Consequences of the Gross/Zagier formulae: Stability of average L-values, subconvexity, and non-vanishing mod p

In this paper we investigate some consequences of the Gross/Zagier types of formulae which were introduced by Gross and Zagier, and were then generalized in various directions by Hatcher, Zhang, Kudla and several other people. Working in the classical context of central values of L-series of holomorphic forms of prime level, we deduce an exact average formula for suitable twists of such L-values, with a relation to the class number of associated imaginary quadratic fieds, thereby strengthening a result of Duke. One also obtains a stability result, as well as subconvexity (in this setting), and certian non-vanishing assertions. This article is dedicated to the memory of Serge Lang.

Irreducibility and cuspidality

Irreducible representations are the building blocks of general, semisimple Galois representations ρ, and cuspidal representations are the building blocks of automorphic forms πof the general linear group. It is expected that when an object of the former type is associated to one of the latter type, usually in terms of an identity of L-functions, the irreducibility of the former should imply the cuspidality of the latter, and vice-versa. It is not a simple matter - at all - to prove this expectation in either direction, and nothing much is known in dimensions >2. The main result of this article shows for n < 6, in particular, that the cuspidality of a regular algebraic πis implied by the irreducibility of ρ.

Average values of modular L-series via the relative trace formula

First we reprove, using representation theory and the relative trace formula of Jacquet, an average value result of Duke for modular L-series at the critical center. We also establish a refinement. To be precise, the L-value which appears is L(1/2, f)L(1/2,f,χ) (divided by the Petersson norm of f), and the average is over newforms f of prime level N and coefficients a_p(f), with χbeing an odd quadratic Dirichlet character of conductor -D and associated quadratic field K. For any prime p not dividing ND, the asymptotic as N goes to infinity is governed by a measure μ_p, which is the Plancherel measure at p when χ(p)=-1, but is new if χ(p)=1; as p goes to infinity both measures approach the Sato-Tate measure. A particular consequence of our refinement is that for any non-empty interval J in [-2,2], there are infinitely many primes N, which are inert in K, such that for some f of level N, a_p(f) is in J and L(1/2, f)L(1/2,f,χ) is non-zero.

Modular Curves, Modular Surfaces, and Modular Fourfolds

This article surveys some recent work of the author on Hilbert modular fourfolds X. After some preliminaries on the cohomology and special, codimension 2 cycles Z on X of Hirzebruch-Zagier type, a proof of the Tate conjecture for X over abelian fields is exposed. It is followed by a description of a method to construct classes in the Bloch's Chow group CH^3(X,1) by using Hecke translates of the cycles Z as above with suitable intersections in translates of modular curves. The article ends with the introduction of a modular Gersten complex for a general Shimura variety X and the corresponding groups CH^p_{mod}(X) and CH^p_{mod}(X,1).

Siegel modular forms of genus 2 attached to elliptic curves

The object of this article is to construct certain classes of arithmetically significant, holomorphic Siegel cusp forms F of genus 2, which are neither of Saito-Kurokawa type, in which case the degree 4 spinor L-function L(s, F) is divisible by an abelian L-function, nor of Yoshida type, in which case L(s,F) is a product of L-series of a pair of elliptic cusp forms. Two key examples are the forms F defined by the symmetric cube of a non-CM elliptic curve E over the rationals, and those defined by anticyclotomic twists (of even non-zero weight) of the base change of such an E to an imaginary quadratic field K. One of the main ingredients is the transfer, albeit indirect, of cusp forms πon GL(4) to GSp(4) with many of the expected properties, and this might be of independent interest. The transfer information is shown to be complete when πis regular and associated to an \ell-adic Galois representation. We also appeal to the (independent) results of Laumon and Weissauer on the zeta functions of Siegel modular threefolds.

