Four-fermion operators at dimension 6: dispersion relations and UV completions

A major task in phenomenology today is constraining the parameter space of SMEFT and constructing models of fundamental physics that the SM derives from. To this effect, we report an exhaustive list of sum rules for 4-fermion operators of dimension 6, connecting low energy Wilson coefficients to cross-sections in the UV. Unlike their dimension 8 counterparts which are amenable to a positivity bound, the discussion here is more involved due to the weaker convergence and indefinite signs of the dispersion integrals. We illustrate this by providing examples with weakly coupled UV completions leading to opposite signs of the Wilson coefficients for both convergent and non-convergent dispersion integrals. We further decompose dispersion integrals under weak isospin and color groups which lead to a tighter relation between IR measurements and UV models. These sum rules can become an effective tool for constructing consistent UV completions for SMEFT following the prospective measurement of these Wilson coefficients.

Future Constraints on Primordial Black Holes from XGIS-THESEUS

Current observations allow Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) in asteroid mass range $10^{17}-10^{22}$ g to constitute the entire dark matter (DM) energy density (barring a small mass range constrained by 21 cm observations). In this work, we explore the possibility of probing PBH with masses $10^{17}-10^{19}\,{\rm g}$ via upcoming X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) telescope array on-board the Transient High-Energy Sky and Early Universe Surveyor (THESEUS) mission. While our projected limits are comparable with those proposed in the literature for $10^{16}\,{\rm g}\,<\,M_{\mathrm{PBH}}\,<\,10^{17}\,{\rm g}$, we show that the XGIS-THESEUS mission can potentially provide the strongest bound for $10^{17} \mathrm{~g}<M_{\mathrm{PBH}} \lesssim 3\times 10^{18} \mathrm{~g}$ for non-rotating PBHs. The bounds become more stringent by nearly an order of magnitude for maximally rotating PBHs in the mass range $5\times10^{15}\,{\rm g}\,<\,M_{\rm PBH}\,\lesssim\,10^{19}\,{\rm g}$.

Towards constraining triple gluon operators through tops

Effective field theory techniques provide us important tools to probe for physics beyond the Standard Model in a relatively model-independent way. In this work, we revisit the CP-even dimension-6 purely gluonic operator to investigate the possible constraints on it by studying its effect on top-pair production at the LHC, in particular the high $p_T$ and $m_{t\bar{t}}$ tails of the distribution. Cut-based analysis reveals that the scale of New Physics when this operator alone contributes to the production process is greater than 3.4 TeV at 95% C.L., which is a much stronger bound compared to the bound of 850 GeV obtained from Run-I data using the same channel. This is reinforced by an analysis using Machine Learning techniques. Our study complements similar studies that have focussed on other collider channels to study this operator.

Constraining Light Dark Photons from GW190517 and GW190426_152155

Ultralight dark photons predicted in several Standard Model extensions can trigger the superradiant instability around rotating black holes if their Compton wavelength is comparable to the Blackhole radius. Consequently, the angular momentum of the black hole is reduced to a value which depends upon the mass and spin of the black hole as well as the mass of the dark photon. We use the mass and spin measurements of the primary black holes in two recently observed binary black hole systems: GW190517 and GW190426_152155 to constrain dark photon mass in the ranges $1.7\times 10^{-14}{\rm\ eV}<m_{A'}<7.6\times 10^{-13}{\rm\ eV}$ and $1.3\times 10^{-13}{\rm\ eV}<m_{A'}<4.2\times 10^{-12}{\rm\ eV}$ respectively, assuming a timescale of a few million years from the time of formation of the binary black hole system to the time of their merger. We also discuss an interesting X-ray binary system, MAXI J1820_070, albeit with a relatively small value of the spin parameter.

Astrophysical hints for magnetic black holes

We discuss a cornucopia of potential astrophysical signatures and constraints on magnetically charged black holes of various masses. As recently highlighted, being potentially viable astrophysical candidates with immense electromagnetic fields, they may be ideal windows to fundamental physics, electroweak symmetry restoration and non-perturbative quantum field theoretic phenomena. We investigate various potential astrophysical pointers and bounds -- including limits on charges, location of stable orbits and horizons in asymptotically flat and asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds, bounds from galactic magnetic fields and dark matter measurements, characteristic electromagnetic fluxes and tell-tale gravitational wave emissions during binary inspirals. Stable orbits around these objects hold an imprint of their nature and in the asymptotically de Sitter case, there is also a qualitatively new feature with the emergence of a stable outer orbit. We consider binary inspirals of both magnetic and neutral, and magnetic and magnetic, black hole pairs. The electromagnetic emissions and the gravitational waveform evolution, along with inter-black hole separation, display distinct features. Many of the astrophysical signatures may be observationally glaring -- for instance, even in regions of parameter space where no electroweak corona forms, owing to magnetic fields that are still many orders of magnitude larger than even Magnetars, their consequent electromagnetic emissions will be spectacular during binary inspirals. While adding new results, our discussions also complement works in similar contexts, that have appeared recently in the literature.

