Stabilization by rough noise for an epitaxial growth model

In this article we study a model from epitaxial thin-film growth. It was originally introduced as a phenomenological model of growth in the presence of a Schwoebbel barrier, where diffusing particles on a terrace are not allowed to jump down at the boundary. Nevertheless, we show that the presence of arbitrarily small space-time white noise due to fluctuations in the incoming particles surprisingly eliminates all nonlinear interactions in the model and thus has the potential to stabilize the dynamics and suppress the growth of hills in these models.

Numerical Study of a Surface Growth Model with Singular Noise

We study a stochastic model for epitaxial thin-film growth driven by spatially rough additive noise in a regime where the noise is singular and regularization via truncation in Fourier space is used to give a meaning to the solution, leading to a vanishing nonlinearity in the limit. In order to study this phenomenon numerically, the nonlinearity is discretized by a spectral Galerkin projection, while time integration is performed with an exponential Euler scheme. For roughness stronger than space-time white noise, we derive strong error estimates in $L^p(Ω;C([0,T];\mathcal H^1))$ that display explicitly the interaction between the spatial cut-off, the time step, and the decay of the nonlinear current. We also quantify the growth of the truncated stochastic convolution and the corresponding vanishing rate of the nonlinearity. Numerical experiments illustrate the transition from persistent hill formation to noise-dominated dynamics as the roughness parameter increases.

Numerical approximation of nonlinear fourth-order SPDEs with additive space-time white noise

We consider the strong numerical approximation for a fourth-order stochastic nonlinear SPDE driven by space-time white noise on {$d=1,2,3$}-dimensional torus. We consider its full discretisation with a spectral Galerkin scheme in space and Euler scheme in time. We show the convergence with almost spatial rate $2-\frac{d}{2}$ and $\frac{6-d}{4}$-temporal rate obtained mainly via \it{Stochastic Sewing} technique.

On the approximation of finite-time Lyapunov exponents for the stochastic Burgers equation

We analyze stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with quadratic nonlinearities close to a change of stability. To this aim we compute finite-time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs), observing a change of sign based on the interplay between the distance towards the bifurcation and the noise intensity. A technical challenge is to provide a suitable control of the nonlinear terms coupling the dominant and stable modes of the SPDE and of the corresponding linearization. In order to illustrate our results we apply them to the stochastic Burgers equation.

Effective dynamics of interfaces for nonlinear SPDEs driven by multiplicative white noise

In the present work, we investigate the dynamics of the infinite-dimensional stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) with multiplicative white noise. We derive the effective equation on the approximate slow manifold in detail by utilizing a finite-dimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) describing the motion of interfaces. In particular, we verify the equivalence between the full SPDE and the coupled system under small stochastic perturbations. Moreover, we apply our results to effective dynamics of stochastic models with multiplicative white noise, illustrated with four examples on the stochastic damped wave equation, the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation, the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation.

Finite-time Lyapunov exponents for SPDEs with fractional noise

We estimate the finite-time Lyapunov exponents for a stochastic partial differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion (fbm) with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$ close to a bifurcation of pitchfork type. We characterize regions depending on the distance from bifurcation, the Hurst parameter of the fbm and the noise strength where finite-time Lyapunov exponents are positive and thus indicate a change of stability. The results on finite-time Lyapunov exponents are novel also for SDEs perturbed by fractional noise.

Singular limits for stochastic equations

We study singular limits of stochastic evolution equations in the interplay of disappearing strength of the noise and insufficient regularity, where the equation in the limit with noise would not be defined due to lack of regularity. We recover previously known results on vanishing small noise with increasing roughness, but our main focus is to study for fixed noise the singular limit where the leading order differential operator in the equation may vanish. Although the noise is disappearing in the limit, additional deterministic terms appear due to renormalization effects. We separate the analysis of the equation from the convergence of stochastic terms and give a general framework for the main error estimates. This first reduces the result to bounds on a residual and in a second step to various bounds on the stochastic convolution. Moreover, as examples we apply our result to the a singularly regularized Allen-Cahn equation with a vanishing Bilaplacian, and the Cahn-Hilliard/Allen-Cahn homotopy with space-time white noise in two spatial dimensions.

Bifurcation theory for SPDEs: finite-time Lyapunov exponents and amplitude equations

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation close to bifurcation of pitchfork type, where a one-dimensional space changes its stability. For finite-time Lyapunov exponents we characterize regions depending on the distance from bifurcation and the noise strength where finite-time Lyapunov exponents are positive and thus detect bifurcations. One technical tool is the reduction of the essential dynamics of the infinite dimensional stochastic system to a simple ordinary stochastic differential equation, which is valid close to the bifurcation.

Amplitude equations for SPDEs driven by fractional additive noise with small Hurst parameter

We study stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with potentially very rough fractional noise with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$. Close to a change of stability measured with a small parameter $\varepsilon$, we rely on the natural separation of time-scales and establish a simplified description of the essential dynamics. We prove that up to an error term bounded by a power of $\varepsilon$ depending on the Hurst parameter we can approximate the solution of the SPDE in first order by an SDE, the so called amplitude equation, and in second order by a fast infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. To this aim we need to establish an explicit averaging result for stochastic integrals driven by rough fractional noise for small Hurst parameters.

