The uncertainty geometry of finite-dimensional position and momentum

Uncertainty relations are usually stated as bounds on selected combinations of variances, but the full covariance matrix contains substantially richer information about the geometry of quantum state space and about the operational capabilities of quantum systems. Here we characterize the covariance matrices attainable by a finite-dimensional canonical pair of observables related by the discrete Fourier transform, the natural analogue of position and momentum in a finite Hilbert space. We combine analytic arguments with convex-geometric and semidefinite-programming methods based on joint numerical ranges to describe the admissible region through unitary invariants, in particular the trace and determinant of the covariance matrix. This provides a systematic way to identify extremal states, generalizing the notion of minimum-uncertainty states, and to quantify how the discrete uncertainty geometry approaches its continuous counterpart with increasing dimension. We further show that the resulting covariance-matrix characterization has direct consequences for applications: it yields accuracy bounds for multi parameter estimation protocols and separability criteria for finite-dimensional bipartite systems, including discrete analogues of continuous-variable EPR-type witnesses. Our results establish a systematic and versatile platform for connecting uncertainty relations, convex quantum geometry, metrology, and entanglement detection in finite-dimensional systems.

Generalised quantum speed limit for arbitrary time-continuous evolution

The quantum speed limit describes how quickly a quantum system can evolve in time from an initial state to a final state under a given dynamics. Here, we derive a generalised quantum speed limit (GQSL) for arbitrary time-continuous evolution using the geometrical approach of quantum mechanics. The GQSL is applicable for quantum systems undergoing unitary, non-unitary, completely positive, non-completely positive and relativistic quantum dynamics. This reduces to the well known standard quantum speed limit (QSL), i.e., the Mandelstam-Tamm bound when the quantum system undergoes unitary time evolution. Using our formalism, we then obtain a quantum speed limit for non-Hermitian quantum systems. To illustrate our findings, we have estimated the quantum speed limit for a time-independent non-Hermitian system as well as for a time-dependent non-Hermitian system namely the Bethe-Lamb Hamiltonian for general two-level system.

Stronger Quantum Speed Limit For Mixed Quantum States

We derive a quantum speed limit for mixed quantum states using the stronger uncertainty relation for mixed quantum states and unitary evolution. We also show that this bound can be optimized over different choices of operators for obtaining a better bound. We illustrate this bound with some examples and show its better performance with respect to some earlier bounds.

Stronger Quantum Speed Limit

The quantum speed limit provides fundamental bound on how fast a quantum system can evolve between the initial and the final states. For the unitary evolution, the celebrated Mandelstam-Tamm (MT) bound has been widely studied for various systems. Here, we prove a stronger quantum speed limit (SQSL) for all quantum systems undergoing arbitrary unitary evolution and show that the MT bound is a special case of the stronger quantum speed limit. We apply our result for single system as well as for composite systems in separable and entangled states and show that the new bound is indeed tight. The stronger quantum speed limit will have wide range of applications in quantum control, quantum computing and quantum information processing.
