, as naturally expected, tension decreases as temperature increases. We have also generalized the blackfold approach for the computation of the Wilson loops, making it directly applicable to a large class of backgrounds.

Non-integrability in non-relativistic theories

Generic non-relativistic theories giving rise to non-integrable string solutions are classified. Our analysis boils down to a simple algebraic condition for the scaling parameters of the metric. Particular cases are the Lifshitz and the anisotropic Lifshitz spacetimes, for which we find that for trivial dilaton dependence the only integrable physical theory is that for z=1. For the hyperscaling violation theories we conclude that the vast majority of theories are non-integrable, while only for a small class of physical theories, where the Fermi surfaces belong to, integrability is not excluded. Schrodinger theories are also analyzed and a necessary condition for non-integrability is found. Our analysis is also applied to cases where the exponential of the dilaton is a monomial of the holographic coordinate.

Universal Properties of the Langevin Diffusion Coefficients

We show that in generic isotropic holographic theories the longitudinal Langevin diffusion coefficient along the string motion is larger compared to that of the transverse direction. We argue that this is a universal relation and we derive the generic conditions in order to be satisfied. A way to violate the relation is to consider anisotropic gauge/gravity dualities. We give an explicit example of this violation where the noise along the transverse direction is larger than the noise occurring along the quark motion. Moreover, we derive the effective world-sheet temperature for any generic theory and then the conditions for negative excess noise. We argue that isotropic theories can not have negative excess noise and we additionally remark that these conditions are difficult to get satisfied, indicating positivity of the excess noise, even in a large class of anisotropic holographic theories.

Observables in Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Theories

We review certain anisotropic gauge/gravity dualities, focusing more on a theory with space dependent axion term. Then we discuss and also present some new results for several observables: the static potential and force, the imaginary part of the static potential, the quark dipole in the plasma wind, the drag force and diffusion time, the jet quenching of heavy and light quarks, the energy loss of rotating quarks, the photon production and finally the violation of the holographic viscosity over entropy bound. The corresponding weakly coupled results are also discussed. Finally we investigate the bounds of the parameters of the current strongly coupled anisotropic theories attempting to match them with the observed quark-gluon plasma and report the problems appear.

Heavy Quark Diffusion in Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Plasmas

We study the Langevin diffusion of a relativistic heavy quark in anisotropic strongly coupled theories in the local limit. Firstly, we use the axion space-dependent deformed anisotropic N=4 sYM, where the geometry anisotropy is always prolate, while the pressure anisotropy may be prolate or oblate. For motion along the anisotropic direction we find that the effective temperature for the quark can be larger than the heat bath temperature, in contrast to what happens in the isotropic theory. The longitudinal and transverse Langevin diffusion coefficients depend strongly on the anisotropy, the direction of motion and the transverse direction considered. We analyze the anisotropy effects to the coefficients and compare them to each other and to them of the isotropic theory. To examine the dependence of the coefficients on the type of the geometry, we consider another bottom-up anisotropic model. Changing the geometry from prolate to oblate, certain diffusion coefficients interchange their behaviors. In both anisotropic backgrounds we find cases that the transverse diffusion coefficient is larger than the longitudinal, but we find no negative excess noise.
