Uniformization problems in the plane: A survey

In this survey we present the history and recent progress on several fundamental (quasi)conformal uniformization problems in the complex plane. Uniformization refers to the process of mapping a space to a canonical model by means of a well-behaved transformation that preserves the geometry and distorts shapes in a controlled fashion. A central problem in the area is Koebe's conjecture, which remains open after almost 120 years and predicts that each planar domain can be conformally mapped to a circle domain -- that is, a domain whose complementary components are points or closed disks. We trace the history of the conjecture, outline recent developments, and examine the associated uniqueness problem. We also discuss variants, with particular emphasis on the question whether a compact set can be mapped by a quasiconformal self-map of the plane to a Schottky set -- that is, a set in the plane whose complement is the union of disjoint open disks.

Characterization of tangent quasicircles and quasiannuli

We give a necessary and sufficient condition so that a pair of disjoint Jordan regions in the sphere can be quasiconformally mapped to a pair of disks. As a consequence, we obtain a simple characterization that involves Lipschitz functions for the case that one of the Jordan regions is a half-plane. We apply these results to prove that all polynomial cusps are quasiconformally equivalent and that a quasisymmetric embedding of the union of two disjoint disks extends to a quasiconformal map of the sphere, quantitatively. Also, in combination with previous work of the author, we obtain a new characterization of compact sets that are quasiconformally equivalent to Schottky sets.

Quasiconformal characterization of Schottky sets

The complement of the union of a collection of disjoint open disks in the $2$-sphere is called a Schottky set. We prove that a subset $S$ of the $2$-sphere is quasiconformally equivalent to a Schottky set if and only if every pair of complementary components of $S$ can be mapped to a pair of open disks with a uniformly quasiconformal homeomorphism of the sphere. Our theorem applies to Sierpi\'nski carpets and gaskets, yielding for the first time a general quasiconformal uniformization result for gaskets. Moreover, it contains Bonk's uniformization result for carpets as a special case and does not rely on the condition of uniform relative separation that is used in relevant works.

Uniformization of metric surfaces: A survey

In this survey we present the most recent developments in the uniformization of metric surfaces, i.e., metric spaces homeomorphic to two-dimensional topological manifolds. We start from the classical conformal uniformization theorem of Koebe and Poincar\'e. Then we discuss the Bonk-Kleiner theorem on the quasisymmetric uniformization of metric spheres, which marks the beginning of the study of the uniformization problem on fractal surfaces. The next result presented is Rajala's theorem on the quasiconformal uniformization of metric spheres. We conclude with the final result in this series of works, due to Romney and the author, on the weakly quasiconformal uniformization of arbitrary metric surfaces of locally finite area under no further assumption.

Characterization of quasispheres via smooth approximation

We prove that every two-dimensional quasisphere is the limit of a sequence of smooth spheres that are uniform quasispheres. In the case of metric spheres of finite area we provide necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for a quasisphere, involving the doubling property, linear local connectivity, the Loewner property, conformal modulus, and reciprocity. In particular, although an arbitrary quasisphere does not satisfy necessarily all of those geometric conditions, we prove that every quasisphere can be approximated by uniform quasispheres that are uniformly doubling, linearly locally connected, 2-Loewner, reciprocal and satisfy a uniform bound for the modulus of annuli.

Uniformization of gasket Julia sets

The object of the paper is to characterize gasket Julia sets of rational maps that can be uniformized by round gaskets. We restrict to rational maps without critical points on the Julia set. Under these conditions, we prove that a Julia set can be quasiconformally uniformized by a round gasket if and only if it is a fat gasket, i.e., boundaries of Fatou components intersect tangentially. We also prove that a Julia set can be uniformized by a round gasket with a David homeomorphism if and only if every Fatou component is a quasidisk; equivalently, there are no parabolic cycles of multiplicity 2. Our theorem applies to show that gasket Julia sets and limit sets of Kleinian groups can be locally quasiconformally homeomorphic, although globally this is conjectured to be false.