Neutrino charge constraints from scattering to the weak gravity conjecture to neutron stars

In various extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, and intriguingly even in the three-generation Standard Model without neutrino masses, neutrinos are allowed to have very tiny electric charges. After a review of the theoretical scenarios that allow the emergence of such charges, we discuss the existing observational limits and we derive new stringent direct upper bounds for the charges of the muon and tau neutrinos. We also point out a flavor-universal lower bound on neutrino charges which is obtained from the weak gravity conjecture, that is based on the hypothesis that gravity is the weakest force. We finally present a new flavor-universal upper bound on neutrino charges based on astrophysical observations of Magnetars.

Constraints on Axion-Lepton coupling from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

In this article, we study the implications of the coupling between Axion-Like-Particles (ALPs) and Leptons to cosmology, in particular, the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We show that the BBN, through the constraint on the effective number of relativistic neutrino species, provides the most stringent bound on the ALP-electron interaction strength for the mass of axion between 20 keV and 1 MeV. For other values of the mass, the BBN bound complements the stellar-evolution and laboratory bounds.

B-meson charged current anomalies: the post-Moriond status

In this note, we discuss the impact of the recent Belle result on the various theoretical explanations of the $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ anomalies. The pure tensor explanation, which was strongly disfavoured by the measurements of $F_L^{D^*}$ and high-$p_T$ $p \, p \to τ\, ν$ searches before Moriond, is now completely allowed because of reduction of the experimental world-average. Moreover, the pure right-chiral vector solution (involving right-chiral neutrinos) has now moved into the $2σ$ allowed range of the LHC $p \, p \to τ\, ν$ searches. We also critically re-examine the bound on $\mathcal{B}(B_c^- \to τ^- \barν_τ)$ from LEP data and show that the bound is considerably weaker than the number $10\%$ often used in the recent literature.

Cosmology in the presence of multiple light moduli

The generic expectation in string/supergravity models is that there are multiple moduli fields with masses of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale. We study the cosmology that arises as a result of vacuum misalignment of these moduli fields (in contrast to previous studies which mostly focussed on the single modulus case). We show that the dark radiation produced from the heavier moduli undergoes significant dilution. This happens even if there is a small splitting between the masses of the lightest and the heavier moduli. On the other hand, in the absence of fast annihilation processes decay of heavier moduli generically leads to overproduction of dark matter. We discuss a scenario where the problem can be addressed with a prompt dark matter annihilation to dark radiation. This can lead to realistic dark matter abundances, and the additional dark radiation produced as a result of this mechanism undergoes sufficient dilution as long as the annihilation is prompt.

Anatomy of $b \to c \, τ\, ν$ anomalies

In recent times, one of the strongest hints of Physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) has been the anomaly in the ratios $R_D$ and $R_{D^\ast}$ measured in the charged current decays of $B$-mesons. In this work, we perform a comprehensive analysis of these decay modes, first in a model independent way and subsequently, in the context of composite Higgs models. We discuss in depth as to how linearly realised $\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ symmetry imposes severe constraint on the various scenarios because of correlations with other $ΔF =1$ processes and $Z\,τ\,τ$ and $Z\,ν\,ν$ couplings. In the composite Higgs paradigm with partial compositeness, we show that, irrespective of the flavour structure of the composite sector, constraints from $ΔF =2$ processes bring the compositeness scale down to $\sim 650$ GeV which is in tension with electroweak precision observables. In the presence of composite leptoquarks, the situation improves only marginally (a factor of $\sqrt{2}$ in the compositeness scale), thus making the new states soon discoverable by direct searches at the LHC. We also comment on the possible explanation of the $R_{K,K^*}$ anomalies within the composite Higgs framework.

