Sharp endpoint extension inequalities for the moment curve on finite fields II: an extremal property of the uniform distribution

We identify the optimal constant and describe all maximizers for the Fourier endpoint extension inequality associated with the moment curve over finite fields. This confirms a conjecture proposed in the authors' earlier work. The proof proceeds by showing that the problem is equivalent to a purely probabilistic extremal statement: among all probability distributions on a finite set, the uniform distribution uniquely maximizes the expected number of distinct rearrangements of an i.i.d. sample.

Gaussians Do Not Always Maximize Mixed-Norm Strichartz Inequalities for the Schrödinger Equation

We investigate the maximization problem for the family of mixed-norm Strichartz inequalities for the Schrödinger equation, $\|e^{-itΔ/2}f\|_{L_t^qL_{\boldsymbol{x}}^r(\mathbb{R}^{1+d})}\le C_{q,r}\lVert f\rVert_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)}$, with $2/q+d/r=d/2$, $q,r\geq 2$, and thus $r\leq 2d/(d-2)$ if $d\geq 3$. We show that, in low dimensions $1\leq d\leq 5$, the thresholds $ρ_1=10$, $ρ_2=6$, $ρ_3=4\sqrt{7}-6\approx 4.583$, $ρ_4=2\sqrt{15}-4\approx 3.746$, and $ρ_5=10/3\approx 3.333$ are such that gaussians are stable local maximizers for $2<r<ρ_d$, and fail to be local maximizers for $ρ_d<r\leq 2d/(d-2)$ (with the conventions there is no upper bound on $r$ when $d\in\{1,2\}$ and that $r=\infty$ is excluded when $d=2$). In the cases $(q,r,d)\in\{(6,6,1),(8,4,1),(4,4,2)\}$, we establish global stability inequalities with effective stability constants. Both proofs hinge on spectral gaps which we compute exactly.

An SU(2n)-valued nonlinear Fourier transform

We define a nonlinear Fourier transform which maps sequences of contractive $n \times n$ matrices to $SU(2n)$-valued functions on the circle $\mathbb{T}$. We characterize the image of finitely supported sequences and square-summable sequences on the half-line, and construct an inverse for $SU(2n)$-valued functions whose diagonal $n \times n$ blocks are outer matrix functions. As an application, we relate this nonlinear Fourier transform with quantum signal processing over $U(2n)$ and multivariate quantum signal processing.

Sharp endpoint extension inequalities for the moment curve on finite fields

We investigate the sharp endpoint extension inequality for the moment curve in finite fields. We determine the optimal constant and characterize the maximizers in two complementary regimes: (i) low dimensions $d\leq 20$; (ii) large field cardinality $q\geq \frac{d(d-1)}{2 \log 6} + \frac{(2d-1)}{3}$. Our proof strategy relies on an intriguing interplay between analysis, algebra and combinatorics.

Dimension-free Fourier restriction inequalities

Let ${{\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}}(p\to q)$ denote the best constant for the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)\to L^q(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ Fourier restriction inequality to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, and let ${\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (p\to q;\textrm{rad})$ denote the corresponding constant for radial functions. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the operator norms ${{\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}}(p\to q)$ and ${\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (p\to q;\textrm{rad})$ as the dimension $d$ tends to infinity. We further establish a dimension-free endpoint Stein-Tomas inequality for radial functions, together with the corresponding estimate for general functions which we prove with an $O(d^{1/2})$ dependence. Our methods rely on a uniform two-sided refinement of Stempak's asymptotic $L^p$ estimate of Bessel functions.

Exponentials rarely maximize Fourier extension inequalities for cones

We prove the existence of maximizers and the precompactness of $L^p$-normalized maximizing sequences modulo symmetries for all valid scale-invariant Fourier extension inequalities on the cone in $\mathbb R^{1+d}$. In the range for which such inequalities are conjectural, our result is conditional on the boundedness of the extension operator. Global maximizers for the $L^2$ Fourier extension inequality on the cone in $\mathbb R^{1+d}$ have been characterized in the lowest-dimensional cases $d\in\{2,3\}$. We further prove that these functions are critical points for the $L^p$ to $L^q$ Fourier extension inequality if and only if $p = 2$.

