Full classification of $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$-linear generalized Hadamard codes

The $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$-additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}^n$. A $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$-linear generalized Hadamard (GH) code is a GH code over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$-additive code. A recursive construction gives such codes $H_p^{t_1,\dots,t_s}$, of type $(n;t_1,\dots,t_s)$ and length $p^t$, and a partial classification of them is known. In this paper, we complete the classification of these codes for every prime $p$. The main tool is the derived code, obtained by puncturing the code outside a block of coordinates determined by its kernel. For a nonlinear code $H_p^{t_1,\dots,t_s}$ with $t_1\geq2$, the derived code is a $\mathbb{Z}_{p^{s-1}}$-linear GH code of the same family, although the mechanism for odd $p$ differs from the binary one. As a consequence, for $t\geq3$, there are $\mathcal P(t+1)-\mathcal P(t)$ nonequivalent such codes of length $p^t$ if $p$ is odd, and $\mathcal P(t+1)-\mathcal P(t)-1$ if $p=2$, where $\mathcal P(n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$. In particular, this completes the classification of the $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard codes. We also prove a conjecture on the codes with $t_1\geq2$ and $t_s=0$.

Polynomials with restricted support and maximal zeros on a finite Cartesian set

Given a finite Cartesian set $S=X \times Y$ and a decreasing set of monomials $\mathcal M$, we call extremal polynomials for $\mathcal M$ over $S$ those that have the maximum number of zeros in $S$ and whose support belongs to $\mathcal M$. Coordinate factorizations give a family of extremal polynomials; we call them canonical. If $\max(\mathcal M)$, taken with respect to divisibility, is a single monomial, all extremal polynomials are canonical. If $|\max(\mathcal M)|=2$, either all extremal polynomials are canonical, or the problem reduces to the case where $\max(\mathcal M)=\{x^{d_x},y^{d_y}\}$. In the latter case, we prove that the existence of noncanonical extremal polynomials depends on finding families of subsets whose elementary symmetric functions agree. This condition is more restrictive than the classical Prouhet--Tarry--Escott problem, which asks for two sets whose elementary symmetric functions agree. We determine the number of triples $(X, Y, h)$, where $h$ is a quadratic noncanonical extremal polynomial. We apply extremal polynomials to coding theory via minimum-weight codewords.

The kernel-block rank profiles of the $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear and the $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard codes, and a complete classification of the $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes

The kernel of a binary code containing the zero word partitions the binary coordinates into blocks, two coordinates lying in the same block when every kernel word takes the same value in both, and the \emph{kernel-block rank profile} is the multiset of the dimensions of its linear span punctured on those blocks. For the family $H^{t_1,t_2,t_3}$ of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes, this invariant is known explicitly and gives a complete classification of the family. In this paper, we compute it for the $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear and $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard families with which those codes are compared, and we prove that it is constant for every nonlinear $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear Hadamard code and for every nonlinear $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard code $\bar H^{a_1,\dots,a_s}$ with $s\geq2$. The second statement is obtained without any rank formula, by exhibiting coordinate permutations that preserve the code and act transitively on its kernel blocks, which makes the argument uniform in $s$. We also prove a descent theorem: if $\bar H^{a_1,\dots,a_s}$ is nonlinear and $a_1\geq2$, then the code punctured on one kernel block is the $\mathbb{Z}_{2^{s-1}}$-linear Hadamard code $\bar H^{a_1,\dots,a_{s-1}}$. Consequently, the constant local rank equals $rank(\bar H^{a_1,\dots,a_{s-1}})$ and is at least $t-κ+2$, where $2^t$ is the length and $κ$ the kernel dimension. These results separate every nonlinear $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code from every $\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear, $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear and $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard code of the same length, except for the single infinite family $H^{1,1,t-4}$ and $\bar H^{2,0,t-5}$ with $t\geq5$. The members of this infinite family agree in the rank, kernel dimension and the kernel-block rank profile, but a two-block refinement separates them.

