On non-equilibrium physics and string theory

In this article we review the relation between string theory and non-equilibrium physics based on our previously published work. First we explain why a theory of quantum gravity and non-equilibrium statistical physics should be related in the first place. Then we present the necessary background from the recent research in non-equilibrium physics. The review discusses the relationship of string theory and aging phenomena, as well as the connection between AdS/CFT correspondence and the Jarzynski identity. We also discuss the emergent symmetries in fully developed turbulence and the corresponding non-equilibrium stationary states. Finally we outline a larger picture regarding the relationship between non-perturbative quantum gravity and non-equilibrium statistical physics. This relationship can be understood as a natural generalization of the well-known Wilsonian relation between local quantum field theory and equilibrium statistical physics of critical phenomena. According to this picture the AdS/CFT duality is just an example of a more general connection between non-perturbative quantum gravity and non-equilibrium physics. In the appendix of this review we discuss a new kind of complementarity between thermodynamics and statistical physics which should be important in the context of black hole complementarity.

Biorthogonal Quantum Mechanics: Super-Quantum Correlations and Expectation Values without Definite Probabilities

We propose mutant versions of quantum mechanics constructed on vector spaces over the finite Galois fields GF(3) and GF(9). The mutation we consider here is distinct from what we proposed in previous papers on Galois field quantum mechanics. In this new mutation, the canonical expression for expectation values is retained instead of that for probabilities. In fact, probabilities are indeterminate. Furthermore, it is shown that the mutant quantum mechanics over the finite field GF(9) exhibits super-quantum correlations (i.e. the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt bound is 4). We comment on the fundamental physical importance of these results in the context of quantum gravity.

Spin and Rotations in Galois Field Quantum Mechanics

We discuss the properties of Galois Field Quantum Mechanics constructed on a vector space over the finite Galois field GF(q). In particular, we look at 2-level systems analogous to spin, and discuss how SO(3) rotations could be embodied in such a system. We also consider two-particle `spin' correlations and show that the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality is nonetheless not violated in this model.

Galois Field Quantum Mechanics

We construct a discrete quantum mechanics using a vector space over the Galois field GF(q). We find that the correlations in our model do not violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) version of Bell's inequality, despite the fact that the predictions of this discrete quantum mechanics cannot be reproduced with any hidden variable theory.

Spacetime Emergence and General Covariance Transmutation

Spacetime emergence refers to the notion that classical spacetime "emerges" as an approximate macroscopic entity from a non-spatio-temporal structure present in a more complete theory of interacting fundamental constituents. In this article, we propose a novel mechanism involving the "soldering" of internal and external spaces for the emergence of spacetime and the twin transmutation of general covariance. In the context of string theory, this mechanism points to a critical four dimensional spacetime background.

Using Neutrinos to test the Time-Energy Uncertainty Relation in an Extreme Regime

We discuss a direct test of the relation of time and energy in the very long-lived decay of tritium (H3) (meanlife τ~ 18 yrs) with the width Γ~ 10^{-24} eV [set by the time-energy uncertainty (TEU)], using the newfound possibility of resonance reactions H3 \leftrightarrow He3 with ΔE/E ~ 5x10^{-29}. The TEU is a keystone of quantum mechanics, but probed for the first time in this extreme time-energy regime. Forestalling an apparent deviation from the TEU, we discuss the ramifications and a possible generalization of the TEU as ΔE Δt > (\hbar/2)[1+(Δt/T)^n] where Δt = τis the time of measurement (the lifetime of the state), T=L/c the time for light to cross the Universe ~ 3x10^{18} s, and n a parameter subject to future measurements. Some Mutant Forms of Quantum Mechanics

We construct a `mutant' form of quantum mechanics on a vector space over the finite Galois field GF(q). We find that the correlations in our model do not violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) version of Bell's inequality, despite the fact that the predictions of this discretized quantum mechanics cannot be reproduced with any hidden variable theory. An alternative `mutation' is also suggested.

On the 3-point functions of Aging Dynamics and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

Aging can be realized as a sub-algebra of Schrödinger algebra by discarding the time-translation generator. While the 2-point functions of the Age algebra have been known for some time, little else was known about the higher $n$-point correlators. In this letter we present novel 3-point correlators of scalar primary operators. We find that the Aging correlators are distinct from the Schrödinger correlators by more than certain dressings with time-dependent factors, as was the case with 2-point functions. In the existing literature, the holographic geometry of Aging is obtained by performing certain general coordinate transformations on the holographic dual of the Schrödinger theory. Consequently, the Aging 2-point functions derived from holography look as the Schrödinger 2-point functions dressed by time-dependent factors. However, since the 3-point functions obtained in this letter are not merely dressed Schrödinger correlators and instead depend on an additional time-translation breaking variable, we conclude that the most general holographic realization of Aging is yet to be found.

Dark Matter, Infinite Statistics and Quantum Gravity

We elaborate on our proposal regarding a connection between global physics and local galactic dynamics via quantum gravity. This proposal calls for the concept of MONDian dark matter which behaves like cold dark matter at cluster and cosmological scales but emulates modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) at the galactic scale. In the present paper, we first point out a surprising connection between the MONDian dark matter and an effective gravitational Born-Infeld theory. We then argue that these unconventional quanta of MONDian dark matter must obey infinite statistics, and the theory must be fundamentally non-local. Finally, we provide a possible top-down approach to our proposal from the Matrix theory point of view.