Dimension-free estimates for low degree functions on the Hamming cube

The main result of this paper are dimension-free $L^p$ inequalities, $1 2,$ $\varepsilon>0,$ and $θ=θ(\varepsilon,p)\in (0,1)$ satisfying \[ \frac{1}{p}=\fracθ{p+\varepsilon}+\frac{1-θ}{2} \] we obtain, for any function $f:\{-1,1\}^n\to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is bounded from above by $d,$ the Bernstein-Markov type inequalities \[\|Δ^k f\|_{p} \le C(p,\varepsilon)^k \,d^k\, \|f\|_{2}^{1-θ}\|f\|_{p+\varepsilon}^θ,\qquad k\in \mathbb{N}.\] Analogous inequalities are also proved for $p\in (1,2)$ with $p-\varepsilon$ replacing $p+\varepsilon.$ As a corollary, if $f$ is Boolean-valued or $f\colon \{-1,1\}^n\to \{-1,0,1\},$ we obtain the bounds \[\|Δ^k f\|_{p} \le C(p)^k \,d^k\, \|f\|_p,\qquad k\in \mathbb{N}.\] At the endpoint $p=\infty$ we provide counterexamples for which a linear growth in $d$ does not suffice when $k=1$. We also obtain a counterpart of this result on tail spaces. Namely, for $p>2$ we prove that any function $f:\{-1,1\}^n\to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is bounded from below by $d$ satisfies the upper bound on the decay of the heat semigroup $$ \|e^{-tΔ}f\|_{p} \le \exp(-c(p,\varepsilon) td) \|f\|_{2}^{1-θ}\|f\|_{p+\varepsilon}^θ,\qquad t>0,$$ and an analogous estimate for $p\in (1,2).$ The constants $c(p,\varepsilon)$ and $C(p,\varepsilon)$ depend only on $p$ and $\varepsilon$; crucially, they are independent of the dimension $n$.

Stability of sharp Fourier restriction to spheres

In dimensions $d \in \{3,4,5,6,7\}$, we prove that the constant functions on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ maximize the weighted adjoint Fourier restriction inequality $$ \left| \int_{\mathbb{R}^d} |\widehat{fσ}(x)|^4\,\big(1 + g(x)\big)\,d x\right|^{1/4} \leq {\bf C} \, \|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})}\,,$$ where $σ$ is the surface measure on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, for a suitable class of bounded perturbations $g:\mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{C}$. In such cases we also fully classify the complex-valued maximizers of the inequality. In the unperturbed setting ($g = {\bf 0}$), this was established by Foschi ($d=3$) and by the first and third authors ($d \in \{4,5,6,7\}$) in 2015. Our methods also yield a new sharp adjoint restriction inequality on $\mathbb S^7\subset \mathbb R^8$.

Sharp extension inequalities on finite fields

Sharp restriction theory and the finite field extension problem have both received a great deal of attention in the last two decades, but so far they have not intersected. In this paper, we initiate the study of sharp restriction theory on finite fields. We prove that constant functions maximize the Fourier extension inequality from the parabola $\mathbb{P}^1\subset \mathbb{F}^{2\ast}_q$ and the paraboloid $\mathbb{P}^2\subset \mathbb{F}_q^{3\ast}$ at the euclidean Stein-Tomas endpoint; here, $\mathbb{F}_q^{d\ast}$ denotes the (dual) $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q=p^n$ elements, where $p$ is a prime number greater than $3$ or $2$, respectively. We fully characterize the maximizers for the $L^2\to L^4$ extension inequality from $\mathbb{P}^2$ whenever $q\equiv 1(\text{mod}\, 4)$. Our methods lead to analogous results on the hyperbolic paraboloid, whose corresponding euclidean problem remains open. We further establish that constants maximize the $L^2\to L^4$ extension inequality from the cone $Γ^3:=\{(\boldsymbolξ,τ, σ)\in \mathbb{F}^{4\ast}_q: τσ=\boldsymbolξ^2\}\setminus \{{\bf 0}\}$ whenever $q\equiv 3(\text{mod}\, 4)$. By contrast, we prove that constant functions fail to be critical points for the corresponding inequality on $Γ^3\cup \{{\bf 0}\}$ over $\mathbb{F}_p^4$. While some inspiration is drawn from the euclidean setting, entirely new phenomena emerge which are related to the underlying arithmetic and discrete structures.