Quotients of E^n by A_{n+1} and Calabi-Yau manifolds

We give a simple construction, starting with any elliptic curve E, of an n-dimensional Calabi-Yau variety of Kummer type (for any n>1), by considering the quotient Y of the n-fold self-product of E by a natural action of the alternating group A_{n+1} (in n+1 variables). The vanishing of H^m(Y, O_Y) for 0<m<n follows from the non-existence of (non-zero) fixed points in certain representations of A_{n+1}. For n<4 we provide an explicit crepant resolution X in characteristics different from 2,3. The key point is that Y can be realized as a double cover of P^n branched along a hypersurface of degree 2(n+1).

Algebraic cycles on Hilbert modular fourfolds and poles of L-functions

In this paper we give some evidence for the Tate (and Hodge) conjecture(s) for a class of Hilbert modular fourfolds X, whose connected components arise as arithmetic quotients of the fourfold product of the upper half plane by congruence subgroups Γof SL(2, O_K), where O_K denotes the ring of integers of a quartic, Galois, totally real number field K. The expected relationship to the orders of poles of the associated L-functions is verified for abelian extensions of \Q. Also shown is the existence of homologically non-trivial cycles of codimension two which are not intersections of divisors.

A cuspidality criterion for the functorial product on GL(2) x GL(3), with a cohomological application

This paper was motivated by a question of Avner Ash, asking if it is possible to construct non-selfdual, non-monomial, cuspidal cohomology classes for suitable congruence subgroups Γof SL(n,\Z). Such a construction, in special examples, has been known for some time for n=3; it is of course impossible for n=2. We show in this paper the existence of many such examples for n=6, which are primitive, by making use of the functorial product on GL(2) x GL(3), which was recently shown to be automorphic by Kim and Shahidi. We establish a general cuspidality criterion for this product, which is essential to the construction. We also show that there exist non-selfdual, monomial (cuspidal) classes for any n=2m > 3, and non-selfdual, non-monomial (but imprimitive) classes for n=4.

Existence of Ramanujan primes for GL(3)

In this Note we show that given any cusp form πon GL(3) over the rationals, there exist an infinite number of primes p which are Ramanujan for π, i.e., that the local components π_p are tempered for an infinite number of p. It turns out that the key structural device which is needed is the degree 8 adjoint L-function of π.

On the exceptional zeros of Rankin-Selberg L-functions

The main objects of study in this article are two classes of Rankin-Selberg L-unctions, namely L(s, f \times g) and L(s, sym^2(g) \times sym^2(g)), where f, g are newforms, holomorphic or of Maass type, on the upper half plane, and sym^2(g) denotes the symmetric square lift of g to GL(3). We prove that in general, i.e., when these L-functions are not divisible by L-functions of quadratic characters (such divisibility happening rarely), they do not admit any Landau-Siegel zeros. These zeros, which are real and close to s=1, are highly mysterious and are not expected to occur. There are corollaries of our result, one of them being a strong lower bound for special value at s=1, which is of interest both geometrically and analytically. One also gets this way a good bound on the norm of sym^2(g).

Modularity of solvable Artin representations of GO(4)-type

This is an updated version of ANT-0253. Let F be a number field with absolute Galois group G. We associate, to each continuous, solvable C-representation of G of GO(4)-type, an automorphic form P of GL(4)/F with the same L-function. As a consequence we exhibit an infinite class of primitive, 16-dimensional representations for which the Artin conjecture holds.

Modularity of the Rankin-Selberg L-series, and multiplicity one for SL(2)

A fundamental question, first raised by Langlands, is to know whether the Rankin-Selberg product of two (not necessarily holomorphic) cusp forms f and g is modular, i.e., if there exists an automorphic form f box g on GL(4)/Q whose standard L-function equals L^*(s, f x g) after removing the ramified and archimedean factors. The first main result of this paper is to answer it in the affirmative, in fact with the base field Q replaced by any number field F. Our proof uses a mixture of converse theorems, base change and descent, and it also appeals to the local regularity properties of Eisenstein series and the scalar products of their truncations. One of the applications of this result is that the space of cusp forms on SL(2) has multiplicity one. Concretely this means the following: If f, g are newforms of holomorphic or Maass type with trivial character such that the squares of the p-th coeficients of f and g are the same at almost all primes p, then g must be a twist of f by a quadratic Dirichlet character.