The kernel-block rank profile and a complete classification of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes

The $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{α_1}\times\mathbb{Z}_4^{α_2}\times\mathbb{Z}_8^{α_3}$, and a $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code is the Gray map image of such a code. A recursive construction of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive Hadamard codes $\mathcal H^{t_1,t_2,t_3}$, with all $α_i\neq0$, $t_1\geq1$, $t_2\geq0$, and $t_3\geq1$, is known, as are the linearity, kernel dimension, and rank of the corresponding codes $H^{t_1,t_2,t_3}$ of length $2^t$, where $t+1=3t_1+2t_2+t_3$. Yet these invariants do not completely classify the family. Two infinite families of pairs of distinct types share the length, rank and kernel dimension, and for classified lengths $2^t$, $3\leq t\leq11$, such pairs were separated only by computer equivalence tests. In this paper, we introduce an equivalence invariant that resolves these cases. The kernel partitions the binary coordinates into blocks, two coordinates lying in the same block when every kernel word takes the same value in both; the \emph{kernel-block rank profile} is the multiset of the dimensions of the linear span punctured on these blocks. Unlike rank and kernel dimension, which are global, this invariant records how much of the span survives on each block. We compute it for the whole family: there are $2^{t_1+t_2+t_3-1}$ blocks, all of size $2^{2t_1+t_2}$, and the profile takes at most two values $t_2+\binom{t_1+2}{2}$ and $t_2+2+\binom{t_1+1}{2}$, whose difference is $t_1-1$; it is constant precisely when $t_1=1$. Hence, the profile recovers $t_1$, and the length and kernel dimension recover $t_2$ and $t_3$. Two codes of the family with the same length are therefore equivalent if and only if their types coincide, and the number of pairwise nonequivalent such codes of length $2^t$ is $\lfloor(t^2+6)/12\rfloor$ for every $t\geq3$.

Rank and classification of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes

The $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{α_1}\times\mathbb{Z}_4^{α_2}\times\mathbb{Z}_8^{α_3}$. A $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code is a Hadamard code which is the Gray map image of such a code. A recursive construction of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive Hadamard codes $\mathcal H^{t_1,t_2,t_3}$, with all $α_i\neq0$, $t_1\geq1$, $t_2\geq0$, and $t_3\geq1$, is known, as are the linearity and kernel of the corresponding codes $H^{t_1,t_2,t_3}$ of length $2^t$. Their rank, however, was not known in closed form. In this paper, we determine $rank(H^{t_1,t_2,t_3})$ for every admissible triple and obtain an explicit closed formula. The proof computes the dimension of the space spanned by the binary coordinate functions of the code, viewed as Boolean functions of the binary digits of the message. We then use the rank formula, together with the known kernel dimension, to classify the family as far as these two invariants allow. The only pairs of distinct types of the same length sharing both invariants are $\bigl(H^{1,2,t-6},H^{2,0,t-5}\bigr)$ for $t\geq7$ and $\bigl(H^{2,2,t-9},H^{3,0,t-8}\bigr)$ for $t\geq10$. Consequently, the number of distinct pairs $(r,k)$ among the codes of length $2^t$ is $\lfloor(t^2+6)/12\rfloor$ for $3\leq t\leq6$, $\lfloor(t^2+6)/12\rfloor-1$ for $7\leq t\leq9$, and $\lfloor(t^2+6)/12\rfloor-2$ for $t\geq10$. Thus, rank and kernel dimension classify the family completely if and only if $3\leq t\leq6$. We also determine all coincidences with the $\mathbb{Z}_4$-, $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-, and $\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes of the same length: there is exactly one infinite family with the first two, namely $H^{2,1,t-7}$ and $H^{5,t-9}$ for $t\geq10$, and exactly five families with the $\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear codes.

