Complexity and rigidity of Ulrich modules, and some applications

We analyze whether Ulrich modules, not necessarily maximal CM (Cohen-Macaulay), can be used as test modules, which detect finite homological dimensions of modules. We prove that Ulrich modules over CM local rings have maximal complexity and curvature. Various new characterizations of local rings are provided in terms of Ulrich modules. We show that every Ulrich module of dimension $s$ over a local ring is $(s+1)$-Tor-rigid-test, but not $s$-Tor-rigid in general (where $s\geq 1$). Over a deformation of a CM local ring of minimal multiplicity, we also study Tor rigidity.

Gorensteinness of short local rings in terms of the vanishing of Ext and Tor

Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring which contains a regular sequence $ \underline{x} = x_1,\ldots,x_d \in \mathfrak{m} \smallsetminus \mathfrak{m}^2 $ such that $ \mathfrak{m}^3 \subseteq (\underline{x}) $. Let $ M $ be a finite $ R $-module with maximal complexity or curvature, e.g., $ M $ can be a nonzero direct summand of some syzygy module of the residue field $ R/\mathfrak{m} $. It is shown that the following are equivalent: (1) $R$ is Gorenstein, (2) $\mathrm{Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(M,R)=0$, and (3) $\mathrm{Tor}_{\gg 0}^R(M,ω) = 0$, where $ω$ denotes a canonical module of $R$. It gives a partial answer to a question raised by Takahashi. Moreover, the vanishing of $\mathrm{Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(ω,N)$ for certain $ R $-module $ N $ is also analyzed. Finally, it is studied why Gorensteinness of such local rings is important.

Some criteria for regular and Gorenstein local rings via syzygy modules

Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.

An asymptotic bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain Ext modules over graded complete intersection rings

Set $ A := Q/({\bf z}) $, where $ Q $ is a polynomial ring over a field, and $ {\bf z} = z_1,\ldots,z_c $ is a homogeneous $ Q $-regular sequence. Let $ M $ and $ N $ be finitely generated graded $ A $-modules, and $ I $ be a homogeneous ideal of $ A $. We show that (1) $ \mathrm{reg}\left( \mathrm{Ext}_A^{i}(M, I^nN) \right) \le ρ_N(I) \cdot n - f \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{i}{2} \right\rfloor + b \mbox{ for all } i, n \ge 0 $, (2) $ \mathrm{reg}\left( \mathrm{Ext}_A^{i}(M,N/I^nN) \right) \le ρ_N(I) \cdot n - f \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{i}{2} \right\rfloor + b' \mbox{ for all } i, n \ge 0 $, where $ b $ and $ b' $ are some constants, $ f := \mathrm{min}\{ \mathrm{deg}(z_j) : 1 \le j \le c \} $, and $ ρ_N(I) $ is an invariant defined in terms of reduction ideals of $ I $ with respect to $ N $. There are explicit examples which show that these inequalities are sharp.

Asymptotic associate primes

We investigate three cases regarding asymptotic associate primes. First, assume $ (A,\mathfrak{m}) $ is an excellent Cohen-Macaulay (CM) non-regular local ring, and $ M = \operatorname{Syz}^A_1(L) $ for some maximal CM $ A $-module $ L $ which is free on the punctured spectrum. Let $ I $ be a normal ideal. In this case, we examine when $ \mathfrak{m} \notin \operatorname{Ass}(M/I^nM) $ for all $ n \gg 0 $. We give sufficient evidence to show that this occurs rarely. Next, assume that $ (A,\mathfrak{m}) $ is excellent Gorenstein non-regular isolated singularity, and $ M $ is a CM $ A $-module with $\operatorname{projdim}_A(M) = \infty $ and $ \dim(M) = \dim(A) -1 $. Let $ I $ be a normal ideal with analytic spread $ l(I) < \dim(A) $. In this case, we investigate when $\mathfrak{m} \notin \operatorname{Ass} \operatorname{Tor}^A_1(M, A/I^n)$ for all $n \gg 0$. We give sufficient evidence to show that this also occurs rarely. Finally, suppose $ A $ is a local complete intersection ring. For finitely generated $ A $-modules $ M $ and $ N $, we show that if $ \operatorname{Tor}_i^A(M, N) \neq 0 $ for some $ i > \dim(A) $, then there exists a non-empty finite subset $ \mathcal{A} $ of $ \operatorname{Spec}(A) $ such that for every $ \mathfrak{p} \in \mathcal{A} $, at least one of the following holds true: (i) $ \mathfrak{p} \in \operatorname{Ass}\left( \operatorname{Tor}_{2i}^A(M, N) \right) $ for all $ i \gg 0 $; (ii) $ \mathfrak{p} \in \operatorname{Ass}\left( \operatorname{Tor}_{2i+1}^A(M, N) \right) $ for all $ i \gg 0 $. We also analyze the asymptotic behaviour of $\operatorname{Tor}^A_i(M, A/I^n)$ for $i,n \gg 0$ in the case when $I$ is principal or $I$ has a principal reduction generated by a regular element.

