Interpolating geometries and the stretched dS$_2$ horizon

We investigate dilaton-gravity models whose solutions contain a large portion of the static patch of dS$_2$. The thermodynamic properties of these theories are considered both in the presence of a finite Dirichlet wall, as well as for asymptotically near-AdS$_2$ boundaries. We show that under certain circumstances such geometries, including those endowed with an asymptotically near-AdS$_2$ boundary, can be locally and even globally thermodynamically stable within particular temperature regimes. First order phase transitions reminiscent of the Hawking-Page transition are discussed. For judiciously chosen models, the near-AdS$_2$ boundary can be viewed as a completion of the stretched cosmological dS$_2$ horizon. We speculate on candidate microphysical models.

Quantum de Sitter horizon entropy from quasicanonical bulk, edge, sphere and topological string partition functions

Motivated by the prospect of constraining microscopic models, we calculate the exact one-loop corrected de Sitter entropy (the logarithm of the sphere partition function) for every effective field theory of quantum gravity, with particles in arbitrary spin representations. In doing so, we universally relate the sphere partition function to the quotient of a quasi-canonical bulk and a Euclidean edge partition function, given by integrals of characters encoding the bulk and edge spectrum of the observable universe. Expanding the bulk character splits the bulk (entanglement) entropy into quasinormal mode (quasiqubit) contributions. For 3D higher-spin gravity formulated as an sl($n$) Chern-Simons theory, we obtain all-loop exact results. Further to this, we show that the theory has an exponentially large landscape of de Sitter vacua with quantum entropy given by the absolute value squared of a topological string partition function. For generic higher-spin gravity, the formalism succinctly relates dS, AdS$^\pm$ and conformal results. Holography is exhibited in quasi-exact bulk-edge cancelation.

One-dimensional Quantum Gravity and the Schwarzian theory

We develop a model of one-dimensional (Conformal) Quantum Gravity. By discussing the connection between Goldstone and Gauge theories, we establish that this model effectively computes the partition function of the Schwarzian theory where the $\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry is realized on the base space. The computation is straightforward, involves a local quantum measure and does not rely on localization arguments. Non-localities in the model are exclusively related to the value of fixed gauge invariant moduli. Furthermore, we study the properties of these models when all degrees of freedom are allowed to fluctuate. We discuss the UV finiteness properties of these systems and the emergence of a Planck's length.

Three-dimensional de Sitter horizon thermodynamics

We explore thermodynamic contributions to the three-dimensional de Sitter horizon originating from metric and Chern-Simons gauge field fluctuations. In Euclidean signature these are computed by the partition function of gravity coupled to matter semi-classically expanded about the round three-sphere saddle. We investigate a corresponding Lorentzian picture - drawing inspiration from the topological entanglement entropy literature - in the form of an edge-mode theory residing at the de Sitter horizon. We extend the discussion to three-dimensional gravity with positive cosmological constant, viewed (semi-classically) as a complexified Chern-Simons theory. The putative gravitational edge-mode theory is a complexified version of the chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten model associated to the edge-modes of ordinary Chern-Simons theory. We introduce and solve a family of complexified Abelian Chern-Simons theories as a way to elucidate some of the more salient features of the gravitational edge-mode theories. We comment on the relation to the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence.

The semiclassical gravitational path integral and random matrices

We study the genus expansion on compact Riemann surfaces of the gravitational path integral $\mathcal{Z}^{(m)}_{\text{grav}}$ in two spacetime dimensions with cosmological constant $Λ>0$ coupled to one of the non-unitary minimal models $\mathcal{M}_{2m-1,2}$. In the semiclassical limit, corresponding to large $m$, $\mathcal{Z}^{(m)}_{\text{grav}}$ admits a Euclidean saddle for genus $h\geq 2$. Upon fixing the area of the metric, the path integral admits a round two-sphere saddle for $h=0$. We show that the OPE coefficients for the minimal weight operators of $\mathcal{M}_{2m-1,2}$ grow exponentially in $m$ at large $m$. Employing the sewing formula, we use these OPE coefficients to obtain the large $m$ limit of the partition function of $\mathcal{M}_{2m-1,2}$ for genus $h\ge 2$. Combining these results we arrive at a semiclassical expression for $\mathcal{Z}^{(m)}_{\text{grav}}$. Conjecturally, $\mathcal{Z}^{(m)}_{\text{grav}}$ admits a completion in terms of an integral over large random Hermitian matrices, known as a multicritical matrix integral. This matrix integral is built from an even polynomial potential of order $2m$. We obtain explicit expressions for the large $m$ genus expansion of multicritical matrix integrals in the double scaling limit. We compute invariant quantities involving contributions at different genera, both from a matrix as well as a gravity perspective, and establish a link between the two pictures. Inspired by the proposal of Gibbons and Hawking relating the de Sitter entropy to a gravitational path integral, our setup paves a possible path toward a microscopic picture of a two-dimensional de Sitter universe.

