D-branes and non-Abelian T-duality

We study the effect of non-Abelian T-duality (NATD) on D-brane solutions of type II supergravity. Knowledge of the full interpolating brane solution allows us to track the brane charges and the corresponding brane configurations, thus providing justification for brane setups previously proposed in the literature and for the common lore that Dp brane solutions give rise to D(p+1)-D(p+3)-NS5 backgrounds under SU(2) NATD transverse to the brane. In brane solutions where spacetime is empty and flat at spatial infinity before the NATD, the spatial infinity of the NATD is universal, i.e. independent of the initial brane configuration. Furthermore, it gives enough information to determine the ranges of all coordinates after NATD. In the more complicated examples of the D2 branes considered here, where spacetime is not asymptotically flat before NATD, the interpretation of the dual solutions remains unclear. In the case of supersymmetric D2 branes arising from M2 reductions to IIA on Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds, we explicitly verify that the solution obeys the appropriate generalized spinor equations for a supersymmetric domain wall in four dimensions. We also investigate the existence of supersymmetric mass-deformed D2 brane solutions.

Consistent truncation with dilatino condensation on nearly Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds

We construct a consistent four-scalar truncation of ten-dimensional IIA supergravity on nearly Kähler spaces in the presence of dilatino condensates. The truncation is universal, i.e. it does not depend on any detailed features of the compactification manifold other than its nearly Kähler property, and admits a smooth limit to a universal four-scalar consistent truncation on Calabi-Yau spaces. The theory admits formal solutions with nonvanishing condensates, of the form $S^{1,3}\times M_6$, where $M_6$ is a six-dimensional nearly Kähler or Calabi-Yau manifold, and $S^{1,3}$ can be de Sitter, Minkowski or anti-de Sitter four-dimensional space.

Laplacian spectrum on a nilmanifold, truncations and effective theories

Motivated by low energy effective theories arising from compactification on curved manifolds, we determine the complete spectrum of the Laplacian operator on the three-dimensional Heisenberg nilmanifold. We first use the result to construct a finite set of forms leading to an N=2 gauged supergravity, upon reduction on manifolds with SU(3) structure. Secondly, we show that in a certain geometrical limit the spectrum is truncated to the light modes, which turn out to be left-invariant forms of the nilmanifold. We also study the behavior of the towers of modes at different points in field space, in connection with the refined swampland distance conjecture.

De Sitter space from dilatino condensates in (massive) IIA

We use the superspace formulation of (massive) IIA supergravity to obtain the explicit form of the dilatino terms, and we find that the quartic-dilatino term is positive. The theory admits a ten-dimensional de Sitter solution, obtained by assuming a nonvanishing quartic-dilatino condensate which generates a positive cosmological constant. Moreover, in the presence of dilatino condensates, the theory admits formal four-dimensional de Sitter solutions of the form $dS_4\times M_6$, where $M_6$ is a six-dimensional Kähler-Einstein manifold of positive scalar curvature.

Massive IIA supergravities

We perform a systematic search for all possible massive deformations of IIA supergravity in ten dimensions. We show that there exist exactly two possibilities: Romans supergravity and Howe-Lambert-West supergravity. Along the way we give the full details of the ten-dimensional superspace formulation of the latter. The scalar superfield at canonical mass dimension zero (whose lowest component is the dilaton), present in both Romans and massless IIA supergravities, is not introduced from the outset but its existence follows from a certain integrability condition implied by the Bianchi identities. This fact leads to the possibility for a certain topological modification of massless IIA, reflecting an analogous situation in eleven dimensions.

Supersymmetric IIB Background with AdS_4 Vacua from Massive IIA Supergravity

We present a new Type IIB supergravity background of the warped form AdS$_4\times \mathcal{M}_6$ with dilaton, $B$-field and all Ramond-Ramond fluxes turned on. We obtain the solution by applying non-Abelian T-duality to a certain representative of a class of AdS$_4$ backgrounds in massive IIA supergravity. By explicitly constructing the Killing spinor of the seed solution and using an argument involving Kosmann spinorial Lie derivative we demonstrate that the background is supersymmetric.

