Applications of the Collective Field Theory for the Calogero-Sutherland Model

We use the collective field theory known for the Calogero-Sutherland model to study a variety of low-energy properties. These include the ground state energy in a confining potential upto the two leading orders in the particle number, the dispersion relation of sound modes with a comparison to the two leading terms in the low temperature specific heat, large amplitude waves, and single soliton solutions. The two-point correlation function derived from the dispersion relation of the sound mode only gives its nonoscillatory asymptotic behavior correctly, demonstrating that the theory is applicable only for the low-energy and long wavelength excitations of the system.

Majorana Fermion Representation For An Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Chain

We study the 1-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with s=1/2 using a Majorana representation of the s=1/2 spins. A simple Hartree-Fock approximation of the resulting model gives a bilinear fermionic description of the model. This description is rotationally invariant and gives power-law correlations in the ``ground state'' in a natural fashion. The excitations are a two-parameter family of particles, which are spin-1 objects. These are contrasted to the ``spinon'' spectrum, and the technical aspects of the representation are discussed, including the problem of redundant states.

Low-Lying Excited States and Low-Temperature Properties of an Alternating Spin-1 / Spin-1/2 Chain : A DMRG study

We report spin wave and DMRG studies of the ground and low-lying excited states of uniform and dimerized alternating spin chains. The DMRG procedure is also employed to obtain low-temperature thermodynamic properties of the system. The ground state of a 2N spin system with spin-1 and spin-1/2 alternating from site to site and interacting via an antiferromagnetic exchange is found to be ferrimagnetic with total spin $s_G=N/2$ from both DMRG and spin wave analysis. Both the studies also show that there is a gapless excitation to a state with spin $s_G-1$ and a gapped excitation to a state with spin $s_G+1$. Surprisingly, the correlation length in the ground state is found to be very small from both the studies for this gapless system. For this very reason, we show that the ground state can be described by a variational ``ansatz'' of the product type. DMRG analysis shows that the chain is susceptible to a conditional spin-Peierls' instability. The DMRG studies of magnetization, magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) and specific heat show strong magnetic-field dependence. The product $χT$ shows a minimum as a function of temperature($T$) at low-magnetic fields and the minimum vanishes at high-magnetic fields. This low-field behaviour is in agreement with earlier experimental observations. The specific heat shows a maximum as a function of temperature and the height of the maximum increases sharply at high magnetic fields. It is hoped that these studies will motivate experimental studies at high-magnetic fields.

Novel correlations in two dimensions: Two-body problem

We discuss a many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two dimensions introduced recently by Murthy, Bhaduri and Sen. Apart from an analysis of some exact solutions in the many-body system, we analyze in detail the two-body problem which is completely solvable. We show that the solution of the two-body problem reduces to solving a known differential equation due to Heun. We show that the two-body spectrum becomes remarkably simple for large interaction strength and the level structure resembles that of the Landau Levels. We also clarify the "ultraviolet" regularization which is needed to define an inverse-square potential properly and discuss its implications for our model.

A multispecies Calogero-Sutherland model

Motivated by the concept of ideal mutual statistics, we study a multispecies Calogero-Sutherland model in which the interaction parameters and masses satisfy some specific relations. The ground state is exactly solvable if those relations hold, both on a circle and on a line with a simple harmonic potential. In the latter case, the one-particle densities can be obtained using a generalization of the Thomas-Fermi method. We calculate the second virial coefficients in the high temperature expansion for the pressure. We show that the low-energy excitations are the same as those of a Gaussian conformal field theory. Finally, we discuss similar relations between the statistics parameters and charges for a multispecies anyon model in a magnetic field.

Semiclassical and field theoretic studies of Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with frustration and dimerization

The Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain with both dimerization and frustration is studied. The classical ground state has three phases (a Neel phase, a spiral phase and a colinear phase), around which a planar spin-wave analysis is performed. In each phase, we discuss a non-linear sigma model field theory describing the low energy excitations. A renormalization group analysis of the SO(3) matrix-valued field theory of the spiral phase leads to the conclusion that the theory becomes $SO(3) \times SO(3)$ and Lorentz invariant at long distances. This theory is analytically known to have a massive spin-1/2 excitation. We also show that $Z_2 ~$ solitons in the field theory lead to a double degeneracy in the spectrum for half-integer spins.

