Resonant two-site tunnelling dynamics of bosons in a tilted optical superlattice

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D Bose-Hubbard model in a gradient potential and a superlattice, beginning from a deep Mott insulator regime with an average filling of one particle per site. Studying a quench that is near resonance to tunnelling of the particles over two lattice sites, we show how a spin model emerges consisting of two coupled Ising chains that are coupled by interaction terms in a staggered geometry. We compare and contrast the behavior in this case with that in a previously studied case where the resonant tunnelling was over a single site. Using optimized tensor network techniques to calculate finite temperature behavior of the model, as well as finite size scaling for the ground state, we conclude that the universality class of the phase transition for the coupled chains is that of a tricritical Ising point. We also investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics after the quench in the vicinity of the resonance and compare dynamics with recent experiments realized without the superlattice geometry. This model is directly realizable in current experiments, and reflects a new general way to realize spin models with ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Spin-models, dynamics and criticality with atoms in tilted optical superlattices

We show that atoms in tilted optical superlattices provide a platform for exploring coupled spin chains of forms that are not present in other systems. In particular, using a period-2 superlattice in 1D, we show that coupled Ising spin chains with XZ and ZZ spin coupling terms can be engineered. We use optimized tensor network techniques to explore the criticality and non-equilibrium dynamics in these models, finding a tricritical Ising point in regimes that are accessible in current experiments. These setups are ideal for studying low-entropy physics, as initial entropy is "frozen-out" in realizing the spin models, and provide an example of the complex critical behaviour that can arise from interaction-projected models.

Non-Topological Majorana Zero Modes in Inhomogeneous Spin Ladders

We show that the coupling of homogeneous Heisenberg spin-1/2 ladders in different phases leads to the formation of interfacial zero energy Majorana bound states. Unlike Majorana bound states at the interfaces of topological quantum wires, these states are void of topological protection and generally susceptible to local perturbations of the host spin system. However, a key message of our work is that in practice they show a high degree of resilience over wide parameter ranges which may make them interesting candidates for applications.

Quantum quench in the attractive regime of the sine-Gordon model

We study the dynamics of the sine-Gordon model after a quantum quench into the attractive regime, where the spectrum consists of solitons, antisolitons and breathers. In particular, we analyse the time-dependent expectation value of the vertex operator, $\exp\left({\rm i}βΦ/2\right)$, starting from an initial state in the "squeezed state form" corresponding to integrable boundary conditions. Using an expansion in terms of exact form factors, we compute analytically the leading contributions to this expectation value at late times. We show that form factors containing breathers only contribute to the late-time dynamics if the initial state exhibits zero-momentum breather states. The leading terms at late times exponentially decay, and we compute the different decay rates. In addition, the late-time contributions from the zero-momentum breathers display oscillatory behaviour, with the oscillation frequency given by the breather mass renormalised by interaction effects. Using our result, we compute the low-energy contributions to the power spectrum of the vertex operator. The oscillatory terms in the expectation value are shown to produce smooth peaks in the power spectrum located near the values of the bare breather masses.

Topological order in the Kitaev/Majorana chain in the presence of disorder and interactions

We study the combined effect of interactions and disorder on topological order in one dimension. To this end we consider a generalized Kitaev chain including fermion-fermion interactions and disorder in the chemical potential. We determine the phase diagram by performing density-matrix renormalization group calculations on the corresponding spin-1/2 chain. We find that moderate disorder or repulsive interactions individually stabilize the topological order, which remains valid for their combined effect. However, both repulsive and attractive interactions lead to a suppression of the topological phase at strong disorder.