SU(3) structures on S2 bundles over four-manifolds

We construct globally-defined $SU(3)$ structures on smooth compact toric varieties (SCTV) in the class of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ bundles over $M$, where $M$ is an arbitrary SCTV of complex dimension two. The construction can be extended to the case where the base is Kähler-Einstein of positive curvature, but not necessarily toric, and admits a parameter space which includes $SU(3)$ structures of LT type.

The action principle and the supersymmetrisation of Chern-Simons terms in eleven-dimensional supergravity

We develop computational tools for calculating supersymmetric higher-order derivative corrections to eleven-dimensional supergravity using the action principle approach. We show that, provided the superspace Bianchi identities admit a perturbative solution in the derivative expansion, there are at least two independent superinvariants at the eight-derivative order of eleven-dimensional supergravity. Assuming the twelve-superforms associated to certain anomalous Chern-Simons terms are Weil-trivial, there will be a third independent superinvariant at this order. Under certain conditions, at least two superinvariants will survive to all orders in the derivative expansion. However only one of them will be present in the quantum theory: the supersymmetrization of the Chern-Simons terms of eleven dimensional supergravity required for the cancellation of the M5-brane gravitational anomaly by inflow. This superinvariant can be shown to be unique at the eight-derivative order, assuming it is quartic in the fields. On the other hand, a necessary condition for the superinvariant to be quartic is the exactness, in tau-cohomology, of X0,8 -the purely spinorial component of the eight-superform related by descent to the M5-brane anomaly polynomial. In that case it can also be shown that the solution of the Weil-triviality condition of the corresponding twelve-form, which is a prerequisite for the explicit construction of the superinvariant, is guaranteed to exist. We prove that certain highly non-trivial necessary conditions for the tau-exactness of X0,8 are satisfied. Moreover any potential superinvariant associated to anomalous Chern-Simons terms at the eight-derivative order must necessarily contain terms cubic or lower in the fields.

N=1 Chern-Simons-matter theory and localization

We consider the most general, classically-conformal, three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ Chern-Simons-matter theory with global symmetry $Sp(2)$ and gauge group $U(N)\times U(N)$. We show that the Lagrangian in the on-shell formulation of the theory admits one more free parameter as compared to the theory formulated in off-shell $\mathcal{N}=1$ superspace. The theory on $T^3$ can be formally localized. We partially carry out the localization procedure for the theory on $T^3$ with periodic boundary conditions. In particular we show that restricting to the saddle points with vanishing gauge connection gives a trivial contribution to the partition function, i.e. the bosonic and fermionic contributions exactly cancel each other.

Towards Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter on Nilmanifolds

We present a first study of the field spectrum on a class of negatively-curved compact spaces: nilmanifolds or twisted tori. This is a case where analytical results can be obtained, allowing to check numerical methods. We focus on the Kaluza-Klein expansion of a scalar field. The results are then applied to a toy model where a natural Dark Matter candidate arises as a stable massive state of the bulk scalar.

Generalized geometry lectures on type II backgrounds

The first part of these notes is a self-contained introduction to generalized complex geometry. It is intended as a `user manual' for tools used in the study of supersymmetric backgrounds of supergravity. In the second part we review some past and recent results on the generalized complex structure of supersymmetric type II vacua in various dimensions.

3d N=1 effective supergravity and F-theory from M-theory on fourfolds

We consider 3d N=1 M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds, and the effective 3d theory of light modes obtained by reduction from eleven dimensions. We study in detail the mass spectrum at the vacuum and, by decoupling the massive multiplets, we derive the effective 3d N=1 theory in the large-volume limit up to quartic fermion terms. We show that in general it is an ungauged N=1 supergravity of the form expected from 3d supersymmetry. In particular the massless bosonic fields consist of the volume modulus and the axions originating from the eleven-dimensional three-form, while the moduli-space metric is locally isometric to hyperbolic space. We consider the F-theory interpretation of the 3d N=1 M-theory vacua in the light of the F-theory effective action approach. We show that these vacua generally have F-theory duals with circle fluxes, thus breaking 4d Poincaré invariance.

