Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion mass formulas for black holes with struts and strings

Mass formulas are obtained for stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion theory, which have a regular rod structure on the axis of symmetry. Asymptotic mass, angular momentum and charge are expressed as the sums of masses, angular momenta and charges of rods dressed with field contributions. The calculation is based on a three-dimensional sigma model representation of the stationary EMDA system and the Tomimatsu approach proposed for the Einstein-Maxwell system. Our results provide an alternative interpretation of mass formulas and thermodynamics for black holes with Dirac and Misner strings. It is also applicable to aligned multiple black holes with struts.

Killing tensors in foliated spacetimes and photon surfaces

We discuss a recently proposed geometric method for constructing a nontrivial Killing tensor of rank two in a foliated spacetime of codimension one that lifts trivial Killing tensors from slices to the entire manifold. The existence of nontrivial Killing tensor is closely related to generalized photon surfaces. The method is illustrated in some known cases and used to construct the hitherto unknown Killing tensor for the Nutty dyon in dilaton-axion gravity.

Killing tensors and photon surfaces in foliated spacetimes

We present a purely geometric method for constructing a rank two Killing tensor in a spacetime with a codimension one foliation that lifts the trivial Killing tensors from slices to the entire manifold. The resulting Killing tensor can be nontrivial. A deep connection is found between the existence of such a Killing tensor and the presence of generalized photon surfaces in spacetime with two Killing vector fields. This technique generates Killing tensors in a purely algebraic way, without solving differential equations. The use of our method is demonstrated for Kerr, Kerr-Newman-NUT-AdS metrics and Kerr-NUT-AdS multicharge gauged supergravity solution.

Nutty Kaluza-Klein dyons revisited

We extend the previous analysis of (locally) asymptotically flat solutions of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory by assuming that the dilaton charge is an independent parameter. This corresponds to a general nondegenerate matrix of charges within the geodesic sigma model approach and comes into contact with singular solutions of the four-dimensional Einstein-scalar theory. New features of the degenerate class of solutions, which includes regular KK black holes, are also revealed. Solving the constraint equation, we find three distinct branches of the dilaton charge as a function of the other asymptotic charges, one of which contains the previously known solutions, and the other two, related by electric/magnetic duality, are new and singular. We also investigate whether a super-extreme non-rotating solution in the presence of a Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) charge can become a wormhole, as is the case in Einstein-Maxwell theory. It is shown that the dilaton prevents this possibility, while non-traversable five-dimensional vacuum gravitational wormholes can exist. Finally, we analyze the geodesic structure within the chronosphere around the Misner string of Nutty KK dyons, showing that there are no closed timelike geodesics.

Generation of rotating solutions in Einstein-scalar gravity

We revisit the problem of the rotating generalization of the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour solution of the minimal Einstein-scalar theory proving that the two previously proposed solutions do not satisfy the equations of motion. We also derive several new spinning solutions with the scalar charge, which are endowed with oblate deformation.

Conformal and kinetic couplings as two Jordan frames of the same theory

Non-minimal scalar-tensor (ST) theories may admit an Einstein frame representation, where gravity is described by the Einstein-Hilbert action plus the scalar sector. Some STs become just {\em minimal} Einstein-scalar (MES) theories, notable examples are Brans-Dicke and $Rϕ^2$. ST theories with {\em derivative} coupling can also be reduced to an Einstein frame by disformal transformations, but, as a rule, their scalar sector will contain higher derivative terms. Here we draw attention to a new Palatini kinetically coupled theory which can be reduced to pure MES by an invertible disformal transformation. This theory can then be converted into the Jordan frame of another ST, $Rϕ^2$, which also admits an invertible transformation to MES. Two theories, each of which is dual to MES, will be {\em sequentially dual} to each other and can be considered as two different Jordan frames of the same theory. Both chosen theories violate null energy condition. Transforming the same singular MES solutions, we find the desingularization signs in both Jordan frames, but these are more pronouned in the framework of kinetic theory, leading, in the cosmological case, to Genesis-type behavior.