Combined explanations of B-physics anomalies: the sterile neutrino solution

In this paper we provide a combined explanation of charged- and neutral-current $B$-physics anomalies assuming the presence of a light sterile neutrino $N_R$ which contributes to the $B \to D^{(*)} τν$ processes. We focus in particular on two simplified models, where the mediator of the flavour anomalies is either a vector leptoquark $U_1^μ\sim ({\bf 3}, {\bf 1}, 2/3)$ or a scalar leptoquark $S_1 \sim ({\bf \bar 3}, {\bf 1}, 1/3)$. We find that $U_1^μ$ can successfully reproduce the required deviations from the Standard Model while being at the same time compatible with all other flavour and precision observables. The scalar leptoquark instead induces a tension between $B_s$ mixing and the neutral-current anomalies. For both states we present the limits and future projections from direct searches at the LHC finding that, while at present both models are perfectly allowed, all the parameter space will be tested with more luminosity. Finally, we study in detail the cosmological constraints on the sterile neutrino $N_R$ and the conditions under which it can be a candidate for dark matter.

A closer look at the $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ anomalies

The measurement of $R_D$ ($R_{D^*}$), the ratio of the branching fraction of $\overline{B} \to D τ\barν_τ(\overline{B} \to D^* τ\barν_τ)$ to that of $\overline{B} \to D l \barν_l (\overline{B} \to D^* l \barν_l)$, shows $1.9 σ$ $(3.3 σ)$ deviation from its Standard Model (SM) prediction. The combined deviation is at the level of $4 σ$ according to the Heavy Flavour Averaging Group (HFAG). In this paper, we perform an effective field theory analysis (at the dimension-6 level) of these potential New Physics (NP) signals assuming $\rm SU(3)_{C} \times SU(2)_{L} \times U(1)_{Y}$ gauge invariance. We first show that, in general, $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ are theoretically independent observables and hence, their theoretical predictions are not correlated. We identify the operators that can explain the experimental measurements of $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ individually and also together. Motivated by the recent measurement of the $τ$ polarisation in $\overline{B} \to D^* τ\barν_τ$ decay, $P_τ(D^*)$ by the Belle collaboration, we study the impact of a more precise measurement of $P_τ(D^*)$ (and a measurement of $P_τ(D)$) on the various possible NP explanations. Furthermore, we show that the measurement of $R_{D^*}$ in bins of $q^2$, the square of the invariant mass of the lepton-neutrino system, along with the information on $τ$ polarisation and the forward-backward asymmetry of the $τ$ lepton, can completely distinguish the various operator structures. We also provide the full expressions of the double differential decay widths for the individual $τ$ helicities in the presence of all the 10 dimension-6 operators that can contribute to these decays.

Diagnosing New Physics in $b \to c \, τ\, ν_τ$ decays in the light of the recent BaBar result

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported the measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions of $\bar{B} \to D(D^{*}) τ^{-} \bar{ν_τ}$ to $\bar{B} \to D(D^{*}) \ell^{-} \bar{ν_\ell}$ which deviates from the Standard Model prediction by 2$σ$(2.7$σ$). This deviation goes up to 3.4$σ$ level when the two measurements in the $D$ and $D^*$ modes are taken together and could indicate new physics. Using an effective Lagrangian for the new physics we study the implication of these results and calculate other observables that can shed light on the nature of the new physics. We show that the measurements of the forward-backward asymmetries and the $τ$ and $D^*$ polarization fractions can distinguish among the various couplings of the new physics operators.

Lepton Electric Dipole Moment and Strong CP Violation

Contribution of the strong CP angle, $\barθ$, to the Wilson Coefficients of electron and muon electric dipole moment (EDM) operators are discussed. Previously, $\barθ$ contribution to the electron EDM operator was calculated by Choi and Hong. However, the effect of CP-violating three meson coupling was missing there. We include this missing contribution for the first time in the literature, and reevaluate the Wilson coefficients of the lepton EDM operator. We obtain $d_e = - (2.2-8.6) \times 10^{-28} \barθ$ e-cm which is 15 - 70 % of the result obtained in Choi and Hong. We also estimated the muon EDM as $d_μ= - (0.5-1.8) \times 10^{-25} \barθ$ e-cm. Using $|\barθ| \lesssim 10^{-10}$ suggested by the neutron EDM measurements, we obtain $|d_e| \lesssim 8.6 \times 10^{-38}$ e-cm and $|d_μ| \lesssim 1.8 \times 10^{-35}$ e-cm. The $\barθ$ contribution to the muon EDM is much below the sensitivities of the current and near future experiments. Our result shows that the $\barθ$ contribution to $d_{e,μ}$ can be larger than the CKM contributions by many orders of magnitude.