Matrix model holography

We set up the formalism of holographic renormalization for the matter-coupled two-dimensional maximal supergravity that captures the low-lying fluctuations around the non-conformal D0-brane near-horizon geometry. As an application we compute holographically one- and two-point functions of the BFSS matrix quantum mechanics and its supersymmetric $SO(3)\times SO(6)$ deformation.

On the spin-2 Kaluza-Klein spectrum of AdS4 x S2(B4)

We perform a numerical study of the four-dimensional spin-2 Kaluza-Klein spectrum of supersymmetric AdS$_4\times S^2(\mathcal{B}_4)$ vacua and show that they do not exhibit scale separation. Our methods are generally applicable to similar problems where the compactification geometry is not known analytically, hence an analytic treatment of the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein masses is not available.

Generalized complex geometry of pure backgrounds in ten and eleven dimensions

Pure backgrounds are a natural generalization of supersymmetric Calabi-Yau compactifications in the presence of flux. They are described in the language of generalized SU(d) x SU(d) structures and generalized complex geometry, and they exhibit some interesting general patterns: the internal manifold is generalized Calabi-Yau, while the Ramond-Ramond flux is exact in a precise sense discussed in this paper. We have shown that although these two characteristics do persist in the case of generic ten-dimensional Euclidean type II pure backgrounds, they do not capture the full content of supersymmetry. We also discuss the uplift of real Euclidean type IIA pure backgrounds to supersymmetric backgrounds of Lorentzian eleven-dimensional supergravity.

IIA supergravity and M-theory on manifolds with SU(4) structure

We give the general form of supersymmetric backgrounds with two real supercharges of M-theory and type IIA supergravity (with non-zero Romans mass in general) of the form $\mathbb{R}^{1,d} \times \M_8$, d=1,2, on eight-dimensional manifolds with SU(4) structure. We point out a subtlety in the integrability theorems for low-dimensional supersymmetric compactifications. As a special case we examine Calabi-Yau flux vacua and we show that unbroken supersymmetry does not in general require the four-form flux to be (2,2) or primitive. Our results could be used to construct novel higher-dimensional analogues of the Klebanov-Strassler geometry. In the case of M-theory large-volume Calabi-Yau flux vacua our results are in agreement with partial supersymmetry breaking in three-dimensional N=2 supergravity. Alternatively, the conditions for supersymmetry can be expressed in terms of a real `superpotential' in accordance with three-dimensional N=1 supergravity. We present explicit examples of M-theory flux vacua on K3 \times K3, which however do not appear to possess F-theory duals with four-dimensional Poincaré invariance.

IIB supergravity on manifolds with SU(4) structure and generalized geometry

We consider N=(2,0) backgrounds of IIB supergravity on eight-manifolds M_8 with strict SU(4) structure. We give the explicit solution to the Killing spinor equations as a set of algebraic relations between irreducible su(4) modules of the fluxes and the torsion classes of M_8. One consequence of supersymmetry is that M_8 must be complex. We show that the conjecture of arxiv:1010.5789 concerning the correspondence between background supersymmetry equations in terms of generalized pure spinors and generalized calibrations for admissible static, magnetic D-branes, does not capture the full set of supersymmetry equations. We identify the missing constraints and express them in the form of a single pure-spinor equation which is well defined for generic SU(4)\times SU(4) backgrounds. This additional equation is given in terms of a certain analytic continuation of the generalized calibration form for codimension-2 static, magnetic D-branes.

Rigid 6D supersymmetry and localization

We construct rigid supersymmetric theories for interacting vector and tensor multiplets on six-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. Analyzing the Killing spinor equations, we derive the constraints on these theories. To this end, we reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometry. The formalism is illustrated with a number of examples, including manifolds that are hermitian, strong Kaehler with torsion. As an application, we show that the path integral of pure super Yang-Mills theory defined on a Calabi-Yau threefold M_6 localizes on stable holomorphic bundles over M_6.
