Quantum Gravity Phenomenology in the Infrared

Quantum gravity effects are traditionally tied to short distances and high energies. In this essay we argue that, perhaps surprisingly, quantum gravity may have important consequences for the phenomenology of the infrared. We center our discussion around a conception of quantum gravity involving a notion of quantum spacetime that arises in metastring theory. This theory allows for an evolution of a cosmological Universe in which string-dual degrees of freedom decouple as the Universe ages. Importantly such an implementation of quantum gravity allows for the inclusion of a fundamental length scale without introducing the fundamental breaking of Lorentz symmetry. The mechanism seems to have potential for an entirely novel source for dark matter/energy. The simplest observational consequences of this scenario may very well be residual infrared modifications that emerge through the evolution of the Universe.

Gravitizing the Quantum

We discuss a new approach to the problem of quantum gravity in which the quantum mechanical structures that are traditionally fixed, such as the Fubini-Study metric in the Hilbert space of states, become dynamical and so implement the idea of gravitizing the quantum. In particular, in this formulation of quantum gravity the quantum geometry is still consistent with the principles of unitarity and also captures fundamental aspects of (quantum) gravity, such as topology change. Furthermore, we address specific ways of testing this new approach to quantum gravity by utilizing multi-path interference and optical lattice atomic clocks.

Infrared Properties of Quantum Gravity: UV/IR Mixing, Gravitizing the Quantum -- Theory and Observation

We discuss the possible appearance of several rather exotic phenomena in quantum gravity, including UV/IR mixing, novel modifications of infrared phenomenology that extend effective field theory approaches, and the relaxation of the usual notions of locality. We discuss the relevance of such concepts in quantum gravity for quantum information science, cosmology and general quantum gravity phenomenology.

Quantum Gravity and Phenomenology: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Vacuum Selection, Emergent Spacetime, and Wormholes

We discuss the relevance of quantum gravity to the frontier questions in high energy phenomenology: the problems of dark matter, dark energy, and vacuum selection as well as the problems of emergent spacetime and wormholes. Dark matter and dark energy phenomenology, and the problem of vacuum selection are discussed within the context of string theory as a model of quantum gravity. Emergent spacetime and wormholes are discussed in a more general context of effective theories of quantum gravity.

First Principles Phenomenology of $H_0$

In this letter we discuss infinite statistics and motivate its role in quantum gravity. Then, we connect infinite statistics to a dynamical form of dark energy, and we obtain an expression for the evolution of the Hubble parameter that we compare to observation. The equation of state parameter $w_{eff} < -1$ in this framework.

Mirror Symmetry, Born Geometry and String Theory

All known string theory models may be obtained as partial fermionization, projection and background Ansätze from the original, purely bosonic string theory. The latter theory in turn has been recently shown to describe a chirally and non-commutatively doubled and manifestly T-dual target spacetime. We show herein that this, so-called metastring theory automatically includes mirror symmetry.

Non-Fermi Liquids, Strange Metals and Quasi-metaparticles

We introduce the concept of quasi-metaparticles based on the theory of metaparticles, the zero modes of the metastring. We apply the concept of quasi-metaparticles to the problem of non-Fermi liquids and the properties of strange metals. In particular, we point out that the quasi-metaparticle Green's function interpolates between the canonical quasi-particle Green's function and the result found in the context of the SYK model, which presents an exactly solvable model without quasiparticles. The linear dependence of resistivity with temperature is reproduced in the SYK limit. Also, the Cooper mechanism is possible in the quasi-metaparticle case. Finally, the new parameter that characterizes quasi-metaparticles can be extracted from ARPES data. Thus, the quasi-metaparticle could be a useful new concept in the study of strange metals and high-temperature superconductivity.

Bulk entropy is crucial to validate the second law of the extended black hole thermodynamics

The extended black hole thermodynamics in which the cosmological constant plays the role of pressure significantly enriches the phase structure of the theory. In order to understand the extended black hole thermodynamics more precisely, we let the value of the cosmological constant vary dynamically via tunneling from one vacuum to another in a black hole induced vacuum decay. In this process, entropy of the matter/energy released by a black hole is crucial to validate the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, without taking this bulk entropy into account, entropy associated with the black hole and cosmological horizons may not always increase. Since the bulk entropy is not represented by the black hole and the cosmological horizons, this result calls for a more careful interpretation of the holographic principle in which environmental effects are taken into account.

On Quantum Gravity and Quantum Gravity Phenomenology

This article summarizes a new approach to quantum gravity based on the concepts of modular spacetime, Born geometry, and metastring theory and their applications to quantum gravity phenomenology. In particular, we discuss a new understanding of dark matter in terms of metaparticles (zero modes of the metastring) and its relation to dark energy (the curvature of dual spacetime) in view of the actual astronomical observations.

Stringy Bubbles Solve de Sitter Troubles

Finding four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime solutions in string theory has been a vexing quest ever since the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe. Building on a recent analysis of bubble-nucleation in the decay of (false-vacuum) AdS backgrounds where the interfacing bubbles themselves exhibit a de Sitter geometry we show that this resonates strongly with a stringy cosmic brane construction that naturally provides for an exponential mass-hierarchy, and localization of both gravity and matter, in addition to an exponentially suppressed positive cosmological constant. Finally, we argue that these scenarios can be realized in terms of a generalization of a small resolution of a conifold singularity in the context of a (Lorentzian) Calabi-Yau 5-fold, where the isolated (Lorentzian) two complex dimensional Fano variety is a four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime.

