Medium Modification of Charm Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions due to Pre-equilibrium Dynamics of Partons at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm {NN}}}$= 0.2--5.02 TeV

We study the production dynamics of charm quarks in the parton cascade model for relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The model is eminently suited for a study of the pre-equilibrium dynamics of charm quarks at modest transverse momenta. The treatment is motivated by QCD parton picture and describes the dynamics of an ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collision in terms of cascading partons which undergo scattering and multiplication while propagating. We find considerable suppression of charm quarks production in $AA$ collisions compared to those for $pp$ collisions at the same $\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}}$ scaled by number of collisions. This may be important for an accurate determination of energy loss suffered by charm quarks while traversing the thermalized quark gluon plasma.

Directed flow of photons in Cu+Au collisions at RHIC

Event-by-event fluctuations in the positions of nucleons in two colliding identical nuclei can lead to non-uniform initial energy density distribution on the transverse plane. In addition to initial state fluctuations, the difference in the number of participating nucleons in collision of two non-identical nuclei can also result in significant anisotropy in the initial geometry and energy density distributions. Thus, Cu+Au collisions are expected to provide interesting new aspects in the understanding of anisotropic flow in heavy ion collisions. We calculate directed flow co-efficient $v_1$ of thermal photons using a hydrodynamic model with fluctuating initial conditions at 200A GeV Cu+Au collisions at RHIC and compare it with the elliptic and triangular flow parameters obtained at same initial conditions. The photon $v_1$ as a function of transverse momentum is found to be non-zero and significantly large. However, it shows a different nature compared to the elliptic and triangular flow parameters. The $v_1$ is found to be completely dominated by QGP radiation in the region $1 < p_T < 6$ GeV and contribution from the hadronic phase to photon $v_1$ is only marginal. At $p_T < 2$ GeV, it is negative and it decreases further with smaller values of $p_T$. However, at $p_T > 2 $ GeV, $v_1$ is positive and rises slowly with $p_T$. In addition, the photon $v_1$ is found to be more sensitive to the initial formation time of the plasma compared to the elliptic and triangular flow parameters. We suggest that a simultaneous measurements of photon $v_n$ co-efficients, (n=1, 2, 3) can provide valuable information about the initial state produced in heavy ion collisions as well as help us understanding the direct photon puzzle.

Bottom Production in $pp$ Collisions at Large Hadron Collider Energies using Parton Cascade Model

We study the production of bottom quarks in $pp$ collisions at Large Hadron Collider energies using previously developed parton cascade model to explore the impact of Landau Pomeranchuk Midgal (LPM) effect on their dynamics. In contrast to the case for charm quarks reported recently, we find only a marginal impact of the suppression of multiple scatterings of partons due to the LPM effect on their production. It is felt that this happens as they are only produced in very hard collisions.

Landau Pomeranchuk Midgal Effect and Charm Production in $pp$ Collisions at Large Hadron Collider Energies using the Parton Cascade Model

We study the impact of the Landau Pomeranchuk Midgal (LPM) effect on the dynamics of parton interactions in proton proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider energies. For our investigation we utilize a microscopic kinetic theory based on the Boltzmann equation. The calculation traces the space-time evolution of the cascading partons interacting via semihard pQCD scatterings and fragmentations. We focus on the impact of the LPM effect on the production of charm quarks, since their production is exclusively governed by processes well described in our kinetic theory. The LPM effect is found to become more prominent as the collision energy rises and at central rapidities and may significantly affect the model's predicted charm distributions at low momenta.