Linearity and Classification of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-Linear Hadamard Codes

The $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{α_1} \times \mathbb{Z}_4^{α_2} \times \mathbb{Z}_8^{α_3}$. A $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code is a Hadamard code which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive code. A recursive construction of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive Hadamard codes of type $(α_1,α_2, α_3;t_1,t_2, t_3)$ with $α_1 \neq 0$, $α_2 \neq 0$, $α_3 \neq 0$, $t_1\geq 1$, $t_2 \geq 0$, and $t_3\geq 1$ is known. In this paper, we generalize some known results for $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear Hadamard codes to $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes with $α_1 \neq 0$, $α_2 \neq 0$, and $α_3 \neq 0$. First, we show for which types the corresponding $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes of length $2^t$ are nonlinear. For these codes, we compute the kernel and its dimension, which allows us to give a partial classification of these codes. Moreover, for $3 \leq t \leq 11$, we give a complete classification by providing the exact amount of nonequivalent such codes. We also prove the existence of several families of infinite such nonlinear $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes, which are not equivalent to any other constructed $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code, nor to any $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear Hadamard code, nor to any previously constructed $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard code with $s\geq 2$, with the same length $2^t$.

$\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-Additive Hadamard Codes

The $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{α_1} \times \mathbb{Z}_4^{α_2} \times \mathbb{Z}_8^{α_3}$, and can be seen as linear codes over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ when $α_2=α_3=0$, $\mathbb{Z}_4$-additive or $\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive codes when $α_1=α_3=0$ or $α_1=α_2=0$, respectively, or $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-additive codes when $α_3=0$. A $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code is a Hadamard code which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive code. First, we give a recursive construction of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-additive Hadamard codes of type $(α_1,α_2, α_3;t_1,t_2, t_3)$ with $t_1\geq 1$, $t_2 \geq 0$, and $t_3\geq 1$. Then, we show that in general the $\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear, $\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear and $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear Hadamard codes are not included in the family of $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes with $α_1 \neq 0$, $α_2 \neq 0$, and $α_3 \neq 0$. Actually, we point out that none of these nonlinear $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes of length $2^{11}$ is equivalent to a $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard code of any other type, a $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear Hadamard code, or a $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard code, with $s\geq 2$, of the same length $2^{11}$.

Equivalences among Z_{p^s}-linear Generalized Hadamard Codes

The $\Z_{p^s}$-additive codes of length $n$ are subgroups of $\Z_{p^s}^n$, and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\Z_2$, $\Z_4$, or $\Z_{2^s}$ in general. A $\Z_{p^s}$-linear generalized Hadamard (GH) code is a GH code over $\Z_p$ which is the image of a $\Z_{p^s}$-additive code by a generalized Gray map. A partial classification of these codes by using the dimension of the kernel is known. In this paper, we establish that some $\Z_{p^s}$-linear GH codes of length $p^t$ are equivalent, once $t$ is fixed. This allows us to improve the known upper bounds for the number of such nonequivalent codes. Moreover, up to $t=10$, this new upper bound coincides with a known lower bound (based on the rank and dimension of the kernel).

Construction and Linearity of Z_pZ_{p^2}-Linear Generalized Hadamard Codes

The $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-additive codes are subgroups of $\Z_p^{α_1} \times \Z_{p^2}^{α_2}$, and can be seen as linear codes over $\Z_p$ when $α_2=0$, $\Z_{p^2}$-additive codes when $α_1=0$, or $\Z_2\Z_4$-additive codes when $p=2$. A $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear generalized Hadamard (GH) code is a GH code over $\Z_p$ which is the Gray map image of a $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-additive code. In this paper, we generalize some known results for $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear GH codes with $p=2$ to any $p\geq 3$ prime when $α_1 \neq 0$. First, we give a recursive construction of $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-additive GH codes of type $(α_1,α_2;t_1,t_2)$ with $t_1,t_2\geq 1$. Then, we show for which types the corresponding $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear GH codes are non-linear over $\Z_p$. Finally, according to some computational results, we see that, unlike $\Z_4$-linear GH codes, when $p\geq 3$ prime, the $\Z_{p^2}$-linear GH codes are not included in the family of $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear GH codes with $α_1\not =0$.