Exploring self-consistency of the equations of axion electrodynamics in Weyl semimetals

Recent works have provided evidence that an axial anomaly can arise in Weyl semimetals. If this is the case, then the electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals should be governed by the equations of axion electrodynamics. These equations capture both the chiral magnetic and anomalous Hall effects in the limit of linear response, while at higher orders their solutions can provide detectable electromagnetic signatures of the anomaly. In this work, we consider three versions of axion electrodynamics that have been proposed in the Weyl semimetal literature. These versions differ in the form of the chiral magnetic term and in whether or not the axion is treated as a dynamical field. In each case, we look for solutions to these equations for simple sample geometries subject to applied external fields. We find that in the case of a linear chiral magnetic term generated by a non-dynamical axion, self-consistent solutions can generally be obtained. In this case, the magnetic field inside of the Weyl semimetal can be magnified significantly, providing a testable signature for experiments. Self-consistent solutions can also be obtained for dynamical axions, but only in cases where the chiral magnetic term vanishes identically. Finally, for a nonlinear form of the chiral magnetic term frequently considered in the literature, we find that there are no self-consistent solutions aside from a few special cases.

Neutrino Oscillations at JUNO, the Born Rule, and Sorkin's Triple Path Interference

We argue that neutrino oscillations at JUNO offer a unique opportunity to study Sorkin's triple-path interference, which is predicted to be zero in canonical quantum mechanics by virtue of the Born rule. In particular, we compute the expected bounds on triple-path interference at JUNO and demonstrate that they are comparable to those already available from electromagnetic probes. Furthermore, the neutrino probe of the Born rule is much more direct due to an intrinsic independence from any boundary conditions, whereas such dependence on boundary conditions is always present in the case of electromagnetic probes. Thus, neutrino oscillations present an ideal probe of this aspect of the foundations of quantum mechanics.

String Theory, the Dark Sector and the Hierarchy Problem

We discuss dark energy, dark matter and the hierarchy problem in the context of a general non-commutative formulation of string theory. In this framework dark energy is generated by the dynamical geometry of the dual spacetime while dark matter, on the other hand, comes from the degrees of freedom dual to the visible matter. This formulation of string theory is sensitive both to the IR and UV scales and the Higgs scale is radiatively stable by being a geometric mean of radiatively stable UV and IR scales. We also comment on various phenomenological signatures of this novel approach to dark energy, dark matter and the hierarchy problem. We find that this new view on the hierarchy problem is realized in a toy model based on a non-holomorphic deformation of the stringy cosmic string. Finally, we discuss a proposal for a new non-perturbative formulation of string theory, which sheds light on M theory and F theory, as well as on supersymmetry and holography.

Interference and Oscillation in Nambu Quantum Mechanics

Nambu Quantum Mechanics, proposed in Phys. Lett. B536, 305 (2002), is a deformation of canonical Quantum Mechanics in which only the time-evolution of the "phases" of energy eigenstates is modified. We discuss the effect this theory will have on oscillation phenomena, and place a bound on the deformation parameters utilizing the data on the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$.

How to form a wormhole

We provide a simple but very useful description of the process of wormhole formation. We place two massive objects in two parallel universes (modeled by two branes). Gravitational attraction between the objects competes with the resistance coming from the brane tension. For sufficiently strong attraction, the branes are deformed, objects touch and a wormhole is formed. Our calculations show that more massive and compact objects are more likely to fulfill the conditions for wormhole formation. This implies that we should be looking for wormholes either in the background of black holes and compact stars, or massive microscopic relics. Our formation mechanism applies equally well for a wormhole connecting two objects in the same universe.

Dynamics of genetic code evolution: The emergence of universality

We study the dynamics of genetic code evolution. The model of Vetsigian et al. [1] and Vetsigian [2] uses the mechanism of horizontal gene transfer to demonstrate convergence of the genetic code to a near universal solution. We reproduce and analyze the algorithm as a dynamical system. All the parameters used in the model are varied to assess their impact on convergence and optimality score. We show that by allowing specific parameters to vary with time, the solution exhibits attractor dynamics. Finally, we study automorphisms of the genetic code arising due to this model. We use this to examine the scaling of the solutions in order to re-examine universality and find that there is a direct link to mutation rate.

Dynamical Dark Energy and Infinite Statistics

In the $Λ$CDM model, dark energy is viewed as a constant vacuum energy density, the cosmological constant in the Einstein--Hilbert action. This assumption can be relaxed in various models that introduce a dynamical dark energy. In this letter, we argue that the mixing between infrared and ultraviolet degrees of freedom in quantum gravity lead to infinite statistics, the unique statistics consistent with Lorentz invariance in the presence of non-locality, and yield a fine structure for dark energy. Introducing IR and UV cutoffs into the quantum gravity action, we deduce the form of $Λ$ as a function of redshift and translate this to the behavior of the Hubble parameter.

Dark Matter, Dark Energy and Fundamental Acceleration

We discuss the existence of an acceleration scale in galaxies and galaxy clusters. The presence of the same acceleration scale found at very different scales and in very different astrophysical objects strongly supports the existence of a fundamental acceleration scale governing the observed gravitational physics. We also comment on the implication of such a fundamental acceleration scale on the problem of dark matter. We discuss the relevance of the fundamental acceleration for the nature of dark matter as well as for structure formation to be explored in future numerical simulations.
