Robust Ambient Backscatter Communications with Polarization Reconfigurable Tags

Ambient backscatter communication system is an emerging and promising low-energy technology for Internet of Things. In such system, a device named tag, sends a binary message to a reader by backscattering a radio frequency signal generated by an ambient source. Such tag can operate without battery and without generating additional wave. However, the tag-to-reader link suffers from the source-to-reader direct interference. In this paper, for the first time, we propose to exploit a "polarization reconfigurable" antenna to improve robustness of the tag-to-reader link against the source-to-reader direct interference. Our proposed new tag sends its message by backscattering as an usual tag. However, it repeats its message several times, with a different radiation pattern and polarization, each time. We expect one polarization pattern to be better detected by the reader. We show by simulations and experiments, in line-of-sight and in richly scattering environment, that a polarization reconfigurable tag limited to 4 polarization directions outperforms a nonreconfigurable tag and nearly equals an ideally reconfigurable tag in performance.

First experimental evaluation of ambient backscatter communications with massive MIMO reader

Ambient backscatter communications have been introduced as low-power communications for green networking. This technology is very promising as it recycles ambient radio frequency waves, however such systems have limitations and suffer from poor performance due to their low-power. In this paper, we present and evaluate the performance of an ambient backscatter system equipped with a massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna at the reader side. A mobile device transmits a signal that is backscattered by a tag and received by the reader. Thanks to the spatial diversity of the massive MIMO antenna, the reader is able to identify, for each received signal, the state of the tag (backscattering or transparent) that corresponds to a bit of the tag message. First, we experimentally determine the channel between the device and the reader for two states of the tag. Then using a minimum mean square error algorithm we evaluate the performance of the ambient backscatter communication. We demonstrate that the performance of the ambient backscatter system is significantly improved by the massive MIMO reader.

Polarization-Based Reconfigurable Tags for Robust Ambient Backscatter Communications

Ambient backscatter communication is an emerging and promising low-energy technology for the Internet of Things. In such a system, a tag sends a binary message to a reader by backscattering a radio frequency signal generated by an ambient source. The tag can operate without battery and without generating additional radio waves. However, the tag-to-reader link suffers from the source-to-reader interference. In this paper, we propose a polarization-based reconfigurable antenna in order to improve the robustness of the tag-to-reader link against the source-to-reader direct interference. More precisely, we compare different types of tags' antennas, different tags' encoding schemes, and different detectors at the reader. By using analysis, numerical simulations, and experiments, we show that a polarization-based reconfigurable tag with four polarization directions significantly outperforms a non-reconfigurable tag, and provides almost the same performance as an ideal reconfigurable tag with a large number of reconfigurable polarization patterns.

Reconfigurable, Intelligent, and SustainableWireless Environments for 6G Smart Connectivity

Various visions on the forthcoming sixth Generation (6G) networks point towards flexible connect-and-compute technologies to support future innovative services and the corresponding use cases. 6G should be capable to accommodate ever-evolving and heterogeneous applications, future regulations, and diverse user-, service-, and location-based requirements. A key element towards building smart and energy sustainable wireless systems beyond 5G is the Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), which offers programmable control and shaping of the wireless propagation environment. Capitalizing on this technology potential, in this article we introduce two new concepts: i) wireless environment as a service, which leverages a novel RIS-empowered networking paradigm to trade off diverse, and usually conflicting, connectivity objectives; and ii) performance-boosted areas enabled by RIS-based connectivity, representing competing service provisioning areas that are highly spatially and temporally focused. We discuss the key technological enablers and research challenges with the proposed networking paradigm, and highlight the potential profound role of RISs in the recent Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture.

Backscatter Communication System With Dumb Diffusing Surface

Ambient backscatter communications have been identified for ultra-low energy wireless communications. Indeed, a tag can send a message to a reader without emitting any wave and without battery, simply by backscattering the waves generated by a source. In the simplest implementation of such a system, the tag sends a binary message by oscillating between two states and the reader detects the bits by comparing the two distinct received powers. In this paper, for the first time, we propose to study an ambient backscatter communication system, in the presence of a diffusing surface, a simple flat panel that diffuses in all directions. We establish the analytical closed form expression of the power contrast in the presence of the surface. We show that the diffusing surface improves the power contrast. Moreover our approach allows us to express the contrast to noise ratio, and therefore to establish the BER performance. Furthermore, we derive the optimum source transmit power for a given target power contrast. This makes it possible to quantify the amount of energy that can be saved at the source side, thanks to the diffusing surface.

