Symmetries of Monocoronal Tilings

The vertex corona of a vertex of some tiling is the vertex together with the adjacent tiles. A tiling where all vertex coronae are congruent is called monocoronal. We provide a classification of monocoronal tilings in the Euclidean plane and derive a list of all possible symmetry groups of monocoronal tilings. In particular, any monocoronal tiling with respect to direct congruence is crystallographic, whereas any monocoronal tiling with respect to congruence (reflections allowed) is either crystallographic or it has a one-dimensional translation group. Furthermore, bounds on the number of the dimensions of the translation group of monocoronal tilings in higher dimensional Euclidean space are obtained.

Some Properties of Lattice Substitution Systems

If a partition of a lattice in R^d is selfsimilar, it is called lattice substitution system (LSS). Such sets represent nonperiodic, but highly ordered structures. An important property of such structures is, whether they are model sets or not (equivalently, whether they are pure point diffractive or not). In this paper two conditions are given, which can be used to show that a given lattice substitution system does not consist of model sets.

Dynamical properties of almost repetitive Delone sets

We consider the collection of uniformly discrete point sets in Euclidean space equipped with the vague topology. For a point set in this collection, we characterise minimality of an associated dynamical system by almost repetitivity of the point set. We also provide linear versions of almost repetitivity which lead to uniquely ergodic systems. Apart from linearly repetitive point sets, examples are given by periodic point sets with almost periodic modulations, and by point sets derived from primitive substitution tilings of finite local complexity with respect to the Euclidean group with dense tile orientations.

Cohomology of the Pinwheel Tiling

We provide a computation of the cohomology of the Pinwheel tiling using the Anderson-Putnam complex. A border forcing version of the Pinwheel tiling is constructed that allows an explicit construction of the complex for the quotient of the continuous hull by the circle. The final result is given using a spectral sequence argument of Barge, Diamond, Hunton, and Sadun.

Parallelogram tilings, Worms and Finite Orientations

This paper studies properties of tilings of the plane by parallelograms. In particular it is established that in parallelogram tilings using a finite number of shapes all tiles occur in only finitely many orientations.

Selfdual Substitutions in Dimension One

There are several notions of the 'dual' of a word/tile substitution. We show that the most common ones are equivalent for substitutions in dimension one, where we restrict ourselves to the case of two letters/tiles. Furthermore, we obtain necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions for substitutions being selfdual in this case. Since many connections between the different notions of word/tile substitution are discussed, this paper may also serve as a survey paper on this topic.

Ten colours in quasiperiodic and regular hyperbolic tilings

Colour symmetries with ten colours are presented for different tilings. In many cases, the existence of these colourings were predicted by group theoretical methods. Only in a few cases explicit constructions were known, sometimes using combination of two-colour and five-colour symmetries. Here we present explicit constructions of several of the predicted colourings for the first time, and discuss them in contrast to already known colourings with ten colours.

Counting perfect colourings of plane regular tilings

A first step in investigating colour symmetries of periodic and nonperiodic patterns is determining the number of colours which allow perfect colourings of the pattern under consideration. A perfect colouring is one where each symmetry of the uncoloured pattern induces a global permutation of the colours. Two cases are distinguished: Either perfect colourings with respect to all symmetries, or with respect to orientation preserving symmetries only (no reflections). For the important class of colourings of regular tilings (and some Laves tilings) of the Euclidean or hyperbolic plane, this mainly combinatorial question is addressed here using group theoretical methods.

About Substitution Tilings with Statistical Circular Symmetry

Two results about equidistribution of tile orientations in primitive substitution tilings are stated, one for finitely many, one for infinitely many orientations. Furthermore, consequences for the associated diffraction spectra and the dynamical systems are discussed.

Substitution tilings with statistical circular symmetry

Two new series of substitution tilings are introduced in which the tiles appear in infinitely many orientations. It is shown that several properties of the well-known pinwheel tiling do also hold for these new examples, and, in fact, for all substitution tilings showing tiles in infinitely many orientations.

Self-dual tilings with respect to star-duality

The concept of star-duality is described for self-similar cut-and-project tilings in arbitrary dimensions. This generalises Thurston's concept of a Galois-dual tiling. The dual tilings of the Penrose tilings as well as the Ammann-Beenker tilings are calculated. Conditions for a tiling to be self-dual are obtained.

A radial analogue of Poisson's summation formula with applications to powder diffraction and pinwheel patterns

Diffraction images with continuous rotation symmetry arise from amorphous systems, but also from regular crystals when investigated by powder diffraction. On the theoretical side, pinwheel patterns and their higher dimensional generalisations display such symmetries as well, in spite of being perfectly ordered. We present first steps and results towards a general frame to investigate such systems, with emphasis on statistical properties that are helpful to understand and compare the diffraction images. An alternative substitution rule for the pinwheel tiling, with two different prototiles, permits the derivation of several combinatorial and spectral properties of this still somewhat enigmatic example. These results are compared with properties of the square lattice and its powder diffraction.

Pinwheel patterns and powder diffraction

Pinwheel patterns and their higher dimensional generalisations display continuous circular or spherical symmetries in spite of being perfectly ordered. The same symmetries show up in the corresponding diffraction images. Interestingly, they also arise from amorphous systems, and also from regular crystals when investigated by powder diffraction. We present first steps and results towards a general frame to investigate such systems, with emphasis on statistical properties that are helpful to understand and compare the diffraction images. We concentrate on properties that are accessible via an alternative substitution rule for the pinwheel tiling, based on two different prototiles. Due to striking similarities, we compare our results with the toy model for the powder diffraction of the square lattice.

SCD Patterns Have Singular Diffraction

Among the many families of nonperiodic tilings known so far, SCD tilings are still a bit mysterious. Here, we determine the diffraction spectra of point sets derived from SCD tilings and show that they have no absolutely continuous part, that they have a uniformly discrete pure point part on the z-axis, and that they are otherwise supported on a set of concentric cylinder surfaces around this axis. For SCD tilings with additional properties, more detailed results are given.