Interaction effects in a microscopic quantum wire model with strong spin-orbit interaction

We investigate the effect of strong interactions on the spectral properties of quantum wires with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a magnetic field, using a combination of Matrix Product State and bosonization techniques. Quantum wires with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction and magnetic field exhibit a partial gap in one-half of the conducting modes. Such systems have attracted wide-spread experimental and theoretical attention due to their unusual physical properties, among which are spin-dependent transport, or a topological superconducting phase when under the proximity effect of an s-wave superconductor. As a microscopic model for the quantum wire we study an extended Hubbard model with spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman field. We obtain spin resolved spectral densities from the real-time evolution of excitations, and calculate the phase diagram. We find that interactions increase the pseudo gap at $k = 0$ and thus also enhance the Majorana-supporting phase and stabilize the helical spin order. Furthermore, we calculate the optical conductivity and compare it with the low energy spiral Luttinger Liquid result, obtained from field theoretical calculations. With interactions, the optical conductivity is dominated by an excotic excitation of a bound soliton-antisoliton pair known as a breather state. We visualize the oscillating motion of the breather state, which could provide the route to their experimental detection in e.g. cold atom experiments.

Observation of spin-charge separation and boundary bound states via the local density of states

We numerically calculate the local density of states (LDOS) of a one-dimensional Mott insulator with open boundaries, which is modelled microscopically by a (extended) Hubbard chain at half filling. In the Fourier transform of the LDOS we identify several dispersing features corresponding to propagating charge and spin degrees of freedom, thus providing a visualisation of the spin-charge separation in the system. We also consider the effect of an additional boundary potential, which, if sufficiently strong, leads to the formation of a boundary bound state which is clearly visible in the LDOS as a non-dispersing feature inside the Mott gap.

Time evolution during and after finite-time quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising chain

We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.

On rational R-matrices with adjoint SU(n) symmetry

Using the representation theory of Yangians we construct the rational R-matrix which takes values in the adjoint representation of SU(n). From this we derive an integrable SU(n) spin chain with lattice spins transforming under the adjoint representation. However, the resulting Hamiltonian is found to be non-Hermitian.

Time evolution during and after finite-time quantum quenches in Luttinger liquids

We consider finite-time quantum quenches in the interacting Tomonaga--Luttinger model, for example time-dependent changes of the nearest-neighbour interactions for spinless fermions. We use the exact solutions for specific protocols including the linear and cosine ramps (or, more generally, periodic pumping). We study the dynamics of the total and kinetic energy as well as the Green functions during as well as after the quench. For the latter we find that the light-cone picture remains applicable, however, the propagating front is delayed as compared to the sudden quench. We extract the universal behaviour of the Green functions and in particular provide analytic, non-perturbative results for the delay applicable to quenches of short to moderate duration but arbitrary time dependency.

Quantum quenches in integrable systems: Constraints from factorisation

We consider quantum quenches in integrable systems where complete factorisation of scattering, transmission and particle creation processes is assumed at all times. We show that under this assumption, the simultaneous transmission and creation of particles is impossible in generic interacting theories.

Exact ground states and topological order in interacting Kitaev/Majorana chains

We study a system of interacting spinless fermions in one dimension which, in the absence of interactions, reduces to the Kitaev chain [A. Yu Kitaev, Phys.-Usp. \textbf{44}, 131 (2001)]. In the non-interacting case, a signal of topological order appears as zero-energy modes localized near the edges. We show that the exact ground states can be obtained analytically even in the presence of nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions when the on-site (chemical) potential is tuned to a particular function of the other parameters. As with the non-interacting case, the obtained ground states are two-fold degenerate and differ in fermionic parity. We prove the uniqueness of the obtained ground states and show that they can be continuously deformed to the ground states of the non-interacting Kitaev chain without gap closing. We also demonstrate explicitly that there exists a set of operators each of which maps one of the ground states to the other with opposite fermionic parity. These operators can be thought of as an interacting generalization of Majorana edge zero modes.