Photon production from Pb+Pb collisions at {$\sqrt{s_{\rm {NN}}}$} = 5.02 TeV at LHC and at {$\sqrt{s_{\rm {NN}}}$} = 39 TeV at FCC

We calculate the production of prompt and thermal photons from Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02A TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and at 39A TeV at the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) facility. The photon spectra and anisotropic flow at these energies are compared with the results obtained from 2.76A TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC for three different centrality bins. The prompt photons originating from initial hard scatterings are found to increase by a factor of 1.5 to 2 at 5.02A TeV in the $p_T$ region 2 to 15 GeV and the enhancement is found to be about 5 to 15 times at FCC energy compared to 2.76A TeV in the same $p_T$ region. The evolution of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) formed in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC and FCC energies are studied using a hydrodynamical model and the $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow of thermal photons are calculated using state-of-the-art photon rates. The relative enhancement in the production of thermal photons is found to be more compared to prompt photons at FCC than at the LHC energies. Although the production of direct (prompt+thermal) photons is found to enhance significantly with increase in beam energy, the photon elliptic flow increases only marginally and does not show strong sensitivity to the collision energy.

Transport Dynamics of Parton Interactions in pp Collisions at LHC Energies

We investigate the transport dynamics of partons in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider using a Boltzmann transport approach, the parton cascade model. The calculations include semi-hard pQCD interaction of partons populating the nucleons and provide a space-time description of the collision in terms of cascading partons undergoing scatterings and fragmentations. Parton production and number of collisions rise rapidly with increase in center of mass energy of the collision. For a given center of mass energy, the number of parton interactions is seen to rise stronger than linear with decreasing impact parameter before saturating for very central collisions. The strangeness enhance factor $γ_s$ for the semi-hard processes is found to rise rapidly and saturate towards the highest collision energies. Overall, our study indicates a significant amount of partonic interactions in proton-proton collisions, which supports the observation of fluid-like behavior for high multiplicity proton-proton collisions observed in the experiments.

Production of Charm Quarks in a Parton Cascade Model for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm {NN}}}$= 200 GeV

We study the production and dynamics of heavy quarks in the parton cascade model for relativistic heavy ion collisions. The model is motivated by the QCD parton picture and describes the dynamics of an ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collision in terms of cascading partons which undergo scattering and multiplication while propagating. We focus on the dynamics of charm quark production and evolution in p+p and Au+Au collisions for several different interaction scenarios, i.e. collisions only between primary partons without radiation of gluons, multiple collisions without radiation of gluons and multiple collisions with radiation of gluons, allowing us to isolate the contributions of parton rescattering and radiation to charm production. We also discuss results of an eikonal approximation of the collision which provides a valuable comparison with mini-jet calculations and clearly brings out the importance of multiple collisions.

Spectra and elliptic flow of thermal photons from full overlap U+U collisions at RHIC

We calculate $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow for tip-tip and body-body configurations of full overlap uranium-uranium (U+U) collisions using a hydrodynamic model with smooth initial density distribution and compare the results with those obtained from Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Production of thermal photons is seen to be significantly larger for tip-tip collisions compared to body-body collisions of uranium nuclei in the region $p_T >$ 1 GeV. The thermal photon spectrum from body-body collisions is found to be close to the spectrum from most central Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The elliptic flow parameter calculated for body-body collisions is found to be large and comparable to the $v_2(p_T)$ for mid-central collisions of Au nuclei. On the other hand, as expected, the $v_2(p_T)$ is close to zero for tip-tip collisions. The qualitative nature of the photon spectra and elliptic flow for the two different orientations of uranium nuclei is found to be independent of the initial parameters of the model calculation. We show that the photon results from fully overlapping U+U collisions are complementary to the results from Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Anisotropic flow of thermal photons at RHIC and LHC