Piecewise quasiconformal dynamical systems of the unit circle

We study piecewise quasiconformal covering maps of the unit circle. We provide sufficient conditions so that a conjugacy between two such dynamical systems has a quasiconformal or David extension to the unit disk. Our main result generalizes the main result of arXiv:2010.11256, which deals with piecewise analytic maps. As applications, we provide a classification of piecewise quasiconformal maps of the circle up to quasisymmetric conjugacy, we prove a general conformal mating theorem for Blaschke products, and we study the quasiconformal geometry of parabolic basins.

Metric surfaces and conformally removable sets in the plane

We characterize conformally removable sets in the plane with the aid of the recent developments in the theory of metric surfaces. We prove that a compact set in the plane is $S$-removable if and only if there exists a quasiconformal map from the plane onto a metric surface that maps the given set to a set of linear measure zero. The statement fails if we consider maps into the plane rather than metric surfaces. Moreover, we prove that a set is $S$-removable (resp. $CH$-removable) if and only if every homeomorphism from the plane onto a metric surface (resp. reciprocal metric surface) that is quasiconformal in the complement of the given set is quasiconformal everywhere.

Uniformization of Gromov hyperbolic domains by circle domains

We prove that a domain in the Riemann sphere is Gromov hyperbolic if and only if it is conformally equivalent to a uniform circle domain. This resolves a conjecture of Bonk--Heinonen--Koskela and also verifies Koebe's conjecture (Kreisnormierungsproblem) for the class of Gromov hyperbolic domains. Moreover, the uniformizing conformal map from a Gromov hyperbolic domain onto a circle domain is unique up to Möbius transformations. We also undertake a careful study of the geometry of inner uniform domains in the plane and prove the above uniformization and rigidity results for such domains.

Exhaustions of circle domains

Koebe's conjecture asserts that every domain in the Riemann sphere is conformally equivalent to a circle domain. We prove that every domain $\Omega$ satisfying Koebe's conjecture admits an exhaustion, i.e., a sequence of interior approximations by finitely connected domains, so that the associated conformal maps onto finitely connected circle domains converge to a conformal map $f$ from $\Omega$ onto a circle domain. Thus, if Koebe's conjecture is true, it can be proved by utilizing interior approximations of a domain. The main ingredient in the proof is the construction of quasiround exhaustions of a given circle domain $\Omega$. In the case of such exhaustions, if $\partial \Omega$ has area zero, we show that $f$ is a M\"obius transformation. The paper builds upon a range of tools, including planar topology, Voronoi cells, classical and modern methods in (quasi)conformal mapping theory, the transboundary modulus of Schramm, and the dynamics of Schottky groups.

Lipschitz-Volume rigidity and Sobolev coarea inequality for metric surfaces

We prove that every 1-Lipschitz map from a closed metric surface onto a closed Riemannian surface that has the same area is an isometry. If we replace the target space with a non-smooth surface, then the statement is not true and we study the regularity properties of such a map under different geometric assumptions. Our proof relies on a coarea inequality for continuous Sobolev functions on metric surfaces that we establish, and which generalizes a recent result of Esmayli--Ikonen--Rajala.

CNED sets: countably negligible for extremal distances

The author has recently introduced the class of CNED sets in Euclidean space, generalizing the classical notion of NED sets, and shown that they are quasiconformally removable. A set $E$ is CNED if the conformal modulus of a curve family is not affected when one restricts to the subfamily intersecting $E$ at countably many points. We prove that several classes of sets that were known to be removable are also CNED, including sets of $\sigma$-finite Hausdorff $(n-1)$-measure and boundaries of domains with $n$-integrable quasihyperbolic distance. Thus, this work puts in common framework many known results on the problem of quasiconformal removability and suggests that the CNED condition should also be necessary for removability. We give a new necessary and sufficient criterion for closed sets to be (C)NED. Applying this criterion, we show that countable unions of closed (C)NED sets are (C)NED. Therefore we enlarge significantly the known classes of quasiconformally removable sets.

