Study of Postacceleration Effects in the Coulomb Dissociation of Neutron Halo Nuclei

We investgate the breakup of one-neutron halo nuclei in the Coulomb field of a target nucleus. In the post-form distorted wave Born approximation theory of this reaction, with only Coulomb distortions in the entrance and the outgoing channels, an analytic solution for the breakup $T$-matrix is known. We study this $T$-matrix and the corresponding cross-sections numerically. This formula can be related to the first order semiclassical treatment of the electromagnetic dissociation. This theory contains the electromagnetic interaction between the core and the target nucleus to all orders. We show that higher order effects (including postacceleration) are small in the case of higher beam energies and forward scattering. We investigate the beam energy dependence of the postacceleration effects. They are found to be quite important for smaller beam energies (slow collisions), but almost negligible at larger ones.

Coherent gamma-gamma and gamma-A interactions in very peripheral collisions at relativistic ion colliders

Due to coherence, there are strong electromagnetic fields of short duration in very peripheral collisions. They give rise to photon-photon and photon-nucleus collisions with a high flux up to an invariant mass region hitherto unexplored experimentally. After a general survey of the field equivalent photon numbers and photon-photon luminosities, especially for relativistic heavy ion collisions, are discussed. Special care needs to be taken to include the effects of the strong interaction and nuclear size in this case. Photon-photon and photon-hadron physics at various invariant mass scales are then discussed. The maximum equivalent photon energy in the lab-system (collider frame) are typically of the order of 3 GeV for RHIC and 100 GeV for LHC. Diffractive processes are an important background process. Lepton-pair, especially electron-positron pair production is copious. Due to the strong fields there will be new phenomena, like multiple e+e- pair production. The experimental techniques to select gamma-gamma-processes are finally discussed together with important background processes.

A Realistic Solvable Model for the Coulomb Dissociation of Neutron Halo Nuclei

As a model of a neutron halo nucleus we consider a neutron bound to an inert core by a zero range force. We study the breakup of this simple nucleus in the Coulomb field of a target nucleus. In the post-form DWBA (or, in our simple model CWBA (``Coulomb Wave Born Approximation'')) an analytic solution for the T-matrix is known. We study limiting cases of this T-matrix. As it should be, we recover the Born approximation for weak Coulomb fields (i.e., for the relevant Coulomb parameters much smaller than 1). For strong Coulomb fields, high beam energies, and scattering to the forward region we find a result which is very similar to the Born result. It is only modified by a relative phase (close to 0) between the two terms and a prefactor (close to 1). A similar situation exists for bremsstrahlung emission. This formula can be related to the first order semiclassical treatment of the electromagnetic dissociation. Since our CWBA model contains the electromagnetic interaction between the core and the target nucleus to all orders, this means that higher order effects (including postacceleration effects) are small in the case of high beam energies and forward scattering. Our model also predicts a scaling behavior of the differential cross section, that is, different systems (with different binding energies, beam energies and scattering angles) show the same dependence on two variables x and y.

Electromagnetic Dissociation as a Tool for Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics

Coulomb dissociation is an especially simple and important reaction mechanism. Since the perturbation due to the electric field of the nucleus is exactly known, firm conclusions can be drawn from such measurements. Electromagnetic matrix elements and astrophysical S-factors for radiative capture processes can be extracted from experiments. We describe the basic theory, new results concerning higher order effects in the dissociation of neutron halo nuclei, and briefly review the experimental results obtained up to now. Some new applications of Coulomb dissociation for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure physics are discussed.

Bound-Free Electron-Positron Pair Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the bound-free electron-positron pair production in relativistic heavy ion collisions to different bound states in a full Plane Wave Born Approximation (PWBA) calculation. Exact Dirac wave functions are used for both the bound electron and the free positron in the final states. Results for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider RHIC as well as the forthcoming Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are given. This process is one of the dominant beam loss processes and can become critical for the operation with heavy ions. A simple parameterization is given as well. We compare our results with calculations of other groups.

Production of Low Mass Electron Pairs Due to the Photon-Photon Mechanism in Central Collisions

We calculate the probability for dilepton production in central relativistic heavy ion collisions due to the gamma-gamma mechanism. This is a potential background to more interesting mechanisms. We find that this mechanism is negligible in the CERES experiments. Generally, the contribution due to this mechanism is small in the central region, while it can be large for small invariant masses and forward or backward rapidities. A simple formula based on the equivalent photon approximation and applications to a possible scenario at RHIC are also given.