We calculate elliptic and triangular flow parameters of thermal photons using an event-by-event hydrodynamic model with fluctuating initial conditions at 200A GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC and at 2.76A TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC for three different centrality bins. The photon elliptic flow shows strong centrality dependence where $v_2(p_T)$ increases towards peripheral collisions both at RHIC and at the LHC energies. However, the triangular flow parameter does not show significant dependence to the collision centrality. The elliptic as well as the triangular flow parameters found to underestimate the PHENIX data at RHIC by a large margin for all three centrality bins. We calculate $p_T$ spectrum and anisotropic flow of thermal photons from 200A GeV Cu+Cu collisions at RHIC for 0--20\% centrality bin and compare with the results with those from Au+Au collisions. The production of thermal photon is found to decrease significantly for Cu+Cu collisions compared to Au+Au collisions. However, the effect of initial state fluctuation is found to be more pronounced for anisotropic flow resulting in larger $v_2$ and $v_3$ for Cu+Cu collisions. We study the correlation between the anisotropic flow parameters and the corresponding initial spatial anisotropies from their event by event distributions at RHIC and at the LHC energies. The linear correlation between $v_2$ and $ε_2$ is found be stronger compared to the correlation between $v_3$ and $ε_3$. In addition, the correlation coefficient is found to be larger at LHC than at RHIC.

Initial Temperature and Extent of Chemical Equilibration of Partons in Relativistic Collision of Heavy Nuclei

We emphasize that a knowledge of energy and entropy densities of quark gluon plasma - a thermalized de-confined matter, formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions fixes the formation temperature and the product of gluon fugacity and formation time uniquely, {\em provided} we know the relative fugacities of quarks and gluons. This also provides that a smaller formation time would imply larger fugacities for partons. Next we explore the limits of chemical equilibration of partons during the initial stages in relativistic collision of heavy nuclei. The experimentally measured rapidity densities of transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity at RHIC and LHC energies are used to estimate the energy and number densities with the assumption of formation of a thermally equilibrated quark gluon plasma which may be chemically equilibrated to the same or differing extents for quarks and gluons. The estimates are found to be very sensitive to the correction factor used for the Björken energy density for identifying it with the initial energy density. The extent of chemical equilibration near the end of the QGP phase is inferred by solving master equations by including the processes $gg \leftrightarrow ggg$ and $gg \leftrightarrow q\overline{q}$ along with expansion and cooling of the plasma. The possible consequences for invariant mass distribution of intermediate mass dileptons radiated from the plasma are discussed which could distinguish between different scenarios.

Charm Quark Energy Loss In Infinite QCD Matter Using A Parton Cascade Model

We utilize the Parton Cascade Model to study the evolution of charm quarks propagating through a thermal brick of QCD matter. We determine the energy loss and the transport coefficient '$\hat{q}$' for charm quarks. The calculations are done at a constant temperature of 350 MeV and the results are compared to analytical calculations of heavy quark energy loss in order to validate the applicability of using a Parton Cascade Model for the study of heavy quarks dynamics in hot and dense QCD matter.

Jet-Triggered Photons from Back-Scattering Kinematics for Quark Gluon Plasma Tomography

High energy photons created from back-scattering of jets in quark gluon plasma are a valuable probe of the temperature of the plasma, and of the energy loss mechanism of quarks in the plasma. An unambiguous identification of these photons through single inclusive photon measurements and photon azimuthal anisotropies has so far been elusive. We estimate the spectra of back-scattering photons in coincidence with trigger jets for typical kinematic situations at the Large Hadron Collider and the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We find that the separation of back-scattering photons from other photon sources using trigger jets depends crucially on our ability to reliably estimate the initial trigger jet energy. We estimate that jet reconstruction techniques in heavy ion experiments need to be able to get to jet $R_{AA}\gtrsim 0.7$ in central collisions for viable back-scattering signals.

Thermal photon $v_3$ at LHC from fluctuating initial conditions

We calculate the triangular flow parameter $v_3$ of thermal photons for 0--40\% central collisions of Pb nuclei at LHC using an event-by-event hydrodynamic model with fluctuating initial conditions. Thermal photon $v_3$ with respect to the the participant plane angle is found to be positive and significant compared to the elliptic flow parameter $v_2$ of thermal photons. In addition, photon $v_3$ as a function of $p_T$ shows similar qualitative nature to photon $v_2$ in the region $1< p_T <6$ GeV/$c$. We argue that while $v_3$ originates from $ε_3$ deformations of the initial state density distribution, fast buildup of radial flow due to fluctuations is the main driving mechanism for the observed large value.