Novel correlations in two dimensions: Some exact solutions

We construct a new many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two space dimensions and obtain its exact many-body ground state for an arbitrary number of particles. This ground state has a novel pairwise correlation. A class of exact solutions for the excited states is also found. These excited states display an energy spectrum similar to the Calogero-Sutherland model in one dimension. The model reduces to an analog of the well-known trigonometric Sutherland model when projected on to a circular ring.

A comparative study of the phase diagrams of spin-$1 \over 2$ and spin-$1$ antiferromagnetic chains with dimerization and frustration

We use the density matrix renormalization group method to study the ground state `phase' diagram and some low-energy properties of isotropic antiferromagnetic spin-$1 \over 2$ and spin-$1$ chains with a next-nearest neighbor exchange $J_2 ~$ and an alternation $δ$ of the nearest neighbor exchanges. In the spin-$1 \over 2$ chain, the system is gapless for $δ=0$ and $J_2 < J_{2c} =0.241$, and is gapped everywhere else in the $J_2 - δ$ plane. At $J_{2c}$, for small $δ$, the gap increases as $δ^α$, where $α= 0.667 \pm 0.001$. $2J_2 + δ= 1$ is a disorder line. To the left of this line, the structure factor $S(q)$ peaks at $q_{max} = π$ (Neel `phase'), while to the right, $q_{max}$ decreases from $π$ to $π/2$ (spiral `phase') as $J_2$ increases. There is also a `$\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ phase' for large values of both $J_2$ and $δ$. In the spin-$1$ case, we find a line running from a gapless point at $(J_2 , δ) = (0,0.25 \pm 0.01)$ upto a `gapless' point at $(0.73 \pm 0.005,0)$ such that the open chain ground state is four-fold degenerate below the line and is unique above it. There is a disorder line in this case also and it has the same equation as in the spin-$1 \over 2$ case, but the line ends at about $δ=0.136$. Similar to the spin-$1 \over 2$ case, to the left of this line, the peak in the structure factor is at $π$ (Neel `phase'), while to the right of the line, it is at less than $π$ (spiral `phase'). For $δ=1$, the system corresponds to a spin ladder and the system is gapped for all values of the interchain coupling for both spin-$1 \over 2$ and spin-$1$ ladders.

On Quantum Solitons in the Sawtooth Lattice

We study the sawtooth lattice of a coupled spin $1/2$ Heisenberg system, a variant of the railroad trestle lattice. The ground state of this system is two-fold degenerate with periodic boundary conditions and supports kink antikink excitations, which are distinct in this case, unlike the railroad trestle lattice. The resulting low temperature thermodynamics is compared with the recently discovered Delafossites $Y Cu O_{2.5} ~$.

Phase Diagram of the Spin-One Heisenberg System with Dimerization and Frustration

We use the density matrix renormalization group method to study the ground state properties of an antiferromagnetic spin-$1$ chain with a next-nearest neighbor exchange $J_2 ~$ and an alternation $δ$ of the nearest neighbor exchanges. We find a line running from a gapless point at $(J_2 , δ) = (0, 0.25 \pm 0.01)$ upto an almost gapless point at $(0.725 \pm 0.01, 0$ such that the open chain ground state is $4$-fold degenerate below the line and is unique above it. A disorder line $2 J_2 + δ= 1$ runs from $δ=0$ to about $δ=0.136$. To the left of this line, the peak in the structure factor $S(q)$ is at $π$, while to the right of the line, it is at less than $π$.

Field Theories of Frustrated Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

We study the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with both dimerization and frustration. The classical ground state has three phases: a Neel phase, a spiral phase and a colinear phase. In each phase, we discuss a non-linear sigma model field theory governing the low energy excitations. We study the theory in the spiral phase in detail using the renormalization group. The field theory, based on an $SO(3)$ matrix-valued field, becomes $SO(3) \times SO(3)$ and Lorentz invariant at long distances where the elementary excitation is analytically known to be a massive spin-$1/2$ doublet. The field theory supports $Z_2 ~$ solitons which lead to a double degeneracy in the spectrum for half-integer spins (when there is no dimerization).