Bremsstrahlung from Electrons and Positrons in Peripheral Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the spectrum of the bremsstrahlung photons coming from the electrons and positrons, which are produced in the strong electromagnetic fields present in peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions. We compare different approaches, making use of the exact pair production cross section in heavy ion collisions as well as the double equivalent photon approximation.

Photon-Photon and Photon-Hadron Interactions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Colliders

In central collisions at relativistic heavy ion colliders like the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider RHIC/Brookhaven and the Large Hadron Collider LHC (in its heavy ion mode) at CERN/Geneva, one aims at detecting a new form of hadronic matter --- the Quark Gluon Plasma. We discuss here a complementary aspect of these collisions, the very peripheral ones. Due to coherence, there are strong electromagnetic fields of short duration in such collisions. They give rise to photon-photon and photon-nucleus collisions with high flux up to an invariant mass region hitherto unexplored experimentally. After a general survey photon-photon luminosities in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed. Then photon-photon physics at various gamma-gamma-invariant mass scales is discussed. The region of several GeV, relevant for RHIC is dominated by QCD phenomena (meson and vector meson pair production). Invariant masses of up to about 100 GeV can be reached at LHC, and the potential for new physics is discussed. Lepton-pair production, especially electron-positron pair production is copious. Due to the strong fields there will be new phenomena, especially multiple e+e- pair production.

Calculation of Higher Order Effects in Electron-Positron Pair Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We present a calculation of higher order effects for the impact parameter dependent probability for single and multiple electron-positron pairs in (peripheral) relativistic heavy ion collisions. Also total cross sections are given for SPS and RHIC energies. We make use of the expression derived recently by several groups where the summation of all higher orders can be done analytically in the high energy limit. An astonishing result is that the cross section, that is, integrating over all impact parameters, is found to be identical to the lowest-order Born result for symmetric collisions. For the probability itself on the other hand we find rather large effects at small impact parameters compared to the lowest order results, which translate to large effects for the cross section for multiple pair production.

Relativistic Antihydrogen Production

We calculate the production of relativistic antihydrogen atoms by bound-free pair production. The cross section is calculated in the semiclassical approximation (SCA), or equivalently in the plane wave Born approximation (PWBA) using exact Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. We compare our calculations to the equivalent photon approximation (EPA).

Multiple electromagnetic electron positron pair production in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We calculate the cross sections for the production of one and more electron-positron pairs due to the strong electromagnetic fields in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Using the generating functional of fermions in an external field we derive the N-pair amplitude. Neglecting the antisymmetrisation in the final state we find that the total probability to produce N pairs is a Poisson distribution. We calculate total cross sections for the production of one pair in lowest order and also include higher-order corrections from the Poisson distribution up to third order. Furthermore we calculate cross sections for the production of up to five pairs including corrections from the Poisson distribution.

Equivalent Photon Approach to Simultaneous Excitation in Heavy Ion Collision

We apply the Equivalent Photon Approximation to calculate cross sections for the simultaneous excitation of two heavy ions in relativistic collisions. We study especially the excitation of two nuclei to a 1- - state and show that the equations are symmetric with respect to both ions. We also examine the limit in which the excitation energy of one of the nuclei goes to zero, which gives the elastic case. Finally a few remarks about the limits of this approach are made.

Photon-Photon Luminosities in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at LHC Energies

Effective photon-photon luminosities are calculated for various realistic hadron collider scenarios. The main characteristics of photon-photon processes at relativistic heavy-ion colliders are established and compared to the corresponding photon-photon luminosities at electron-positron and future Photon Linear Colliders (PLC). Higher order corrections as well as inelastic processes are discussed. It is concluded that feasible high luminosity Ca-Ca collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are an interesting option for photon-photon physics up to about 100 GeV photon-photon CM energy.

Higher Order Processes in Electromagnetic Production of Electron Positron Pairs in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We study higher-order effects in the electromagnetic production of electron-positron pairs in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Treating the field of the heavy ions as an external field and neglecting the interaction among electrons and positrons, we show that the $N$-pair creation amplitude is the antisymmetrised product of $N$ one-pair creation amplitudes and the vacuum amplitude. Neglecting contributions coming from exchange terms, we show that the total probability for $N$ pairs is approximately a Poisson distribution. We investigate further the structure of the reduced one-pair amplitude, concentrating especially on multiple-particle corrections. We calculate the first of these corrections in second order Magnus theory based on our previous result in second-order Born approximation for impact parameter $b$ zero. Explicit calculations show that the total probability is increased up to 10 \% by this correction for realistic collider parameters. The calculations can also be used to confirm the use of the Poisson distribution for the total probability.
