Tuning charge-transport properties and magnetic order in metallic EuTiO$_{3-\delta}$

The stoichiometric antiferromagnetic insulator EuTiO$_3$ is proximate to a ferroelectric phase. Whereas cation substitution has been used as a tuning parameter to introduce charge carriers and manipulate the magnetism, the effects of oxygen-vacancy doping have been less explored. Here we report a detailed study of the charge transport and magnetic properties of metallic, oxygen-vacancy-doped EuTiO$_{3-\delta}$. Using CaH$_2$ as an oxygen getter to achieve a higher carrier concentration than previously reported, we find that the phase diagram of the oxygen-vacancy-doped system is distinct from that obtained via cation doping. In particular, we uncover a change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order in the metallic state, with a maximum Curie temperature of TC $\approx$ 11 K at the highest carrier concentration of n $\approx$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$. These findings are supported by density functional theory calculations, which indicate a significant change in the nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange constant with increasing electron doping. We also present x-ray diffuse scattering and complementary first-principles results that reveal that, similar to the prominent incipient ferroelectric perovskite SrTiO$_3$, the data for EuTiO$_3$ are consistent with thermal diffuse scattering and with the absence of quasi-elastic contributions. Finally, we report specific heat measurements that confirm the magnetic transition temperatures deduced from magnetization measurements and corroborate the lattice dynamics picture inferred from the diffuse scattering data.

The X-ray photoemission and Co K -Edge X-ray absorption of Ba2CoWO6

The structural, electronic and optical properties of cubic double perovskite BaCoWO6 have been studied. Neutron powder diffraction data is collected on this sample from 6K to 300K. The crystal structure is face centered cubic, space group being Fm3m (No. 225). We did not find evidence for long range magnetic ordering in this system in this temperature range. The band-gap is estimated using Uv-vis spectroscopy. The Co-K edge X-ray absorption (XAFS) spectra of Ba2CoWO6 was analysed together with those Co-foil, which was used as reference compounds. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies give the insight of the electronic and structural information on the Co local environment for Ba2CoWO6.

Heritability estimates on resting state fMRI data using the ENIGMA analysis pipeline

Big data initiatives such as the Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis consortium (ENIGMA), combine data collected by independent studies worldwide to achieve more accurate estimates of effect sizes and more reliable and reproducible outcomes. Such efforts require harmonized analyses protocols to consistently extract phenotypes. Even so, challenges include wide variability of fMRI protocols and scanner platforms; this leads to site-to-site variance in quality, resolution and temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR). An effective harmonization should provide optimal measures for data of different qualities. We developed a multi-site rsfMRI analysis pipeline to allow research groups around the world to process rsfMRI scans in a harmonized way, to extract consistent and quantitative measurements of connectivity and to perform coordinated statistical tests. We used the single-modality ENIGMA rsfMRI pipeline based on model-free Marchenko-Pastor PCA based denoising to verify and replicate findings of significant heritability of measures from resting state networks. We analyzed two independent cohorts, GOBS (Genetics of Brain Structure) and HCP (the Human Connectome Project), which collected data using conventional and connectomics oriented fMRI protocols. We used seed-based connectivity and dual-regression approaches to show that rsfMRI signal is consistently heritable across twenty major functional network measures. Heritability values of 20-40% were observed across both cohorts.

A Network Object Method to Uncover Hidden Disorder-Related Brain Connectome

Neuropsychiatric disorders impact functional connectivity of the brain at the network level. The identification and statistical testing of disorder-related networks remains challenging. We propose novel methods to streamline the detection and testing of the hidden, disorder-related connectivity patterns as network-objects. We define an abnormal connectome subnetwork as a network-object that includes three classes: nodes of brain areas, edges representing brain connectomic features, and an organized graph topology formed by these nodes and edges. Comparing to the conventional statistical methods, the proposed approach simultaneously reduces false positive and negative discovery rates by letting edges borrow strengths precisely with the guidance of graph topological information, which effectively improves the reproducibility of findings across brain connectome studies. The network-object analyses may provide insights into how brain connectome is systematically impaired by brain illnesses.