Charge fluctuations in nonlinear heat transport

We show that charge fluctuation processes are crucial for the nonlinear heat conductance through an interacting nanostructure, even far from a resonance. We illustrate this for an Anderson quantum dot accounting for the first two leading orders of the tunneling in a master equation. The often made assumption that off-resonant transport proceeds entirely by virtual occupation of charge states, underlying exchange-scattering models, can fail dramatically for heat transport. The identified energy-transport resonances in the Coulomb blockade regime provide new qualitative information about relaxation processes, for instance by strong negative differential heat conductance relative to the heat current. These can go unnoticed in the charge current, making nonlinear heat-transport spectroscopy with energy-level control a promising experimental tool.

Strongly interacting Majorana modes in an array of Josephson junctions

An array of superconducting islands with semiconducting nanowires in the right regime provides a macroscopic implementation of Kitaev's toy model for Majorana wires. We show that a capacitive coupling between adjacent islands leads to an effective interaction between the Majorana modes. We demonstrate that even though strong repulsive interaction eventually drive the system into a Mott insulating state the competition between the (trivial) band-insulator and the (trivial) Mott insulator leads to an interjacent topological insulating state for arbitrary strong interactions.

Quantum quench in the sine-Gordon model

We consider the time evolution in the repulsive sine-Gordon quantum field theory after the system is prepared in a particular class of initial states. We focus on the time dependence of the one-point function of the semi-local operator $\exp\big(i\ β\ Φ(x)/2\big)$. By using two different methods based on form-factor expansions, we show that this expectation value decays to zero exponentially, and we determine the decay rate by analytical means. Our methods generalise to other correlation functions and integrable models.

Supersymmetry in the Majorana Cooper-Pair Box

Over the years, supersymmetric quantum mechanics has evolved from a toy model of high energy physics to a field of its own. Although various examples of supersymmetric quantum mechanics have been found, systems that have a natural realization are scarce. Here, we show that the extension of the conventional Cooper-pair box by a 4pi-periodic Majorana-Josephson coupling realizes supersymmetry for certain values of the ratio between the conventional Josephson and the Majorana- Josephson coupling strength. The supersymmetry we find is a "hidden" minimally bosonized supersymmetry that provides a non-trivial generalization of the supersymmetry of the free particle and relies crucially on the presence of an anomalous Josephson junction in the system. We show that the resulting degeneracy of the energy levels can be probed directly in a tunneling experiment and discuss the various transport signatures. An observation of the predicted level degeneracy would provide clear evidence for the presence of the anomalous Josephson coupling.

Transport properties of fully screened Kondo models

We study the non-equilibrium transport properties of fully (exactly) screened Kondo quantum dots subject to a finite bias voltage or a finite temperature. Firstly, we calculate the Fermi-liquid coefficients of the conductance for models with arbitrary spin, i.e. its leading behaviour for small bias voltages or temperatures. Secondly, we determine the low-temperature behaviour of the static susceptibility from the exactly known Bethe Ansatz results for the magnetisation. Thirdly, we study the crossover from strong to weak coupling in the spin-1/2 and the spin-1 models coupled to one or two screening channels respectively. Using a real-time renormalisation group method we calculate the static and dynamical spin-spin correlation functions for the spin-1/2 model as well as the linear and differential conductance and the static susceptibility for the spin-1 model. We define various Kondo scales and discuss their relations. We assess the validity of the renormalisation-group treatment by comparing with known results for the temperature dependence of the linear conductance and static susceptibility as well as the Fermi-liquid behaviour at low energies.

Low-energy properties of fractional helical Luttinger liquids

We investigate the low-energy properties of (quasi) helical and fractional helical Luttinger liquids. In particular, we calculate the Drude peak of the optical conductivity, the density of states, as well as charge transport properties of the interacting system with and without attached Fermi liquid leads at small and large (compared to the gap) frequencies. For fractional wires, we find that the low energy tunneling density of states vanishes. The conductance of a fractional helical Luttinger liquid is non-integer. It is independent of the Luttinger parameters in the wire, despite the intricate mixing of charge and spin degrees of freedom, and only depends on the relative locking of charge and spin degrees of freedom.
