Eigenvalue bounds in the gaps of Schrodinger operators and Jacobi matrices

We consider $C=A+B$ where $A$ is selfadjoint with a gap $(a,b)$ in its spectrum and $B$ is (relatively) compact. We prove a general result allowing $B$ of indefinite sign and apply it to obtain a $(δV)^{d/2}$ bound for perturbations of suitable periodic Schrodinger operators and a (not quite)Lieb-Thirring bound for perturbations of algebro-geometric almost periodic Jacobi matrices.

Bounds on the spectral shift function and the density of states

We study spectra of Schrödinger operators on $\RR^d$. First we consider a pair of operators which differ by a compactly supported potential, as well as the corresponding semigroups. We prove almost exponential decay of the singular values $μ_n$ of the difference of the semigroups as $n\to \infty$ and deduce bounds on the spectral shift function of the pair of operators. Thereafter we consider alloy type random Schrödinger operators. The single site potential $u$ is assumed to be non-negative and of compact support. The distributions of the random coupling constants are assumed to be Hölder continuous. Based on the estimates for the spectral shift function, we prove a Wegner estimate which implies Hölder continuity of the integrated density of states.

Variational Estimates for Discrete Schrödinger Operators with Potentials of Indefinite Sign

Let $H$ be a one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator. We prove that if $σ_{\ess} (H)\subset [-2,2]$, then $H-H_0$ is compact and $σ_{\ess}(H)=[-2,2]$. We also prove that if $H_0 + \frac14 V^2$ has at least one bound state, then the same is true for $H_0 +V$. Further, if $H_0 + \frac14 V^2$ has infinitely many bound states, then so does $H_0 +V$. Consequences include the fact that for decaying potential $V$ with $\liminf_{|n|\to\infty} |nV(n)| > 1$, $H_0 +V$ has infinitely many bound states; the signs of $V$ are irrelevant. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed.

Bound States and the Szego Condition for Jacobi Matrices and Schrodinger Operators

For Jacobi matrices with a_n = 1+(-1)^n alpha n^{-gamma}, b_n = (-1)^n beta n^{-gamma}, we study bound states and the SzegHo condition. We provide a new proof of Nevai's result that if gamma > 1/2, the Szego condition holds, which works also if one replaces (-1)^n by cos(mu n). We show that if alpha = 0, beta not equal to 0, and gamma < 1/2, the Szego condition fails. We also show that if gamma = 1, alpha and beta are small enough (beta^2 + 8 alpha^2 < 1/24 will do), then the Jacobi matrix has finitely many bound states (for alpha = 0, beta large, it has infinitely many).

Lieb-Thirring Inequalities for Jacobi Matrices

For a Jacobi matrix J on l^2(Z_+) with Ju(n)=a_{n-1} u(n-1) + b_n u(n) + a_n u(n+1), we prove that \sum_{|E|>2} (E^2 -4)^{1/2} \leq \sum_n |b_n| + 4\sum_n |a_n -1|. We also prove bounds on higher moments and some related results in higher dimension.

Finite-Volume Fractional-Moment Criteria for Anderson Localization

A technically convenient signature of localization, exhibited by discrete operators with random potentials, is exponential decay of the fractional moments of the Green function within the appropriate energy ranges. Known implications include: spectral localization, absence of level repulsion, strong form of dynamical localization, and a related condition which plays a significant role in the quantization of the Hall conductance in two-dimensional Fermi gases. We present a family of finite-volume criteria which, under some mild restrictions on the distribution of the potential, cover the regime where the fractional moment decay condition holds. The constructive criteria permit to establish this condition at spectral band edges, provided there are sufficient `Lifshitz tail estimates' on the density of states. They are also used here to conclude that the fractional moment condition, and thus the other manifestations of localization, are valid throughout the regime covered by the ``multiscale analysis''. In the converse direction, the analysis rules out fast power-law decay of the Green functions at mobility edges.

Continuity properties of Schrödinger semigroups with magnetic fields

The objects of the present study are one-parameter semigroups generated by Schrödinger operators with fairly general electromagnetic potentials. More precisely, we allow scalar potentials from the Kato class and impose on the vector potentials only local Kato-like conditions. The configuration space is supposed to be an arbitrary open subset of multi-dimensional Euclidean space; in case that it is a proper subset, the Schrödinger operator is rendered symmetric by imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions. We discuss the continuity of the image functions of the semigroup and show local-norm-continuity of the semigroup in the potentials. Finally, we prove that the semigroup has a continuous integral kernel given by a Brownian-bridge expectation. Altogether, the article is meant to extend some of the results in B. Simon's landmark paper [Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. (N.S.) {\bf 7}, 447--526 (1982)] to non-zero vector potentials and more general configuration spaces.

The Fate of Lifshitz Tails in Magnetic Fields

We investigate the integrated density of states of the Schrödinger operator in the Euclidean plane with a perpendicular constant magnetic field and a random potential. For a Poisson random potential with a non-negative algebraically decaying single-impurity potential we prove that the leading asymptotic behaviour for small energies is always given by the corresponding classical result in contrast to the case of vanishing magnetic field. We also show that the integrated density of states of the operator restricted to the eigenspace of any Landau level exhibits the same behaviour. For the lowest Landau level, this is in sharp contrast to the case of a Poisson random potential with a delta-function impurity potential.