The Stein-Tomas inequality under the effect of symmetries

We prove new Fourier restriction estimates to the unit sphere $S^{d-1}$ on the class of $O(d-k)\times O(k)$-symmetric functions, for every $d\geq 4$ and $2\leq k\leq d-2$. As an application, we establish the existence of maximizers for the endpoint Stein--Tomas inequality within that class. Moreover, we construct examples showing that the range of Lebesgue exponents in our estimates is sharp.

New Sign Uncertainty Principles

We prove new sign uncertainty principles which vastly generalize the recent developments of Bourgain, Clozel & Kahane and Cohn & Gonçalves, and apply our results to a variety of spaces and operators. In particular, we establish new sign uncertainty principles for Fourier and Dini series, the Hilbert transform, the discrete Fourier and Hankel transforms, spherical harmonics, and Jacobi polynomials, among others. We present numerical evidence highlighting the relationship between the discrete and continuous sign uncertainty principles for the Fourier and Hankel transforms, which in turn are connected with the sphere packing problem via linear programming. Finally, we explore some connections between the sign uncertainty principle on the sphere and spherical designs.

Block-radial symmetry breaking for ground states of biharmonic NLS

We prove that the biharmonic NLS equation $Δ^2 u +2Δu+(1+\varepsilon)u=|u|^{p-2}u$ in $\mathbb R^d$ has at least $k+1$ different solutions if $\varepsilon>0$ is small enough and $2<p<2_\star^k$, where $2_\star^k$ is an explicit critical exponent arising from the Fourier restriction theory of $O(d-k)\times O(k)$-symmetric functions. This extends the recent symmetry breaking result of Lenzmann-Weth and relies on a chain of strict inequalities for the corresponding Rayleigh quotients associated with distinct values of $k$. We further prove that, as $\varepsilon\to 0^+$, the Fourier transform of each ground state concentrates near the unit sphere and becomes rough in the scale of Sobolev spaces.

When does $e^{-\lvert τ\rvert }$ maximize Fourier extension for a conic section?

In the past decade, much effort has gone into understanding maximizers for Fourier restriction and extension inequalities. Nearly all of the cases in which maximizers for inequalities involving the restriction or extension operator have been successfully identified can be seen as partial answers to the question in the title. In this survey, we focus on recent developments in sharp restriction theory relevant to this question. We present results in the algebraic case for spherical and hyperbolic extension inequalities. We also discuss the use of the Penrose transform leading to some negative answers in the case of the cone.

Asymptotically sharp discrete nonlinear Hausdorff-Young inequalities for the SU(1,1)-valued Fourier products

We work in a discrete model of the nonlinear Fourier transform (following the terminology of Tao and Thiele), which appears in the study of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. The corresponding nonlinear variant of the Hausdorff-Young inequality can be deduced by adapting the ideas of Christ and Kiselev to the present discrete setting. However, the behavior of sharp constants remains largely unresolved. In this short note we give two results on these constants, after restricting our attention to either sufficiently small sequences or to sequences that are far from being the extremizers of the linear Hausdorff-Young inequality.

Intermittent symmetry breaking and stability of the sharp Agmon--Hörmander estimate on the sphere

We compute the optimal constant and characterise the maximisers at all spatial scales for the Agmon--Hörmander $L^2$-Fourier adjoint restriction estimate on the sphere. The maximisers switch back and forth from being constants to being non-symmetric at the zeros of two Bessel functions. We also study the stability of this estimate and establish a sharpened version in the spirit of Bianchi--Egnell. The corresponding stability constant and maximisers again exhibit a curious intermittent behaviour.

A variational restriction theorem

We establish variational estimates related to the problem of restricting the Fourier transform of a three-dimensional function to the two-dimensional Euclidean sphere. At the same time, we give a short survey of the recent field of maximal Fourier restriction theory.