Predictor Antenna: A Technique to Boost the Performance of Moving Relays

In future wireless systems, a large number of users may access the networks via moving relays (MRs) installed on top of vehicles. One of the main challenges of MRs is rapid channel variation which may make channel estimation, and its following procedures, difficult. To address these issues, various schemes are designed, among which predictor antenna (PA) is a candidate. The PA setup refers to a system with two (sets of) antennas on top of a vehicle, where the PA(s) positioned in front of the vehicle is(are) utilized to predict the channel state information required for data transmission to the receive antennas (RAs) aligned behind the PA. In this paper, we introduce the concept and the potentials of PA systems. Moreover, summarizing the field trials for PAs and the 3GPP attempts on (moving) relays, we compare the performance of different PA and non-PA methods for vehicle communications in both urban and rural areas with the PA setup backhauled through terrestrial or satellite technology, respectively. As we show, with typical parameter settings and vehicle speeds, a single-antenna PA-assisted setup can boost the backhaul throughput of MRs, compared to state-of-the-art open-loop schemes, by up to 50%.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface -Assisted Ambient Backscatter Communications -- Experimental Assessment

Sixth generation (6G) mobile networks may include new passive technologies, such as ambient backscatter communication or the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, to avoid the emission of waves and the corresponding energy consumption. On the one hand, a reconfigurable intelligent surface improves the network performance by adding electronically controlled reflected paths in the radio propagation channel. On the other hand, in an ambient backscatter system, a device, named tag, communicates towards a reader by backscattering the waves of an ambient source (such as a TV tower). However, the tag's backscattered signal is weak and strongly interfered by the direct signal from the ambient source. In this paper, we propose a new reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted ambient backscatter system. The proposed surface allows to control the reflection of an incident wave coming from the exact source location towards the tag and reader locations (creating hot spots at their locations), thanks to passive reflected beams from a predefined codebook. A common phase-shift can also be applied to the beam. Thanks to these features, we demonstrate experimentally that the performance of ambient backscatter communications can be significantly improved.

Ambient backscatters-friendly 5G networks: creating hot spots for tags and good spots for readers

In this paper, we present an ambient backscatters-friendly 5G network that creates locations with large power (hot spots) for tags and good reception locations (quiet spots or coherent spots) for readers. The massive multiple input multiple output (M-MIMO) antenna and beamforming capability of the 5G network is used as follows. In a first step, a training device (separate from tags and readers) is used to send pilots and train the 5G network to perform focusing and/or nulling onto marked locations. In a second step, tags and readers are positioned onto the marked locations. The robustness of M-MIMO beamforming to slight changes in the environment is exploited. Our initial simulation results, in a multipath propagation channel environment, show that creating a hot spot on a tag improves the tag-reader range however with a low probability of detection. Creating a hot spot on a tag and a good reception spot on a reader at the same time, improves the tag-reader range with 99% probability of detection. The study also shows that beamforming does not degrade the performance of a legacy 5G communication.

Smart Radio Environments Empowered by AI Reconfigurable Meta-Surfaces: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Future wireless networks are expected to constitute a distributed intelligent wireless communications, sensing, and computing platform, which will have the challenging requirement of interconnecting the physical and digital worlds in a seamless and sustainable manner. Currently, two main factors prevent wireless network operators from building such networks: 1) the lack of control of the wireless environment, whose impact on the radio waves cannot be customized, and 2) the current operation of wireless radios, which consume a lot of power because new signals are generated whenever data has to be transmitted. In this paper, we challenge the usual "more data needs more power and emission of radio waves" status quo, and motivate that future wireless networks necessitate a smart radio environment: A transformative wireless concept, where the environmental objects are coated with artificial thin films of electromagnetic and reconfigurable material (that are referred to as intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces), which are capable of sensing the environment and of applying customized transformations to the radio waves. Smart radio environments have the potential to provide future wireless networks with uninterrupted wireless connectivity, and with the capability of transmitting data without generating new signals but recycling existing radio waves. This paper overviews the current research efforts on smart radio environments, the enabling technologies to realize them in practice, the need of new communication-theoretic models for their analysis and design, and the long-term and open research issues to be solved towards their massive deployment. In a nutshell, this paper is focused on discussing how the availability of intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces will allow wireless network operators to redesign common and well-known network communication paradigms.

Spatial Modulation Based on Reconfigurable Antennas: Performance Evaluation by Using the Prototype of a Reconfigurable Antenna

In this paper, we study the performance of spatial modulation based on reconfigurable antennas. Two main contributions are provided. We introduce an analytical framework to compute the error probability, which is shown to be accurate and useful for system optimization. We design and implement the prototype of a reconfigurable antenna that is specifically designed for application to spatial modulation, and that provides multiple radiation patterns that are used to encode the information bits. By using the measured antenna radiation patterns, we show that spatial modulation based on reconfigurable antennas work in practice, and that its performance can be optimized by appropriately optimizing the radiation patterns to use for a given data rate.

Massive Multiple Input Massive Multiple Output for 5G Wireless Backhauling

In this paper, we propose a new technique for the future fifth generation cellular network wireless backhauling. We show that hundreds of bits per second per Hertz (bits per second per Hz) of spectral efficiency can be attained at a high carrier frequency (such as 26 GHz) between large antenna arrays deployed along structures (such as lamp posts) that are close and roughly parallel to each other. Hundreds of data streams are spatially multiplexed through a short range and line of sight massive multiple input massive multiple output propagation channel thanks to a new low complexity spatial multiplexing scheme, called block discrete Fourier transform based spatial multiplexing with maximum ratio transmission. Its performance in real and existing environments is assessed using accurate ray-tracing tools and antenna models. In the best simulated scenario, 1.6 kbits per second per Hz of spectral efficiency is attained, corresponding to 80% of Singular Value Decomposition performance, with a transmitter and a receiver that are 200 and 10,000 times less complex, respectively.