A Precision Test for an Extra Spatial Dimension Using Black Hole--Pulsar Binaries

We discuss the observable effects of enhanced black-hole mass loss in a black hole--neutron star (BH--NS) binary, due to the presence of a warped extra spatial dimension of curvature radius $L$ in the braneworld scenario. For some masses and orbital parameters in the expected ranges the binary components would outspiral, the opposite of the behavior due to energy loss from gravitational radiation alone. If the NS is a pulsar, observations of the rate of change of the orbital period with a precision obtained for the Binary Pulsar B1913+16 could easily detect the effect of mass loss. For $M_{BH}=7M_\odot$, $M_{NS}=1.4M_\odot$, eccentricity $e=0.1$, and $L=10μ$m, the critical orbital period dividing systems which inspiral from systems which outspiral is P$\approx$6.5 hours, which is within the range of expected orbital periods; this value drops to P$\approx$4.2 hours for $M_{BH}=5M_\odot$. Observations of a BH--pulsar system could set considerably better limits on $L$ in these braneworld models than could be determined by torsion-balance gravity experiments in the foreseeable future.

Modeling Time's Arrow

Quantum gravity, the initial low entropy state of the Universe, and the problem of time are interlocking puzzles. In this article, we address the origin of the arrow of time from a cosmological perspective motivated by a novel approach to quantum gravitation. Our proposal is based on a quantum counterpart of the equivalence principle, a general covariance of the dynamical phase space. We discuss how the nonlinear dynamics of such a system provides a natural description for cosmological evolution in the early Universe. We also underscore connections between the proposed non-perturbative quantum gravity model and fundamental questions in non-equilibrium statistical physics.

Gravitationally dressed Fermi Liquids, Quasiunparticles and High Tc Superconductivity

We clarify the new concept of gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids we have proposed to describe the normal state of high Tc superconductors. In this note we distinguish between weakly gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids which fall in the class of the canonical Fermi liquid theory (with quasiparticle excitations), and strongly gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids (with quasiunparticle excitations) which represent the high dimensional generalization of Luttinger liquids, with specific features. Such weakly or strongly gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids lead naturally to the previously proposed effective (weak or strong) gravitationally dressed Landau-Ginsburg description of either ordinary or high Tc superconductors.

On the Minimal Length Uncertainty Relation and the Foundations of String Theory

We review our work on the minimal length uncertainty relation as suggested by perturbative string theory. We discuss simple phenomenological implications of the minimal length uncertainty relation and then argue that the combination of the principles of quantum theory and general relativity allow for a dynamical energy-momentum space. We discuss the implication of this for the problem of vacuum energy and the foundations of non-perturbative string theory.

On the Steady State Distributions for Turbulence

We propose explicit forms for the steady state distributions governing fully developed turbulence in two and three spatial dimensions. We base our proposals on the crucial importance of the area and volume preserving diffeomorphisms in the space of velocities. We argue that these distributions can lead to the relevant (Kolmogorov and Kraichnan) scaling laws.

Quantum Gravity and Dark Matter

We propose a connection between global physics and local galactic dynamics via quantum gravity. The salient features of cold dark matter (CDM) and modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) are combined into a unified scheme by introducing the concept of MONDian dark matter which behaves like CDM at cluster and cosmological scales but emulates MOND at the galactic scale.

The Jarzynski Identity and the AdS/CFT Duality

We point out a remarkable analogy between the Jarzynski identity from non-equilibrium statistical physics and the AdS/CFT duality. We apply the logic that leads to the Jarzynski identity to renormalization group (RG) flows of quantum field theories and then argue for the natural connection with the AdS/CFT duality formula. This application can be in principle checked in Monte Carlo simulations of RG flows. Given the existing generalizations of the Jarzynski identity in non-equilibrium statistical physics, and the analogy between the Jarzynski identity and the AdS/CFT duality, we are led to suggest natural but novel generalizations of the AdS/CFT dictionary.

Bell's Inequalities, Superquantum Correlations, and String Theory

We offer an interpretation of super-quantum correlations in terms of a "doubly" quantum theory. We argue that string theory, viewed as a quantum theory with two deformation parameters, the string tension α' and the string coupling constant g_s, is such a super-quantum theory, one that transgresses the usual quantum violations of Bell's inequalities. We also discuss the \hbar\to\infty limit of quantum mechanics in this context. As a super-quantum theory, string theory should display distinct experimentally observable super-correlations of entangled stringy states.

Towards a spin dual of the fractional quantum Hall effect

Electromagnetic duality between the Aharonov-Bohm and the Aharonov-Casher quantum mechanical phases predicts the existence of a new collective state of matter which can be regarded as a spin dual to the fractional quantum Hall effect. The state, induced by electric fields, is driven by effective spin-spin interactions. We derive experimental and materials conditions of spin-spin interactions and electric fields under which the new state may be observed.