Large-$U$ limit of a Hubbard model in a magnetic field: chiral spin interactions and paramagnetism

We consider the large-$U$ limit of the one-band Hubbard model at half-filling on a non-bipartite two-dimensional lattice. An external magnetic field can induce a three-spin chiral interaction at order $1 / U^2 ~$. We discuss situations in which, at low temperatures, the chiral term may have a larger effect than the Pauli coupling of electron spins to a magnetic field. We present a model which explicitly demonstrates this. The ground state is a singlet with a gap; hence the spin susceptibility is zero while the chiral susceptibility is finite and paramagnetic.

Dimensional Reduction of Two-Dimensional Anyons to a One-Dimensional Interacting Bose Gas

We conjecture that a two-dimensional anyon system reduces, when confined to a narrow channel, to a one-dimensional bose gas with a repulsive two-body $δ$-function interaction. We verify this conjecture in first-order perturbation theory near bosons. If the channel width is reduced to zero, the one-dimensional system is fermionic for all anyons other than bosons.

Thomas-Fermi Method For Particles Obeying Generalized Exclusion Statistics

We use the Thomas-Fermi method to examine the thermodynamics of particles obeying Haldane exclusion statistics. Specifically, we study Calogero-Sutherland particles placed in a given external potential in one dimension. For the case of a simple harmonic potential (constant density of states), we obtain the exact one-particle spatial density and a {\it closed} form for the equation of state at finite temperature, which are both new results. We then solve the problem of particles in a $x^{2/3} ~$ potential (linear density of states) and show that Bose-Einstein condensation does not occur for any statistics other than bosons.

A Bosonic Mean-Field Theory for Frustrated Heisenberg Antiferromagnets in Two Dimensions

We use a recently developed bosonic mean-field theory (MFT) to study the ordered ground states of frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets (FHAFM) in two dimensions. We emphasize the role of condensates in satisfying the MF variational equations and their relation to spin correlation functions at low temperatures. Our results are similar to those obtained using Schwinger boson MFT. However, we emphasize here that our MFT has three bosons at each site and that it is not necessary to rotate the quantization axes on appropriate sub-lattices to align all the spins ferromagnetically. This MFT is also closely related to a new spin-wave theory which enables us to obtain the spin-wave spectrum easily (without any rotation of axes) for an entire class of three-dimensionally ordered states. For the FHAFM on a triangular lattice, we use this theory to compute the spin-wave spectrum for all values of $~J_2 ~/J_1 ~$ and demonstrate the phenomenon of order from disorder. Semiclassical analysis of two- and three-spin antiferromagnets and anyons on a sphere

We do a semiclassical analysis for two or three spins which are coupled antiferromagnetically to each other. The semiclassical wave functions transform correctly under permutations of the spins if one takes into account the Wess-Zumino term present in the path integral for spins. The Wess-Zumino term here is a total derivative which has no effect on the energy spectrum. The semiclassical problem is related to that of anyons moving on a sphere with the statistics parameter $θ$ being $2 πS$ for two spins and $3 πS$ for three spins. Finally, we present a novel way of deriving the semiclassical wave functions from the spin wave functions.

Bosonic Mean Field Theory of the Spiral Phases of Heisenberg Antiferromagnets on a Chain

We develop a novel bosonic mean field theory to describe the spiral phases of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a one-dimensional chain, in terms of three bosons at each site. The ground state is disordered and for large values of the spin $S$, two different and exponentially small energy gaps are found. The spin-spin correlation function is computed and is shown to decay exponentially at large distances. Our mean field theory is also shown to be exact in a large-$N$ generalization.

Non-linear Field Theory of a Frustrated Heisenberg Spin Chain

We derive a continuum field theory for the Majumdar-Ghosh model in the large-$S$ limit, where the field takes values in the manifold of the $SO(3)$ group. No topological term is induced in the action and the cases for integer spin and half-integer spin appear to be indistinguishable. A one-loop $β-$function calculation indicates that the theory flows towards a strong coupling (disordered) phase at long distances. This is verified in the large-$N$ limit, where all excitations are shown to be massive. (Three figures not included)
