Large classes of permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$

Permutation polynomials (PPs) of the form $(x^{q} -x + c)^{\frac{q^2 -1}{3}+1} +x$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ were presented by Li, Helleseth and Tang [Finite Fields Appl. 22 (2013) 16--23]. More recently, we have constructed PPs of the form $(x^{q} +bx + c)^{\frac{q^2 -1}{d}+1} -bx$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$, where $d=2, 3, 4, 6$ [Finite Fields Appl. 35 (2015) 215--230]. In this paper we concentrate our efforts on the PPs of more general form \[ f(x)=(ax^{q} +bx +c)^r ϕ((ax^{q} +bx +c)^{(q^2 -1)/d}) +ux^{q} +vx~~\text{over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$}, \] where $a,b,c,u,v \in \mathbb{F}_{q^2}$, $r \in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$, $ϕ(x)\in \mathbb{F}_{q^2}[x]$ and $d$ is an arbitrary positive divisor of $q^2-1$. The key step is the construction of a commutative diagram with specific properties, which is the basis of the Akbary--Ghioca--Wang (AGW) criterion. By employing the AGW criterion two times, we reduce the problem of determining whether $f(x)$ permutes $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ to that of verifying whether two more polynomials permute two subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$. As a consequence, we find a series of simple conditions for $f(x)$ to be a PP of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$. These results unify and generalize some known classes of PPs.

The Zero-Difference Properties of Functions and Their Applications

A function $f$ from an Abelian group $(A,+)$ to an Abelian group $(B,+)$ is $(n, m, S)$ zero-difference (ZD), if $S=\{\lambda_\alpha \mid \alpha \in A\setminus\{0\}\}$ where $n=|A|$, $m=|f(A)|$ and $\lambda_\alpha=|\{x \in A \mid f(x+\alpha)=f(x)\}|$. A function is called zero-difference balanced (ZDB) if $S=\{\lambda\}$ where $\lambda$ is a constant number. ZDB functions have many good applications. However it is point out that many known zero-difference balanced functions are already given in the language of partitioned difference family (PDF). The problem that whether zero-difference ``not balanced" functions still have good applications as ZDB functions, is investigated in this paper. By using the change point technic, zero-difference functions with good applications are constructed from known ZDB functions. Then optimal difference systems of sets (DSS) and optimal frequency-hopping sequences (FHS) are obtained with new parameters. Furthermore the sufficient and necessary conditions of these objects being optimal, are given.

On the Glide of 3x+1 Problem

For any positive integer $n$, define an iterated function $$ f(n)=\left\{\begin{array}{ll} n/2, & \mbox{$n$ even,} \\ 3n+1, & \mbox{$n$ odd.} \end{array} \right. $$ Suppose $k$ (if it exists) is the lowest number such that $f^{k}(n)<n$, and there are $O(n)$ "multiply by three and add one" and $E(n)$ "divide by two" from $n$ to $f^{k}(n)$, then there must be $$ 2^{E(n)-1}<3^{O(n)}<2^{E(n)}. $$ Our results confirm the conjecture proposed by Terras in 1976.