Continuous time limit of the stochastic ensemble Kalman inversion: Strong convergence analysis

The Ensemble Kalman inversion (EKI) method is a method for the estimation of unknown parameters in the context of (Bayesian) inverse problems. The method approximates the underlying measure by an ensemble of particles and iteratively applies the ensemble Kalman update to evolve (the approximation of the) prior into the posterior measure. For the convergence analysis of the EKI it is common practice to derive a continuous version, replacing the iteration with a stochastic differential equation. In this paper we validate this approach by showing that the stochastic EKI iteration converges to paths of the continuous-time stochastic differential equation by considering both the nonlinear and linear setting, and we prove convergence in probability for the former, and convergence in moments for the latter. The methods employed can also be applied to the analysis of more general numerical schemes for stochastic differential equations in general.

Modulation and amplitude equations on bounded domains for nonlinear SPDEs driven by cylindrical α-stable Lévy processes

In the present work, we establish the approximation of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by cylindrical α-stable Lévy processes via modulation or amplitude equations. We study SPDEs with a cubic nonlinearity, where the deterministic equation is close to a change of stability of the trivial solution. The natural separation of time-scales close to this bifurcation allows us to obtain an amplitude equation describing the essential dynamics of the bifurcating pattern, thus reducing the original infinite dimensional dynamics to a simpler finite-dimensional effective dynamics. In the presence of a multiplicative stable Lévy noise that preserves the constant trivial solution we study the impact of noise on the approximation. In contrast to Gaussian noise, where non-dominant pattern are uniformly small in time due to averaging effects, large jumps in the Lévy noise might lead to large error terms, and thus new estimates are needed to take this into account.

Stochastic turbulence for Burgers equation driven by cylindrical Lévy process

This work is devoted to investigating stochastic turbulence for the fluid flow in one-dimensional viscous Burgers equation perturbed by Lévy space-time white noise with the periodic boundary condition. We rigorously discuss the regularity of solutions and their statistical quantities in this stochastic dynamical system. The quantities are such as the moment estimate, the structure function and the energy spectrum of the turbulent velocity field. Furthermore, we provide qualitative and quantitative properties of the stochastic Burgers equation when the kinematic viscosity ν tends towards zero. The inviscid limit describes the strong stochastic turbulence.

Kink motion for the one-dimensional stochastic Allen-Cahn equation

We study the kink motion for the one-dimensional stochastic Allen-Cahn equation and its mass conserving counterpart. Using a deterministic slow manifold, in the sharp interface limit for sufficiently small noise strength we derive an explicit stochastic differential equation for the motion of the interfaces, which is valid as long as the solution stays close to the manifold. On a relevant time-scale, where interfaces move at most by the minimal allowed distance between interfaces, we show that the kinks behave approximately like the driving Wiener-process projected onto the slow manifold, while in the mass-conserving case they are additionally coupled via the mass constraint.

The impact of white noise on a supercritical bifurcation in the Swift-Hohenberg equation

We consider the impact of additive Gaussian white noise on a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation in an unbounded domain. As an example we focus on the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation with polynomial nonlinearity. Here we identify the order where small noise first impacts the bifurcation. Using an approximation via modulation equations, we provide a tool to analyse how the noise influences the dynamics close to a change of stability.

The impact of multiplicative noise in SPDEs close to bifurcation via amplitude equations

This article deals with the approximation of a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) via amplitude equations. We consider an SPDE with a cubic nonlinearity perturbed by a general multiplicative noise that preserves the constant trivial solution and we study the dynamics around it for the deterministic equation being close to a bifurcation. Based on the separation of time-scales close to a change of stability, we rigorously derive an amplitude equation describing the dynamics of the bifurcating pattern. This allows us to approximate the original infinite dimensional dynamics by a simpler effective dynamics associated with the solution of the amplitude equation. To illustrate the abstract result we apply it to a simple one-dimensional stochastic Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Modulation equation and SPDEs on unbounded domains

We consider the approximation via modulation equations for nonlinear SPDEs on unbounded domains with additive space time white noise. Close to a bifurcation an infinite band of eigenvalues changes stability, and we study the impact of small space-time white noise on this bifurcation. As a first example we study the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation on the whole real line. Here due to the weak regularity of solutions the standard methods for modulation equations fail, and we need to develop new tools to treat the approximation. As an additional result we sketch the proof for local existence and uniqueness of solutions for the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg and the complex Ginzburg Landau equations on the whole real line in weighted spaces that allow for unboundedness at infinity of solutions, which is natural for translation invariant noise like space-time white noise. Moreover we use energy estimates to show that solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equation are Hölder continuous and have moments in those functions spaces. This gives just enough regularity to proceed with the error estimates of the approximation result.

Stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation in higher space dimensions: The motion of bubbles

We study the stochastic motion of a droplet in a stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation in the sharp interface limit for sufficiently small noise. The key ingredient in the proof is a deterministic slow manifold, where we show its stability for long times under small stochastic perturbations. We also give a rigorous stochastic differential equation for the motion of the center of the droplet.

Well Posedness and Convergence Analysis of the Ensemble Kalman Inversion

The ensemble Kalman inversion is widely used in practice to estimate unknown parameters from noisy measurement data. Its low computational costs, straightforward implementation, and non-intrusive nature makes the method appealing in various areas of application. We present a complete analysis of the ensemble Kalman inversion with perturbed observations for a fixed ensemble size when applied to linear inverse problems. The well-posedness and convergence results are based on the continuous time scaling limits of the method. The resulting coupled system of stochastic differential equations allows to derive estimates on the long-time behaviour and provides insights into the convergence properties of the ensemble Kalman inversion. We view the method as a derivative free optimization method for the least-squares misfit functional, which opens up the perspective to use the method in various areas of applications such as imaging, groundwater flow problems, biological problems as well as in the context of the training of neural networks.