Matrix integrals $\&$ finite holography

We explore the conjectured duality between a class of large $N$ matrix integrals, known as multicritical matrix integrals (MMI), and the series $(2m-1,2)$ of non-unitary minimal models on a fluctuating background. We match the critical exponents of the leading order planar expansion of MMI, to those of the continuum theory on an $S^2$ topology. From the MMI perspective this is done both through a multi-vertex diagrammatic expansion, thereby revealing novel combinatorial expressions, as well as through a systematic saddle point evaluation of the matrix integral as a function of its parameters. From the continuum point of view the corresponding critical exponents are obtained upon computing the partition function in the presence of a given conformal primary. Further to this, we elaborate on a Hilbert space of the continuum theory, and the putative finiteness thereof, on both an $S^2$ and a $T^2$ topology using BRST cohomology considerations. Matrix integrals support this finiteness.

Notes on Matrix Models

In these notes we explore a variety of models comprising a large number of constituents. An emphasis is placed on integrals over large Hermitian matrices, as well as quantum mechanical models whose degrees of freedom are organised in a matrix-like fashion. We discuss the relation of matrix models to two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to conformal matter. We provide a brief overview of a variety of more general quantum mechanical matrix models and their putative worldsheet interpretation, as well as other recent developments on large $N$ systems. We end with a discussion of open questions and future directions.

Constructing AdS_2 flow geometries

We consider two-dimensional geometries flowing away from an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime. Macroscopically, flow geometries and their thermodynamic properties are studied from the perspective of dilaton-gravity models. We present a precise map constructing the fixed background metric from the boundary two-point function of a nearly massless matter field. We analyse constraints on flow geometries, viewed as solutions of dimensionally reduced theories, stemming from energy conditions. Microscopically, we construct computationally tractable RG flows in SYK-type models at vanishing and non-vanishing temperature. For certain regimes of parameter space, the flow geometry holographically encoding the microscopic RG flow is argued to interpolate between two (near) AdS$_2$ spacetimes. The coupling between matter fields and the dilaton in the putative bulk is also discussed. We speculate on microscopic flows interpolating between an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime and a portion of a dS$_2$ world.

De Sitter Horizons & Holographic Liquids

We explore asymptotically AdS$_2$ solutions of a particular two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theory. In the deep interior, these solutions flow to the cosmological horizon of dS$_2$. We calculate various matter perturbations at the linearised and non-linear level. We consider both Euclidean and Lorentzian perturbations. The results can be used to characterise the features of a putative dual quantum mechanics. The chaotic nature of the de Sitter horizon is assessed through the soft mode action at the AdS$_2$ boundary, as well as the behaviour of shockwave type solutions.

Infrared Realization of dS$_2$ in AdS$_2$

We describe a two-dimensional geometry that smoothly interpolates between an asymptotically AdS$_2$ geometry and the static patch of dS$_2$. We find this `centaur' geometry to be a solution of dilaton gravity with a specific class of potentials for the dilaton. We interpret the centaur geometry as a thermal state in the putative quantum mechanics dual to the AdS$_2$ evolved with the global Hamiltonian. We compute the thermodynamic properties and observe that the centaur state has finite entropy and positive specific heat. The static patch is the infrared part of the centaur geometry. We discuss boundary observables sensitive to the static patch region.

Charged Quantum Fields in AdS$_2$

We consider quantum field theory near the horizon of an extreme Kerr black hole. In this limit, the dynamics is well approximated by a tower of electrically charged fields propagating in an $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariant AdS$_2$ geometry endowed with a constant, symmetry preserving background electric field. At large charge the fields oscillate near the AdS$_2$ boundary and no longer admit a standard Dirichlet treatment. From the Kerr black hole perspective, this phenomenon is related to the presence of an ergosphere. We discuss a definition for the quantum field theory whereby we 'UV' complete AdS$_2$ by appending an asymptotically two dimensional Minkowski region. This allows the construction of a novel observable for the flux-carrying modes that resembles the standard flat space S-matrix. We relate various features displayed by the highly charged particles to the principal series representations of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. These representations are unitary and also appear for massive quantum fields in dS$_2$. Both fermionic and bosonic fields are studied. We find that the free charged massless fermion is exactly solvable for general background, providing an interesting arena for the problem at hand.

