Gene networks accelerate evolution by fitness landscape learning

We consider evolution of a large population, where fitness of each organism is defined by many phenotypical traits. These traits result from expression of many genes. We propose a new model of gene regulation, where gene expression is controlled by a gene network with a threshold mechanism and there is a feedback between that threshold and gene expression. We show that this regulation is very powerful: depending on parameters we can obtain any functional connection between thresholds and genes. Under general assumptions on fitness we prove that such model organisms are capable, to some extent, to recognize the fitness landscape. That fitness landscape learning sharply reduces the number of mutations necessary for adaptation and thus accelerates of evolution. Moreover, this learning increases phenotype robustness with respect to mutations. However, this acceleration leads to an additional risk since learning procedure can produce errors. Finally evolution acceleration reminds races on a rugged highway: when you speed up, you have more chances to crash. These results explain recent experimental data on anticipation of environment changes by some organisms.

Real-time dynamics of proton decay

Substituting Skyrmion for nucleon, one can potentially see -- in real time -- how the monopole is catalysing the proton (or neutron) decay, and even obtain a plausible estimate for catalysis cross-section. Here we discuss the key aspects of a practical implementation of such approach and demonstrate how one can overcome the main technical problems: Gauss constraint violation and reflections at the boundaries.

Late Reheating, Hadronic Jets and Baryogenesis

If inflaton couples very weakly to ordinary matter the reheating temperature of the universe can be lower than the electroweak scale. In this letter we show that the late reheating occurs in a highly non-uniform way, within narrow areas along the jets produced by ordinary particles originated from inflaton decays. Depending on inflaton mass and decay constant, the initial temperature inside the lumps of the overheated plasma may be large enough to trigger the unsuppressed sphaleron processes with baryon number non-conservation, allowing for efficient local electroweak baryogenesis.

Topological transitions at the resonance in gauge sector

We discuss topological transitions during parametric resonance in the gauge sector of electroweak theory. It is shown that the resonance leads to separation of topological indices of the gauge and Higgs fields, resulting in topological transitions of non-sphaleron nature.

Electroweak baryogenesis at and after preheating: What's the difference?

Two recent scenarios of preheating-related baryogenesis are compared within the framework of Abelian Higgs model in (1+1) dimensions. It is shown that they shift baryon number in opposite directions. Once both scenarios can realize simultaneously as overlapped stages of the same physical process, even the sign of net generated asymmetry becomes dependent on initial parameters.

Inflaton-induced sphaleron transitions

It has recently been proposed that the production of long wavelength Higgs and gauge configurations via parametric resonance at the end of inflation may give rise to the required baryon asymmetry at the electroweak scale. We show that the stability of the inflaton oscillations, long after the production of Higgs modes, keeps driving the sphaleron transitions, which then become strongly correlated to the inflaton oscillations. In models where the CP-violation operator is related to time variations of the Higgs field, these correlations immediately lead to an efficient generation of baryons that are not washed out after the resonance.

Non-equilibrium electroweak baryogenesis from preheating after inflation

We present a novel scenario for baryogenesis in a hybrid inflation model at the electroweak scale, in which the Standard Model Higgs field triggers the end of inflation. One of the conditions for successful baryogenesis, the departure from thermal equilibrium, is naturally achieved at the stage of preheating after inflation. The inflaton oscillations induce large occupation numbers for long-wavelength configurations of Higgs and gauge fields, which leads to a large rate of sphaleron transitions. We estimate this rate during the first stages of reheating and evaluate the amount of baryons produced due to a particular type of higher dimensional CP violating operator. The universe thermalizes through fermion interactions, at a temperature below critical, $T_{rh} < 100$ GeV, preventing the wash-out of the produced baryon asymmetry. Numerical simulations in (1+1) dimensions support our theoretical analysis.