On the Smarr formulas for electrovac spacetimes with line singularities

Using the revised Komar-Tomimatsu approach, we derive Smarr mass formulas for stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations containing line singularities (defects) on the polar axis. In terms of the rod structure associated with Weyl representation of the metric, the horizons and the defects are formally similar up to differences due to their timelike/spacelike character. We derive (previously unknown or incorrect) horizon and global Smarr formulas in presence of a Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) parameter. To avoid the divergence of the Komar angular momentum of semi-infinite Dirac and Misner strings, it is necessary to use a symmetric tuning. We also note that the horizon mass Smarr formula does not include either magnetic charge, or NUT parameter, correcting some statements in the literature. The contribution of each Misner string to the total mass consists in an angular momentum term, an electric charge term, and a length term, which can also be presented as the product of the spacelike analogue of surface gravity and the area of the string.

Ghost-free Palatini derivative scalar-tensor theory: desingularization and the speed test

We disclose remarkable features of the scalar-tensor theory with the derivative coupling of the scalar field to the curvature in the Palatini formalism. Using the disformal transformations, we show that this theory is free from Otrogradski ghosts. For a special relation between two coupling constants, it is disformally dual to the Einstein gravity minimally coupled to the scalar, which opens the way to constructing several exact solutions. The disformal transformation degenerates at the boundary of the physical region, near which the properties of desingularization are revealed, illustrated by exact solutions: non-singular accelerating cosmology and a static spherically symmetric geon. We also construct the exact pp-waves of this theory propagating at the speed of light.

On the Smarr formula for rotating dyonic black holes

We revisit the derivation by Tomimatsu of the generalized Komar integrals giving the mass and angular momentum of rotating Einstein-Maxwell black holes. We show that, contrary to Tomimatsu's claim, the usual Smarr formula relating the horizon mass and angular momentum still holds in the presence of both electric and magnetic charges. The simplest case is that of dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes, for which we recover the modified Smarr formula relating the asymptotic mass and angular momentum, the difference between asymptotic and horizon masses being equal to the sum of the two Dirac string masses. Our results apply in particular to the case of dyonic dihole solutions which have been investigated recently.

Stationary double black hole without naked ring singularity

Recently double black hole vacuum and electrovacuum metrics attracted attention as exact solutions suitable for visualization of ultra-compact objects beyond the Kerr paradigm. However, many of the proposed systems are plagued with ring curvature singularities. Here we present a new simple solution of this type which is asymptotically Kerr, has zero electric and magnetic charges, but is endowed with magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment. It is manifestly free of ring singularities, and contains only a mild string-like singularity on the axis corresponding to a distributional energy-momentum tensor. Its main constituents are two extreme co-rotating black holes carrying equal electric andopposite magnetic and NUT charges.

Piercing of domain walls: new mechanism of gravitational radiation

Domain wall (DW) moving in media undergoes the friction force due to particle scattering. However certain particles are not scattered, but perforate the wall. As a result, the wall gets excited in the form of the branon wave, while the particle experiences an acceleration jump. This gives rise to generation of gravitational waves which we call "piercing gravitational radiation" (PGR). Though this effect is of higher order in the gravitational constant than the quadrupole radiation from the collapsing DWs, its amplitude is enhanced in the case of relativistic particles or photons because of absence of the velocity factor which is present in the quadrupole formula. We derive the spectral-angular distribution of PGR within the simplified model of the weakly gravitating particle-wall system in Minkowski space-time of arbitrary dimensions. Within this model the radiation amplitude is obtained analytically. The spectral-angular distribution of PGR in such an approach suffers from infrared and ultraviolet divergences as well as from collinear divergence in the case of a massless perforating particle. Different cut-off schemes appropriate in various dimensions are discussed. Our results are applicable both to cosmological DWs and to the braneworld models.

A tale of two dyons

We present a one-parameter family of stationary, asymptotically flat solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with only a mild singularity, which are endowed with mass, angular momentum, a dipole magnetic moment and a quadrupole electric moment. We briefly analyze the structure of this solution, which we interpret as a system of two extreme co-rotating black holes with equal masses and electric charges, and opposite magnetic and gravimagnetic charges, held apart by an electrically charged, magnetized string which also acts as a Dirac-Misner string.

