Towards the precise description of Composite Higgs models at colliders

We present a framework to study the interactions among Nambu-Goldstone bosons (NGB), pseudo-NGB (pNGBs) and gauge bosons in Composite Higgs (CH) models at high energies, including operators of order $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ and $\mathcal{O}(p^2g^2)$ in the chiral expansion and topological terms. The set of (p)NGBs comprises the longitudinal modes of electroweak bosons, the Higgs boson, and possibly other scalar states from the dynamical spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking. The framework is implemented in a collider simulation tool especially suited for the study of Goldstone Boson Scattering (GBS), which includes vector boson scattering (VBS), di-Higgs production via vector boson fusion (VBF) and the pair production of other pNGBs via VBF.

Phenomenological aspects of composite Higgs scenarios: exotic scalars and vector-like quarks

Composite Higgs models usually contain additional pseudo Nambu Goldstone bosons and vector-like quarks. We discuss various aspects related to their LHC phenomenology and provide summary plots of exclusion limits using currently available information. We also describe a general parametrisation implemented in a software for Monte Carlo simulations and study the SU(5)/SO(5) scenario as a concrete example.

Vector Boson Scattering Processes: Status and Prospects

Insight into the electroweak (EW) and Higgs sectors can be achieved through measurements of vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The scattering of EW bosons are rare processes that are precisely predicted in the Standard Model (SM) and are closely related to the Higgs mechanism. Modifications to VBS processes are also predicted in models of physics beyond the SM (BSM), for example through changes to the Higgs boson couplings to gauge bosons and the resonant production of new particles. In this review, experimental results and theoretical developments of VBS at the Large Hadron Collider, its high luminosity upgrade, and future colliders are presented.

Modelling vector-like quarks in partial compositeness framework

Composite Higgs models, together with partial compositeness, predict the existence of new scalars and vector-like quarks (partners) at and above the TeV scale. Generically, the presence of these additional scalars opens up new decay topologies for the partners. In this paper we show how to systematically construct the general low energy Lagrangian to capture this feature. We emphasize the specific pattern in the top-partner spectrum arising in this class of models. We then present a concrete realization in the context of the SU(5)/SO(5) coset. We show that the top-partners in this model can have significant branching ratios to the additional scalars and a third generation quark, compared to the usual Standard Model channels. Amongst the most promising signatures at the LHC are final states containing a diphoton resonance along with a top quark.

Unleashing the full power of LHCb to probe Stealth New Physics

In this paper, we describe the potential of the LHCb experiment to detect Stealth physics. This refers to dynamics beyond the Standard Model that would elude searches that focus on energetic objects or precision measurements of known processes. Stealth signatures include long-lived particles and light resonances that are produced very rarely or together with overwhelming backgrounds. We will discuss why LHCb is equipped to discover this kind of physics at the Large Hadron Collider and provide examples of well-motivated theoretical models that can be probed with great detail at the experiment.

Exploring new possibilities to discover a light pseudo-scalar at LHCb

We study the possibility of observing a light pseudo-scalar $a$ at LHCb. We target the mass region $1 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 60$ GeV and various decay channels, some of which have never been considered before: muon pairs, tau pairs, $D$ meson pairs, and di-photon. We interpret the results in the context of models of 4D Composite Higgs and Partial Compositeness in particular.

Electroweak signatures of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in multiple hidden sectors

This paper discusses electroweak collider signatures of the NMSSM with multiple-sector gauge mediation. We focus on the production of neutralinos and charginos which cascade decay into standard model particles and lighter supersymmetric particles, with special emphasis on final states with multiple photons. A search strategy for signatures with at least three photons is presented and compared with current exclusion limits based on two-photon searches. We show that in many regions of the parameter space our strategy gives stronger constraints than the existing two-photon analysis for these models.

Pseudoscalar pair production via off-shell Higgs in composite Higgs models

We propose a new type of search for a pseudoscalar particle $η$ pair produced via an off-shell Higgs, $pp\to h^*\to ηη$. The search is motivated by a composite Higgs model in which the $η$ is extremely narrow and decays almost exclusively into $Zγ$ in the mass range $65$ GeV$\lesssim m_η\lesssim 160$ GeV. We devise an analysis strategy to observe the novel $ZγZγ$ channel and estimate potential bounds on the Higgs-$η$ coupling. The experimental sensitivity to the signatures depends on the power to identify fake photons and on the ability to predict large photon multiplicities. This search allows us to exclude large values of the compositeness scale $f$, being thus complementary to other typical processes.

Beyond the Standard Model in Vector Boson Scattering Signatures

The high-energy scattering of massive electroweak bosons, known as vector boson scattering (VBS), is a sensitive probe of new physics. VBS signatures will be thoroughly and systematically investigated at the LHC with the large data samples available and those that will be collected in the near future. Searches for deviations from Standard Model (SM) expectations in VBS facilitate tests of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) mechanism. Current state-of-the-art tools and theory developments, together with the latest experimental results, and the studies foreseen for the near future are summarized. A review of the existing Beyond the SM (BSM) models that could be tested with such studies as well as data analysis strategies to understand the interplay between models and the effective field theory paradigm for interpreting experimental results are discussed. This document is a summary of the EU COST network "VBScan" workshop on the sensitivity of VBS processes for BSM frameworks that took place December 4-5, 2019 at the LIP facilities in Lisbon, Portugal. In this manuscript we outline the scope of the workshop, summarize the different contributions from theory and experiment, and discuss the relevant findings.