Higher Spin de Sitter Hilbert Space

We propose a complete microscopic definition of the Hilbert space of minimal higher spin de Sitter quantum gravity and its Hartle-Hawking vacuum state. The fundamental degrees of freedom are $2N$ bosonic fields living on the future conformal boundary, where $N$ is proportional to the de Sitter horizon entropy. The vacuum state is normalizable. The model agrees in perturbation theory with expectations from a previously proposed dS-CFT description in terms of a fermionic Sp(N) model, but it goes beyond this, both in its conceptual scope and in its computational power. In particular it resolves the apparent pathologies affecting the Sp(N) model, and it provides an exact formula for late time vacuum correlation functions. We illustrate this by computing probabilities for arbitrarily large field excursions, and by giving fully explicit examples of vacuum 3- and 4-point functions. We discuss bulk reconstruction and show the perturbative bulk QFT canonical commutations relations can be reproduced from the fundamental operator algebra, but only up to a minimal error term $\sim e^{-\mathcal{O}(N)}$, and only if the operators are coarse grained in such a way that the number of accessible "pixels" is less than $\mathcal{O}(N)$. Independent of this, we show that upon gauging the higher spin symmetry group, one is left with $2N$ physical degrees of freedom, and that all gauge invariant quantities can be computed by a $2N \times 2N$ matrix model. This suggests a concrete realization of the idea of cosmological complementarity.

Marginal Deformations and Rotating Horizons

Motivated by the near-horizon geometry of four-dimensional extremal black holes, we study a disordered quantum mechanical system invariant under a global $SU(2)$ symmetry. As in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, this system exhibits an approximate $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry at low energies, but also allows for a continuous family of $SU(2)$ breaking marginal deformations. Beyond a certain critical value for the marginal coupling, the model exhibits a quantum phase transition from the gapless phase to a gapped one and we calculate the critical exponents of this transition. We also show that charged, rotating extremal black holes exhibit a transition when the angular velocity of the horizon is tuned to a certain critical value. Where possible we draw parallels between the disordered quantum mechanics and charged, rotating black holes.

Disordered Quivers and Cold Horizons

We analyze the low temperature structure of a supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics with randomized superpotential coefficients, treating them as quenched disorder. These theories describe features of the low energy dynamics of wrapped branes, which in large number backreact into extremal black holes. We show that the low temperature theory, in the limit of a large number of bifundamentals, exhibits a time reparametrization symmetry as well as a specific heat linear in the temperature. Both these features resemble the behavior of black hole horizons in the zero temperature limit. We demonstrate similarities between the low temperature physics of the random quiver model and a theory of large $N$ free fermions with random masses.

Solvable Quantum Grassmann Matrices

We explore systems with a large number of fermionic degrees of freedom subject to non-local interactions. We study both vector and matrix-like models with quartic interactions. The exact thermal partition function is expressed in terms of an ordinary bosonic integral, which has an eigenvalue repulsion term in the matrix case. We calculate real time correlations at finite temperature and analyze the thermal phase structure. When possible, calculations are performed in both the original Hilbert space as well as the bosonic picture, and the exact map between the two is explained. At large $N$, there is a phase transition to a highly entropic high temperature phase from a low temperature low entropy phase. Thermal two-point functions decay in time in the high temperature phase.

Grassmann Matrix Quantum Mechanics

We explore quantum mechanical theories whose fundamental degrees of freedom are rectangular matrices with Grassmann valued matrix elements. We study particular models where the low energy sector can be described in terms of a bosonic Hermitian matrix quantum mechanics. We describe the classical curved phase space that emerges in the low energy sector. The phase space lives on a compact Kahler manifold parameterized by a complex matrix, of the type discovered some time ago by Berezin. The emergence of a semiclassical bosonic matrix quantum mechanics at low energies requires that the original Grassmann matrices be in the long rectangular limit. We discuss possible holographic interpretations of such matrix models which, by construction, are endowed with a finite dimensional Hilbert space.

Late-time Structure of the Bunch-Davies De Sitter Wavefunction

We examine the late time behavior of the Bunch-Davies wavefunction for interacting light fields in a de Sitter background. We use perturbative techniques developed in the framework of AdS/CFT, and analytically continue to compute tree and loop level contributions to the Bunch-Davies wavefunction. We consider self-interacting scalars of general mass, but focus especially on the massless and conformally coupled cases. We show that certain contributions grow logarithmically in conformal time both at tree and loop level. We also consider gauge fields and gravitons. The four-dimensional Fefferman-Graham expansion of classical asymptotically de Sitter solutions is used to show that the wavefunction contains no logarithmic growth in the pure graviton sector at tree level. Finally, assuming a holographic relation between the wavefunction and the partition function of a conformal field theory, we interpret the logarithmic growths in the language of conformal field theory.

Large N matrices from a nonlocal spin system

Large N matrices underpin the best understood models of emergent spacetime. We suggest that large N matrices can themselves be emergent from simple quantum mechanical spin models with finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We exhibit the emergence of large N matrices in a nonlocal statistical physics model of order N^2 Ising spins. The spin partition function is shown to admit a large N saddle described by a matrix integral, which we solve. The matrix saddle is dominant at high temperatures, metastable at intermediate temperatures and ceases to exist below a critical order one temperature. The matrix saddle is disordered in a sense we make precise and competes with ordered low energy states. We verify our analytic results by Monte Carlo simulation of the spin system.