NUT wormholes

We show that supercritically charged black holes with NUT provide a new setting for traversable wormholes. This does not require exotic matter, a price being the Misner string singularities. Without assuming time periodicity to make Misner strings unobservable, we show that, contrary to expectations, geodesics do not stop there. Moreover, since there is no central singularity the space-time turns out to be geodesically complete. Another unpleasant feature of spacetimes with NUTs is the presence of regions where the azimuthal angle $φ$ becomes timelike, signalling the appearance of closed timelike curves (CTCs). We show that among them there are no closed timelike or null geodesics, so the freely falling observers should not encounter causality violations. Considering worldlines of charged particles, we find that, although these can become closed in the vicinity of the wormhole throat for large enough charge-to-mass ratio, the non-causal orbits are still disconnected from the distant zones. All these findings support our feeling that wormholes with NUTs deserve to be taken seriously. Integrating the geodesic equations completely, we demonstrate the existence of timelike and null geodesics connecting two asymptotic regions of the wormhole, such that the tidal forces in the throat are reasonably small. We discuss bounds on the NUT charge which follow from the Schwinger pair creation and ionization thresholds and speculate that such NUT wormholes could be present in some galactic centers.

Rehabilitating space-times with NUTs

We revisit the Taub-NUT solution of the Einstein equations without time periodicity condition, showing that the Misner string is still fully transparent for geodesics. In this case, analytic continuation can be carried out through both horizons leading to a Hausdorff spacetime without a central singularity, and thus geodesically complete. Furthermore, we show that, in spite of the presence of a region containing closed time-like curves, there are no closed causal {\em geodesics}. Thus, some longstanding obstructions to accept the Taub-NUT solution as physically relevant are removed.

"Triangular" extremal dilatonic dyons

Explicit dyonic dilaton black holes of the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory are known only for two particular values of the dilaton coupling constant $a =1,\sqrt{3}$, while for other $a$ numerical evidence was presented earlier about existence of extremal dyons in theories with the discrete sequence of dilaton couplings $a=\sqrt{n(n+1)/2}$ with integer $n$. Apart from the lower members $n=1,\,2$, this family of theories does not have motivation from supersymmetry or higher dimensions, and so far the above quantization rule has not been derived analytically. We fill this gap showing that this rule follows from analyticity of the dilaton at the $AdS_2\times S^2$ event horizon with $n$ being the leading dilaton power in the series expansion. We also present generalization for asymptotically anti-de Sitter dyonic black holes with spherical, plane and hyperbolic topology of the horizon.

Quantized rotating Taub-bolt instantons

We argue that previously suggested metrics for rotating Taub-bolt instantons do not satisfy all the necessary regularity conditions, and we present a family of new regular rotating Taub-bolts labelled by an odd integer $k$. There are two types of rotating bolt solutions. The first infinite sequence starts with non-rotating Taub-NUT with positive mass $M_k=N$ for $a=0$ and goes to $(k-2)N$ for $|a|\to \infty$ (or $N$ for $k=1$), where $a$ is the rotation parameter. For the second sequence of rotating Page bolts, the masses $M_k$ go through the value $M_k=5N/4$ for $a=0$ and asymptote to $(k+2)N$ for $|a|\to \infty$.

Bertotti-Robinson and soliton string solutions of $D=5$ minimal supergravity

We report on a series of new solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Our method applies to space-times with two commuting Killing symmetries and consists in combining dimensional reduction on two-spaces of constant curvature with reduction on a two-torus. The first gives rise to various generalized Bertotti-Robinson solutions supported by electric and magnetic fluxes, which presumably describe the near-horizon regions of black holes and black rings (strings). The second provides generating techniques based on U-duality of the corresponding three-dimensional sigma model. We identify duality transformations relating the above solutions to asymptotically flat ones and obtain new globally regular dyonic solitons. Some new extremal asymptotically flat multi-center solutions are constructed too. We also show that geodesic solutions of three-dimensional sigma models passing through the same target space point generically split into disjoint classes which cannot be related by the isotropy subgroup of U-duality.