Note on gauge and gravitational anomalies of discrete $Z_N$ symmetries

In this note, we discuss the consistency conditions which a discrete $Z_N$ symmetry should satisfy in order that it is not violated by gauge and gravitational instantons. As examples, we enlist all the $Z_N$ ${\cal R}$-symmetries as well as non-${\cal R}$ $Z_N$ symmetries (N=2,3,4) in the minimally supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) that are free from gauge and gravitational anomalies. We show that there exists non-anomalous discrete symmetries that forbid Baryon number violation up to dimension 6 level (in superspace). We also observe that there exists no non-anomalous $Z_3$ ${\cal R}$-symmetry in the MSSM. Furthermore, we point out that in a theory with one Majorana spin 3/2 gravitino, a large class of $Z_4$ ${\cal R}$-symmetries are violated in the presence of Eguchi-Hanson (EH) gravitational instanton. This is also in general true for higher $Z_N$ ${\cal R}$-symmetries. We also notice that in 4 dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity, the global $U(1)$ ${\cal R}$-symmetry is always violated by the EH instanton irrespective of the matter content of the theory.

Explaining the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ anomalies

Recent LHCb results on $R_{K^*}$, the ratio of the branching fractions of $B \to K^* μ^+ μ^-$ to that of $B \to K^* e^+ e^-$, for the dilepton invariant mass bins $q^2 \equiv m_{\ell\ell}^2 = [0.045 - 1.1]$ GeV$^2$ and $[1.1 - 6]$ GeV$^2$ show approximately $2.5 σ$ deviations from the corresponding Standard Model prediction in each of the bins. This, when combined with the measurement of $R_K \, (q^2=[1-6]\, \rm GeV^2)$, a similar ratio for the decay to a pseudo scalar meson, highly suggests for lepton non-universal new physics in semi-leptonic $B$ meson decays. In this work, we perform a model independent analysis of these potential new physics signals and identify the operators that do the best job in satisfying all these measurements. We show that heavy new physics, giving rise to $q^2$ independent local 4-Fermi operators of scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector or axial-vector type, is unable to explain all the three measurements simultaneously, in particular $R_{K^*}$ in the bin [0.045 - 1.1], within their experimental $1σ$ regions. We point out the possibility to explain $R_{K^*}$ in the low bin by an additional light ($\lesssim 20 \, \rm MeV$) vector boson with appropriate coupling strengths to ($\bar b \, s$) and ($\bar e \, e$).

Role of Tensor operators in $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$

The recent LHCb measurement of $R_{K^*}$ in two $q^2$ bins, when combined with the earlier measurement of $R_K$, strongly suggests lepton flavour non-universal new physics in semi-leptonic $B$ meson decays. Motivated by these intriguing hints of new physics, several authors have considered vector, axial vector, scalar and pseudo scalar operators as possible explanations of these measurements. However, tensor operators have widely been neglected in this context. In this paper, we consider the effect of tensor operators in $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$. We find that, unlike other local operators, tensor operators can comfortably produce both of $R_{K^*} ^{\rm low}$ and $R_{K^*} ^{\rm central}$ close to their experimental central values. However, a simultaneous explanation of $R_K$ is not possible with only Tensor operators, and other vector or axial vector operators are needed. In fact, we find that combination of vector and tensor operators can provide simultaneous explanations of all the anomalies comfortably at the $1 σ$ level, a scenario which is hard to achieve with only vector or axial vector operators. We also comment on the compatibility of the various new physics solutions with the measurements of the inclusive decay $B_d \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$.

Extending the Analysis of Electroweak Precision Constraints in Composite Higgs Models

In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the Electroweak Precision Observables (EWPO) in composite Higgs models based on the coset $SO(5)/SO(4)$. In our study we include both the fermionic top partners and the spin-1 resonances and consider their possible interplay as well. In order to achieve calculability we use the assumptions of i) partial Ultra Violet Completion (PUVC) following arXiv:1109.1570 and, ii) absence of sizeable effects from physics above the cut-off. Apart from the EWPO, we also take into account the constraints from the top quark, $Z$ and the Higgs boson masses whenever they can be predicted in terms of the model parameters. After presenting our analytic results (often, in certain limits) and discussing their symmetry properties, we also perform detailed fits of the model parameters following the Bayesian approach. We show the posterior probability distributions of the parameters in various scenarios and provide with analytic understanding whenever possible. We find that in certain cases the EWPO allow the compositeness scale to lie well below $1$ TeV. Moreover, fermionic top partners of mass around $1$ TeV and spin-1 resonances of mass around $2-3$ TeV are consistent with the precision data.