A short proof of a result of Katz and West

We give a short proof of a result due to Katz and West: Let $R$ be a Noetherian ring and $I_1,\ldots,I_t$ ideals of $R$. Let $M$ and $N$ be finitely generated $R$-modules and $N' \subseteq N$ a submodule. For every fixed $i \ge 0$, the sets $\mathrm{Ass}_R\left( \mathrm{Ext}_R^i(M, N/I_1^{n_1}\cdots I_t^{n_t} N') \right)$ and $\mathrm{Ass}_R\left( \mathrm{Tor}_i^R(M, N/I_1^{n_1}\cdots I_t^{n_t} N') \right)$ are independent of $(n_1,\ldots,n_t)$ for all sufficiently large $n_1,\ldots,n_t$.

Vanishing of (co)homology over deformations of Cohen-Macaulay local rings of minimal multiplicity

Let $ R $ be a $ d $-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring of minimal multiplicity. Set $ S := R/({\bf f}) $, where $ {\bf f} := f_1,\ldots,f_c $ is an $ R $-regular sequence. Suppose $ M $ and $ N $ are maximal CM $ S $-modules. It is shown that if $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for some $ (d+c+1) $ consecutive values of $ i \geqslant 2 $, then $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for all $ i \geqslant 1 $. Moreover, if this holds true, then either $ \mathrm{projdim}_R(M) $ or $ \mathrm{injdim}_R(N) $ is finite. In addition, a counterpart of this result for Tor-modules is provided. Furthermore, we give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a CM local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These conditions are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving homomorphic images of syzygy modules of the residue field.

Asymptotic prime divisors over complete intersection rings

Let $A$ be a local complete intersection ring. Let $M,N$ be two finitely generated $A$-modules and $I$ an ideal of $A$. We prove that \[ \bigcup_{i\geqslant 0}\bigcup_{n \geqslant 0}\mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^i(M,N/I^n N)\right) \] is a finite set. Moreover, we prove that there exist $i_0,n_0\geqslant 0$ such that for all $i\geqslant i_0$ and $n \geqslant n_0$, we have \[ \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2i}(M,N/I^nN)\right) = \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2 i_0}(M,N/I^{n_0}N)\right), \] \[ \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2i+1}(M,N/I^nN)\right) = \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2 i_0 + 1}(M,N/I^{n_0}N)\right). \] We also prove the analogous results for complete intersection rings which arise in algebraic geometry. Further, we prove that the complexity $\mathrm{cx}_A(M,N/I^nN)$ is constant for all sufficiently large $n$.

Characterizations of regular local rings via syzygy modules of the residue field

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring with residue field $k$. We show that if a finite direct sum of syzygy modules of $k$ surjects onto `a semidualizing module' or `a non-zero maximal Cohen-Macaulay module of finite injective dimension', then $R$ is regular. We also prove that $R$ is regular if and only if some syzygy module of $k$ has a non-zero direct summand of finite injective dimension.

Asymptotic linear bounds of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in multigraded modules

Let $A$ be a Noetherian standard $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebra over an Artinian local ring $A_0$. Let $I_1,\ldots,I_t$ be homogeneous ideals of $A$ and $M$ a finitely generated $\mathbb{N}$-graded $A$-module. We prove that there exist two integers $k$ and $k'$ such that \[ \mathrm{reg}(I_1^{n_1} \cdots I_t^{n_t} M) \leq (n_1 + \cdots + n_t) k + k' \quad\mbox{for all }~n_1,\ldots,n_t \in \mathbb{N}. \]

Existence of special primary decompositions in multigraded modules

Let $R=\bigoplus_{\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t}R_{\underline{n}}$ be a commutative Noetherian $\mathbb{N}^t$-graded ring, and $L = \bigoplus_{\underline{n}\in\mathbb{N}^t}L_{\underline{n}}$ be a finitely generated $\mathbb{N}^t$-graded $R$-module. We prove that there exists a positive integer $k$ such that for any $\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t$ with $L_{\underline{n}} \neq 0$, there exists a primary decomposition of the zero submodule $O_{\underline{n}}$ of $L_{\underline{n}}$ such that for any $P \in {\rm Ass}_{R_0}(L_{\underline{n}})$, the $P$-primary component $Q$ in that primary decomposition contains $P^k L_{\underline{n}}$. We also give an example which shows that not all primary decompositions of $O_{\underline{n}}$ in $L_{\underline{n}}$ have this property. As an application of our result, we prove that there exists a fixed positive integer $l$ such that the $0^{\rm th}$ local cohomology $H_I^0(L_{\underline{n}}) = \big(0 :_{L_{\underline{n}}} I^l\big)$ for all ideals $I$ of $R_0$ and for all $\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t$.

Effect of Bend Loss on Parabolic Pulse Formation by Active Dispersion Tailored Fibers

This work reports the performances of straight and bent active normal dispersion decreasing fibers (NDDF), with spatial nonlinear variation, to form parabolic self-similar pulses. The core radius changes along the NDDF length, thereby altering the transverse field distribution lengthwise. Hence bend loss is no longer a constant quantity. Including this loss variation, we investigate the performances of NDDFs as generators of parabolic self-similar pulses. In view of the small changes of relative refractive index differences during production, we obtain several NDDFs with variations of core radii. Suitable choice of index differences and bend radius of curvature of the fibers leads to obtain similaritons. Even for sufficiently small index differences and bend radii, parabolic pulses are formed at the cost of higher optimum length in comparison to straight fibers. The comparative study on the straight and bent NDDFs with different index difference values is helpful for fiber optic manufacturers to fabricate the proposed NDDFs.
