On the discrete Wigner function for SU(N)

We present a self-consistent theoretical framework for finite-dimensional discrete phase spaces that leads us to establish a well-grounded mapping scheme between Schwinger unitary operators and generators of the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU(N)}$. This general mathematical construction provides a sound pathway to the formulation of a genuinely discrete Wigner function for arbitrary quantum systems described by finite-dimensional state vector spaces. To illustrate our results, we obtain a general discrete Wigner function for the group $\mathrm{SU(3)}$ and apply this to the study of a particular three-level system. Moreover, we also discuss possible extensions to the discrete Husimi and Glauber-Sudarshan functions, as well as future investigations on multipartite quantum states.

Representations of two-qubit and ququart states via discrete Wigner functions

By means of a well-grounded mapping scheme linking Schwinger unitary operators and generators of the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU(N)}$, it is possible to establish a self-consistent theoretical framework for finite-dimensional discrete phase spaces which has the discrete $\mathrm{SU(N)}$ Wigner function as a legitimate by-product. In this paper, we apply these results with the aim of putting forth a detailed study on the discrete $\mathrm{SU(2)} \otimes \mathrm{SU(2)}$ and $\mathrm{SU(4)}$ Wigner functions, in straight connection with experiments involving, among other things, the tomographic reconstruction of density matrices related to the two-qubit and ququart states. Next, we establish a formal correspondence between both the descriptions that allows us to visualize the quantum correlation effects of these states in finite-dimensional discrete phase spaces. Moreover, we perform a theoretical investigation on the two-qubit X-states, which combines discrete Wigner functions and their respective marginal distributions in order to obtain a new function responsible for describing qualitatively the quantum correlation effects. To conclude, we also discuss possible extensions to the discrete Husimi and Glauber-Sudarshan distribution functions, as well as future applications on spin chains.

Generalized squeezing operators, bipartite Wigner functions and entanglement via Wehrl's entropy functionals

We introduce a new class of unitary transformations based on the su(1,1) Lie algebra that generalizes, for certain particular representations of its generators, well-known squeezing transformations in quantum optics. To illustrate our results, we focus on the two-mode bosonic representation and show how the parametric amplifier model can be modified in order to generate such a generalized squeezing operator. Furthermore, we obtain a general expression for the bipartite Wigner function which allows us to identify two distinct sources of entanglement, here labelled by dynamical and kinematical entanglement. We also establish a quantitative estimate of entanglement for bipartite systems through some basic definitions of entropy functionals in continuous phase-space representations.

Quasiprobability distribution functions for finite-dimensional discrete phase spaces: Spin-tunneling effects in a toy model

We show how quasiprobability distribution functions defined over $N^{2}$-dimensional discrete phase spaces can be used to treat physical systems described by a finite space of states which exhibit spin tunneling effects. This particular approach is then applied to the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model in order to obtain the time evolution of the discrete Husimi function, and as a by-product the energy gap for a symmetric combination of ground and first excited states. Moreover, we also show how an angle-based potential approach can be efficiently employed to explain qualitatively certain features of the energy gap in terms of a spin tunneling. Entropy functionals are also discussed in this context. Such results reinforce not only the formalism per se but also the possibility of some future potential applications in other branches of physics.

A discrete finite-dimensional phase space approach for Fe8 magnetic clusters: characterizing tunneling efects via Wigner and Husimi functions

Discrete quantum phase space formalism is used to discuss some basic aspects of the spin tunneling occurring in Fe8 magnetic cluster by means of Wigner functions as well as Husimi distributions. Those functions were obtained for sharp angle states and symmetric combinations of the lowest energy doublet with the application of an external magnetic field. The time evolution of those functions carried out numerically allows one to extract valuable information about the dynamics of the states under consideration, in particular, the coherent oscillations associated with the spin tunneling. It is also shown that an entropy functional constructed out of the discrete Husimi distribution function allows to characterize the spin tunneling.

Discrete squeezed states for finite-dimensional spaces

We show how discrete squeezed states in an $N^{2}$-dimensional phase space can be properly constructed out of the finite-dimensional context. Such discrete extensions are then applied to the framework of quantum tomography and quantum information theory with the aim of establishing an initial study on the interference effects between discrete variables in a finite phase-space. Moreover, the interpretation of the squeezing effects is seen to be direct in the present approach, and has some potential applications in different branches of physics.