Rigidity and continuous extension for conformal maps of circle domains

We present sufficient conditions so that a conformal map between planar domains whose boundary components are Jordan curves or points has a continuous or homeomorphic extension to the closures of the domains. Our conditions involve the notions of cofat domains and CNED sets, i.e., countably negligible for extremal distance, recently introduced by the author. We use this result towards establishing conformal rigidity of a class of circle domains. A circle domain is conformally rigid if every conformal map onto another circle domain is the restriction of a Möbius transformation. We show that circle domains whose point boundary components are CNED are conformally rigid. This result is the strongest among all earlier works and provides substantial evidence towards the rigidity conjecture of He-Schramm, relating the problems of conformal rigidity and removability.

Conformal uniformization of planar packings by disk packings

A Sierpiński packing in the $2$-sphere is a countable collection of disjoint, non-separating continua with diameters shrinking to zero. We show that any Sierpiński packing by continua whose diameters are square-summable can be uniformized by a disk packing with a packing-conformal map, a notion that generalizes conformality in open sets. Being special cases of Sierpiński packings, Sierpiński carpets and some domains and can be uniformized by disk packings as well. As a corollary of the main result, the conformal loop ensemble (CLE) carpets can be uniformized conformally by disk packings, answering a question of Rohde-Werness.

Polyhedral approximation and uniformization for non-length surfaces

We prove that any metric surface (that is, metric space homeomorphic to a 2-manifold with boundary) with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. We use this result, together with the classical uniformization theorem, to prove that any metric surface homeomorphic to the 2-sphere with finite Hausdorff 2-measure admits a weakly quasiconformal parametrization by the Riemann sphere, answering a question of Rajala-Wenger. These results have been previously established by the authors under the assumption that the metric surface carries a length metric. As a corollary, we obtain new proofs of the uniformization theorems of Bonk-Kleiner for quasispheres and of Rajala for reciprocal surfaces. Another corollary is a simplification of the definition of a reciprocal surface, which answers a question of Rajala concerning minimal hypotheses under which a metric surface is quasiconformally equivalent to a Euclidean domain.

Polyhedral approximation of metric surfaces and applications to uniformization

We prove that any length metric space homeomorphic to a 2-manifold with boundary, also called a length surface, is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. As an application, using the classical uniformization theorem for Riemann surfaces and a limiting argument, we establish a general "one-sided" quasiconformal uniformization theorem for length surfaces with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Our approach yields a new proof of the Bonk-Kleiner theorem characterizing Ahlfors 2-regular quasispheres.

Metric definition of quasiconformality and exceptional sets

We show that a homeomorphism of Euclidean space is quasiconformal if and only if at each point there exists a sequence of uncentered open sets with bounded eccentricity shrinking to that point whose images also have bounded eccentricity. This generalizes the metric definition of quasiconformality of Gehring that uses balls instead. We also study exceptional sets for this definition, in connection with sets that are negligible for extremal distances. We introduce the class of CNED sets, generalizing the classical notion of NED sets studied by Ahlfors--Beurling. A set $A$ is CNED if the conformal modulus of a curve family is not affected when one restricts to the subfamily intersecting the set $A$ at countably many points. We show as our main theorem that CNED sets are exceptional for the definition of quasiconformality.

On the inverse absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings on hypersurfaces

We construct quasiconformal mappings $f\colon \mathbb{R}^{3} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{3}$ for which there is a Borel set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^2 \times \{0\}$ of positive Lebesgue $2$-measure whose image $f(E)$ has Hausdorff $2$-measure zero. This gives a solution to the open problem of inverse absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings on hypersurfaces, attributed to Gehring. By implication, our result also answers questions of Väisälä and Astala--Bonk--Heinonen.