Signatures of vector-like top partners decaying into new neutral scalar or pseudoscalar bosons

We explore the phenomenology of models containing one Vector-Like Quark (VLQ), $t'$, which can decay into the Standard Model (SM) top quark, $t$, and a new spin-0 neutral boson, $S$, the latter being either a scalar or pseudoscalar state. We parametrise the underlying interactions in terms of a simplified model which enables us to capture possible Beyond the SM (BSM) scenarios. We discuss in particular three such scenarios: one where the SM state is supplemented by an additional scalar, one which builds upon a 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) framework and another which realises a Composite Higgs Model (CHM) through partial compositeness. Such exotic decays of the $t'$ can be competitive with decays into SM particles, leading to new possible discovery channels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Assuming $t'$ pair production via strong interactions, we design signal regions optimised for one $t'\rightarrow S t$ transition (while being inclusive on the other \bar{t'} decay, and vice versa), followed by the decay of $S$ into the two very clean experimental signatures $S\rightarrow γγ$ and $S\rightarrow Z(\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-)γ$. We perform a dedicated signal-to-background analysis in both channels, by using Monte Carlo (MC) event simulations modelling the dynamics from the proton-proton to the detector level. Under the assumption of BR$(t' \rightarrow S t) = 100\%$, we are therefore able to realistically quantify the sensitivity of the LHC to both the $t'$ and $S$ masses, assuming both current and foreseen luminosities. This approach paves the way for the LHC experiments to surpass current VLQ search strategies based solely on $t'$ decays into SM bosons ($W^\pm, Z$, $h$).

Automated Predictions from Polarized Matrix Elements

The anticipated experimental resolution and data cache of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider will enable precision investigations of polarization in multiboson processes. This includes, for the first time, vector boson scattering. To facilitate such studies, we report the automation of polarized matrix element computations in the publicly available Monte Carlo tool suite, MadGraph5_aMC@NLO. This enables scattering and decay simulations involving helicity-polarized asymptotic or intermediate states, preserving both spin-correlation and off-shell effects. As demonstrations of the method, we investigate the leading order production and decay of polarized weak gauge bosons in the process $pp \to j j W^+_λW^-_{λ'}$, with helicity eigenstates $(λ,λ')$ defined in various reference frames. We consider the Standard Model at both $\mathcal{O}(α^4)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α^2 α_s^2)$ as well as a benchmark composite Higgs scenario. We report good agreement with polarization studies based on the On-Shell Projection (OSP) technique. Future capabilities are discussed.

Sigma-assisted natural composite Higgs

We show that the presence of a lightish scalar resonance, $σ$, that mixes with the composite Goldstone-Higgs boson can relax the typical bounds found in this class of models. This mechanism, inbred in models with a walking dynamics above the condensation scale, allows for a low compositeness scale $f \gtrsim 400$ GeV, corresponding to a misalignment angle $\sinθ\lesssim 0.6$, contrary to the common lore of a smaller angle. According to recent lattice results, the light $σ$ emerges thanks to a near-conformal phase above the condensation scale, consistent to the requirements from flavour physics. We study this effect in a general way, showing that it appears in all cosets emerging from an underlying gauge-fermion dynamics, in the presence of top partial compositeness. The scenario is testable both on the Lattice and experimentally, as it requires the presence of a second broad Higgs-like resonance, below 1 TeV, that can be revealed at the LHC in the $ZZ$ and $t\bar{t}$ channels.

Anomalous dimensions of potential top-partners

We discuss anomalous dimensions of top-partner candidates in theories of Partial Compositeness. First, we revisit, confirm and extend the computation by DeGrand and Shamir of anomalous dimensions of fermionic trilinears. We present general results applicable to all matter representations and to composite operators of any allowed spin. We then ask the question of whether it is reasonable to expect some models to have composite operators of sufficiently large anomalous dimension to serve as top-partners. While this question can be answered conclusively only by lattice gauge theory, within perturbation theory we find that such values could well occur for some specific models. In the Appendix we collect a number of practical group theory results for fourth-order invariants of general interest in gauge theories with many irreducible representations of fermions.

Top-quark Partial Compositeness beyond the effective field theory paradigm

In theories of Partial Compositeness the top quark is a mixture of a composite and an elementary state, and as a consequence its interactions with gauge bosons are expected to deviate from those of a point-like object. At sufficiently large energies, such deviations cannot be parametrized by the leading effective field theory operators and form factors (i.e. energy dependent interactions) must be introduced. In this work, we argue that such effects might appear at relatively low energies with interesting phenomenological consequences. In analogy to the proton electromagnetic interactions, we devise a simplified phenomenological model that parametrizes the top-quark interactions with gluons in terms of two form factors. We study the implications of these interactions in top-quark and heavy top-partner pair production at a hadron collider.

Dark matter in (partially) composite Higgs models

We construct composite and partially composite Higgs models with complex pseudo-Nambu--Goldstone (pNGB) dark matter states from four-dimensional gauge-Yukawa theories with strongly interacting fermions. The fermions are partially gauged under the electroweak symmetry, and the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking sector is minimal. The pNGB dark matter particle is stable due to a $\mathrm{U}(1)$ technibaryon-like symmetry, also present in the technicolor limit of the models. However, the relic density is particle anti-particle symmetric and due to thermal freeze-out as opposed to the technicolor limit where it is typically due to an asymmetry. The pNGB Higgs is composite or partially composite depending on the origin of the Standard Model fermion masses, which impacts the dark matter phenomenology. We illustrate the important features with a model example invariant under an SU(4)$\times$ SU(2) $\times$ $\mathrm{U}(1)$ global symmetry.