Triangular flow of thermal photons from an event-by-event hydrodynamic model for 2.76A TeV Pb+Pb collisions at LHC

We calculate the triangular flow parameter $v_3$ of thermal photons from an event-by-event ideal hydrodynamic model for $0--40\%$ central collisions of Pb nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV at LHC. $v_3$ determined with respect to the participant plane (PP) is found to be non-zero, positive and its $p_T$ dependence is qualitatively similar to the elliptic flow parameter $v_2$(PP) of thermal photons in the range $1 \le p_T \le 6$ GeV/$c$. In the range $p_T \, \le $ 3 GeV/$c$, $v_3$(PP) is found to be about $50--75\%$ of $v_2$(PP) and for $p_T \, >$ 3 GeV/$c$ the two anisotropy parameters become comparable. The local fluctuations in the initial density distribution as well as the initial global geometry of the produced matter in the event-by-event hydrodynamic framework are responsible for this substantial value of $v_3({\rm PP})$. However, as expected, the triangular flow parameter calculated with respect to the reaction plane $v_3$(RP) is found to be close to zero. We show that $v_3$(PP) strongly depends on the value of the fluctuation size scale $σ$ especially in the higher $p_T \, (\ge 3 {\rm GeV}/c)$ region where a larger value of $σ$ results in a smaller $v_3({\rm PP})$. In addition, the $v_3{\rm (PP)}$ is found to increase with the assumed formation time of the thermalized system.

Effect of Energy Loss On Azimuthal Correlation of charm and correlated charm decay in collision of lead nuclei at sqrt{s} = 2.76 A TeV

We present the effect of energy loss of charm/anti-charm produced in a relativistic heavy ion collision as they traverse the resulting quark gluon plasma on the azimuthal correlation of c\bar{c} and D\bar{D} pairs and their correlated decay into leptons. We employ an empirical model of energy loss by charm quark energy loss and find that the consequences are easily discernible as different cuts on their momenta are applied. We also notice a modest increase in the invariant mass spectrum of dileptons from correlated decay as mentioned above due to energy loss.

Nuclear modification of charged hadron production at LHC

We analyze the recent results for suppressed production of charged hadrons for Pb+Pb collisions at the center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV/nucleon-pair. We closely follow the treatment used recently by us where partons lose energy due to radiation of gluons following multiple scatterings while traversing the quark gluon plasma, before fragmenting into hadrons at the center of mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. We obtain an empirical value for the momentum transport coefficient $(\widehat{q})$ and provide predictions for azimuthal anisotropy of hadron momenta for non-central collisions.

Jet-Tagged Back-Scattering Photons For Quark Gluon Plasma Tomography

Direct photons are important probes for quark gluon plasma created in high energy nuclear collisions. Various sources of direct photons in nuclear collisions are known, each of them endowed with characteristic information about the production process. However, it has been challenging to separate direct photon sources through measurements of single inclusive photon spectra and photon azimuthal asymmetry. Here we explore a method to identify photons created from the back-scattering of high momentum quarks off quark gluon plasma. We show that the correlation of back-scattering photons with a trigger jet leads to a signal that should be measurable at RHIC and LHC.

Heavy quark energy loss and D-Mesons at RHIC and LHC energies

We obtain the radiative energy loss of a heavy quark in a deconfined medium due to radiation of gluons off them using a recently derived generalised gluon emission spectrum. We find that the heavy flavour loses energy almost in a similar fashion like light quarks through this process. With this, we further analyse the nuclear modification factor for D-meson at LHC and RHIC energies. In particular, the obtained result is found to be in close agreement with the most recent data from ALICE collaboration at 2.76 ATeV Pb-Pb collisions. We also discuss the nuclear modification factor due to the collisional energy loss. Furthermore, the result of non-photonic single electron from the decay of both D and B mesons is compared with the RHIC data at 200 AGeV Au-Au collisions, which is also in close agreement.
